Page 4: tHe beSt OF - Travel Weekly...MADRiD Whether by bus, train or car, the most admired destination to visit while in Madrid is Spain’s former capital, Toledo.A World Heritage Site,

it’s no surprise that Europe’s most

popular destinations — Amsterdam,

Berlin, Dublin, London, Madrid, Paris

and Prague — offer must-see sites,

drawing crowds from far and wide.

With legendary monuments, historic

cathedrals, ancient castles and streets

as old as the cities themselves, these

destinations are undoubtedly what

Europe is known for.

But, what about the small village

around the corner, the excursions

to not-so-popularized cities and the

hidden treasures that we read about

in storybooks? it’s these incredible

gems that give Europe its charm,

its rareness and its unquestionable

sense of self.

These day trips offer vacationers a

little something extra to make their

vacation not only special, but also

extraordinarily unique.

AMSTERDAMexcursions from the largest and arguably

most important city in the Netherlands

can land travelers in several old towns

that make up an area known as the

historic triangle. the image of tulips

and windmills so many picture when

envisioning a trip here can certainly be

met during these historic day trips.

Send clients north of Amsterdam to the

old-time, fishing villages of Hoorn and

Enkhuizen. Hoorn, once the home base

for the Dutch east India Company and

a major harbor town, now hosts two

railroad stations visitors can easily

travel in on. Similarly, Enkhuizen, also

a harbor town, offers sightseers its

historic inner city, which showcases

two incredible 15th century churches,

17th century city walls and the famous

Drommedaris tower.

Other accessible and popularized

spots near Amsterdam include the

famous Dutch cheese markets set in

the picturesque cities known for their

world-class delicacies. the old towns

of Gouda and Alkmaar are only a one-

hour train ride from Amsterdam, but be

sure to send clients during the prime

time of summer to experience these

traditional markets and indulge in some

of the best cheese around.

Day trips from some of europe’s most famous cities

Vacationing in europe — everyone dreams of it, but not everyone is able to truly experience it. this ancient continent, bursting with history, tradition and undeniable beauty, has been appeasing the growing interest among travelers for centuries, fostering historic trips on the heritage of its areas and the riches that surround them.

The image of tulips and windmills so many picture when envisioning a trip here can certainly be met during these historic excursions.

Hoorn, Netherlands

BERLiNA thirty minute train ride outside of berlin will lead

travelers to Potsdam — one of Germany’s most

scenic, historic and wealthy cities. With sites, such

as the over 700-acre Park Sassouci, adorned in

gardens, pavilions and palaces, started by Frederick

the Great, and the famous red-brick gabled houses

of the Dutch Quarter, this city is a definite must-stop.

For a guided journey, have clients try Rail europe’s

Potsdam City Sightseeing tour aboard a double-

decker, open-air bus. Here, travelers will see all the

stops, including the Filmpark babelsberg, where

Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis,” among many other silent

films was made.

A second day trip, and a highly suggested one for

families, is to Krausnick's tropical Islands for a

fun-filled day at the beach. Here, travelers can take

part in perhaps the world’s largest indoor pool and

water park, boasting an artificial rainforest, hot-air

balloons, miniature golf and a campground for

overnight stays.

MADRiDWhether by bus, train or car, the most

admired destination to visit while in

Madrid is Spain’s former capital,

Toledo. A World Heritage Site, this

municipality is a place of coexistence of

Christian, Jewish and Muslim cultures

and is therefore famed for its religious

tolerance. Known for its art, sword

making, which dates back to the Roman

times, marzipan and its mountaintop

views, this unique city is one-of-a-kind.

two other excursions from Madrid

include the city Segovia, where the

famous castle of Alcázar rests, and the

historic El Escorial, which is known

for the Crypt that holds the majority of

deceased Spanish Kings. both destina-

tions are reachable by bus or train.

PARiSFor an exciting and spirit-filled day —

literally — send clients in Paris to the

capital of champagne itself, known as

Reims. the moment travelers step off

their train they’re surrounded by famed

brands of bubbly for tasting and ancient

cellars for exploring, where they’ll learn

all the secrets of the drink.

As the biggest city in the French region

of Champagne, Reims hosts a multitude

of museums, galleries and restaurants,

as well as one of the most famous

cathedrals in the world. the Cathedral

of Notre Dame de Reims is actually the

site where Kings of France would come

to be crowned. but, be careful, crowds

here can be quite overwhelming. So, for

a less visited religious stop, which is

actually a UNeSCO World Heritage

Site, visit Saint Remi basilica, which

showcases amazing Romanesque

basilica architecture.

PRAGuEAn easy day trip and perhaps the most

traversed in the Czech Republic is to

the famous Karlstejn Castle. Perched

on a hill, this once safeguard of the

crown jewels and the king’s retreat, is

about a 20- to 30-minute hike after the

one-hour, countryside train ride from

Prague. but, some argue that the views

along the walk up surrounded by

vineyards, lush greenery and shops

aplenty are alone worth the visit.

A second day trip can be reached by

bus, traveling west of Prague, to the

historic spa town of Karlovy Vary,

also known as Karlsbad. Famous

for its hot springs, which beckon

celebrities seeking its healing powers,

this breathtaking destination, full of

baroque and Art Nouveau architecture,

is the famous backdrop in hits such as

Casino Royale and the host of an annual

and renowned International

Film Festival.

DuBLiNSitting at one of the cultural hearts of

europe is Dublin. From here, popular

trips by rail to see famous churches,

museums and some of the greatest

cities in the area include belfast, the

capital of Northern Ireland, Cork,

hailed as the “real capital of Ireland,”

and Galway, the third largest city in

the Republic.

the most important of day trips, though,

includes an excursion to Blarney

Castle and County Cork. Several

touring companies, such as

Paddywagon tours, offer itineraries

for travelers, usually by bus, to get

the most out of their exciting journeys

here. Visitors will see sites such as the

final port for the titanic as well as the

famous village of blarney that hosts the

renowned blarney Castle and the

blarney Stone, which all visitors should

take the time to kiss for good luck! the

area is abounding with shops, woolen

mills, majestic gardens and even

dungeons dating back to the 12th

century. this famous day trip is one of

the most jam-packed and interactive

europe has to offer.

LONDON excursions to the west of London offer

some of the most popular trips outside

the city for a day of history debriefing

amidst spectacular sites, including

Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and

Georgian bath.

of honor is a trip worth taking even if London is

not your home base. A close by stop is Windsor,

where Windsor Castle sits as a medieval, royal

residence in the county of berkshire, spectacular for

its uncanny architecture, which occupies more than

13 acres of land. this castle is not only the largest

inhabited castle in the world, but also the longest

occupied in europe. the third stop on this journey is

the City of Bath, which is a UNeSCO World Heritage

Site. Many that visit this once spa resort, built

around the area’s hot springs, the only natural ones

in the U.K., opt for an overnight stay in one of the

city’s many bed and breakfasts.

Other famous day trips outside London include

visiting the birthplace of Winston Churchill,

Blenheim Palace, a World Heritage Site just

the 66th Consecutive Summer to Italy

Most tour operators have added Italy to

their tour lineups, but for Perillo, Italy

travel has been in its very DNA

for three generations. And while a

product manager can easily set up

hotels and sightseeing in Rome or

Venice, it’s quite another matter to

foster valuable personal relationships

with hoteliers, restaurants and tour

guides spanning 30 years or more

in experience.

After all, assembling a tour is not like

manufacturing a car. It’s about a hotel

manager telling funny “Mario stories”

at the Perillo cocktail reception, or a

second generation Perillo tour leader

spending the night at the clinic for a

guest’s twisted ankle. It’s about an

Italian businessman waving “Ciao” to

the Perillo group, because he grew up

seeing Perillo busses humming up and

down the Via Veneto.

Italy is a country based on human

relationships, not contracts. So while

longevity is no guarantee of quality,

sticking with faithful suppliers pays

huge dividends when your clients are

far from home. In Italy, a Perillo guest

is an honored guest.

Starting in 2011, Perillo tours is

paying 12 percent base commission

and five percent on air. Meeting a

modest sales goal gets agents an

additional three percent override for a

total of 15 percent commission.

Perillo has also gone back to its roots

from the 50s and 60s by reviving their

Italy FIt department. Custom groups

and individuals are quoted within

48 hours.

Also new in 2011, is the Alpine

Wonders tour to Austria, Italy and

Monaco. From the major cities to the

charming hill towns off the beaten

path, Perillo’s itineraries have been

honed and crafted for your ultimate

enjoyment. You’ll appreciate the

balance of sightseeing, free time,

optional activities and relaxation.

iT’S ALL iNCLuDEDto add to this true experience,

journeys include unmatched meal

service with daily breakfast buffet

— not the standard continental fare

you’ll find with lesser tours. Daily

dinners include pasta, your choice of

two entrees, vegetable, salad, dessert

and coffee. Additionally, “dinner out”

nights feature a delightful antipasto.

Fine local wines, representative of

each region, are also included with

dinners, or, if you prefer, your choice

of beer, mineral water or soda.

Perillo Tours has established strong relationships with some of the best hotels in italy. in each of the journeys, you’ll find only first-class or deluxe hotels.

It’s no wonder that MUC has been

awarded the “best” as well as the

“smoothest” international hub in europe

and is frequently ranked in the top five

airports of the world.

MUC not only offers its passengers

substantial time savings with an

atmosphere with its quiet, state-of-the-

art terminals and high-tech innovations.

A cutting edge information system is

presently in test phase and is being

developed to help optimize the air

traveler’s time at MUC. the so-called

calculate the remaining time available

until departure. Additionally, some of

these kiosks will allow passengers

to have real-time, personal contact

with airport personnel for information

and assistance via face-to-face video

conferencing.

Getting to Munich has never been

easier with over 100 weekly departures

from North America. Once you arrive in

Munich, you can easily connect to all 27

every bit as important as the destinations

Uniworld’s guests visit are the ships

that take them there. While each

Uniworld boutique cruise ship has its

own unique personality, they are all

designed with the same signature

touches — stylish elegance, beautiful

décor, classic furnishings, inspiring art

and modern conveniences — all of

which create the most inviting

atmosphere for those who want to

experience the best sights in world-

class comfort and luxury.

S.S. ANTOINeTTe, UNIWORLD’S

CROWN JeWeL

Uniworld will continue bringing one-

of-a-kind ships to the rivers in 2011.

Certain to be Uniworld’s crown jewel is

the new ultra-luxurious and innovative

S.S. Antoinette, sailing on its popular

Castles along the Rhine itinerary.

Walking onto the S.S. Antoinette, you’ll

immediately understand why the “S.S.”

precedes “Antoinette,” as this appropri-

ately means “Super Ship.” In the spirit

of old world elegance and comfort, the

S.S. Antoinette has been designed to

reflect France’s Château de Versailles

during the late 18th century, with such

thoughtful elements as a massive

baccarat chandelier with blue sapphires

that was originally custom-crafted by

Strauss for New York’s historic tavern

on the Green.

the S.S. Antoinette will also have

the largest staterooms out of any

contemporary river cruise ship

operating in europe, along with many

first-of-a-kind features not found on

any other river cruise ship, such as top

deck suites and staterooms with

open-air private balconies, which can

convert to enclosed conservatories with

the touch of a switch. there will also be

a 20-seat movie theater and a heated,

mosaic-tiled swimming pool with

underwater music.

Uniworld’s second new ship, the Douro

Spirit, will feature French balconies in

all staterooms, so guests can get closer

to the breathtaking scenery of Portugal

and Spain’s UNeSCO World Heritage

Douro River Valley. And, Uniworld will

re-enter the Russian market, with the

launch of the River Victoria, projected to

be the most beautiful and comfortable

ship to sail on Russia’s Volga River,

from Moscow to St. Petersburg on

Uniworld’s new Imperial Waterways

of Russia itinerary.

BOuTiquE RiVER CRuiSESWith Uniworld, your clients will sail the historic waterways of the world’s great destinations in comfort and style with the world’s only authentic boutique cruise line. Uniworld offers luxuriously appointed boutique cruise ships with an average capacity of 130 guests. River-view suites and state-rooms — many with French balconies and hand crafted marble bathrooms — offer guests a comfortable retreat. Guests will indulge in world-class, gourmet cuisine, and be pampered by an award-winning, english-speaking staff. And each day, guests will be captivated by their included shore excursions hosted by their english-speaking local guides.

Uniworld offers over 500 departures on 39 itineraries sailing on 12 rivers in 20 countries throughout europe, Russia, egypt, and China.
