2017 Trade Information

Authentic, Unexpected, Unique, Unspoiled…. Very Different

If you’re a Travel Agent, a Tour or Coach Operator, a Group Organiser - if you organise MICE events or weddings or parties or school groups or you’re a cruise company looking for port excursions – you’ll always be looking for something different, unique and sensational for your clients – something that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. You’ll be looking for experiences that satisfy your clients so much that they’ll come home with great big smiles on their faces AND wanting to go again.

Tourism - Today & Tomorrow

Experiential travel, green travel, adventure travel, activity holidays are all very much in the ascendant. Every single tourism survey in the last decade points to it. The fact is that travelers want more for their buck and for their time than hollow experiences. They want great memories of happy, safe destinations, new experiences where they

can get authentic wholehearted welcomes from local people. They want to come home feeling better after having had the real experience of a lifetime – without having spent their lifetime’s savings on it! That’s green tourism – economically, culturally, socially and environmentally sustainable. Great experiences again and again. Moreover it is what the market is demanding.

Why Romagna is the perfect destination

When the Romans built the via Emilia from Rimini to Bologna a couple of thousand years ago, they created the perfect destination. On the one side of their highway were pretty hills and soaring mountains – on the other side an amazingly fertile plain leading to the Adriatic Sea. And now, the hills are coated with superb vineyards, the plain packed full of wonderful crops and the sea brings in a harvest of superb seafood.

So, Romagna is the perfect local food

and wine destination.

And it’s such a fertile place, and grows so many luscious things, that they all need to be celebrated – from the cherry, apricot, peach festivals in the springtime to the massive autumn harvests of grapes and their wine festivals. Plus a bunch of others – from kite festivals to theatre festivals to buskers’ festivals – and, of course the millennia-old saints’ day festivals - there’s never a weekend goes by without a festival within easy reach.

So, Romagna is the perfect

festival destination.

And, over the years, rich, powerful cities have been built along the via Emilia, which have now become great cities of art. By the Adriatic Sea another chain of cities grew, including one that was to be a great European centre of culture and international trade, the capital of the Western Roman Empire and the harbour for the Eastern Roman fleet. – Venice before Venice existed – byzantine Ravenna.

So, Romagna is the perfect

culture, history and world

Although Romagna is just over the border from Tuscany, it is relatively undiscovered and unspoiled – there are no hordes of tourists here, the hills and the plains are virgin territory where hospitality and kindness are the rule rather than the exception. The vast majority of hotels are family-owned and run and have a high commitment to green, local initiatives.

Every room has been decorated simply and stylishly with care and thought. The hotel has a Green Tourism Silver award. The kitchen, under the management of award-winning chef Andrea (Giorgia’s husband) is quite sensational. It’s worth a visit or two in itself.

Best of Romagna restaurants

EAT FRESH LOCAL! Just a small selection of our fully inspected (and tested) restaurants:

Ristorante Dei Cantoni is a superb Michelin-listed restaurant just by the castle in Longiano. It is run by Teresa and Danilo and their family, who produce superb food from great local ingredients on a daily basis. Prices are most reasonable and fresh pasta is made every morning. The list of desserts is truly astonishing.

Agriturismo La Casina in Savio di Ravenna specializes in local rare-breed meat 365 days of the year. It is always packed out with local people – a real accolade to the superb cooking and extraordinarily fresh ingredients – not forgetting the affordable prices.

Ristorante La Sangiovesa in Santarcangelo is a must-visit restaurant for the undiluted, top-notch Romagnolo experience. It serves traditional dishes, fresh made pasta, fresh-made piadina and superb desserts, its plates of charcuterie are wonderful and always contain a true selection of local foods – mainly sourced from the restaurant’s own farm.

Osteria di Montecodruzzo is set right at the top of the hill with views that stretch hundreds of kilometers both to the sea on one side and Tuscany on the other! e restaurant was set up by Massimo Monti to make the most of his family’s local farm. Delicious meat from Massimo’s cattle, delicious breads and amazingly fresh vegetables (plus of course home-made pasta) complement the sublime view.

Ristorante and Osteria Casa Artusi are both within the Pellegrino Artusi Foundation. Artusi was, of course, the ‘Father of Italian Cookery’ and naturally both kitchens follow his typical traditional recipes relying on fresh local ingredients. As both are training restaurants, prices are extremely low for a quality of food and service that is exceptionally high – even by top international standards.

Best of Romagna tasting experiences

TASTE SENSATIONS! Just a few of our fully inspected vineyards and olive groves

Villa Venti is set on a stunning hillside close to Longiano. The owner, Mauro Giardini has spent a long career in wine, starting as a sommelier at one of Ravenna’s top restaurants. Mauro’s passion for extraordinary good wine has led him to create a zero carbon, organic – soon to be biodynamic - vineyard which truly reflects the superb nature of the terrain in which it is set. A tasting here is a really memorable experience, the wine, the view, the passion of the owners – all combine to deliver an emotional event.

Fattoria Paradiso was the prime mover in quality wines in the ancient wine-hilltown of Bertinoro. Set in a stunning 17th century aristocrat’s manor, the founder of the vineyard, Mario Pezzi has done more than anyone to create and promote fabulous Romagna wines. There is a fascinating cellar museum with thousands of bottles and tasting the latest Sangiovese DOC and Albano DOCG amongst other top quality wines is a sublime experience. Both the Pope and Ronald Reagan have tasted these wines so you’ll be in good company.

Antico Frantoio Turchi has been going as a family enterprise for around 500 years. Michele (the current Turchi in charge) can trace his ancestors back 17 generations to when the first Turchi (a Turkish merchant) arrived and set up the olive grove. There is no less love expended on the trees or the olives now than there was then – and it shows – the oil (and the wine grown on the estate) is truly delectable.

Brisighella tops a big hill of gypsum – it’s a simple as that. The gypsum creates a microclimate that is absolutely perfect for growing olives – warmish in the winter and coolish in the summer. Brisighello Olive Oil was one of the first Italian products to get the internationally-respected DOP label and that’s just the mid-range oil that you’ll taste here – the top olive from the autochthonous variety Ghiacciola produces tiny amounts of ‘Nobil Drupa Oil os stunning quality.

Celli Wines is a smart vineyard in Bertinoro, run by two local familes Sirri and Casadei who have an international reputation in the wine industry, and a delightful array of superb wines to taste in their tasting room with an enormous panoramic view. The tasting experience could be no better!

Best of Romagna Festivals

FAB FESTAS! Festivals worth a visit in themselves:

The Festival of Cuckolds has been taking place in Santarcangelo di Romagna in November for over 1,000 years – OK its proper name is the Festa of San Martino, but the enormous horns on the ceremonial arch in the main square give the game away. The population at least doubles at the time of this enormous ancient fair. The historic city is truly crammed with drinking, eating, selling, music-making, dancing people, stalls, marquees. It’s wall-to-wall colour and music.

Artisti in Piazza in May is a great name for an enormous festival of street performance. Here you’ll see artists, performers and audience members from all over the world in this beautiful hilltop historic city. And Pennabilli is fun at any time of the year – quirky museums, a quirky population and great food and wine. Artisti in Piazza, though is a seminal experience for many – simply wall-to-wall astonishment and fun!

FestArtusiana is, in our opinion the best food and wine festival in Europe – possibly in the world. In June, for 10 straight days, the birthplace of Pellegrino Artusi, the “Father of Italian Cookery”, hosts the mother and father of all cookery festivals – it simply takes over the town. Streets are renamed – street of Fruit and Veg, street of Gelato etc. Bands play, musicians perform, open-air restaurants open, and simply everywhere there is great food and wine. It’s like an enormous, good tempered dinner party.

The International Kite Festival takes over the beaches of Pinarella and Cervia in April every year. You can hardly see the sky for the thousands of kites in all shapes and sizes, colours and materials. And everybody joins in. Every spring the festival attracts the most spectacular wind artists from 5 continents – Cervia becomes “Kite capital” for a week of colour and creativity in respect of nature.

Christmas is the big one! Everywhere in Romagna has a special relationship with Christmas and Nativity Scenes and Christmas markets pop up everywhere. Top venues are Cesenatico where Leonardo da Vinci’s port every ship is bedecked with lights and Christmas inages – Sant Agata Feltria the hilltop town with a fairytale castle that becomes 100% Christmas City and San Marino a whole hilltop state that becomes Father Christmas Land (or as they call it Christmas of Wonders). It’s simply unbelievable – a Christmas dream come true.

Best of Romagna Places

MUST SEE SIGHTS! Best of Romagna Places you must see:

Ravenna is the little-known world heritage of Italy. This amazing Byzantine city was Venice before Venice existed and the capital of the Roman Empire after Rome fell. There are glorious basilicas everywhere, paying homage to a past that was no less than glorious. The light-filled mosaics, as bright as they were 1500 years ago are a once-in-a-lifetime dream sight.

San Marino is possibly the oldest republic in the world. And possibly the smallest. This mountaintop world heritage site is a fascinating visit not just for its duty-free shopping and its stunning views but also for its history and culture and the tenacity of its people in their commitment to freedom and justice.

Brisighella is well known globally for its sensational olive oils, wines and honey grown as a result of its gypsum environment. It is also a fascinating medieval hilltop town with a soaring Venetian fortress, fascinating ancient elevated alleyways and lovely squares.

Bertinoro (“drunk in gold” is its English translation from the time when the Empress Galla Placidia tried its wine) has a real commitment to hospitality – its hospitality pillar attests to the historic issue the city has been proud of for hundreds of years. Add to this the wine and the food for which this town is so famous – and the new and unique interreligious museum in the towering castle and a wonderful festival each year and you have a fascinating place to visit.

Rimini is arguably where it all started. First known by the Romans as Ariminum and their first major bridgehead in northern Italy – Rimini has taken part in pretty much every chapter in Romagnolo history. Its story continued as the powerful and wealthy capital of the pre-Renaissance ruling Malatestas and even to the European beginnings of the glitzy ‘Dolce Vita’ and mass tourism. There is something for everyone here!

Faenza better known as Faience where the ultimate in porcelain was created in medieval times for the courts of Europe. Even now there are dozens of small artisan potteries making delicious items, plus of course the sensational museum of porcelain and a city that prospered to much from this trade that its squares and streets were gloriously created.

EVEN MORE CLOSE BY! Best of Romagna Places you can see in a day

Venice – ‘La Serenissima’ is just a hop, skip and a jump away. In Roman times it was the next stop up the via Polipia, now it is a short journey by motorway. – an easy day trip.

Florence – in the 19th century a new train line was built from the ceramic city of Faenza. It’s not far, and follows the river Lamone through the lovely Romagna hills and the Apeninnes for the 100 or so kilometers of delightful countryside.

Bologna – ‘The Fat’ so named for the wealth of food and wine in this historic city – is just up the via Emilia and well worth a visit. It has one of the oldest universities in the world and one of the oldest food and wine markets amongst much more else.

Parma – Parma ham, Parmesan are just two of this city’s well known food products and it’s a beautiful serene city too. Another visit just along the via Emilia – it’s astonishing how well those Romans created the tourist map!

SECRETS! Best of Romagna hidden secrets:

Longiano is a tiny hilltop castle-town with no less than five fascinating museums and churches everywhere. Unknown outside of Italy it is a delightful visit not only for its great food and wine, architecture and museums but also for its glorious situation in lovely surroundings.

Santarcangelo di Romagna could be called the heart of Romagna, a vibrant historic city (naturally with a fabulous castle) it is home to two of Romagna’s very best typical restaurants. It makes for a delightful half day visit (with lunch or dinner, of course!

Sant'Agata Feltria really has a fairtale castle! The soaring ancient edifice has now been converted into a real warm home for the fairtales of Europe and it’s well worth a visit. Plus Sant Agata Feltria has an enormous truffle fair every weekend in October.

Cervia has an enormous artisan salt industry because of its position in the lagoon. Naturally the Papal State took advantage of this in the middle ages and created a whole new 17th century city designed for ‘White Gold’ or salt! A couple of hundred years later Cervia spawned another new town – a Garden City by the Sea – stylish, glitzy Milano Marittima.

Cesena and Forlì are twin capitals of the region. Cesena is a tranquil, serene Italian town with a castle and a superb square – Forlì had a lot of history and lovely architecture before Mussolini was born near the town. Il Duce created a showstopper of dark brutalist architecture that remains to this day.

YOU MAY ASK!

A: It’s the historical Eastern part of Emilia Romagna - South of Ferrara, North of Cattolica, East of Bologna, West of the Adriatic Sea. Or to put it more lyrically: the Warm Heart of Italy between Venice and Florence, the Apennines and the Adriatic!

Ever heard of Pellegrino Artusi?

If not you have some wonderful eating, drinking and living to do in the warm company of the father of Italian home cooking. Start with our two recipes…

In 1891, At the tender age of 70 Pellegrino Artusi, a rich travelling Florence-based merchant got his final refusal from yet another publisher.

This delightful, energetic gentleman's life-work was to travel the length and breadth of Italy prior to unification and collect authentic local home recipes from all over soon-to-be Italy. And, of course, each recipe had both a story and a taste!

Anyway, Artusi, not to be deterred, went ahead self-published his first volume of 475 recipes called "Science in the Kitchen and the Art of Eating Well" And, of course it quickly sold out. 122 years later it is still one of Italy's best selling books and has never been out of print.

Artusi travelled throughout the Italian peninsula. He became familiar with many of the regions and their culinary traditions, and he began collecting recipes that later became the foundation of his book. Family wealth enabled him to retire at the age of 45 and he devoted himself to his passions, culture and cuisine.

Born in Romagna in the town of Forlimpopoli, this successful fabric merchant and bon viveur had moved to Florence as a young man. Luckily for us, because when Italy was unified in 1861 only 2.5% of the country's population could speak Italian. So the book, written in Italian was a unifying force in itself - spreading opportunities and understanding together with the recipes.

And it's no wonder that the book has been so successful, Artusi himself was leery of books about cooking. In his preface he says, "Beware of books that deal with this art: most of them are inaccurate or incomprehensible, especially the Italian ones. The French are a little better. But from either, the very most you will glean are a few notions, useful only if you already know the art."

He considered his book a teaching manual, "I practice using this manual, one simply needs to know how to hold a wooden spoon," he wrote. "The best teacher is experience. Yet even lacking this, with a guide such as mine, and devotion to your labours, you should be able, I hope, to put something decent together.”

But, most importantly, and typically, - in his 14th edition he says this he says this "Finally, I should not like my interest in gastronomy to give me the reputation of a gourmand or glutton. I object to any such dishonourable imputation, for I am neither. I love the good and the beautiful wherever I find them, and hate to see anyone squander, as they say, God's bounty. Amen"

He saw 15 editions published before his death in 1911 at the age of 90. Originally containing 475 recipes, the last edition of Artusi, as the book is simply called, contained 790 recipes.

Casa Artusi, established in 2007, is a tribute to the man who single handedly put Italian home cooking on the culinary map. Housed in a renovated and church in his birthplace of Forlimpopoli, Casa Artusi has a restaurant, l'Osteria, wine store, culinary school, library, meeting space, art exhibits and museum. It is a place to read, learn, practice, taste and appreciate the treasure that is "Italian home cooking.”The Restaurant and l'Osteria serve traditional, regional dishes and prepare some of Artusi's recipes, depending the season - all at incredibly low prices. The wine cellar is associated with the Enoteca Regionale Emilia-Romagna and has over 200 different kinds of wine from the region.

The library contains around 45,000 books including Artusi's personal library, bequeathed to the city, the Italian Gastronomy Collection (books, magazines, films, etc. about food culture, especially home cooking), and the Forlimpopoli Council library. The Cooking School offers a variety of day classes with some of the area's best chefs. Also demonstrating regional and traditional Romagnolo home cooking is the Associazione della Mariette, named after a woman whom Artusi said, ". . .is both a good cook, and a decent, honest person. . .”.

Since 1997, Forlimpopoli has held an annual gastronomic event dedicated to Artusi, The Festa Artusiana. For over a week every night between 7pm and midnight, Casa Artusi and the historical center of the town come alive as a "city of taste." Streets, alleys, courtyards and squares become stages for food stands featuring Artusi's dishes, exhibitions, performances, multi-media productions, tastings and gastronomic tours, concerts, children's events, cultural events, art displays, and more.
