Leytonstone Festival 2018

Welcome toLeytonstoneFestival2018

This year’s Festival includes a wide range of events; something for everyone to enjoy. It is our aim to provide a platform for creativity, encouraging local individuals, groups and venues to put on events for your enjoyment.

We are a non-profit charity run by volunteers. The Festival is totally dependent on public funding. This year’s Festival is possible due to ward funding from Cann Hall, Forest, Cathall and Leytonstone Ward Forums and Awards For All lottery funding. We are most grateful for this funding enabling the Leytonstone Festival to happen.

For the second year running we owe a huge ‘thank you’ to The Stow Brothers (Estate Agents) who have provided leaflets, programmes and other promotional material. Thanks also to the core of Trustees and the friends of Leytonstone Festival who have been busy applying for grants, communicating with people and creating spreadsheets with patience and kindness. They have given their time freely and are instrumental in making it all happen.

If you would like to say hello or ask any questions about the Festival, I’ll be at the Festival Opening Event at St John’s Church on Saturday 7 July. I look forward to meeting you.

Talk & Discussion with Derek Marks and Dr Stephanie Duckett. Hitchcock’s films and persona continue to have a profound impact on consumer society, our psyche and the arts. Psychologist Dr. Stephane Duckett works with The Royal Free Hospital (Author of Hitchcock in Context 2014). Derek Marks is a painter, born in Stratford. His ‘Legacies’ manuscript combines a personal history of his artistic development with an appreciation and investigation into mainly 19/20 & 21st century artists, architects & society.

In conjunction with London Pride we show our pride in our individuality & invite children age 3-16 to Ask a Drag Queen anything…. Topsie Redfern is ready to take questions of all sorts. They’ll be Disneyesque songs and maybe a story. We have space for just 15 children so please do RVSP via email:[email protected]

Cabaret royalty Topsie Redfern brings her mix of fun and games to the audience. Beautifully singing theatre classics and a good dose of princess. The Northcote E11 is one of the most intimate venues that you can view cabaret so expect to be part of the show. Drag Out The Weekend is our most friendly event.

A Talk by Mark Carroll of the Waltham Forest Family History Society. As a result of the New Poor Law of the 1830s workhouses were built up and down the country. But what was life really like for those admitted to the workhouse? Mark Carroll will try to answer this question by providing information gleaned from his research into some of these institutions in London, Essex and Suffolk.

From Fayetteville, Arkansas, Dylan Earl & The Reasons Why play old time/new time straight down the line good times country rock’n’roll. Expect foot stompin’ and tears in your beers! www.dylanearl.bandcamp.com

An evening dedicated to Gin. Come along for a tasting session of a variety of gins and gin cocktails. Learn about pairing with mixers and garnishes. Light food refreshments provided. Live acoustic music.

A mixed cabaret/burlesque style event, taking a quirky and often satirical look at news media and news in general. As with all burlesque and most contemporary cabaret, it’s intended for an adult audience. Shows usually feature robust language, partial nudity and a raucous, yet very friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Burlesque and cabaret are essentially intimate performances with no theatrical style ‘fourth wall’. The audience, and especially audience interaction, are very much part of the show.

From Los Angeles sweat and style are the high geared twin axles of Speedbuggy USA. They’re one of the hardest playing bands in country music, putting their nitro-fueled brand on a genre that’s been the soundtrack to American life for nearly 100 years. They arrived at their unique sound through the prism of experience, history and a love for some of the greatest music from country’s past. Their inspiration comes from the hard twanging Bakersfield sound of Buck Owensand his Buckeroos, followed by Merle Haggard. www.speedbuggyusa.com
