MUSIC MINSTRY 3 ANNOUNCING ALL MUSICAL GROUPS FOR 2013-14All musical groups will be reconvening for a new academic year, starting on Tuesday September 2. Here is a list of every group. All parishioners are invited to be members of one or more musical ensembles!CHOIRS - ADULTSt. Cecilia; adult choir which sings for the 9 a.m. service most Sundays. This is the perfect ensemble for those that like an earlier service, those that enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, and those who like to make a joyful noise. Music is selected from all styles and periods and is kept relatively simple. Occasionally the St. Cecilia and Advent Schola choirs will sing together. No previous experience singing in a choir is needed to join the St. Cecilia’s! Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights, starting September 2 between 6:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.Advent Schola; adult choir which sings for the 11:15 a.m. service every Sunday. The Advent Schola sings a large body of music from the classical Anglican music tradition with a large emphasis placed on music of Western European composers. The music is somewhat challenging; therefore experience singing in a choir is desirable. Rehearsals are on Wednesday nights, starting September 3 between 6:30 and 7:45 p.m.Occasional Choir; adult choir which sings only on the fourth Sunday of the month. This is the easiest way to join the music program. Simply come to the choir room in Pendleton Hall at 8:15 on the fourth Sunday of each month to learn the anthem for the 9 a.m. service that very same day! There isn’t even a weekly rehearsal. With little rehearsal time, the music is kept simple enough to be learned in the space of one morning.New! Evensong Choir - the latest group at the Church of the Advent, open to all adult and some teen singers in the Spartanburg community. The choir sings for evensongs on September 28, March 15, and May 14 and rehearses 2 hours before each evensong. Music will be given out to interested singers in advance. Strong music reading skills are necessary to be in the Evensong Choir. Please contact Brennan for more details. CHOIRS – CHILDRENCherub Choir; choir for four-year olds which sings four times a year. This is the Advent’s youngest choir, and teaches children the joy of singing through fun games, bible stories and other musical activities. Meetings will either be on Tuesdays between 4 and 4:30 p.m., or on Thursdays between 12:30 and 1 p.m., depending on children’s and parents’ schedules.Angel Choir; for grades K to 1 which sings on the first Sunday of every month. The Angel Choir sings in church more regularly, and even gets to learn simple music reading skills. There are lots of fun musical games to play. Dr. Kelly Vaneman is its director. Meetings are in Room 106 of the Parish Life Center every Wednesday between 5:15 and 6 p.m., starting September 10.Junior Choir; for grades 2-5 which sings on the first and third Sundays of every month. The Junior Choir develops a child’s music reading and singing skills and prepares children to be musical leaders in worship. The curriculum is set by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), an organization which promotes high standards of church music all over the world. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays between 5:15 and 6 p.m., starting September 10.Youth Choir; for grades 6-12 which sings on the third Sunday of every month. This is a great way for tweens and teens to keep on singing after “graduating” from the Junior Choir. The music draws from many styles and periods. This is also when choristers start doing a lot more singing in parts. Rehearsals are on Sundays between 5:00 and 5:45 p.m., starting September 7.INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES – YOUTH AND/OR ADULTGabriel’s Instruments; an instrumental ensemble which plays in church once a month. Anyone in the church who has played a string, wind, or brass instrument at least one year is invited to join. The music will be flexible, tailored to whichever instruments are present and whatever anyone’s ability is. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays between 5 and 5:45 p.m., starting September 2.Advent Toners; a hand chime ensemble which plays in church once a month. This is a great way to contribute to the musical life of the church without even having to sing. The hand chimes are tons of fun, and help to develop great rhythm skills. When they are heard from the church gallery, it’s almost like hearing a giant music box. Rehearsals are on Thursdays between 6 and 6:45 p.m., starting September 4.Carilloneurs’ Guild; a group of fine individuals which ring the bells in the Cleveland Memorial Bell Tower after Sunday services and following weddings and funerals. This group is open to anyone ages 18 and over. To join, please call Brennan Szafron for more information. Anyone who wishes to be a carilloneur must be able to climb steps.ALL MUSICAL ENSEMBLES MEET IN THE CHOIR ROOM UPSTAIRS IN PENDLETON HALL, UNLESS OTHERWISE INDI-CATED. To join any one of them, or for more information, please contact Dr. Brennan Szafron, organist/choirmaster at 504-3694 or e-mail [email protected].

A Pastoral Encounter: God is a Surprise!

Over the past two Sundays I have spoken from the pulpit about the surprising nature of God— how he sometimes shows up and does things we would least expect! It’s one thing to preach such a claim, but quite another to live it, to experience it first hand in daily life.

Which brings me to a recent conversation I had with one of the members of the Guild of St. Francis and St. Clare, who was visiting a local assisted-living facility to deliver flowers following Sunday services at the Advent. Delivering flowers to the homebound is just one of the many in-reach activi-ties of the guild. It’s a wonderful, simple gesture that brings a bit of cheer to many parishioners who cannot make it to church on a regular basis.

After making all the deliveries that day at the facility, the visitor discovered that she had an extra flower arrangement in her car, and checking with the receptionist she learned that a certain woman at the facility, who was not an Ad-vent member, had rarely received a visit from her church or from friends. So moved was she by this account that she took it upon herself to deliver the extra arrangement to the woman. And the result of this encounter was touching to say the least. The woman literally wept with joy, expressing over and over again her gratitude over such a thoughtful gesture being made on her behalf.

About a week later, during a regular meeting of the guild of St. Francis and St. Clare, this story was shared with all committee members, and it didn’t take long for the group to institute a change to its flower-delivery protocol: From now on, with every flower delivery to the assisted living communities in the area, the guild will make sure that one flower is reserved for someone outside the Advent family. Suddenly, an in-reach ministry is transformed into an outreach to others in need.

Being surprised by joy: This is a sure sign, I think, of the Divine hand in all things.

In peace,

Father Steve +

The duties are not strenuous or difficult; we are looking for willing hearts to assist with light administrative tasks and basic equipment management. To learn more about Spartanburg Shares, visit the organization’s website at www.spartanburgshares.org or call Jo-Ellen DeLuca, Shares’ lead volunteer coordinator at 864-504-3699. The Advent representatives to the Spartanburg Shares board—Alan Duesterhaus Lynne Blackman, and Craig Williams—would also be happy to provide you with more details.
