A day that captured the fears and cr ies o f a nat ion; a day that s t ruck both terror and ven-geance in the hear ts o f a people that had not been fe l t s ince the un-forget tab le events o f December 7 , 1941 (Pear l Harbor) . This year wi l l mark the 10 year memoria l o f 9-11 , Patr io ts ’ Day .

At 8 :46 am Amer ican Air -l ines F l ight 11 c rashed into the North s ide , Tower 1 o f the Wor ld Trade Center . L ive news coverage made nat iona l headl ines o f what was or ig ina l ly thought an acc ident . By 9 :05 am Uni ted Air l ines F l ight 175 h i t South Tower 2 . At th is po int the nat ion looked on in fear , suspense and d isbe l ie f to what we learned was a terror i s t h i jack-ing . 9 :37 am found our country a t a s tandst i l l as Amer ican Air l ines F l ight 77 crashed into The Penta-gon fo l lowed by the hero ic e f for t made by the passengers o f Uni ted Air l ines F l ight 93 , which a t 10:03 am gave the i r l i ves , over tak ing the h i jackers o f the fourth a i rp lane and d iver t ing i t f rom i t s in tended Washington, D.C target . A l l 44 hu-man passengers and crew, a long wi th the h i jackers , were k i l l ed as th is p lane crashed in a f i e ld in S toney Township o f Pennsy lva-nia . Short ly thereaf ter , our nat ion would s tand s i lent , breath less and immobi l i zed as we wi tnessed a t 9 :59 am, the co l lapse o f Tower 2 and then Tower 1 a t 10:28 am. Even the most powerfu l were humanized that day .

Casua l t ies h i t numbers we l l above 2 , 970 ,not inc luding the over 400 emergency workers that gave the i r l i f e as we l l . The New York F i re Department (FDNY) , the New York Pol ice Department (NYPD) , EMT’s and pr ivate EMS (Emergency Serv ice Uni ts ) a l l gave the i r l i ves that day .

In honor o f the approach-ing 10 year Memoria l on August 24 , 2011 , f i re f ighters f rom var ious s ta

t ions s ta tewide c l imbed the s ta i rs o f the West in Peachtree P laza to symbol ize the 110 f l ights o f the fa l len Towers . They were fu l ly dressed in the i r gear and each par-t i c ipant carr ied the name, badge and photograph o f f i remen who gave the i r l i f e that day , as bagpip-ers p layed in honor . On August 26 , The Freedom Ride cyc l i s t , a ground made o f Georg ia F i re f ighters and vo lunteers began a 1035 mi le jour-ney f rom At lanta to Ground Zero in New York Ci ty . These events are jus t the f i r s t o f many that wi l l

commemorate the memory that day and i t s fa l len heroes . Ground Zero i s soon to be home to the Freedom Tower , known now as One Wor ld Trade Center , which wi l l s tand ta l ler than the Trade Towers b ig s i s ter The Empire Sta te Bui ld ing . This bui ld ing wi l l take back the sky that once housed an a l l too fami l -iar and famous sky l ine and pay homage to those who not only la id i t s bo l t s but a l so to those los t the i r l i ves de fending and protec t ing . One Wor ld Trade Center i s expected to be completed in 2013 .

Have you ever des i red to hear the vo ice o f God in your l i f e? Have you wondered i f God ’s vo ice i s s t i l l heard in the ear th? In the midst o f the tur-moi l present in the wor ld one would th ink that God ’s vo ice has been s i lenced . The t ruth i s , He s t i l l speaks . Many be l ievers , inc luding myse l f s t rugg led wi th hear ing the vo ice o f God. For years I ’ ve quest ioned how does one recognize that “s t i l l smal l vo ice?”

My des i re to hear the vo ice o f God led me to the s tudying o f His word . In my s tudy , I exam-ined John 10:27 which s ta tes , “My sheep hear My vo ice , and I know them, and they fo l low Me” (NKJV) . This scr ipture prov ided me the keys in learning to hear and recognize the vo ice o f God.

The f i r s t key i s Knowing that I am his sheep . The scr ip-ture says “My sheep” which s ig-n i fy a sense o f be longing and ownership . Be ing par t o f the sheepfo ld o f God was my in i t ia l s tage in learning to hear f rom Him.

The second key i s Fa i th to hear as a resu l t o f be ing par t o f the sheepfo ld o f God. Webster ’ s d ic t ionary de f ines fa i th as “a s t rong sys tem of be l ie f s” . I had to have an unwaver ing be l ie f that God wi l l speak to me. Fa i th i s the key that wi l l ac t ivate the vo ice o f God for any be l iever de-s i r ing to hear Him.

The th i rd key i s Int i -macy wi th God. Jesus dec lares “ I know them”. The word know in th is context i s an int imate word . To cu l t ivate an int imate re la t ionship wi th God requires spending t ime wi th Him. Just as one would share pr ivate in for-mat ion wi th persons whom he/she i s c loses t to , I ’ ve l earned that the more t ime I spend com-muning wi th God the more I wi l l hear Him speak .

I ’ ve not iced an interes t -ing t rend. Table ts are ben-e f i c ia l for many people as a supplementa l dev ice ; meaning tab le ts work great in conjunc-t ion wi th a more funct iona l computer the user may choose to l eave home. Due to the na-ture o f how we type , the v i r -tua l keyboards on most tab le ts aren ’ t e f fec t ive for some act iv i -t ies . There are o ther fac tors such as so f tware and hardware l imi ta t ions that make creat ing content l ike long word docu-

ments or deta i led spreadsheets ted ious . The area where they exce l i s consuming content . Reading documents and books , browsing the web, or v iewing images are a l l great ex-amples . I f ind my tab le t use fu l for tak ing notes dur ing lec tures and meet ings . I a l so en joy ca-sua l reading , but I ’d rea l ly l ike to see more textbooks ava i lab le for my tab le t .

I recognize that I have very spec ia l i zed interes t , but I suspect I ’m not a lone in my des i res for d ig i ta l tex tbooks ; espec ia l ly when you cons ider the space and money saved . The idea o f tak ing only a tab-le t that conta ins my notes and textbooks to c lass i s very ap-pea l ing . C layton ’s brand new bookstore , The Loch Shop, has

dramat ica l ly increased the i r ava i lab le e -books th is year , but the major i ty o f the books s tudents need are only ava i l -ab le as phys ica l books . I ’ ve been in formed th is i s because the publ i sher ’ s s imply haven ’ t made most textbooks readi ly ava i lab le as o ther books such as the Twi l ight ser ies . I ’m go-ing to take a moment for that to s ink in . I t ’ s eas ier to read about spark ly vampires than educat iona l subjec ts . Welcome to another exc i t ing year a t C layton State Univers i ty ! As Pres ident o f the A lumni Assoc ia t ion , i t i s my goa l to prov ide opportuni t ies for former s tudents to remain connected to C layton State Univers i ty and in turn , to share the i r input on univers i ty in i t ia -t ives . Of course , the impact o f

the a lumni i s minimal in day to day operat ions on campus when compared to the in f luence o f our current s tudent body . This IS your univers i ty ! So , I have to ask : What l egacy wi l l you leave for fu ture s tudents?

In 2006 Clayton State s tudents voted in favor o f a new s tudent fee that would pave the way for the construct ion o f the Student Act iv i t ies Cen-ter (S .A .C . ) . F ive years la ter , the S .A .C . has become a hub o f s tudent invo lvement , ac t iv i t ies and educat iona l exper iences . In short , i t has become a p lace for s tudent growth and deve l -opment . The evo lut ion o f the Outdoor Adventures program, Intramura l Sports program, Amer iCorps and the burgeoning Student Media organizat ions can be a t t r ibuted to the legacy o f s tudents that worked to nur-ture the S .A .C . pro jec t as we l l as those s tudents that showed a wi l l ingness to pay for i t . Where would the campus be i f those s tudents had been complacent or had chosen to absta in f rom vot ing?

On August 28 , 2011 , the Campus Events Counci l (C .E .C . ) o f fered a Midnight S tudy Break . Dur ing th is event , the S .A .C . remained open unt i l one in the morning . This a f forded the s tu-dents an opportuni ty to o f fer and rece ive tutor ing as we l l as ge t in some much needed s tudy t ime for the i r f i r s t bout o f tes ts and exams. Those s tudents made a choice to g ive up the i r personal t ime to take the f i r s t s tep towards bui ld ing a l egacy o f success . Were you one o f those s tudents? Were you a t the Student Act iv i t ies Center tutor-ing… be ing tutored… s tudying… be ing the archi tec t o f your own future achievements?

When your t ime a t C lay-ton State i s done and you are inducted into the ranks o f the A lumni Assoc ia t ion , wi l l you look back on the legacy that you have le f t as a t ra i lb lazer… as a l eader… as a v i s ionary? This edition of Sex with a Side of Fries includes advice from both the male and fe-male perspective. Sex With a Side of Fries is an advice column answered by Clayton State University students.

Dear Sex with a Side of Fries,I’m a guy and I have this female friend.

But I’d like to move it toward some-thing more. I follow her around every-

where and do stuff with her as often as I can. Every time I try to bring up my feelings for her, she brushes it off

and changes the subject. What should I do? Should I continue to pursue her?

Or am I officially stuck in “the friend zone”?

From the Female Perspective:Dear Hoping for More, Being trapped in the “friend zone” is quite a serious ordeal for a guy who has feelings for a female friend. First and foremost, it’s pretty obvious that you are pretty confident with your feelings for your friend. I also feel as though you are doing well by letting her know how you feel for her. Well, since you are taking all the right steps to get your feelings across, why is there no change in your relationship? What could you be doing wrong? The cold hard truth is, you are not doing anything wrong and you have to accept that. So, (here comes the hard part) what should you do to fix these circumstances? To start off, I want you take yourself out the equation and take into consideration how your friend might feel; try to put yourself into her position. You should not focus on whether or not her feelings are mutual with yours; you have to be patient and allow her to carefully consider how she feels. I say this because you might not know it but, always telling her your feel-

ings may be placing her into an awk-ward position where she is uncomfort-able and unable consider your feelings. So, whether or not you should continue to pursue her? Ultimately, that is a decision only you can make. Do you want this relationship to turn into something more so badly that you are willing to kill a friendship? You may or may not have realized it, but changing a friendship into a relationship is also ending the friendship. It is very chal-lenging to return to what you guys once had if the relationship goes sour. Your friend may have already realized this. She might be afraid of losing what you guys have and chooses to avoid your feelings and even her own feelings alto-gether. Now, I could tell you what you want to hear and say, “Go for it! I believe in you! She will fall for you eventually!” However, I cannot speak for you or your friend. So I will tell you the truth: if you simply give up, then you will regret it, also (equally as awful) if you push your feelings, you might not get the response you want. So, what will you choose? Now that I have given you some assistance, take my advice and come up with your own conclusion. Re-member, I am only here to administer advice and support, not to give you the answers. Good luck and be confident with whatever choice you make.

The “friend zone” is the worst, isn’t it? You try to spend as much time as you can with her and be helpful in any way possible, but in the end she may not appreciate it in the way you are

hoping for. Since she avoids the topic of “personal feelings” or “a possibility of more”, you shouldn’t just assume she’s not interested. Consider the idea that she may be doing you a favor or maybe she isn’t ready yet. Whatever the case, don’t just give up on her. Dear Sex with a Side of Fries,Here is the thing: Im more than inter-ested in one of my instructors. I guess you could say that we’re friends. We havent spent time together outside of campus, but when we see each other on the hallways and stuff like that we stop to talk and I feel like we could talk for hours. I really really like him and I think he does too, but the thing is we have never brought it up. So I don’t know if i’m just his favorite student (i know this for a fact that I am) or may-be its something more. I always try to find excuses to go and talk to him, most of the time it is school related. So i’m afraid he believes I only think he’s a great teacher and that’s all.Should I tell him? Should I ask him out? Would it be inappropiate for us to date? Im 21 and he is in his 30’s so its not like a relationship is impossible. I really don’t know what the college’s policies are on teachers dating students.

From the Female Perspective:Hello Hot for Teacher, First I would like to let you know that you are not the first person to fall for your professor and you won’t be the last. I can tell that you and your professor seem to be enjoying each other, so please do not feel uncomfort-able with the fact that you are feeling something as natural as falling in love. As of now, the relationship that you have with him is completely normal and there is nothing wrong or taboo about you dating your professor. However, I’m curious about how well you thought this through. Is this type of relationship really something worth having? Okay, (now here comes the hard part) putting the school’s policy for professors dating students aside, is this the best possible relationship for you to have? Do you understand the position

you could be putting him in by sharing a romantic relationship? For example: say you are a supervisor dating an em-ployee. If you are found out, what will that say to your other employees? Your relationship could interfere with the re-spect you have from your other employ-ees. The same principal applies with your professor. However, this is not a one-way street. How will beginning this relationship affect you? Your professor is here to educate you; do not lose sight of why you came to college in the first place. Any relationship could cloud your judgment whether it’s with someone involved in your education or not, but what will you think of his interaction with other students? What will he think of yours? Jealousy can become danger-ous in a professional environment. So I will ask you again: have you really thought this through? Is this relation-ship really worth having? Now, I am not against you having this type of relationship, nor am I for it. Your age or even the school’s policy has nothing to do with how you feel for someone and how you are will-ing to get to know that person better on a deeper level. It is possibly worth the risk if it means that you can become even happier by sharing memories with someone you believe you connect with. It would be great if your professor ac-cepted your feelings, but I need you to remember to be prepared for rejection. I say this because I cannot speak for your professor’s thoughts and feelings and neither can you. At the end of the day you will make a choice and learn to live with the result. Okay, when I read your question, I realized that you wanted to hear a yes or no, but I cannot do that. What I can do tell you that only you can come up with the right answer. Good luck. The situation you are in is not as impossible as you think.

A contracted cadet i s a s tudent that was enro l led in the R .O.T .C . program who then becomes commiss ioned as an o f -f i cer upon graduat ion . Tobo says , “My reason for jo in ing R.O.T .C . i s to ga in l i f e - long sk i l l s that wi l l he lp me to be success fu l in the mi l i tary . ” Tobo p lans to become a nurse o f the Uni ted States Army.
