After a spurt of activitythings have quieted down alittle for the CCB. There areseveral things to keep in mindduring the coming monthshowever.

Our next meeting will be on August16th at the Trinity United Methodist Church inSouthport. We have gone out of our way tomake this available to our Southport andsouthern area members so please do plan toattend. As part of long range planning I wouldlike to see a meeting in the northern area, possibly near or in Jacksonville.

To review some recent past events. Theparade in Southport on July 4th was great. Itis inspiring to see the reactions of the peoplewatching the parade when they see our float. Many stood and saluted or otherwise recog-nized our service. Many thanks to those whohelped with organizing that event. Afterwardmany of us enjoyed a wonderful afternoon onChuck and Joy Fletcher’s boat. I had almostforgot what it was like to eat a meal on a float-ing object. It has been so many years since Ihave done that. Memories came floating back.

We had a great turnout for the Subma-rine Day at the Battleship on July 12th. Wehad about 8 of our members attend to showand demonstrate what it was like on a subma-rine. Kevin Kesterson had a video that ran ona loop to show people what it was like. Thanksto all who attended and participated.

The float was parked outside the mainoffice at the battleship for the submarine ser-vice tribute. Afterwards it was taken to Rich-lands where it awaits our next parade outing:the Jacksonville Veteran’s Day Parade. I wouldlike many of us to ride the float on that day soplease make plans now. More details will bepublished as time gets near, but the date isNovember 8.

Christmas parades are coming up andwill be discussed at the August meeting. Thereare several in the area that I would like us tolook at. I would also like some input from themembership about how to decorate the floatfor these parades. I have heard some sugges-

Base Secretary, BillUnderwood, is taking pictures of each member attending each meeting. Commander Backes displays the Bookof Members at Base meetings to encourage participation.

We are still missing pictures and autobiographies for most of the Base Members. A suggestion was made at thelast meeting to write the autobiography for those who don’t submit one. In the true spirit of the submarinebrotherhood, we have composed an autobiography for Dilbert Kilroy, TM3 (SS) (page 11). Please get yourwrite up in to Charlie so we don’t have to write these for you!

2014 North Carolina 4th of July ParadeFriday, the 4th of July, 2014 dawned a very beauti-

ful day in Southeastern North Carolina. Many of usstarted out early in order to get to the meeting point inSouthport by 9:00 am. Chuck Fletcher had arranged forus to use the parking area at the Deep Point Marina as astaging area and parking area for Member vehicles.Chuck and Joy had had an even earlier start by serving apancake breakfast fundraiser at their nearby church. JimBrincefield brought the float down from Charlie’s housewith the Submarine already bolted down. We quickly

added the flags, ban-ners, chairs and a“Diving Alarm Klaxon” that Terry borrowed from BB 55 whilethe wives took food for the luncheon to Chuck and Joy’sYacht.

As soon as the float was ready and all the membershad arrived, we loaded up on the float with some wives rid-ing in the truck and some on the float and proceeded to theofficial parade staging area. We dropped off most of thewives near a good viewing area, but kept Joy in the truck toassist with navigation to the assigned staging area. Joy dida masterfuljob of per-

suading other parade participants to get out ofour way and directed us to the correct stagingspot.

It was hot! But there were occasionalbreezes and a lot of sea stories while waiting forour turn to go.

Finally, we weretold to move out and wewere lined up betweenan Animal Rescue floatand a group carrying a large flag andchanting, “U! S! A!, U! S! A!”.

As in the past parades, the verylarge crowd of parade attendees

showed their respect and gratitude to the military by standing, cheering and yelling “Thank you for your service” as our floatpassed by. Some asked if the submarine was real and somethought it was a torpedo, but you can be sure we gave themthe “straight poop”.

Chuck and Joy Fletcher graciouslyinvited CCB Members attending theSouthport parade and their families toenjoy a luncheon with them on theirfloating home, the Sea Nest. Sea Nest isa beautiful 47 foot Yacht they bought inTexas and cruised around to Southport in2003. We talked about lighting off thetwo big 3208 turbo diesels just for nos-talgia but the Nukes couldn’t hack it. Attendees brought delicious sidedishes and the Fletcher’s supplied a tastyham. Some of ussat on the bridgeand enjoyed the seabreezes while oth-ers chatted in theair conditioned cab-ins below. It wasrelaxing to feel thegentile rocking ofthe sea and the subtle sound of the wateroccasionally slapping against the hull.

Once Tim Dolan’s wife, daughter and3 week old baby arrived, Jim Brincefieldoffered a blessing and the crowd madetheir way to the galley to fill their plates. There was sliced ham, pasta salad, coleslaw, baked beans, potato chips, Italianbread, and delicious deserts includingblueberry pie, coconut custard pie, cakeand banana pudding. Some made multipletrips attesting to the quality of the spread.

On July 12th the Battleship North Carolina’sSecond Saturday Program honored the Subma-rine Service by inviting area submarine veter-ans to set up memorabilia displays in theMemorial’s theater for BB 55 patrons to visit. The Coastal Carolina Base had a great turn outagain for this event displaying materials suchas pictures, documents, flags, poopy suits, etc.Kevin Kesterson brought a video that was dis-tributed to the families of the crew of his boom-er that explained, in an interesting way, whattheir father’s jobs were while out at sea. AlsoKevin had a very comprehensive scrap book

that his wife compiled of his time inthe submarine service.

Also attendingwere CCB Mem-bers CharlieBackes, ChuckFletcher, TerryKuhn, RichardSchrum, TimDolan, DougMays, and JohnWilliamson. Each had funswapping seastories andshowing their

Welcome to Our Newest Members!

Base Hats and ShirtAvailable

Our Base Parade Float debut at the NorthCarolina 4th of July Parade in Southport wasa big success. However, several of our floatriders noted that other military based floatslooked sharp with a more uniform attire(matching shirts and hats). CommanderCharlie discussed the concept with MemberTom McFadden, proprietor of Perfect Pro-motions & More in Apex, NC. Tom broughtmock-ups of the proposed shirts and hats tothe August 17 meeting. At the meeting at-tendees liked the ideas and Tom agreed towork with Base Storekeeper Frank Black-mon to make the shirts available to Mem-bers at a reasonable price. The hats aredark blue and the shirts are red, each withhigh quality embroidered Base patches onthem. Buy from Base Storekeeper and Basegets a commission on sale.

tions but would like to hear more. If you would like totake this on either in a lead or member role let meknow.

One last item for your consideration. Step upfor Soldiers is about to start the building of their KramerHouse south of Wilmington. Plans are to have this houseused by a veteran who is attending UNCW or Cape FearCC until they graduate. The groundbreaking has alreadytaken place but they have many needs. I will suggestone way we can help meet those needs at the Augustmeeting. If you go to their website Stepupforsoldiers.orgyou can read about the Kramer House and their needs.

Labor Day is coming up in September; back toschool is also going on. Be careful out there when driv-ing and avoid those children. Have a safe last month orso of summer.

Book of Members Autobiography of the QuarterDon’t Make Us Write Your Story Like We Had to Write Dilbert’s!

Dilbert Kilroy TM3 (SS)I was going to the drug store and went in the wrong door into the Navyrecruiter. Before I could get out, I had joined the Navy. I was in GreatLakes for 6 months and went through boot camp three times. For somereason I had trouble marching in time with the others. Finally, I got out

of boot camp and went to Torpedoman A school. To my surprise I graduated top of the class and thenwas sent to sub School in New London. While at sub school, I accidentally set fire to the Escape TrainingTower and was immediately transferred to the USS Pickle (SS 69) which was in the Philadelphia ship-yard. I spent most of my time there wandering the base looking for a nosepiece for a water slug. Appar-ently they are in high demand and very hard to find. I would get there just after the last one had beenpicked up. On the boat I stood topside watch for 4 years. The worst was in January and February on the00-0400 or the 0400-0800 watches. It was so cold I had 5 sets of foul weather gear on. Once I fell over-board into the Delaware and bobbed around for an hour before the oncoming watch pulled me out. Final-ly, the Captain had a guard shack moved on to the deck for the topside watches. It was so warm that thefirst night I had watch, I fell asleep and, when the Engineering Officer came on board at 0315, I wasstartled and accidentally shot him in the foot. He threw the guard shack overboard. I finally got quali-fied 4 days before my enlistment was up. My mother was worried that I would get seasick, but I neverdid. It might have been because we never went to sea.

Thought Provoking emails from Jim Brincefield

GOODBYE MOM

A young man shopping in a supermarket noticed a little old lady following him around. If he stopped, shestopped. Furthermore she kept staring at him.

She finally overtook him at the checkout, and she turned to him and said, "I hope I haven't made you feel ill atease; it's just that you look so much like my late son."

He answered, "That's okay."She then said, "I know it's silly, but if you'd call out 'Good bye, Mom' as I leave the store, it would make me feel so

happy."She then went through the checkout, and as she was on her way out of the store, the man called out, "Goodbye,

Mom."The little old lady waved and smiled back at him.

Pleased that he had brought a little sunshine into someone's day, he went to pay for his groceries."That comes to $121.85," said the clerk.

"How come so much? I only bought 5 items."The clerk replied, "Yeah, but your Mother said you'd be paying for her things, too."

Bet you thought this was going to be a tear jerker.Don't trust Little Old Ladies!!!

BLESSED ARE THE CRACKED, FOR THEY ARE THE ONES WHO LET IN THE "LIGHT"!
