I would like to thank both the HOOSH staff and the members of our teaching staff who have made adjustments to their planning and organisation over the past 7 weeks in support of this work being completed. Dance Sport has been around for a number of years and involves a large number of primary schools from across Sydney. Each school prepares a team of up to 30 students from Year 5 and Year 6 who learn the complex skills of ballroom dancing. Team members learn a number of different ballroom dance styles and train each week with a professional dance coach. The program culminates in a combined performance evening in which each team competes against other schools in the different dance styles they have learned. This performance evening takes place at the State Sports Centre, Homebush during Term 3. I am very much looking forward to seeing the Hurstville PS team in action at Homebush later in the year. They have demonstrated from the first moment their enthusiasm to learn new skills and their tenacity. My thanks to Mrs Kapoor, Mrs Dalling and Mrs Maymystova (Koch) for taking on the organisation of this program in 2017. It is always a challenge to implement a new program of this kind and I believe we are fortunate to have them undertaking this role.

Dance Sport Challenge 2017

A program new to Hurstville Public School this year is the Dance Sport Challenge. Dance Sport has been around for a number of years and involves a large number of primary schools from across Sydney. Each school prepares a team of up to 30 students from Year 5 and Year 6 who learn the complex skills of ballroom dancing. May P&C Meeting Reminder – Tuesday 23rd May

A reminder that the May P&C meeting will be held next Tuesday 23rd May in the Community Engagement Officer’s room, located in the Belltower building at 9:15am.

Mrs Anne Ross, Director, Public Schools NSW for Georges River Network will be attending this meeting and discussing aspects of the Hurstville Public School Enrolment Policy and planning for the future. I am sure this will be a very informative session for attendees.

The May P&C meeting notification has been included in this edition of the Belltower.

Reminder – Modelling Our Expectations

An important skill for our students to develop is the skill of self-regulation. As a component of a well-rounded contemporary education, students need to have regular opportunities to refine their self-regulation skills and to witness the modelling of successful self-regulation skills from the people around them.

Based on this theme of modelling successful self-regulation skills, I am seeking the support of all school community members to ensure the consistent modelling of this skill. In the past week, we have had two specific incidents within the school grounds where community members have been involved in disagreements that have become quite heated. These incidents have required intervention and diffusing be members of the school staff. Unfortunately, these disagreements have been witnessed by some of our students and members of our school community. We must all consider the messages our actions send in terms of modelling for others. I implore all members of the school community to consider the way they are handling interpersonal issues within the school grounds and to remember to promote positive self-regulation strategies that provide great modelling for our students. Student Attendance Exemptions – Travel I have been surprised by the inordinate number of student attendance exemption requests for travel purposes that have been received by the school since the beginning of the school year. Whilst I understand that there are emergency situations in which travel during school time is unavoidable, travel for the purpose of family holidays during the school term causes significant disruption to student learning and to the educational programs in operation. I urge all families in our school community to ensure holiday travel is planned during school vacation periods. This will ensure that the continuity of each student’s education is maintained and that they are not placed in a situation where they feel disadvantaged due to having missed a significant amount of learning. I thank you for your support with this matter. Mr Mark Steed – Principal

School Uniform This year the date for our official change over to winter school uniform is 29 May. Up until that date you can still send your child to school in the summer uniform with a jumper and a jacket. Please help maintain our high standard of uniform by not sending your child to school in coloured stockings, tights or jumpers. Black shoes are part of our uniform, unless it is your child’s sports day (K-2 Thursday and 3-6 Friday, when students should be in white shoes and socks.) I have attached the uniform list for your information. The uniform shop now stocks the new winter jacket $85 and long sleeve sports shirt $35. These items are not a regularly stocked and as such, they need to be ordered. An order can take up to 8 weeks to arrive so please contact the uniform shop if you wish to purchase one of these new items. The uniform shop will advise you when your order arrives.

Notify school principal or preschool/childcare supervisor if your child has been

prescribed an adrenaline autoinjector; had previous or subsequent anaphylaxis; has any

changes in allergies; and any other health care needs or disabilities (including learning

difficulties) that may affect anaphylaxis management.

Provide an ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis completed and signed by your child’s

treating doctor. This should be updated (including photo) when adrenaline autoinjector

prescriptions are renewed (usually every 12-18 months) or if allergies change. These plans

are medical documents and must not be completed or altered by parents, school staff or

childcare staff.

Provide an adrenaline autoinjector to your child’s school, preschool or childcare.

Always note the date on the label and replace the device before it expires. Even if your child

carries their own adrenaline autoinjector you should provide another adrenaline autoinjector

to the school. This is required in case your child does not have it on them when needed.

Assist in the development of an Individual Health Care Plan or Risk Minimisation Plan.

This is a plan that school, preschool or childcare staff develop to support your child’s health

care needs.

Age appropriate education. Educate your child about how to avoid known allergens and

why it is important. Remind them that if they feel sick, they should immediately tell someone

nearby, such as a teacher or other adult. Assure them it is the right thing to do, and they

should not be afraid of getting into trouble for doing this.

Stage 3 Year 5 BYOD in Year 5

5A has been enjoying the use of iPads in the classroom. We try and incorporate an element of technology into most of our activities. We use the iPads and various apps for History, Science, English and Maths. Here are some samples of our work. We used the app “Strip Designer” to create a biography of Sir Henry Parkes. This is a great app to use for biographies, to explain things and to tell stories. Work Sample by Aixin Jin and Saajid Quader.

We also use Showbie to submit our work. These photos were from a maths lesson about patterns. We had to create patterns using unifix cubes and send them to the teacher. Photos by Xile Xie

Another app we use is Popplet. It is a way of brainstorming and displaying information digitally. Below is an example from a maths lesson about length. Students were asked to choose the appropriate unit of measurement for particular items and display them using a Popplet. By Phoebe Chen and Michelle Lin. Miss Allen – 5A Class Teacher

Chinese Community Language This term, Kindy students have been learning the numbers 1 to 10 in Chinese. They tried very hard to cut and glue to make candles showing their age, a sentence saying their age and had to write the number in Chinese. The children were interested in putting numbers 1 to 10 in order in Chinese. Pictured are some of the art and craft made by Miss Liu’s class. Miss Liu – Chinese Community Language Team

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2017 The Premier’s Reading Challenge is well underway for 2017 and has been well supported by students at Hurstville Public School. More than 500 students have begun the challenge, and 99 have successfully completed. The Challenge doesn’t finish until the 25th of August, so students have

close to three months to complete the challenge and lodge their reading records on line. Mr Philpott thinks you should try this book from the 5-6 Challenge. Valley of Gold by Jackie French One valley's stories of gold through the ages, from the beginning of the earth 4 billion years ago, through the valley's creation and the history of its alluring deposits. Interspersed with historical and geological information are stories that bring to life the valley and its occupants. Jackie French once again manages to inform and entertain in this wonderful collection of stories.

Ms Wadley thinks you should try this book from the K-2 Challenge. My Dad is a Giraffe by Stephen Michael King Is your dad big and tall, gentle and fun? Can you climb up his legs, over his head, slide down his neck and ride on his back? Maybe your dad is a giraffe! A whimsical, imaginative story about the fun, gentle dads we love, from one of Australia's favourite picture-book creators.

PSSA Years 3-6 Sports News The Botany Bay Zone Cross Country was held on Wednesday 17th May at Scarborough Park and Hurstville had 32 students attend the carnival. They were all great ambassadors for the school, with a special mention to Moussa and Oka for their assistance of other runners who needed help during their race. What lovely, caring people we have at Hurstville! The majority of our runners finished between 15th and 40th out of an average 56 runners per race. Our best results were 10th for Max and Casey in their respective races, and 6th for Salam. Salam will now compete at the Sydney East Regional carnival on 14th June at Miranda Park. We wish her all the best for that event. In the next few weeks, all students in 3-6 will be practising athletics skills in their class groups. Class teachers will be teaching students shot put and discus skills and they will be trialling for the athletics field event finals day. In addition to this, all classes will have a high jump session with a specialist high jump coach, free of charge. Thanks go to Bob Moar for donating his time to assist our students in learning new skills.

Dear Parents and Carers, Our school has registered to participate in the 2017 NSW Premier’s Primary Sporting Challenge.

The purpose of the Challenge is to encourage students to participate in sport, games and physical activity -

and to have more students, more active, more often!

Over a ten week period, staring Monday 8th May, our school will be monitoring physical activity we do during

class time, at recess and lunch as well as during sport. What we do outside school hours will also count

towards the Challenge award. Our aim is for all of us to average at least 60 minutes a day, every day for ten

weeks.

We would especially like to invite all our families to support us in encouraging students’ healthy use of leisure

time and to experience the joy of being active together.

For Years 3 to 6, each student will be issued with a Challenge log book to record their daily physical activity.

Students’ individual weekly results contribute to the class tally.

Students completing the Challenge will receive a personalised certificate (Diamond, Gold, Silver or Bronze -

based on the class average), signed by the Premier of New South Wales.

Physical activity is valued for its physical, social and emotional benefits. It also helps young people to

develop communication skills, confidence and resilience while having fun with family and friends.

For more information on the NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge please visit https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/psc

I know our students are really looking forward to participating in the NSW Premier’s Primary School Sport

Challenge and having fun along the way!

Yours sincerely, Kate Maymystova (co-ordinating teacher) 02 / 05 /2017
