Martin-Slaughter Family reunion Cancelled

The Martin-Slaughter Family Reunion scheduled for June 13, 2020 at Hart Springs has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This reunion has been re-scheduled for Saturday, June 12, 2021 and will be held at the Hart Springs Park in Gilchrist County. Look forward to seeing you all.

We really enjoy the donations of fabric. This is one of the scenes on a panel that came in it. I’m sure the panel was a great hit in it’s day. Now, I’m not sure we can find the right person for this print.

Another week to go before we open. We’re looking forward to seeing our friends once again. The next step will be the return of the guys from Lancaster. There is so much that they need to do.

It’s watermelon season and we’re missing sitting on the porch in the

swing watching the melon buses go by. We’ll take whatever part of the old normal we can get. Maybe we’ll be able to sit and swing when we get back.

Come on out sometime in June and sit a spell. We’d love to see you.

through this rural residential area. The speed limit on SE 25th Avenue is 35 miles per hour. Mr. Crosby re-ported that Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Highway Pa-trol have all been patrolling this area to slow the traffic down to within the posted speed limit.

Commissioner Thomas recom-mended that Gilchrist County notify the adjacent property owners along SE 25th Avenue that the county is considering having 7/8 Speed Humps placed on the highway in the area in attempt to slow the traffic before a se-rious accident occurs.

The County Administrator ex-plained that Gilchrist County would send a letter to the property owners advising them of the intent to slow the traffic on the roadway by hav-ing the Speed Humps placed on the roadway. Mr. Crosby reported that the cost of the speed humps being installed on the roadway and appro-priate signage would cost $4,000 to $4,500. The Commission agreed to proceed after the residents had been notified of the proposed action.

---Hart Springs Park reopened to

the public on Wednesday, May 20th. A Hart Springs Park official asked the Commission if the reopening on Wednesday would be a restrict-ed opening or a full opening to the public. Mr Crosby reported the park would open to the general public with a maximum attendance allowed at 800 guests. He explained the park would operate within the present regulations with safety to the public being a top priority.

Commissioner Martin reported that he had been asked if Gilchrist County would extend Family Passes for up to three months, due to the park being closed in lieu of COVID-19 pandemic. The board discussed the issue in detail before Commissioner Martin made a motion to allow the extension of present Family Passes for two months for entrance into the Hart Springs Park. Commissioner Thomas gave a second to the motion before the Commission approved the motion by a 5-0 vote.

---County Administrator Crosby re-

ported to the Commission that Gil-christ County Emergency Manage-ment has requested the purchase of a Utility Terrain Vehicle to be used for transportation during damage as-sessment of an emergency situation in Gilchrist County and also special events. The Emergency Manage-ment submitted two bids received for the UTV from Interstate Cycles - $17,939.00, and Martin’s Yamaha of Ocala - $15,175.37. Commis-sioner Poitevint made a motion to ap-prove the purchase of the UTV from Martin’s Yamaha for $15,175.37. Commissioner Thomas gave a sec-ond to the proposal before the board approved the motion by a unanimous vote.

The Lower Suwannee watersheds are Long Pond and Long Pond Slough in Levy County and Manatee Springs in Levy and Dixie counties. If landowners show interest, NRCS

proposes funding applications from the Cedar Branch watershed in Levy and Dixie counties and North Old Town Hammock watershed in Gilchrist and Dixie counties.

The goal is to reduce nutrient and sediment runoff by helping farmers and ranchers use conservation practices to improve water quality, such as improving fertilizer application, planting cover crops, fencing cattle out of streams, and planting grass filter strips.

Applicants must have control of land and follow the highly erodible land and wetland conservation provisions.

_______________

Carl Raymond Swalla Carl Raymond Swalla, passed

on April 14, 2020, at 9:55 a.m. of complications from Lewy Body Dementia at the Grand Rehab and Nursing Center in Guilderland, NY.

He is survived by his wife Felice of 56 years; daughters, Dana Nilsson and Kelly Swalla; a granddaughter and grandson; sisters, Lara Kramme, Karen Ver Steeg and Linda Walker.

Carl was a 1961 graduate from East Des Moines High School. He attended Des Moines College and Iowa State University. He finished his engineering degree at California State University at Long Beach (June 1972) after which he enjoyed a life-long career working in the aircraft and space industry.

His years at Lockheed Aircraft, Douglas Aircraft, Boeing, Northrop Grumman and his tenure at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, tell the story of triumph and tragedy in these industries during this time. Among his accomplishments were working on Skylab, being selected to represent astronaut training in a video shown at Kennedy Space Center, and later, being chosen for the

team of engineers that retrieved parts of the ill-fated Shuttle Challenger mission. He was the “consummate liaison engineer” according to the people he worked with.

His love of engineering inspired him to build many things. He and his family built a 34 foot sailboat, in one year, from the empty hull and deck. They often sailed the Pacific Ocean to Catalina, California and later sailed the Intracoastal Waterway on the East Coast, beginning in 1977.

As he and his wife contemplated their retirement, Carl built their 1,800 sq. ft. home on 10 acres in Trenton, Florida, where they lived for 28 years. He also volunteered to help friends, neighbors and family on home rehab projects as well as skilled car repairs and maintenance before he and his wife moved to Glenville, NY to seek expert treatment for his disease.

I know many Gilchrist County citizens who would have liked to attend both or either of the graduations last week, but did not have the opportunity this year due to Covid-19 and social distancing. I know it was very disappointing for most of you, but I have to tell you the Processional Parades for both schools were great. In fact, friends and family really came out to support the Class of 2020 in both Bell and Trenton.

The seniors seemed to really get into the parade and many families went all out to decorate their cars or trucks for the event. Truthfully those who attended the parade got a much closer view of each senior than they would if they had attended the traditional graduation and watched from the stadium seating.

It took a little while for the school administrations to work out all the details of graduation this year because the restrictions from the state were changing so often. Once Florida headed into phase one the plans changed from families sitting in cars on the track field to a processional parade through each downtown and graduation being held on the football field at each school.

It must have taken a huge amount of coordination on the part of the schools to pull the whole event off. But our School District and the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office have a history of working together and that showed with the smooth flow of the parades. Once on the field, the entry to each field was lined with the school board members who had kind words of encouragement and congratulations for each student as they walked onto the field.

Both back drops were decorated with extra care this year. Each family or guests of the seniors were limited to only four and each senior’s group was together but distanced from the next group. So it seemed like the seniors were conversing with the families or guests and really happy to have them close to share this very special moment.

There has been a lot of talk about graduation this year because of Covid-19 and the directives from the state and national government. Some thought it should have been postponed until later in the summer. On Thursday, I had the chance to talk to Superintendent Rankin for a few minutes and we discussed graduation. While discussing the difficulties of planning graduation this year, he said that one of the seniors that had signed up to join the military would be leaving this past Tuesday and several others by this week’s end would also be headed into the military. Superintendent Rankin said he really hated to postpone graduation because he really wanted those seniors who had already joined the military not to miss graduation.

Enough said! Our seniors who are joining the military should never be left out.

All in all it was a wonderful graduation at both schools. Principal Barry in Bell and Principal Langford in Trenton did a wonderful job making the Class of 2020 graduation a special memory for all our seniors.

Congratulations to the Class of 2020!

---I made this tomato cobbler recently

and it was very good. If you are a tomato lover like me and enjoy tomato soup you will really like this one. Some time ago I ordered the tomato pie at the Over Yonder Restaurant in Valle Crucis, North Carolina and I thought this recipe sounded a whole lot like that savory tomato pie. The chef baked the tomato pie in individual size baking dishes and topped it with a cheese biscuit topping. Truthfully this recipe was just as good.

Summer Tomato Cobbler3/4 cup sweet onion, chopped 1 tablespoon olive oil or bacon grease2 teaspoons minced garlic4 cups ripe tomatoes cut into 1/2 inch cubes1 1/2 teaspoons red wine vinegar1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch

1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon black pepper1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme leavesFor the biscuit crust3/4 cup self-rising flour(I like White Lily flour)1/4 cup yellow corn meal1/4 teaspoon baking powder1/4 cup cold butter 1/3 cup grated cheddar cheese1 tablespoon fresh basil chopped2/3 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Sauté onion in oil or grease in a large skillet over medium heat for 5 to 6 minutes or until tender. Add garlic and tomatoes and sauté 8 minutes over medium heat or until just tender. Remove from heat and stir in vinegar, cornstarch, salt, black pepper and thyme. Stir gently. Pour into an 8x8 baking dish or pie plate and bake 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, stir together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, cheese, basil, and cold butter that has been grated using a handheld box grater. Next add the buttermilk, mixing just until dry ingredients are moistened.

Remove the tomatoes from the oven and drop the biscuit crust mixture by 1/3 cup fulls onto the tomato mixture, do not spread.

Bake at 375 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack for 15 minutes and serve.

Note: If you do not have fresh herbs you can use dry herbs. 1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme can be swapped for 1/4 teaspoon dry and 1 tablespoon fresh basil can be swapped for 1 1/2 teaspoons dry basil.
