Director's Notes:Sometimes we remember the strangest things. We zero in on odd details and leave otherthings out. We remember the color of a couch and the way it felt, but forget the specifictimes we sat on it. We remember clothing, objects, colors, textures but forget whereexactly they came from or how we used them. Some things we remember can take usback in an instant, like a time machine. If we smell bacon, or hear a song or see acommercial, we can go places we've been as if there was a secret device hidden deepinside us. It is as if nothing is holding us back. We see azaleas or smell toffee or shake afamiliar hand and we can be transported in an instant.

Memories hold a significant power and one that we lose sight of so often. We take themfor granted, but without them we would know nothing. Some have said they are proof thatthe soul exists. Memories are very important to actors and thus to directors. They are thebottomless caverns where we probe the depths of our subconscious for emotional material, which is vital to the life of the actor.

This play is about memory. It is recollected through the eyes of the protagonist-Tom, butif you pay attention, I think that you will see memories surface from everyone. Because ofthis style, there is a great deal of interpretation left open to directors. That is why I haveloved working on this project. It is not about following a strict guideline or rule book. The author has given me, and any other director or group of actors and technicians, whowish to engage this story, enough creative license to make it their own. When we infusethis work with our own sense of memory, it becomes new-it is reborn. It then ceases tobe just a play, it comes to life.

I believe this is not only the purpose of this play, but also the purpose of theatre. It hasbeen my goal for everyone involved in this process to leave their mark, from actors totechnicians to designers to stage managers. Theatre is a collaborative art and without thatsense of teamwork everyone suffers, not just those involved in creating but the audience aswell. I hope this play will show our attention to memories, but above all I hope that goodmemories were created and cherished in this process.

That goes for you too, audience member. Ponder, if you will, how significant ourmemories are and just where you stand with some of your own—be it joyful or painful.Coming face to face with them can only make you better, for we learn from our past. Ihope you enjoy this journey down memory lane as much as I have.
