A New Century Begins
We will be looking at art from the first two decades of the 20th century. From Post Impressionism came the group the Fauves (Wild Beasts)
and then the Cubists came along and shook the art world to it’s foundations…

The effects of Post-Impressionism
• Between 1901 and 1906, several comprehensive exhibitions were held in Paris, making the work of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Paul Cézanne widely accessible for the first time.

• French for the Wild Beasts
• The group leaders were Henri Matisse and Andre Derain. Others in the group included Raoul Dufy and Georges Braque.
• The artists shared their first exhibition at the 1905 Salon d'Automne

Cubism

Analytic phase (1907-12)
The first phase of Cubism, from about 1907 to 1912. Analytic cubists reduced natural forms to their basic geometric parts and then tried to reconcile these essentially three-dimensional parts with the two-dimensional picture plane.
Colour was greatly subdued, and paintings were nearly monochromatic.

Synthetic Cubism (1912-19)
was the second main movement within Cubism. It was characterized by the introduction of different textures, surfaces, collage elements, papier collé.
It was the beginning of collage materials being introduced as an important ingredient of fine art work.

Task
1. Research 2 different Cubist artists, write a biography of each. Include images and information about their influences. Write up in your own words.
2. 2. Produce a photographic cubist portrait of yourself or another using no more than 36 camera shots. You may do this digitally or using glossy photos.
