How To Pick 3Common Locks In30 Seconds Each(Using Only A Hairpin)
01 LOCKS
Our unique transparent cases are a great introduction to the inner mechanics of three of the most popular locking devices found around the world. Each lock has its own intricate inner workings that make the art of picking them truly a challenge!
Padlock
Cylinder Lock
Blade Lock
The most traditional and well known of the ‘lock family’,the padlock is arguably theeasiest lock to master and also the most fun. A perfect lock for a beginner to starton (especially with the transparent design).
The double sided cylinder lock may look strange, but is of course the lock you find on most doors. A tougher challenge than the padlock, but with time and practice you’ll master it in no time.
AKA the disk detainer lock is the trickiest of the three. The use of rotating discs, rather than the traditional pin and driver component, makes it trickier to master and requires professional tools.

Whilst there are a wide variety of tools that can be used to pick locks, here are the three most popular. Please note that in some countries it is unlawful for lock picks to be sold with lock sets.

Disk Detainer Pick
The most traditional and professional of lock picking tools, the standard pick set provides you with several different picks designed to target the pins on each lock.
For those who are up for a challenge or want to be like James Bond, hair pins can be twisted into picking tools that will pick the Padlock and Cylinder lock.
This strange device is the best tool available (besidesa key!) to pick the most challenging of the threelocks, the blade lock.

The padlock (aka the pin-and-tumbler lock) consists of a cylinder that can rotate within its housing (see the illustrations below). When locked, the cylinder is kept in place by several pairs of pins. The top pin of each pair protrudes into both the cylinder and the housing, thus preventing the cylinder from turning. When the correct key is inserted, it pushes the pairs of pins up so that the top pins no longer enter the cylinder.
When this happens, the cylinder can be turned
and the lock will open. Note the pairs of pins. The pins
enter both the cylinder and the silver housing around it. The springs
provide resistance to keep the pins in place. When the key is inserted, the
grooves and ridges on the key push the pins up to the correct heights so that all the pins are completely out of the cylinder, thus allowing the cylinder to turn and the lock to open.

HOW LOCKS WORK
Learning to pick a lock can be a long and time consuming process, so approach it with an open mind and carefully learn the steps for each.
By carefully pushing each pin and driver out of the locking cylinder, you allow the cylinder the freedom to turn.
The basic strategy is to use tools of your choice (commonly a pick and a lever), to apply pressure to each pin until the cylinder allows you to twist the key hole and click the lock open.
Once the cylinder is free to move, the bottom lever can be used to turn the cylinder, in turn pressuring the springs to open the lock.

Take two hair pins, remove the balls at each end and twist them into the shapes you see on the left. The tool on the left (PICK A) will be used to push the pins into place, while the one on the right (PICK B) will be used to turn the lock cylinder.
Take PICK B and push it into the bottom of lock and move it around until you feel like it’s secure and applying pressure to the side of the cylinder. This will help turn the cylinder when the pins have been pushed upwards.

Think you can master the padlock with just a hair pin in under 5 minutes? Carefully follow the instructions below and you’ll be popping locks in no time at all.
04 MASTERINGTHE PADLOCK
Continue applying pressure to PICK B and carefully use PICK A to push each pin upwards untileach of the pins are aligned above the cylinder. The pressure from PICK B should stop the pinsfalling back down once you’ve lifted them with PICK A.
While keeping pressure on PICK B like a key opening the lock (with your fore finger or middle finger), insert PICK A into the middle section and begin loosening each pin by pushing up on each one individually.
Once all the pins are aligned on top of the cylinder you should be able to use PICK B to turn the lock clockwise until you heara click.

Mastered the padlock and ready for something tougher? Carefully follow the instructions below and you’ll be popping the cylinder lock in no time at all.
MASTERINGTHE CYLINDERLOCK Continue applying pressure to
PICK B and carefully use PICK A to push each pin downwards until each of the pins are aligned below the cylinder. The pressure from PICK B should stop the pins falling back down once you’ve liftedthem with PICK A.While keeping pressure on PICK
B with your middle finger, insert PICK A into the middle section and begin loosening the pins by pushing on each one individually. The pins will be trickier to press than the padlock, so take your time finding each one and applying pressure.
Once all the pins are aligned along the bottom of the cylinder you should be able to use PICK B to turn the lock clockwise until the latch in the centre of the lock twists clockwise.

Take a torsion wrench (found in most lock pick kits) and place it in the bottom of the lock, applying pressure in a clockwise position. Keep the tension on the lock with your left middle finger to push the sidebar towards the disks.
Now pick up your double round pick and carefully place it above your wrench. Find the first disk and attempt to align the disk’s gate with the cone shaped side bar. A gate is a small groove in each disk that allows the sidebar to slot into it.
0102
This lock consists of a several layers ofdisks which all need to be individually turned until the sidebar has clicked into each disk’s gate. A disk container pick is likely the easiest option, but we’ll show you how to master the blade lock with the more common standard lock picking tools.
MASTERINGTHE BLADE LOCK
Eventually each disk’s gate should be aligned with the side bar(as pictured), allowing you to apply further pressure with the wrench, pushing the side bar into the grooves (gates) of each disk.
One by one turn each disk until each gate is aligned with the sidebar. The wrench will be continually pushing the sidebar into the disks, so you should hear a small click each time a disk’s gate meets the sidebar.
Turn the wrench clockwise and the lock should click open. This is a tough one so we recommend watching a few videos provided in our member’s resources section.
