While Noah is jumped byan unauthorized intruder onthe ark, fighting him to thedeath after one of his sonshas turned against him, an-other son’s supposedly bar-ren wife is giving birth totwins, whom Noah vows tokill because God has decreedthat everything on Earth isevil and must parish. “Noah,”the movie, is not a story ofthe world’s most famous floodthat the Bible describes.

Yet, it is a spectacular film, well acted, with impressivespecial effects and an intrigu-ing plot that although farfrom biblical description stillleaves considerable opportu-nity for renewing one’s faithand beliefs. This is not yourfather or grandfather’s Noah. Some, especially those whotake the Bible very literally, will be offended. Watchingthe film caused me to go backto Genesis (returning to theBible is not something mostmovies trigger) to comparethe original with Hollywood’sversion.

Since the Bible is short ondetails of exactly what hap-pened during those 40 daysand nights along with monthsafterward before land wasagain possible, I understandwhy director Darren Aronof-sky had to become creative toget a nearly two-and-a-half-hour show. There are numer-ous embellishments to theBible story, starting with thefirst sentence in this review. Most difficult for me to accept

were the Transformer-like“Watchers,” computer-gener-ated giants that looked morelike something out of “StarWars.” They help Noah buildthe ark (their weight atop thestructure would have surelycrushed the wooden ark inreal life) and protect the fami-ly when the remaining sin-ners try to rush the ark toavoid destruction. But as themovie unfolds, Noah’s will-ingness to follow God and hisfaith to eventually allow hu-mans along with animals andplants to repopulate the earthwas deeply moving and an af-firmation of God’s grace. Rus-sell Crowe does such a greatjob portraying Noah that it ishard to imagine anyone else. The supporting cast of Jen-

nifer Connolly (Noah’s wife),Emma Watson and AnthonyHopkins is also believable. The director’s use of extremefacial close-ups not only ofNoah but other characters isamong the film’s strengths.

If you are looking for amovie that is cut from thecloth of “Son of God” or “ThePassion of the Christ,” youwill probably be disappoint-ed, even angry. But if yourfaith is broad enough to ac-cept some of Hollywood’sflare and garnish, you couldbe delighted with this film, finding it both entertainingand inspirational. Three anda half stars for “Noah,” nowshowing in Hutchinson.

MARQUETTE – I have toadmit, this Road Trip isn’tfor everyone.

But it would sure be fun towatch.

The Kansas UltraRunnerSociety is having its annualRockin’ K UltramarathonTrail Run.

The sane bunch will stickwith the marathon, but abrave few will try a 50-milecourse through KanopolisReservoir, state park andSmoky Hill Wildlife Area.

Yes. I said 50!I’ve done the Run for the

Rocks half-marathon twice. Iwalked like a penguin bothtimes for two days, so I canonly imagine doing almostfour of those in a row.

So more power to theseelite runners.

This race is one time thatrunners can dodge horsedroppings on the horses-onlyportion of the trail. Theyshould, however, avoidclosed trails.

In this race, runnersshould keep track of their lo-cation. If they get lost, theremight a search crew sentout. However, runners areasked to backtrack untilthey find a marker.

During the race, runnersare asked to climb overbarbed-wire fences that arecovered in army blankets.

Steve Wilson fondly re-members watching “TheTrouble with Angels.” At thetime, he didn’t know muchabout the 1966 film starringHaley Mills and RosalindRussell other than it madehim laugh.

“It was hilarious,” Wilsonrecalled this week. “It was areally good comedy.”

He later would learn thatthe film was based on thebook “Life with Mother Su-perior” by Jane Trahey, andthis week Wilson will be di-recting a play adaptation ofthe book as it is performedfor the first time by the Fami-ly Community Theatre.

The story is semi-biogra-phical and follows the highjinks of a group of new stu-dents – led by Mary Clancey(played by Jocelyn Brady)and Jane Moore (WhitneyWhite) – at the strict St.Mark’s Academy, a Catholicschool for girls headed by theformidable Mother Superior(Betsy Geddes). Although itoriginally takes place duringthe 1930s, Wilson reset thestory to the ’50s so a wideraudience can relate to it.

Not surprisingly, the castis heavy on young female ac-tors – 16, to be exact – whocome from 11 area schools. Intotal, there are 25 females inthe cast.

There are two male rolesin “Mother Superior,” butWilson said neither is sizable– one of the parts has justone line.

Wilson said the largestchallenge in getting the showready has been convincingthe girls to loosen up onstage and act naturally, as ifthey were in their ownschool and not the fictionalSt. Mark’s. Throughout re-hearsals, he said, their ten-dency has been to move anddeliver their lines “realstiff.”

Another potential prob-lem was the number of

scene changes in the play –16 just in the first half andanother 14 or 15 in the sec-ond. Employing standardscene-changing techniquesof bringing on and taking offvarious props and changingout background scenerywould have caused too many

delays and broken the flow ofthe acting, Wilson said. In-stead, a pair of projectorsflanking the stage will beused to create digitalscenery using period photo-graphs Wilson found on theInternet.

Despite the youthfulnessof the cast, there were neverany problems keeping every-one in line.

“Usually when you’reworking with young people,it’s hard to keep them fo-cused,” Wilson said, “butthese have been really con-scientious.

“Actually, it’s been one ofthe best casts, as far as fol-lowing directions, that I’veever had.”

The show is considered ap-propriate for all ages, and al-though life today haschanged drastically from thetime the story was written,Wilson said the humor pres-ent in the script is timeless.

“It’s just something tocome and enjoy,” he said.“It’s about how funny life re-ally can be.”

SANTIAGO, Chile – Theyinspired generations of mu-sicians worldwide, served asthe blueprint for countlessrock bands, including Nir-vana, and got a second life asreunited alternative rockidols. Now, the Pixies saythey’re forging ahead whilestill looking for a new sound.

The Boston quartet re-leased their debut, the EP“Come on Pilgrim,” in 1987.Their college-radio hits in-clude “Monkey Gone to

Heaven,” “Here Comes YourMan” and “Where is MyMind.” They disbanded inthe early 1990s and reunitedin 2004.

Since then the band hadreleased only one song,“Bam Thwok,” in 2004.

But that changed in June, when a video for a new sin-gle, “Bagboy,” showed up on-line unannounced. A fewweeks later, the band sur-prised fans again with an on-line collection of four newsongs released under thename “EP-1” and the an-nouncement of a global tour.

Have they found the Pixiessound they want? “Not yet. That’s still to come,” leadsinger Charles Thompson, who goes by the name BlackFrancis, told The AssociatedPress behind the scenes atthe Lollapalooza rock festivalin Chile.

“Rome was not built in aday. I think we need a littlemore time to really createsomething that’s absolutelydifferent but we’re in theprocess. With this record,we’re moving in that direc-tion.”

The Pixies hired Argentine

bassist Paz Lechantin in De-cember after Kim Shattuckwas fired after less than fivemonths on the job. She hadreplaced beloved long-timebassist Kim Deal who quitthe Pixies in June after morethan 25 years with the band.

“I like the new gal, she’ssmart, funny, plays reallygood bass, she surfs, shesings great, she’s bilingual,”Thompson said.

“And she makes us laugh,”guitarist Joey Santiagochimed in. “She feels likehome, she was meant to bewith us.”

Drummer David Loveringsaid she’s also pushing himto continue learning: “Sheis making me play better. She is a great bass player, and I don’t want to embar-rass myself.”

Thompson said the bandplans to tour more, and he es-pecially hopes to visitParaguay because he ad-mires Agustin Barrios, thelate Paraguayan classicalguitarist and composer.
