description

MARY MARTELLO and MEGAN BELLWOAR star in Martin McDonagh's Tony Award-winning debut play, a wildly funny and deeply affecting satire of the skirmishes and silent feuds between mothers and daughters. In a small town in western Ireland, spinster Maureen Folan lives with her diabolically helpless mother Mag. Maureen's married sisters escaped long ago, leaving Maureen stuck at home, chafing against Mag's cunning manipulations and lamenting her missed chances. When romance blossoms between Maureen and the sweet, uncomplicated Pato Dooley, it pits mother against daughter, setting the stage for an explosive finish. FROM THE DIRECTOR

I have a hilarious story about my mother’s death.

I have begun the story, this way, a few times. And each time the room fell uncomfortably silent. Which caught me by surprise although it shouldn’t, I suppose. We’re not a culture very comfortable talking about death and we’re certainly not a culture accustomed to fi nding hilarity in it. But I forget that sometimes… because I have a hilarious story about my mother’s death, about 60 sad stories about her prolonged illness, several beautiful stories about her vulnerability and strength, and a really great story about my wedding in a hospital. I lost her in 2009, so aside from some photos, her favorite Shaker cabinet, and a beautifully folded American fl ag, all I have of her are stories.

As with many mothers and daughters, our relationship was... complicated. We often failed to understand each other, we frustrated each other, and as I was in my mid-20s when she had a debilitating stroke, we never had the opportunity to fi nd the comfortable rhythm of an adult relationship. Which I do think we could have done—we loved and respected each other deeply and maybe most importantly, we lived 400 miles apart.

Maureen and Mag are not me and my mother, nor you and your mother, I hope. But McDonagh invites us to recognize ourselves (maybe our worst selves?) in them. And when fi nding the jokes to play in his script, I thought of my mother a lot. I asked the actors questions like, “What’s the best way to get under her skin?” “What drives her crazy about you?” “What will win you this fi ght?” Because, like my mom and me, Mag and Maureen seldom understand each other, yet paradoxically, they know each other better than anyone. In McDonagh’s dark world, this translates to a casual brutality with each other and diffi culty in letting go of a thousand tiny, daily grievances, making the rhythms and rituals of their life together both a torment and a comfort. And that can be hard to watch, sure. It’s also pretty hilarious.

McDonagh confronts the brutal stuff of life with a gleeful, irreverent playfulness. He teases hilarity (but also beauty and poignancy) from life’s most serious moments. So maybe you think it’s strange that I have a hilarious story about my mother’s death (which I’d be happy to tell you, just ask… it really is good). But my mom would get it, I think. And, given that Mom’s relationship with her mother was… complicated, I think she’d like this play a lot. I hope you do, too.

—Kathryn MacMillan
