Believe it or not, we are already half way through the first academic term and as the Christmas break approaches LiverpoolSU has plenty of exciting events, campaigns and activities planned to keep you entertained!

As your students’ union, LiverpoolSU is here to help you get the most from your whole university experience whether it is your academic, social or

work life. As an LJMU student you are automatically a member of LiverpoolSU and can take advantage of everything we have to offer you during your time at university.

From getting involved with one of our clubs and societies, to joining us at the NUS National Demo in London or going on one of our amazing Give It A Go trips, there is something for every LJMU student to get involved with this month, so keep reading…

LiverpoolSU are going to the 2012 NUS National Demo in London, and you are all invited!

NUS National Demo

Tom Aldus, VP Activities:

“I attended the last NUS demo

in 2010 and thought I was in for

a day of shopping and laughs

in London, how wrong I was… I

was angered about the decline

in education and support

across the UK and from that

day on I became an activist,

I then went on to become a

student leader and now we

have a real chance to turn the

tide of cuts to education and the

public sector. This time we set

the agenda, this time the fight is

in our hands and it’s our chance

to show just how important

education is to our society. This

is a day not to be missed!”

Paul Abernethy, President:“I can’t wait to get to London for #demo2012 because the current state of society is not only unacceptable but downright offensive. We have a government who have tripled tuition fees, we have public sector jobs being cut left right and centre and we have millions of unemployed… this is not right. We need to show that together the student movement says no to the cuts, no to the higher education reforms that are ripping the country apart and no to politicians who broke their promises to students in the last general election!”

Curtis Reid, VP Community Engagement:“Coming to Liverpool from outside and becoming Vice President Community Engagement, has made me realise just how much Liverpool as a city thrives and depends on its student population. I believe that this is our generation’s chance to reclaim education as a public good. I view the cuts as a knock to liberation especially, which is only possible in a society where education is available to all and seen as a positive, potential source of social transformation for marginalised groups; namely Black, LGBT, Women and Disabled etc. who will feel the cuts even more than most. I urge you to join myself and thousands of others across the country making a stand!”

Kate Wilkinson, VP Academic Quality:“2010 was the start of everything for me as an activist; the demo was a massive eye opener. I soon realised the seriousness of the issue I was ‘accidently’ marching for and the injustice in the government’s education policy, I quickly realised this was not and IS not good enough. In spite of this, what really astounded me was the sheer impact and enthusiasm of these 50,000 activists. You are no longer a single voice but part of a massive collective who do have to capacity to make real change.

Since then we have seen some devastating cuts to education provision, tuition fees rise to 9k and been outright lied to as a student movement- this is why I will be marching.”

Tickets for the National Demo cost £10 - with £5 returned to you on the day – and can be purchased from the LiverpoolSU reception or online at www.liverpoolsu.com/events. Tickets include return travel to London by coach, departing at 5.30am from the Metropolitan Cathedral.

The Amazing Teacher Awards: nominations open

“ It is about making the subjects that you teach interesting so it engages students with your subjects.”

“ Someone who encourages discussion and participation, someone who is punctual and sets a good example to their students but at the same time always having enjoyment, I think that is the best way for students to learn.”

LiverpoolSU’s Amazing Teacher Awards celebrate the high standard of teaching and support that is offered across LJMU. If you have an amazing teacher, we want to hear about it!

• Centre for Alternative Technology, November 3rd

Everything you’ve ever wondered about sustainable living CAT have tried it – or will. From environmentally responsible buildings to renewable energy generation, and from sustainability in the home to organic growing. The future is green and its starting here.

Come and see a community putting it all into action, and explore how science and innovation is helping to build a sustainable future.

• Active Adventures, November 10th Assault course, High ropes and Power fan! High ropes: Including 52 elements over two levels, this course is one of the largest in the UK and a real challenge. Power fan: This is a real test of nerves as you approach the dispatch point of our very own powerfan freefall jump – simulating the feel of static line parachute jump this will rattle even the most fearless!

• National Media Museum, November 17th Find out everything you ever wondered about the media at this unique museum, home to over 3.5

million items of historical significance. It includes the National Photography, National Cinematography, National Television and National New Media collections as well as galleries investigating and celebrating film, photography, television, animation and new media. The museum is also home to 3 cinema’s including the UK’s first IMAX theatre.

Visitors can also watch BBC in Bradford presenters and researchers collating news stories and broadcasting online and on-air in this real, working exhibit.

• Paintball, November 24th Which course will be victorious in the LJMU paintball battle?

In a unique indoor paintball arena, all the advantages of a large outdoor playing area but in a safe, warm, dry environment and best of all, no mud! Whether you’ve been before or are a complete beginner this is guaranteed to be a brilliant day out.

Club/society of the monthThe LJMU Food society

Our chosen society of the month for November is the Food Society!

Dedicated to fine food, the society holds regular meetings, as well as annual events to places such as the BBC Good Food Show and Cadbury World! Whether you have an interest in cooking or baking, or whether you are just a fan of good grub, this society could be the one for you!

You may have even seen the LJMU Food Society stall at our welcome fairs, where they were giving out delicious cheese and home-made cookies!
