It’s the season to be cautiousvehicle.Make sure the Emergency Telephone

numbers are saved on your cell phoneas well as family members.Have an emergency contact person on

your cell phone as well as familymembers. The emergency contactperson should have you and yourfamily’s vital information, medical aiddetails, allergies, chronic illness orconditions for example when you cannotspeak for yourself it is vital for EMS tobe able to get hold of someone who hasall these details.Be aware of pedestrians, cyclist and

animals, especially outside of town.Reynders emphasised that motorists

and passengers should always beaware of where they are so that theycan be reached quickly in the case of anemergency.“A lot of times we get accidents on the

N1 between Pretoria and Polokwane oron a road between Bela Bela andThabazimbi and we are too far to reachthem from our base this wastes a lot oftime and may even cause someone todie,” he said.Reynders further encourages motorists

not to talk on their cell phones and keepthe music in the vehicle on such a levelthat the occupants can still be aware oftheir surroundings and hear other roadusers. In the case of passingemergency vehicles, Reynders said tomake way for these vehicles but not tobrake in front of them and not to attemptto pull over at the side of the road ifthere is no safe lane to do so.The BEAT would like to remind our

readers that drinking and driving is aserious offense and is one of the biggestcauses for fatalities on our roads.

South Africans have yet again reachedthat time of year where the majority ofus venture off to various holidaydestinations.Unfortunately, it is also during this time

that media will most likely be litteredwith reports of accidents on ourcountry’s roads.Barely two weeks into the festive

season, The BEAT had received fourseparate accident reports that haveoccurred on the N1-Highway to andfrom Bela-Bela.According to the information received

there were no fatalities reported butmost of the passengers involved had tobe taken to the nearest hospital due toserious injuries they had sustained.Gerrit Reynders, spokesperson for

Tromar Emergency Services, notedthat the holidays are a busy time for allsectors involved in working with lifethreatening emergencies and advisedthe following when travelling to andfrom holiday destinations:Make sure your vehicle is serviced

before leaving on holiday — Brakes ingood working order, Window wipers ingood working order, tires have enoughthread and tire pressure is correct forroad conditions.Make sure all your vehicle’s lights are

in working order.Make sure there are two emergency

triangles in your vehicle in case of anemergency.Place them on a safe distance from

the vehicle — if the average speed onthe road is 120km/h, place the triangleat least 200 m away from the vehicle.Have a basic first aid kit available in

The end of an era: Nelson Mandela

Bernice Mills

By now the entire world knows thatSouth Africa’s first democraticallyelected president, Nelson RolihlahlaMandela, has passed away at the ageof 95. Africa’s elder statesman passedaway at 20:50 on Thursday, 5December in the presence of his wifeand members of his family. After the National Party came to power

in 1948, he became involved in politics, rising to prominence in the ANC’s

Defiance Campaign. He presided overthe Congress of the People in 1995and, while working as a lawyer, he wasrepeatedly arrested for seditiousactivities, and unsuccessfullyprosecuted in the famous TreasonTrials from 1956 to 1961.Although he was initially against violent

protest, he co-founded Umkhonto weSizwe, the militant wing of the ANC, in1961, and initiated a campaign ofsabotage against the government. In 1962 he was arrested, convicted of

conspiracy to overthrow the state andsentenced to life in prison in the RivoniaTrial. During the trial he spoke possiblyhis most famous words: ‘I have foughtagainst white domination, and I havefought against black domination. I havecherished the ideal of a democratic andfree society in which all persons livetogether in harmony and with equalopportunities. It is an ideal which I hopeto live for and to achieve. But if needsbe, it is an ideal for which I am preparedto die.’ This sentiment, and the courageit took to speak it aloud when asentence of death is a very realpossibility, speaks volumes of Madiba’scharacter.Mandela served over 27 years in

prison while an international campaignwas waged to secure his release. Hewas eventually freed in 1990 and joinednegotiations with President F.W deKlerk to abolish apartheid. The first multiracial, fully democratic

elections were held in South Africa in1994, and Mandela led the ANC to alandslide victory and became the first

black president of South Africa.During his term of office, he instituted

a new constitution, still known as one ofthe most fair and open in the world. Hecreated the Truth and ReconciliationCommission, introduced measures toencourage land reform, combat povertyand expand healthcare services. He declined to run for a second term,

choosing instead to focus on charitablework and HIV/AIDS through the NelsonMandela Foundation. On his 80th birthday in 1998 he married

Graça Machel, the widow of formerMozambican president Samora Machel.Finding retirement too boring for his

lively mind, Mandela reverted to a busyschedule after a short time of quiet, meeting with world leaders and celebri-ties and working with his namesakeorganization, the Nelson MandelaFoundation. In June 2004, citing his failing health,

Madiba announced that he was ‘retiringfrom retirement’ and retreated almostcompletely from public life.He was hospitalized in June this year.

In September he was discharged fromhospital although his conditionremained severe, and passed away onthe 5th of December.During his life, Nelson Mandela

received more than 250 honours, including (with former president F.W. deKlerk) the Nobel Peace Prize. Hechanged the face of South Africa and, although he left us before we could fullyrealize his dream for our country, noman has ever deserved the words Restin Peace more.

Residents of the Waterberg wereshocked and horrified when Vaalwater’spolice department arrested two localshop owners on charges of rape. Theaccused were 24 and 28 years oldrespectively, while all five the childrenthey attacked were under 8 years of age.The parents of the victims had

It was heartbreaking to cover the story“Matric farewell ruined”, which waspublished on 11 October, with a followup on 1 November. The story was about Grade 12students of Makhutjisha SecondarySchool in Mookgophong, who werefailed in receiving a proper send-off.It took months for many of the

parents to save for the trip, wantingthe best for their children. The

Imagine bringing a child into this world ata clinic where none of the babyincubators are fully functional, or beingtold that your serious injuries could notbe tended to due to inadequate supplies. The report “Health Centre conditions a

DISGRACE”, published on 7 June 2013with a follow up on 5 July 2013, revealed

the terrible conditions in which patientshad to be treated and the upsetting wayswilling medical staff treated patients withlittle or no medication due tounavailability thereof. The centre has since received some

students also went all out to dress upfor the day that turned out to behorrible. They had it bad during thetrip, from the unsafe transport toterrible food, unhygienic sleepingrooms, bathrooms and dirty swimmingpool. They had all these regardless of a

fee of R650 per student that the poorparents had to cough up for the trip.In the midst of this heartbreaking

event, no one had the guts to comeforward in order to be heldaccountable for risking with thestudents’ lives in care of spendingother people’s hard earned money.Weeks after the trip the parents were

still waiting in anticipation to hear thesolution and way forward, expecting toget their money back.Neither the school teachers, SGB,

principal or the circuit manager cameto their rescue. The provincial Department of

Education was not even notified aboutthe incident, yet it concernedstudents. This story expressed the

heartlessness of how money hungrypeople can be, determined not to letanything or anyone stand in their wayof getting their hands on the sweat ofthe disadvantaged. Photo: LizzyBapela

The child’s grandfatherappeared in the Bela BelaMagistrate’s Court onMonday 26 August oncharges of failing to properlysecure a firearm. The tragedy of this story is

made more poignant by thefact that, according toBobo’s mother, the childrenwere like sisters. Theyshared their whole lives, from toys to clothes, andtaught each other abouttheir languages andcultures. The Mahlangufamily even took the otherchild with them to church inHammanskraal. The onlyguest at Bobo’s fifthbirthday was the other child, because Bobo wanted onlyone special guest.

It’s that time of year again! The time of year when, for reasons

beyond our understanding, evenSouth Africans, residents of a landmore famous for its sunshine thanits snow, start to dream ofmistletoe, holly and a whiteChristmas.Yes, that’s right, it’s very nearly

Christmas. And although there is a pall over

Christmas this year, with the fatherof our nation having passed on, it isalways important to remember thatthere is still reason to celebrate.Another year has passed without

the end of the world coming. Weare, each and every one of us,citizens of a free and democraticcountry who may, in only a fewmonths, make our voices heard inthe general elections. If you think of Mandela this

Christmas, try not to dwell on oursadness that he has passed on.Think instead of how he changedthe world. Try to imagine what yourlife might have been like had henever been born.Try to be kind to your fellow man.

Happiness is not a zero-sum game, dear readers; someone else beinghappy does not mean that in someway there will be less happiness foryou. Happiness, like most thingsthat are important to us (love, justice, freedom) is that wonderful(yet boringly named) thing called anon-zero sum. If you makesomeone else happy, yourhappiness can increase because ofit. If you make others free, it doesnot mean that you are less free, butmore. The more you give, thisChristmas season (and not justChristmas) the more there is,because the simple fact is thatkindness creates more kindness ina never ending cycle — the equaland opposite to ‘hate begets hate’.Mandela understood that, I think. He understood that happiness was

to be shared, that joy wassupposed to be shared, thatfreedom for one is useless unless itis freedom for all. He understoodthat it only takes one person tobreak out of a cycle of hatred tochange the world forever. This Christmas, do what he would

have done. Be kind, be loving. Begenerous with your time even if youhave nothing else to offer. Begin acycle of kindness in your town. The rewards will be greater than

you could ever imagine.

St. Augustineon ChristmasAwake, mankind! For your sake Godhas become man. Awake, you whosleep, rise up from the dead, and Christwill enlighten you. I tell you again: foryour sake, God became man.

You would have suffered eternaldeath, had he not been born in time.Never would you have been freed fromsinful flesh, had he not taken onhimself the likeness of sinful flesh. Youwould have suffered everlastingunhappiness, had it not been for thismercy. You would never have returnedto life, had he not shared your death. You would have been lost if he had nothastened ‘to your aid. You would haveperished, had he not come.

Let us then joyfully celebrate thecoming of our salvation andredemption. Let us celebrate thefestive day on which he who is thegreat and eternal day came from thegreat and endless day of eternity intoour own short day of time.

He has become our justice, oursanctification, our redemption, so that,as it is written: Let him who glories gloryin the Lord.

Truth, then, has arisen from theearth: Christ who said, I am theTruth, was born of the Virgin. Andjustice looked down fromheaven: because believing in this new-born child, man is justified not byhimself but by God.

Truth has arisen from theearth: because the Word was madeflesh. And justice looked down fromheaven: because every good gift andevery perfect gift is from above.

Truth has arisen from the earth: fleshfrom Mary. And justice looked downfrom heaven: for man can receivenothing unless it has been given himfrom heaven.

Justified by faith, let us be at peacewith God: for justice and peace haveembraced one another. Through ourLord Jesus Christ: for Truth has arisenfrom the earth. Through whom we haveaccess to that grace in which we stand, and our boast is in our hope of God’sglory. He does not say: “of our glory”,but of God’s glory: for justice has notcome out of us but has looked downfrom heaven. Therefore he who glories, let him glory, not in himself, but in theLord.

For this reason, when our Lord wasborn of the Virgin, the message of theangelic voices was: Glory to God in thehighest, and peace to men of good will.

For how could there be peace onearth unless Truth has arisen from theearth, that is, unless Christ were bornof our flesh? And he is our peace whomade the two into one: that we mightbe men of good will, sweetly linked bythe bond of unity.

Let us then rejoice in this grace, sothat our glorying may bear witness toour good conscience by which weglory, not in ourselves, but in the Lord. That is why Scripture says: He is myglory, the one who lifts up my head. Forwhat greater grace could God havemade to dawn on us than to make hisonly Son become the son of man, sothat a son of man might in his turnbecome son of God?

Ask if this were merited; ask for itsreason, for its justification, and seewhether you will find any other answerbut sheer grace. — An excerpt from asermon by St. Augustine

As that time of the year where wecelebrate the birth of Christ approaches,The BEAT interviewed the elderly of Bela-Bela to hear their views about the day. These senior citizens were asked for shortcomments on what comes to their mindswhen they think of Christmas, how will theycelebrate theirs this year and with whom? All of the people we spoke to did not leave

former president Nelson Mandela out oftheir responses. Some of the elderly citizens did not even

want to give comment or take pictures, saying that they no longer trust anythingsince the death of Mandela. Theyexpressed their sadness over Mandela’sdeath, saying that they are scared andthink that the hardships that theyexperienced previously might resume. The interviewed said that they are scared

apartheid might resume, governmentcould cut-off their grants, heartfelt prisonsentences might also be brought back andSouth Africa could be the unsafe countryever. Though the elderlies will becelebrating Christmas by spending the daywith their families, they said that it willnever be the same again with Mandelagone. Many said that they thought of himduring special holidays, elections andsoccer games.

One lady, who chose not to be identified, said; “I refuse to have my photo taken, aswhoever owns the newspaper sell theaged to outside countries. They mightchase us away, take our grants or even killus. I am scared for my life. Old people arealways in danger in this world,” she said. All the elderlies wished for Mandela’s soul

to rest in peace and said that they prayGod gives him a warm welcome when hearrives in Heaven.

This is the time when families shouldbe together no matter how far we stayfrom each other. We should eitherspend the day together at home or atchurch, praying and rejoicing. This yearwe will celebrate it remembering that weare free from apartheid because ofMandela. He has done a lot for the nationand I am glad he died peacefully and notcruelly like other freedom heroes.

Lydia Boshielo:

This time of the year means comingtogether as families to celebrate the birthof Christ and rejoice. We usually cook up afeast, different types of food that we do noteven crave for during the year and eat withour relatives, friends and neighbours. It willnot be the same Christmas with Mandelagone and this is so sad. He has done a lotfor the people and now the illness took himaway from us. Who will do good things forthe children now? Who will make laws thatprotect the aged and the vulnerable?

Johanna Seema (photographedwith her niece Tshegofatso):

This is the time to rejoice, celebrateand be with family.Whoever stays far away from home

must go back, as it is custom to spendthese holidays with loved ones.We usually go to church or visit each

other as relatives, just to be togetherand celebrate. It is sad though that our hero and role

model Mandela died before he couldalso join in on the festivities.Death should have at least waited till

the new-year. Even then he wassupposed to bepresent to see theresults of theelections. There isnever a good timefor such a greatman to depart.

MerryChristmas
