Principal’s MessagePrincipal’s Message Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that we are already into the third nine weeks of school! I

hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season shared with family and friends.

Please keep our school calendar handy at home and/or work to keep up with

the important dates and activities for your children.

Please give every effort to making sure your child is attending school every day

and arriving on time. We have many students who are tardy several days a week

and are missing valuable instructional time each day. While we know that there

are times when a child is really ill and needs to stay home, we feel that every

minute of instructional time is precious. With your help we can stress the im-

portance of arriving on time and making every minute count! Try to leave home

a few minutes early to avoid the long car line at 7:55. Students can be dropped

off any time between 7:35-8:00. If you bring your children, the car line does

need to be used. It is NOT acceptable to park and allow your child to walk

across the front yard with or without you. We appreciate your cooperation

with this for the children’s safety.

Report cards will go home on January 8th. Please make sure you check your

child’s grades and review their progress with them. There will be no school on

January 21st for the celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Our school-wide

Science and Social Studies Fair will be held on Thursday, January 31st. We look

forward to lots of great projects!

Our PTA fundraiser, the World’s Finest Chocolate Sale begins on Janu-

ary 23rd and will continue through February 7th. Get your chocolate for

your valentine early!! The profits of this sale will benefit all students and teach-

ers by providing supplies and technology for our classrooms. We sincerely

thank you for your support of the candy sale.

Sixth grade Career Day will be January 24th and 25th. Ms. Kabrich has many

wonderful presenters lined up to speak to our students about careers in their

future. I would like to thank Ms. Kabrich for her hard work on scheduling these

presentations and to our fantastic parents who participate in the sharing of their

careers with our students!

LEAP Phase I testing (4th grade only) will be on Tuesday, March 19th

and LEAP and iLEAP testing for ALL grades will be April 8th-11th.

PLEASE do not make appointments for your children on these dates. Students

need to be at school all day during testing week. Thank you for your coopera-

tion in helping your child be successful!

LHMS PTA President’s ReportLHMS PTA President’s ReportLHMS PTA President’s Report

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Thank you to all who volunteered at the last Beacon Bash

to make it a success. The children enjoyed the activities!

Congratulations to Ms. Warren! She was selected as LHMS PTA Educator of Distinction. Ms. Warren is a fourth grade teacher at

LHMS and was selected as a State Teacher of the Year last year. We wish her the best in competing for Louisiana PTA Educator of

Distinction.

Also congratulations are due to students of LHMS for winning Reflections at District level. They are Gabrielle Theriot, Dawson Mil-

len, Aidan Farrell, Georgia Clare Davis, Grace Ware, Jack Piwko, and Skye Howard for Visual Arts and Ashton Ebert in Dance. More

information on the categories they won can be found on page 5 of this newsletter.

The World Finest Chocolate sale kick off is January 23. We will be selling chocolate covered almonds. Your child must return the

permission slip to participate. Also, please note that one case of chocolate is two cardboard containers or 50 boxes. This is the

PTA’s main fundraiser and the monies raised will support Technology at LHMS. With the budget cuts that have occurred and more

cuts coming, this is one way as parents we can help support LHMS. So let’s make it the most successful chocolate sale ever!

Hopefully everyone received an Albertson’s Community Partners card. Remember to have your card scanned when you shop at

Albertsons so LHMS will earn a percentage back. If you need a card, email [email protected].

Our next smoothie fundraiser is January 17th so be on the lookout for the order form. Also please note there is a limit of two yo-

gurts per student. Domino’s Pizza Night is January 17 too. Be sure to send in your receipt the next day with your child’s name and

teacher. The class with highest total receipts wins a pizza party! Thank you.

On February 7, the PTA will host another Staff Treat Day. Parents are asked to send in snacks - sweet, salty, or anything! Please

email [email protected] if you would like to help. Treats need to be dropped off by 9am that morning.

Thank you to all the students who participated in the Safety Poster contest. There were many creative entries. The LHMS winners’

names are on page 6 of this issue of The Beacon. District winners will be announced in February.

Lastly, it is not too early to start thinking about serving on the PTA Board or as an Officer on the Executive Board for 2013-14.

There are several Committee Chairs whose children are moving to Junior High and leadership is needed. My daughter is moving to

Junior High too so I cannot be President or Co-President for a fourth year. If you would like to inquire about openings, please email

[email protected]. Thank you!

Louisiana Education Superintendent John White visited the Central Office of the St. Tammany Parish Public School

System Tuesday, December 18, to recognize 27 schools for recently announced significant improvements to their

School Performance Scores.

Administrators, teachers, and parent representatives from the 27 schools designated “Top Gains” schools for the

2011-2012 School Year were congratulated for their accomplishment, with each school receiving $8,500 for education

projects and expenses.

Superintendent W. L. “Trey” Folse, III was presented with a symbolic check for $228,253.95 representing the total

award funds that will be distributed to the winning schools. “We are here to honor the schools in our System who

earned top honors in School Performance,” Superintendent Folse stated. “This is a very proud accomplishment.”

In his comments, Superintendent White said, “This is the largest group of Top Gains schools I have visited.” Every

school in the state tries to make gains, White said, but only a small number of schools made Top Gains.

Lake Harbor Middle was one of the 27 schools designated as a “Top Gains” schools for the 2011-2012 school year.

It's a New Year and time to prepare for the

next school year too! Lake Harbor needs a

new volunteer to take over the school supply

pack program for 2013-14. The job entails

keeping track of orders, preparing deposits,

and then distributing the pre-packaged sup-

plies to the classrooms a couple of days be-

fore school begins. If you are interested,

please contact Katherine Racine @ 985-807-

Congratulations to all of our winners

and good luck at the district level!

It has been a great fall semester for the YAP group here at

Lake Harbor Middle School. This is our first year meeting by

grade levels. The reason we meet this way is because the

group is just so big. We had a great Thanksgiving Pet Food

Drive during the month of November! We had over 700

pounds of dry kibble donated to help feed the hungry dogs and

cats here in St. Tammany Parish. That donation of 700 pounds of dry kibble was not all, however!! In addition to

the kibble, we had canned foods and treats that were donated also! Way to go!! We’ve also had some great pre-

senters this semester as well. Ken Roche with Equestrian Angel, Dr. Katie Maher with Maher Animal Hospital,

Rachael Creech with Adventure Pets, horse rescuer Lisa Sharp and Cindy Sibley with New Heights Riding Therapy

Center came out to share with our students. As I’m always telling the kids, it only takes one to change the

world. These presenters are great local examples for our kids. Please keep in mind that we will have our Crea-

ture Comfort drive in the spring. As you clean out your closets and come across any unneeded blankets, towels

or sheets, please save them for our comfort drive. These items are needed daily at our local St. Tammany Hu-

mane Society. During the spring semester, we are looking forward to visiting with Good Dog Naturally, Thor-

oughbred Horse Rescue, Dr. Becky Bohm, C.A.R.E.S., Love on a Leash, Equestrian Angel, St. Tammany Sheriff’s

Office and the Drug Enforcement Agency. Thank you for allowing your children to be a part of our Youth and

Pets Group. It has been my pleasure being their mentor! Much peace to you. ~ Bonnie Poirier

Setting Education Policy in St. Tammany ParishSetting Education Policy in St. Tammany ParishSetting Education Policy in St. Tammany Parish

The policy-making body for the St. Tammany Parish School System is a board of 15 members, elected from single-

member districts to four-year terms of office. Terms of office begin in January following election. The Board

meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month to take action on Committee As A Whole recommenda-

tions. On the first Thursday of the month, the Board meets as two different Committees As A Whole, one for

Business Affairs and Administration and the other for Education and Human Resources matters. The Board also

meets in Special Session as needed during the course of the year.

Board meetings usually are held at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the C. J. Schoen Administrative

Complex at 321 North Theard Street in Covington, Louisiana, unless otherwise announced by the Board

President or Committee As A Whole Chairpersons. Three regular Board meetings are held in the Slidell area

each year. The dates and places for these meetings are designated by the Board President.

An agenda for each Board meeting is posted at the C. J. Schoen Administrative Complex and on the School Sys-

tem Web site before the Board meeting. Agendas are opened or expanded only in cases of extreme importance

or to provide timely information.

Board meetings are also available as webcasts. Visit www.stpsb.org and click on the ‘School Board’ link at the top

of the page. There you will also find information about our School Board members, Board meeting minutes,

School Board policies, student progression plans and much more.
