CASA Dancing with the StarsWanted to take a minute now that all the dust has set-

tled to thank so many who helped me accomplish Ot-tawa County CASA Dancing with the Stars 2014! First and foremost my husband and children, I spent countless hours preparing for the actual event that meant a lot of time away from home. My family and amazing friends who stepped in to run shuttle service or give a pep talk when I was a bundle of nerves(weeks before the event I might add). I held a golf scramble as a fundraiser back in October at Sugar Creek Golf Course in Elmore, to all the generous donors who helped make that possible include: North Coast Family Chiropractic, First National Bank of Bellevue, Farid Berry (Sargent & Lundy), Tim Wasserman, Chris Galvin (Lockwood Honey), Sue Magsig, Bar-B-Que Traveler, Terri McDougall, Victorian Inn B&B, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Grummel, David McDougall, Coffee Express, and the Catawba Island Club. To those who were gener-ous and donated in passing over the weeks leading up to the event on November 22, thank you for helping the children of Ottawa County.

A special thank you to Craig Olszewski, Black Tie Stu-dio, for his never ending trust and confidence in my ability. Every bump, bruise and frustrated moment was worth bringing awareness for an amazing organization in Ottawa County. As I reminded myself often (as did other dancers) it was for the children!

For all of those that purchased tickets and came out to support CASA, we packed the room at Camp Perry Clubhouse again, THANK YOU! For all of those that do-nated to the masses on Saturday evening THANK YOU! Together we raised over $20,000, amazing accomplish-ments made by all!

Thank you, Diane Ball-2014 CASA Dancing with the Stars Dancer

Beards for HopeAs we approach Thanksgiving, I have much to be

thankful for, especially the tremendous generosity and support of the Ottawa County community.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Lung cancer kills more Americans each year than breast, colon, and prostate cancer combined. It has a 5-year survival of about 16%. This is in contrast to many of the other cancers who, partly due to higher research funding, have seen 5-year survival increase to the 80 or 90% level. Lung cancer has long been considered a disease of smokers, but up to 25% of new cases, in-cluding my own, occur in non-smokers.

I am presently participating in a November event called Beards for Hope sponsored by a lung cancer advocacy organization called Free to Breathe; their goal is to double lung cancer survival by 2022 by fund-ing research. I stopped shaving and started growing a beard about the end of October and at that time I had a goal of raising $2000 but quickly surpassed that goal. To date we have raised $15,000 which will be dedicat-ed to lung cancer research to improve survival.

Our local community has been incredible. Once again, the citizens of Ottawa County have shown their good nature and support for a good cause. On a per-sonal level as a lung cancer patient, and on behalf of all other lung cancer patients, I wish to take this op-portunity to thank everybody who has contributed for their support.

Thank You,Dan Cadigan

Jinjoo Cho, Gold Medalist of the Ninth Quadrennial International Violin Competition, and pianist HyunSoo Kim will visit Port Clinton December 5. They will play in concert at 7:30 p.m. at Firelands Presbyterian Church as part of the 2014-2015 Musical Arts Series Port Clinton.

A native of Seoul, South Korea, Jinjoo Cho is a gradu-ate of the Yeywon Art School and the Korean National University of Arts. She came to the US in 2002 to par-ticipate in the Cleveland Institute of Music Young Art-ist Program. She has earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from CIM, performs worldwide and is the win-ner of many international awards and competitions. Her concert in Port Clinton affords an once-in-a-lifetime op-portunity to hear this exceptional concert artist.

HyunSoo Kim is a native of South Korea and began to play piano at the age of eight. He received a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from the University of Del-aware, where he was a recipient of the John D. Martini Award. He has performed as soloist with the University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra, the Newark Sympho-ny Orchestra and numerous community orchestras in the Delaware region. He completed his Master’s degree in Collaborative Piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2011, where he received the Rosa Lobe Collaborative Piano award. He has been a staff pianist at Kent State University since 2011. Summer 2013 he served as a col-laborative pianist at Interlochen Arts Academy. In the fall of 2013 Mr. Kim joined the CIM collaborative piano staff.

The program for the evening will include selections by Ravel, Beethoven and Schulhoff. Following the concert, the audience will be invited to a reception hosted by the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council to meet and wel-come the performers. The concert is sponsored by Bas-sett’s Market and Dubbert’s Outdrive Services with ac-commodations by Our Guest Inn. Students are admitted free; tickets are available at the door for $15.

Ag Credit is partnering with the Natural Resources Conserva-tion Service (NRCS) to provide metal signs to be placed in cover crop fields funded by NRCS’s special Environmental Quality In-centives Programs (EQIP) cover crop project.

Last August, NRCS created the EQIP project in response to the drinking water ban in Toledo. The project covered 20 Ohio counties in the Western Lake Erie Basin with the goal of reduc-ing agricultural phosphorus entering Lake Erie by increasing the amount of land planted to a cover crop. Cover crops improve agricultural productivity by improving soil health and reducing soil erosion which in turn protects water quality.

The “Farmers Protecting Our Lake” signs promote awareness about conservation tied to Lake Erie water quality. State Con-servationist Terry Cosby said, “Many people don’t know what cover crops look like. These signs will help spark conversation about cover crops and what farmers are doing to help improve water quality.”

Brian Ricker, Ag Credit CEO, and Terry Cosby, NRCS State Conservationist, met at the farm of Ag Credit member, Jerry Mc-Bride, in Hardin County, to place the first sign.

This year, thanks to the help of this program, McBride planted 374 acres of cover crops including cereal rye, hairy vetch, and tillage radishes. McBride says, “We do all we can for the envi-ronment. The more I can do to help, the better it is for everyone downstream.” He has been planting cover crops for five years and participates in other NRCS EQIP projects.

Brian Ricker added, “Part of being a cooperative is reaching out and creating partnerships with others in the community to benefit our 6,000 farm family members. These signs will be a great talking point and benefit to Lake Erie and the community.”

An unprecedented response from watershed farmers resulted in applications to plant cover crops on 86,000 acres. NRCS had funding for 60,000 acres of cover crops, although many farmers planted cover crops on their own or as part of the State spon-sored cover crop program. Learn more at www.agcredit.net .

The Port Clinton Lions have recently completed Vision Screenings for 97 preschool children in Port Clinton. Screenings were done at ICS, WSOS, Fire-lands and Marie Moon’s preschool/day cares. There were 14 referrals that happened because of the screenings.

The Lions Club is dedicated to vision projects as asked by Helen Keller many years ago. She made a speech at Cedar Point asking the Lions to help prevent blindness.

The Lions Club pays for eye exams and glasses for adults and children who have no other way to get help. The Lions Club also works in collaboration with the United Way to get in contact with people in need.

There are many fundraiser projects conducted by the Lions Club that raise money for the sight projects. These fundraisers include chicken BBQ sales at the Fourth of July fireworks, Arts in the Park and the upcoming Mystery Din-ner to be held on Saturday, March 14 at the Methodist Church.

The City of Port Clinton has released guidelines and suggestions for snow fencing during the winter months.

• Where taller fences cannot be used, the following guidelines should be used for four foot fences

• Fences should be as long as possible and placed at least 160’ front the road shoulder assuming a 6” gap.

• A bottom gap of 6” should be left under the fence.• Steel posts should be on 8’ centers. End posts should

be 6’ or less from the adjacent post to facilitate brac-ing.

• The end post should be braced with a steel post driv-en into the ground at an angle so as to extend from near the top of the end post to the ground line of the adjacent post and wired in place.

• If picket fencing is used, it should be pulled taut at least 250 lbf for a 4’ width. Synthetic fencing material also should be pulled taut, at tensions specified by manufacturer, typically 500 to 100 blf.

A rule of thumb is that fences should be at least 8’ tall. Wind direction is the most important information for the snow fence design. For Lake Erie the prevailing wind blows from southwest to northeast along the length of the lake.

Fence projects can fail because the fences are improp-erly designed or placed. One common mistake is failure to design the fence for the capacity of snow it needs to hold over the season. Placing the fence too close to the road can actually make snowdrift problems worse and is another common mistake. Documented studies for place-ment of snow fence will available at City Hall.

Lauren Lemmon and Tim Hagen of Ida Rupp Public Library, Jim Widmer, Presi-dent of Library Board of Trustees, Peggy Debien and Tim McKenna of Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Ida Rupp Public Li-brary in Port Clinton have announced their donation of $50,000 to the library for the purchase of the Collins family property adjacent to the library at 121 W. Third St. The Friends Executive Board voted unanimously to make the dona-tion after meeting with Library Director Tim Hagen and President of the Library Board of Trustees Jim Widmer.

No tax dollars or funds raised by the library will be used for the purchase of the property. The Friends of the Library organization is funded through private donations and used book sales. Since the Friends re-ceived a large donation from the estate of Edward “Tiny”

Miller several years ago, both boards have entertained the idea of buying the Collins property when it became available. The seller reduced the cost of the property as a

donation to the library.According to Friends President Peg-

gy Debien, the Friends have carefully managed the donation from Mr. Miller to make sure enough money would be available to purchase the property, as there is no other vacant property near the library. The library board of trustees has not made a decision on the future of the property, which recently became available.

This is the second recent large dona-tion to the library from Mr. Miller’s es-tate. In 2012, the Friends of the Library donated $49,000 to the library for con-struction of the Friends of the Library Plaza at the Madison Street entrance. Additionally, funds donated to the li-brary annually by the Friends have paid

for such library needs as summer reading programs, com-puters, movie licenses, iPads, educational programs, and furniture.

At the recent Magruder Hospital Auxiliary annual meeting, the Aux-iliary presented Magruder Hospital with a check for $30,000, an amount accumulated over several fundrais-ing events. Over the years, Magruder Hospital’s Auxiliary has raised and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to assist in the purchasing of medical equipment and technology for the hospital.

The luncheon is an annual event where lunch is served to the Auxiliary members by hospital staff. Auxiliary officers were presented with recog-nition pins for their years of service on the board. The event wrapped up with live entertainment from Lake Erie Local, Frankie Bickel, Ron Nisch and Jerry Davenport.

For more information on the Magruder Hospital Auxiliary, contact Kathy Gallogly at [email protected] or 419-734-3131 ext. 3256.

You might not know his name, but soon you will be seeing his work. Local artist, Nathan Holcomb’s art work is scheduled to adorn Oak Harbor the first week of December through March. Nathan is an artist, who is a recipient of services from Ot-tawa County Board and who works at Imagine Art Studio in RVI, Industries. His blue jay design has been selected along with names of local businesses to be displayed on 11 banners throughout the village.

Nate is no stranger to art. His journey began back when he was about 14 years old when he discovered that he loved to draw birds and super heroes. He took both Art 1 and Art 2 in high school, where he met a friend who fueled his passion for art. He explained that his friend, who happened to be deaf, could draw anything free hand that you could think of, and Nathan found that amaz-ing. Nate commented that watching his friend made him want to do art even more.

However, after high school for a pe-riod of time, Nathan’s interest in art declined, but recently he realized how much he missed art. Nate started to draw sketches of his sleeping wiener dog, Scooter and pictures of super heroes but he wanted more, so he decided to work at Imagine Art Studio. Nathan said when he

paints he loves to use his imagination, just be creative, and draw whatever comes to his mind. Over the last 11-12 months, Nate has cre-ated many masterpieces including the red bird design travel mugs he painted and sold at Ottawa County Bird Week, painting furniture pieces such as Mexi-can theme chair, a lighthouse table, and numerous pictures he has sold at local art shows.

In the studio currently, Nate is work-ing to finish the blue bird banners and then will begin painting Christmas or-naments. Nate already has his design on paper, a continuous clothesline full of mittens with birds soaring near them that surrounds the entire ornament. As for the New Year, Nate will start to prepare for this year’s Bird Week and eventually he would like to branch out and work on developing a comic book.

More of Nate’s work can be found at Imagine Art Studio, Magruder Hos-pital, Common Grounds Coffee Shop, and The Exponent. Congratulations Nate on Oak Harbor selecting your de-sign and we look forward to seeing your dream of being a famous artist unfold.

Now Through November

Winter weather and isolation can bring on many new issues for elders. Otterbein North Shore offers a winter stay program in its Patio Homes and Apartments. No more worries about snow removal, trans-portation to physician appointments, slippery driveways, and getting groceries. This is the prefect winter escape and so-lution for many individuals dreading the winter months.

The winter stay program is ideal for an individual who doesn’t want to move to a retirement community all year long but wants security and peace of mind from the isolation of long winter days. This option is typically offered November through April and offers a solution to liv-ing alone. At Otterbein, individuals can stay in an apartment or patio home dur-

ing the winter and try this lifestyle before making a long term commitment.

The winter stay program offers nu-merous options such as; meals, laundry, housekeeping, transportation, social and spiritual programming, snow shoveling, and much more. Each winter stay is cus-tomized to meet the individual’s needs. This is a great opportunity to join a card club, exercise group, bible study, have a free wellness check and get your hair styled. This program does not require a long term commitment so you are free to move it when it is cold outside and return to your home in the spring.

If interested in learning more about this unique program, contact Jo Ann Franks, Independent Lifestyle Counselor at 419-798-8254.

Edgewood Manor Nursing Center, 1330 S. Fulton Street, Port Clinton, will be host-ing a Breakfast With Santa on Saturday, December 6. The buffet breakfast, with the Jolly Ole Elf, requires an RSVP for a 10

a.m. or 11 a.m. seating. Guests are encour-aged to bring their cameras to take a pic-ture with Santa.

Please RSVP to Edgewood Manor at 419-734-5506 by December 3.

This season, many Ottawa County se-niors who are alone or impoverished will receive some holiday cheer thanks to the Be a Santa to a Senior® program. Sponsored by the local Home Instead Senior Care® office, the program brings together area nonprofits, retailers, nu-merous volunteers and members of the community to provide gifts and compan-ionship for lonely and isolated seniors.

“It is heartbreaking to think of the se-nior members of our community spend-ing the holidays all by themselves, with-out any gifts or any way to celebrate the season,” says Enedelia Marez, general manager of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Erie, Huron and Ot-tawa counties. “But all too often, that’s what happens when seniors live alone. It can be a really tough time of year for them.”

Home Instead Senior Care has part-nered with local senior facilities to help with the gift collection and distribution.

Participating retail locations will dis-play Be a Santa to a Senior Christmas

trees from Nov. 20-Dec. 12 that feature ornaments with seniors’ first names and their gift requests. Holiday shoppers can pick ornaments from the trees, buy the items listed and return them unwrapped (and with the ornament attached) to the store.

Be a Santa to a Senior trees will be lo-cated at Bassett’s Market in Port Clin-ton, Community Markets in Oak Harbor and Cuttin’ Loose At Lori Jo’s in Elmore.

Program partners and volunteers will wrap and distribute the gifts to local se-niors who might otherwise spend the holiday alone.

“During this season of giving, we en-courage shoppers to buy a little extra for a local senior,” said Marez. “Your gift - and more importantly the visit that comes with the delivery – could make their holiday season.”

For more information about the pro-gram, visit BeaSantatoaSenior.com or call 419-734-5050.

Each fall, aspiring ballerinas start pre-paring for Christmas early. In September, Alexis Dayton, a ju-nior at Danbury High School and a student at the Toledo Ballet, auditioned to per-form in the 74th an-nual production of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker.” The holiday ballet is staged by Lisa Mayer, The Toledo Ballet Artistic Director.

Alexis was cast in two roles, a Big Soldier in Act 1 and a Candy Cane in Act 2. Alexis balances being an active honors student at Danbury High School with classes and rehearsals at The Toledo Ballet each week.

She is also active in Key Club, National Honor Society and musical and drama performances in high school.

Alexis describes herself as driven be-cause she wants to achieve her goals in life and also because she spends countless hours each week travelling by car to dance and voice classes. Alexis has been danc-ing since age three and she is planning on pursuing a minor in dance or musical theatre in college. Alexis is the daughter of Ted and Lisa Dayton.

The Nutcracker will be performed at The Stranahan Theater in Toledo on Decem-ber 13-14. The ballet will be accompanied by The Toledo Symphony. For ticket in-formation, please contact the box office at 419-381-8851. You can also purchase tickets online at stranahantheater.com. Ticket prices range $24-$54.

Immaculate Conception School counts blessings of friendship

The IC Preschool gave thanks on Thursday for a table full of treats and the blessing of friendship. The class made their own butter and cornbread and enjoyed other fruits and vegetables as well. The class-room was decorated with pump-kins, at teepee, and even a pilgrim or two. “Thank you Jesus” was the motto of the day Thursday and ev-ery day!
