We are beginning the second half of the Elk year. April through September has seen some changes that have led to numerous successful activities. The officers and committees have shown enthusiasm leading to a heightened pride in member participation and involvement. I hope this will continue into the second half. October is ENF month. We are striving to increase our per capita to qualify for the Grand Lodge grants. We have seen an increase in contributions last month. We hope to see more donations and look for some fundraising activities at the Lodge this month. Our goal is to surpass $4.65 per member (the GER’s goal). So many new events took place recently that were well received by members and guests. The Crab Feast chaired by Paul Holton and Dave Wert was fabulous. Dessert night (Karen Boyd & Phyllis Patterson) was a new creative activity that was tasty. Guest chef French cuisine dinner (Debbie Roberts and I) served 102 members and guests. Would you like to volunteer your culinary skills some 3 rd Wednesday’s dinner? Last month’s steak night was the largest yet (97). Remember if you are bringing a group (6 or more) for steak call early in the week to let us know. We have a standing order each month from Acme getting great boneless NY strip steaks. Sam & Nancy Lesher did a fantastic job raising the pig THE BEACON Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks A Fraternal Organization CAPE HENLOPEN LODGE NO. 2540 The Beacon OCTOBER 2016 EXALTED RULER’S MESSAGE Gary Eckenrode Exalted Ruler “Elks - Enthusiasm and Effort Leads to Excellence” and chairing the “pig roast”. Elvis would have loved this pork dinner which preceded the Elvis Tribute show. Wow, another packed house where the members were entertained and danced the night away. Thanks for the delicious dessert Lisa Travis. Our positive image and involvement in the community was enhanced by hosting 2 events last month. The Beebe Hospital Foundation had a men’s health night with speakers and did various screenings. They provided a dinner for those attending. Acme Pharmacy gave flu shots to anyone, 65 & over that came. Lodge #2540 is a caring organization in our coastal communities. The lodge has approved the purchase of a shuffle bowling machine that will enhance the enjoyment for our members. As in times past I was told it was very popular entertainment. We envision a league being formed to further make the social quarters a fun venue. With all these programs and activities we hope it will make our members proud to say that they are ELKS and create interest in others to join our outstanding Order. Our second meeting of the month (October 18 th ) we will host Southeast District Deputy, Lodge #2540 members, John Loftus. Come to the session to hear about the Grand Lodge programs. We are striving to promote the goals of our GER Michael Zellen. Our last initiation we had nine new men and women join our ranks. This brings our half way total to 65. It looks like another large group will be initiated October 15 th . Our goal is at least 100 new members initiated. Along with the transfers (8 as of last month) and reinstatements (2), let’s strive to “kick down the door”, our GER’s motto

OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS

The August dinner/dance was enjoyed byeveryone dancing to the music of The Jones Boys. Thanks again to all the volunteers, including frontdesk, set-up, chefs, servers, and clean-up crew.Special thanks to our treasurer, Karen, whovolunteered to “bus” tables; she also washed allthe silverware. It is with a sad heart that Iannounce John Marcus will no longer be able towash dishes for the dance due to back and hipproblems. Good luck with your health issues,John! If you are interested in washing dishes forthe dances, please let me know. The morevolunteers I have for this job, the less you will haveto volunteer. The 50/50 in August netted $118.

The Halloween dinner/dance on October 28,2016 will feature music by Sky Brady; dinner willbe beef goulash. As usual, dinner begins at 6pm; dancing at 7 pm. Costumes are encouraged, but not mandatory. There will be costume judgingwith prizes being awarded. Tickets can bepurchased until October 26 at the lodge for $15.For planning purposes, it is important to pleasepurchase your tickets by this date and mark theticket sales sheet if you would like to sit at aparticular table or with a group. If you have anyquestions about the dance, please call Doris(302-231-8274 or [email protected]).

No dinner/dance will be held in November dueto Thanksgiving. The next dinner/dance is NewYear’s Eve. More information will be announcedat a later date.

Also, we have new members that areinterested in giving dance lessons to Elkmembers. Barb is a former Rockette and lovesto teach; she suggests maybe starting with “tap”.I will put a list on the Entertainment Bulletin Boardfor interested Elk members to sign up.

We are always open for new ideas for thedinner dances or any other activities for theenjoyment of Elk members. Please contact Dorisif you would like to help or have ideas for bandsor DJs. Some Elk members have come forwardwith new band ideas; I am looking into bookingthese groups next year which may require a priceincrease. Also, we are always looking for moreteam members to help at the dances. Thanks,Doris Hornbeck,Dinner/Dance Chairperson
