Shooting for London Last shot

celebrated at PCMSAlumni on hand for final game in 1922 buildingThe last game played at Port Clinton Middle School took place on Thursday, Feb. 2, when both the seventh and eighth grade boys teams played Huron. For decades, Redskin players have taken the court in the 1922 building, which was the high school through 1963. About 60 PCHS alumni were in attendance to witness the last game in the current building. The new Port Clinton Middle School will open in 2012. A ceremonial tip-off with John Papcun, Class of 1956, started the event. Papcun is in both the Port Clinton High School and University of Toledo Halls of Fame for Basketball. Alumni took the stage/gym floor to take their last shot at the basket followed by the current middle school teams. After the net was cut down, PCHS Senior Emaleigh Dunn sang the Alma Mater as the lights on the gym floor faded. Pictures from the event along with video and a slide show of former basketball teams dating back to 1915, can be found on the Port Clinton City School District website at www.pccsd.net under News. Though the seventh-graders lost their game against Huron 49-31, the eighth-graders remained undefeated in the Sandusky Bay Conference winning 54-49.

Olympic shooting teams will be finalized at Camp PerryBY STEVE COOPER CMP Writer More than 200 air rifle and air pistol shooters entered the second to last stage of their U.S. Olympic Team journey Dec. 3 and 4, seeking positions on the mens and womens air rifle and mens air pistol teams at the Civilian Marksmanship Programs (CMP) airgun center in Anniston, Ala. The USA Shooting event was the first of a two-part series of contests that will finalize who will represent the U.S. in those shooting disciplines at the 2012 Summer Games in London, England, in July and August. Currently there are two slots open in both mens and womens air rifle and two slots open in mens air pistol. The journey will come to a conclusion at the CMP North Marksmanship Center at Camp Perry on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 25 and 26 in the USA Shooting U.S. Olympic Trials for Airgun. Both days of competitive shooting are open to the public at the CMP. Each part of the two-part trial is comprised of two 60-shot standing matches and finals in mens air rifle

and air pistol and two 40-shot standing matches and finals in womens air rifle. There is no womens air pistol in the Olympics at this time, however; womens air pistol competitors will use the trials for competition experience. The leaders of Part 1 were determined by highest aggregate qualifica-

tion scores plus the higher of two finals fired over two days. The same course will be fired again in February. Its safe to say that only those competitors who finished high in the rankings each day in Anniston will have a chance at locking up roster slots when the competition concludes at Camp Perry.

Top shooters at Camp Perry for Army Junior ROTC Service ChampionshipsThe top Army Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps individual and team air rifle shooters from 16 states as well as Germany and Guam will gather this weekend, Feb. 9-11, for the 2012 Army JROTC Service Championships. The actual shooting competition will be on Feb. 10 and 11, at the Civilian Marksmanship Programs Marksmanship Center North, Camp Perry. The competitions will be three-position air rifle events fired at a distance of 10 meters. The Army JROTC individuals and teams that qualified for this championship won qualifying matches up through brigade level. The top teams and individuals from the Army Service Championships will represent Army JROTC at the all-service JROTC national Championships in Anniston March 22-24.

PCHS alumnus John Papcun (center) took part in the ceremonial tip-off at Port Clinton Middle School. The Last Shot event was held during the last home game to be held at PCMS. The new Middle School opens in 2012.

Gardner calls for Marshall Plan for Lake ErieState Representative Randy Gardner today urged state leaders to adopt a Marshall Plan for Lake Erie, calling a healthy Lake Erie critically important to our environment and for jobs and our economy. Gardner, a former history teacher, made the analogy of the kind of bipartisan intensity establishing the Marshall Plan U.S. aid to post-World War II Europe to what is needed to restore a healthy Lake Erie from growing problems associated with widespread algae. The potential magnitude of this crisis cannot be understated, said Gardner in a letter to Gov. John Kasich and legislative leaders. We must engage in this fight with a sense of urgency equal to the value Lake Erie holds for Ohio and America. Gardner co-hosted a legislative hearing on the health of Lake Erie in December with Rep. Dennis Murray. At the hearing, Murray, Gardner and House Agriculture and Natural Resources Chairman Dave Hall recognized Kasich for his concern and support for Lake Erie and called for strong action. Im not sure there is any challenge facing Ohio that can yield greater bipartisan teamwork than protecting and healing Lake Erie, Gardner said. It will take our best efforts to be successful. Gardner said all those with concerns and ideas must be included in the solution, including agriculture, wildlife advocates, local government officials, legislators, the travel and tourism industry, small business

owners, state agency leaders and others. While some have identified agricultural runoff as a key issue, Gardner said municipal waste problems and violations at waste plants in Detroit contribute to polluting Lake Erie. He said legislation may be necessary to push solutions in addition to effectively utilizing federal and state funds to reduce phosphorus levels and nutrient loading that help contribute to an explosion of algal blooms in the lake.

Evergreen varieties in packets of 10 for this year include: Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, American Arborvitae and Bald Cypress. The fast-growing Green Rocket Cedar will be sold individually. These cedars will grow up to 3 per year, are deer resistant, have a strong root system and no major insect problems. They make a great windbreak or privacy screen. The following fast-growing varieties will also be available: Autumn Blaze Maple, Cleveland Flowering Pear and Tulip Poplar. Other trees available are: the London Plane (similar to Sycamore), Red Oak, Prairifire Crabapple and Canada Red Choke Cherry. Butterfly Bushes, Reblooming Purple Lilac Bushes, Pink Knock Out Roses and Red Double Knock Out Roses are also available for purchase. Butterfly wildflower mixture and a native grass packet are again available to complete your garden area. The District reminds everyone that the Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Arborvitae and Bald Cypress are only seedlings with sizes ranging from 8 to 18 inches. The following hardwoods will be between 4 and 5 feet in size and are sold individually: Canada Red Choke Cherry, Tulip Poplar, Autumn Blaze Maple, Red Oak, Exclamation London Plane, Cleveland Flower Pear and Prairifire Crabapple. Green Rocket Cedars do very well in our soil and about 2 feet in size. All are pre-packed and come complete with planting instructions. Prices range from $7 to $35. For information, call 419-8981595. Supplies are limited. The deadline for ordering is April 6. Money raised goes to support district programs throughout the year. Terra offers free tax servicesFor the second consecutive year, students at Terra State Community College will be participating in a nationwide program aimed at helping people complete their income tax forms. The students, with support from accounting faculty Jack Fatica and Terry Holmes, will be part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service. While the service is free to the entire community, Fatica hopes Terra students take advantage of the help. I hope more students use this service because many of them will qualify for education tax credits and the earned income tax credit, Fatica said. The student volunteers, who are mostly in accounting and business, have received training to prepare basic tax returns. They will prepare federal and Ohio income tax returns. City tax and school district tax returns are not part of the service. Taxpayers need to present the following items to have their returns prepared: Photo identification Valid Social Security cards for the taxpayer, spouse and dependents Birth dates for primary, secondary and dependents on the tax return Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, from all employers Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099) A copy of last years federal and state returns, if available Bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit Other relevant information about income and expenses Total paid for day care and day care providers identifying number To file taxes electronically on a Married Filing Jointly tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. Ala Carte Cafe Big changesCarry Out Dine Inn 8 oz Sirloin Steak $7.95 w/home fries, 2 eggs and toastThe Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education invited all administrators and community members attending the regular board meeting held Jan. 24 to discuss major changes in the district next school year. The board had requested cost breakdowns for two possible scenarios: 1) having kindergarten through fourth grades at R.C. Waters Elementary with fifth through eighth remaining at the Middle School; and 2) moving fourth to the Middle School and eighth to the High School. The administration was also asked their opinion on the types of programming that are most effective in teaching the students and how those programs would affect grade-level grouping. After considering class size, future

coming for BCS schoolsenrollment predictions and costs, and after listening to all input, the board decided to move forward with the following: R.C. Waters Elementary will house kindergarten through third grade; the Middle School will house fourth through seventh grades; and the High School will hold grades eight through 12. While the decision regarding grade configurations has been made, more decisions to ensure a smooth transition for all students and families will be addressed in the coming months. Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools will also be consolidating bus schedules into a single morning and afternoon route for all grade levels. This will require new starting times for the three buildings. Details will be outlined in the next issue of the Sampler. The Board also discussed the upcoming renewal levy that will appear on the March 6 ballot. While the Board is considering every aspect of the school system in an effort to cut expenses and balance the budget, the passage of the renewal levy, is critical. This is a renewal levy only and will not raise taxes. Finally, the board asked all attendees to consider new ways to communicate with parents, staff and the community. A new Communications Committee will be created to gather input from the community and set up a new system for the exchange of information in the form of comments, questions and answers.

PC boys become road warriorsBY JOHN SCHAFFNER Publisher The Port Clinton Redskins boys basketball team started out like a house on fire last Friday night in their final home game of the year against Sandusky St. Marys. And just as suddenly went ice cold in the fourth quarter in a 43-35 loss to the Panthers. I felt we had a real chance to break the game wide open in the first half, but we could not take advantage of it, said PC Coach Troy Diels when his team took a doubledigit lead. They were not in any kind of offensive flow and they were struggling from the free throw line. But we could not open it up. We played a decent third quarter but then scored only 2 points in the fourth. It is hard to win many games scoring only two points in the fourth. Thanks to a quirk in the schedule, the Redskins have seen the last of their home court for 2012. There are four remaining games on the regular season schedule and all four on the road. It is just how the schedule works out. Everyone has to play 10 home games and 10 road games and it is just happened that we played most of our home games in the first part of the year, said Diels. It wont be easy but I think it gives our kids, especially the younger ones, great experience moving forward. They start out this Friday night taking on SBC title holder, Perkins. They are very good said Coach Diels, in the understatement of the season. They have a solid post player Michael Ebert and a lot of good guards around him. Their only loss on the season came to unbeaten Norwalk, so that tells you how good they are. It now appears that Jason Faust will join Aaron Mier on the sideline for the remainder of the season with his Achilles injury. Port Clinton junior guard Kalib Shiets fires up a shot over the St. Marys defender last Friday night. Im not really hopeful about getting them back this year, said Diels. This year, the Redskins will go to Oregon Clay High School for their Sectional tournament play. The PC coaches go there on Sunday afternoon for the Tournament draw.

Weekly News From Lady Redskins go thud OTTERBEIN against Perkins Pirateswww.otterbein.org Coach Toby Bickels girls basketball team was on a bit of a roll for a while, but ran into a buzz saw on Saturday in a 51-32 loss to the Perkins Pirates. The team struggled with the Perkins defense all afternoon in a game that looked fairly even going in. Both teams entered the game with 11-5 overall records and 7-4 records in the SBC. The Lady Redskins managed just seven field goals for the entire game, but did make 16 charity tosses to keep things close for a while. Hope Thorbahn was the only Redskin player in double figures with 12. The Lady Skins play three games inside of a week to finish their regular season. Contests are at Huron on Saturday, then back home for a pair of games against Fremont Ross on Tuesday and Clyde on Thursday night.

Financial FocusValentines Day is almost upon us. To celebrate, you may want to present your loved ones with chocolates, flowers or any number of other traditional gifts. But if your valentine also happens to be your spouse or your life partner, you also might want to show your love in another way by making sure you have adequate insurance. Just consider some of the things that life insurance can do for you and your family: Pay off your mortgage With sufficient life insurance, your family can remain in their home should anything happen to you. Educate your children College is expensive, and it seems to get more costly every year. If you were to die prematurely,

Heres how to insure a great Valentines Dayyour life insurance proceeds could help pay for your childrens education. Help fund retirement Term insurance consists of just a death benefit. But permanent insurance policies, such as whole life or universal life, a tax-advantaged savings component that could help pay for your retirement and help keep you financially independent which means you wont have to worry about being a burden to your grown children. Furthermore, proceeds from your life insurance policy could help your surviving spouse retire more comfortably. Help protect your business If youre involved in a familyowned business enterprise, you can structure a life insurance policy to help preserve the business or transfer it to the next generation. Pay for estate taxes If your estate is sizable, it could generate estate taxes. Life insurance proceeds can help your heirs pay these taxes. Clearly, life insurance offers a variety of benefits. But how much do you need? And what type do you need? You might hear that your coverage should be worth around seven or eight times your annual salary. But theres really no one-size-fits-all formula. In determining how much life insurance you require, you should consider your age, your income, the size of your family, the amount of your mortgage, whether your spouse has a retirement account, your financial goals and other factors. Your financial advisor can help you assess these variables to determine the appropriate level of coverage. One final word on life insurance: Dont wait too long before purchasing a policy or upgrading your existing one. Your life insurance premium is based, in part, on your age, so the sooner you act, the better. Also, the time to buy life insurance is while you are healthy, because poor health could prevent you from obtaining coverage. As important as it is, life insurance isnt the only protection you and your loved ones may need. During your working years, you are actually more likely to become temporarily disabled, due to injury or illness, than you are to die. If you werent able to work for a while, you could help your family maintain its lifestyle if you had an adequate disability income insurance policy. Your employer might offer you some coverage as a benefit, but it might not be sufficient, either in terms of income or the length of the disability covered. Consequently, you may want to explore an individual disability insurance policy. When you think of romantic Valentines Day presents, insurance probably doesnt pop up right away. Yet, by making sure youve got all the coverage you need, you may actually be giving your loved ones the greatest gift theyll ever receive.nnn
