My second choice was my best choice

My, four years goes by fast, doesn’t it? I still can’t believe it myself.

I’ve been thinking about graduating lately, particularly since I turned in my last fi nal exam last Thursday. After I handed back my professor my blue book and left his class-room, I thought, “Am I really done?” And as I celebrated with my classmates, fl abbergast at the fact that I really had no classes left to complete, I kept doing mental double-takes.

I’m done.It’s like playing a video game and you fi nally

reached – and beat – the last level. No more bosses, no more quests.

It’s over.Coming to FIU was not an easy decision for me.

I remember, during my senior year of high school, how badly I wanted to go to another college out of the state. Reluctantly, since I did not have $20,000 for their tuition, I became a Golden Panther. I enrolled in SLS 1501, Freshman Experience as well as my other classes required for the University Core Curriculum.

I spent much of this week writing letters to my friends, yes I still send out normal mail, to tell them how much they mean to me.

While in the middle of my stack of cards, I couldn’t help but think of that Brad Paisley song, “Letter to Me” and what I would tell myself at 17-year-old.

Well fi rst off I was starting FIU. So I would begin by reminding myself that going to this school is not the end of the world. And that all of the years I cried driving to campus in the morning and lunches I ate alone in my car wishing I had a friend to talk to, will be worth it in the end.

I would tell myself that I need to stop worrying about the future, heck my 21-year-old self needs to hear that lesson from time-to-time, because the truth is no one knows what they are doing in life. It is all a matter of who puts up the best front

and who doesn’t let fear control them.

I’d then tell myself, “sorry kid, you I didn’t get that dream job right out of college, but get over it. You’re still going

to be doing what you love and working for a great newspaper.” I don’t think the 17-year-old me would believe the people I have met and the articles I have written.

I would tell myself to pay more attention during my fi rst intern-

ship to an editor named Rafael Olmeda. Because one day he will end up being that one profes-sors who inspired me and made me push myself, despite all of the red marks on my papers.

In the end, fi rst impression of FIU was wrong. I didn’t end up hating this place like I once thought I would and my time here meant more to me than I thought it would.

You’ll meet some amazing friends in college who will stay

up talking to you on Facebook when you’re upset, text you funny comments and are always up for a warm conversation. They will show you what true friendship is about, may even become like the big brother or sister you never had. Ultimately, a lot of the ones that were super close to you in high school will just end up as Facebook news-feed updates and old tagged photos.

Sadly, there will be some that fl at out break your heart and teach you a lesson in being too trusting, but that heartbreak will make you stronger.

Oh speaking of people in your life, please don’t argue with mom or dad so often. What they do, they do with the best intentions, and as nice as they are most of the time, they are not to be used as an outlet to vent all your frustrations, that’s what your Twitter account is for.

do everything, you’re life will be less complicated that way. Learn to play guitar, take an Italian lesson or two, study abroad, expand your limits and live outside your comfort zone.

When it comes to relationships and love; don’t worry. Those things should take a backseat to education, for now at least.

Be honest and clear, learn how to say “no” sometimes. You don’t always need to protect the feelings of other people. If you’re hurt let them know, just don’t be too blunt and let your temper fl y.

If you think your life is great now, you should see it four years from now. There are so many bumps and turns along the way, you really won’t know how you’ll turn out.

Honestly, it’s like Brad says in the song, “there are nowhere near the best years of your life.”

I urge those remaining to cherish it and make the most of it. And for those walking that stage with me, leave college in the past, take the lessons learned and move forward.

I was bored. I wasn’t even in an English class, so I hadn’t really started on my major yet. But I was so bitter about being at FIU that I began to look for universities to transfer to.

But then I fi nally got into my English classes: ENC 1102, what was then called Literary Analysis, now simply English Composition II, Approaches to Litera-ture and Modern Drama. I quickly fell in love with my classes and the department. I stayed.

And as I took my classes, I did my best to become involved with on-campus activi-ties. I joined The Beacon in 2007, as well as the FIU College Democrats. I was inducted into Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society. Through all these groups, coupled with my classes, I made great friends I know I’ll stay in touch with for the rest of my life – hopefully.

I say this because in September, I’ll be leaving FIU and Miami behind for good as I pursue my master’s degree in Boston, Massachusetts.

But for now, while it’s not September, I look at my cap, gown and tassel tucked away into the free bag I got from Grad Send-Off. I glance over the cords, medal-lions and single stole I will wear on April

27, as I walk across the stage to receive my fake degree, which will remind me that yes, my real degree will be in the mail – this is still happening.

I look at the dates on the fi ve coveted tickets I’ll give to my lucky family members and mentor who will attend my commence-ment ceremony. In big bold letters: “SPRING 2010 COMMENCEMENT. TUESDAY, APRIL 27, 2010 @ 3:30 p.m.” I think: “No. No, this isn’t supposed to happen yet.”

I’m supposed to fi nd out there’s a third fl oor in the Graham Center, discover how wonderful the Green Library is at night and learn about the myth of the Kissing Bridge by the Ryder Business Building, along with its quiet turtles underneath. Now I’m supposed to say good-bye?

While there have been many moments of excitement and celebration I’ll never forget, there are memories at FIU that I have had that can be considered ordinary, uneventful or mundane. I consider these just as important, or even more important than those happy times.

They only remind me that FIU is a place to which I can return – it is there where I can fi nd the cube I can spin, the books I can read and the faces who taught me everything I know.

But as for now: time’s up. And it’s time to walk.

Former Governor continues lawsuit to limit power of legislature in tuition increases

A group including former Gov. and ex-U.S. Sen. Bob Graham will continue a lawsuit challenging the Legisla-ture’s authority to set tuition at state universities, although one of its partners has withdrawn.

The Board of Governors, which oversees the 11 univer-sities, had joined the group’s lawsuit three years ago but last month reached a settlement with the Legislature to share authority over tuition and some other governance matters with lawmakers.

The suit, fi led in Tallahassee, seeks a Circuit Court order declaring the board has sole authority over those functions including tuition. It’s likely to work its way up to the Florida Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the House on Friday unanimously passed a bill (HB 7237) making changes in state law needed to carry out the Legislature’s end of its bargain with the board that lets lawmakers keep their leading role in setting tuition. Graham helped lead a citizen initiative that amended the Florida Constitution to create the board in 2002. The intent was to curtail political interference with the universities.

The amendment doesn’t specifi cally mention tuition but says “the board shall operate, regulate, control and be fully responsible for the management of the whole univer-sity system.”

The Legislature contends the amendment does nothing to block its constitutional authority over spending, which lawmakers say includes tuition as part of its revenue-raising powers such as taxation.

Gibson disagrees, arguing tuition falls outside the Legis-lature’s revenue authority because it’s a voluntary payment for contractual services.
