BBR PT technologies have been applied to avast array of different structures – such asbridges, buildings, arenas, dams, nuclearpower stations, wind farms, cryogenic LNGtanks, silos, wastewater treatment plants, water reservoirs, marine structures, retainingwalls, towers and tunnels.

BBRVT CONA CMX– latest internationally approvedpost-tensioning technologyRather than just revamping our existingproduct range, we have created somecompletely new technology whichincorporates current market needs with allthe advances and knowledge gained over thepast 60 years. The newly developed BBRVTCONA CMX family has been tested to themost stringent international testingspecifications – those of the EuropeanTechnical Approval Guidelines ETAG 013which often go further than other testingrequirements, such as those of the Post-tensioning Institute (PTI) or AmericanAssociation of State Highway andTransportation Officials (AASHTO).TheEuropean approved BBRVT CONA CMXpost-tensioning range – the PT system forthe 21st century – is used worldwide by theBBR Network. Its modular design means thata BBRVT CONA CMX PT kit can easily beconfigured to match special requirements.

EuropeanTechnical Approval ETAand CE markingPost-tensioning kits for use in the EuropeanCommunity are required to have an ETAwhich is based on a set of defined testingprocedures which must be fulfilled –including static tensile tests, fatigue tests andload transfer tests. Once the PT systems areplaced on the market, they are subjected toFactory Production Control FPC, as well as

independent and continuous surveillance.Post-tensioning kits must be installed bytrained PT Specialist Companies – such asMembers of the BBR Network – ensuring aprofessional and system-conforminginstallation.All requirements are strictlyfollowed by the BBR Network and ensure thehighest level of product quality and installation, including best health and safety standards.

BBRVT CONA CMI– internal bonded or unbonded PT systemCMI is internationally the most up-to-dateand advanced multi-strand PT system, rangingfrom 1 to 73 strands. Re-stressable,exchangeable or electrically isolated CMItendons can be offered, as well as tendonsfor cryogenic and nuclear applications.

BBRVT CONA CMF– flat anchorage slab PT systemCMF comes in small sizes and is the perfectinternal PT solution for thin concrete sections, such as slabs.

BBRVT CONA CMM– monostrand PT systemCMM tendons are individually HDPEsheathed and greased/waxed and aretherefore the ideal easy-to-use PT range forinternal unbonded applications.

BBRVT CONA CME – external PT systemCME is the ultimate multi-strand solution forPT outside of structural members and offersa wide range from 1 to 73 strands.

BBRVT CONA CMB – band PT systemThe double HDPE sheathed andgreased/waxed approach of the CMB systemmakes it the perfect ready-to-use PT solutionfor special external applications.

Compact, fast & greenCONACMX products continue to promotefaster construction programs through earlystrength concrete stressing which reducesthe construction cycle time – the earlier youcan stress, the earlier you can build.Alternatively, a lower quality, cheaper orpossibly recycled concrete can be used.CONACMX technologies remain thebenchmark for compactness in the anchorzone. Our systems use the least amount ofspace in the anchor zone, thus environmentalimpact and materials are minimized.Furthermore, a wide product range and sizeoffering promotes the use of only what isreally needed, also reducing materials andtransportation. We ensured that we understood what themarket wanted and then we delivered asolution to meet those requirements.

Additional BBR PT systemsThe BBRV PT cables are one of the earliestand most reliable post-tensioning systems. This parallel wire PT system was developedby BBR in 1944 and has since beencontinuously advanced. Furthermore, theBBR CONA, CONA compact, CONA multi,VT, CONA single and CONA flat post-tensioning systems have been applied verysuccessfully for many decades.

State-of-the-art post-tensioningA dream for engineers and architects, a delight for developers, a great tool for builders and kind on the

environment – BBR post-tensioning allows almost any shape of structure to be constructed, while reducing

environmental impacts, construction time, materials and costs. The many years invested in the development of

new technologies for the construction industry have put the BBR Network in a market-leading position.Today,

we have the best technology available – backed by the EuropeanTechnical Approval ETA and the associated

Certificate of Conformity we have secured. The BBR Network really is one step ahead of the pack!

Whether for transportation, energy, communication or sporting infrastructure, over the last 50 years the BBR Network hasdelivered a wealth of enduring andmagnificent cable-strayed structures aroundthe world. While many cable suppliers builttheir first major cable supported structure inthe late 1970s and early 80s, BBR stay cabletechnology was used for the first time in thelate 1950s and, since those days, we havefollowed on with milestone-after-milestoneand continue to set the standard in the fieldof stay cables. BBR was the inventor of highamplitude fatigue resistant wire, strand andalso carbon stay cables – and carried out theworld’s first projects. We are the companywho started it all!

BBR HiAm CONA and more –elegance and strengthThe BBR HiAm CONA parallel strand staycable system is unrivalled anywhere on the

planet. Developed by our own engineers inSwitzerland, its wide range – tendon capacity200 – 60,000 kN, advanced water tightness, high corrosion protection, simple installationand superior fatigue resistance – ‘HiAm’ standsfor high amplitude fatigue resistance – makes itattractive for the most challenging of projects.Designers and architects have particularlywelcomed the compactness of the anchoragesystem which allows them greater scope toproduce a sleeker and more striking structure. The BBR DINA/HiAm wire stay cable system– composed of 7 mm wires – complementthe BBR stay cable family.

Benchmark for test performanceBBR stay cable systems are the benchmark interms of test performance and BBR stay cabletechnology has regularly fulfilled higher testingand performance criteria – even years beforesuch testing conditions were adopted andspecified in codes and recommendations.

Staying powerSome of the most dramatically beautiful architectural designs and technically excellent feats of engineering

provide a reliable service, on a daily basis, to thousands of people around the world – many such creations have

been realized with the use of state-of-the-art BBR stay cable technologies. In 2010, the BBR Network celebrates

its golden anniversary – and over 400 major projects – in the stay cable technology arena.

A rigorous independently-monitored testingand certification regime, along with anestablished Factory Production Control (FPC)system, combined with BBR E-Trace – ourinternet-based trading and quality assuranceprogram – all make a contribution towardskeeping the BBR Network one step ahead.

Benchmark testingExtensive research, testing and developmentefforts place the BBR Network at the forefrontin the field of post-tensioning and stay cableapplications. All of the system components aresubjected to the most stringent testing andquality assurance (QA) procedures, based oninternationally recognized codes andrecommendations. Our commitment to testing has helped usdevelop a range of products which havebecome international benchmarks. Ourproducts have been tested – in independentand approved laboratories – with parametersexceeding the traditional requirements.

BBR Factory Production ControlIn 2005, we implemented the BBR FPC systemwhich provides highest product qualitystandards – and full component traceability, themost direct way of ensuring quality.Traceability is the process of recordinginformation relating to the changes made atevery point in the life of a component –starting from the raw material throughproduction, storage, supply to the PTSpecialist, storage in stock, supply, storage andinstallation on site. Our goal is the ‘cradle-to-grave’ collection of component data.Compliance with the complete FPC system isaudited by an independent approved or‘notified’ body and any non-conformity mustbe rectified prior to the CE Marking. Inaddition to our continuous audits and testingof the products, the approved bodycontinues to exert full control during thevalidity period of our approvals. These provisions guarantee proper qualityand compliance of the kit componentsdelivered to site.

Trading & QA PlatformBBR E-Trace – our internet-based software– links all members of the Global BBRNetwork including BBR PT Specialists, BBRComponent Manufacturers (CMs) and ETAHolder, BBRVT International Ltd.Thiscomprehensive e-commerce platform leadsusers through the quality process, ensuringthat each step is documented and recorded.

Our investment in quality assurance is acontinuous process covering the entire life ofour products and services. We listen, welearn and we implement.

Innovative traditions

29www.bbrnetwork.com

The BBR story began during the SecondWorldWar, when materials were in shortsupply – the import of steel was difficult and, with reduced energy availability, cement wasa precious commodity. Determined to usetheir ingenuity to overcome these limitations, the three BBR founders explored the savingsto be made by using pretensionedreinforcement for concrete support girders.

During the 1950s and 1960s, BBR developeda complete range of prestressing and post-tensioning systems, ground anchors and staycable anchorages, cover all structuralengineering applications.

From the very early days, constructionengineering firms around the world werekeen to participate in the success of BBR’sdesigns and technologies. It was recognizedthat not only a license to use the designs andsell the specialist equipment was necessary, but also that an effective process forknowledge transfer was needed to supportbest practice in the use and especiallyinstallation of BBR technologies. Thus the BBRNetwork was born and, today, it operates inover 50 different countries.

Since the early applications more than 60years ago, there have been many stories totell of BBR successes and innovation.Today,BBR technology has been applied tothousands of projects around the world –including more than 400 stay cablestructures. And the BBR success story willcontinue with yet more innovative newtechnology and projects – always staying onestep ahead!

With approaching 70 years of continuous leading-edge development in the field of post-tensioning, stay cables

and related construction engineering, the BBR Network continues the innovative traditions of its founders.

“The founding fathers of the BBR Networkwould be very proud that the flame they lit

and kindled is being held aloft by theirsuccessors – who are making it glow even

more brightly all around the globe.”
