They are there to decide what films are suitable for certain ages by following a guide of age rating and features that would be seen in a film such as violence, bad language and sexual references. All films are checked by the BBFC before they are able to be shown in the cinema so it can be cut if needed or not allowed if the film defeats all rules from the guide which they are able to prosecute. This company can apply the age ratings which every film must have; however, local councils can change the age rating of some films to make them available for younger or not allowed for anyone under 18.

Black Swan

The Black Swan is a drama/thriller of a ballet dancer wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black SwanThe Black Swan got a rating of 15 as it contains scenes of strong sex and sexual activity. However in many of the scenes the strong sex does not present a strong impression of sexualised nudity such as the sight of genitalia or breasts without any strong detail. This fits with the BBFC’s 15 rating which states that ‘Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail’.The film also shows scenes of bloody injuries such as stabbing and self-inflicted wounds which do not have much detail in them. The BBFC’s rating of 15 states that ‘Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury.Another guideline that would be checked is strong language which is featured within the film including aggressive and sexual uses.Within the film there is also a sequence in which two characters take an unspecified drug in a nightclub. The effect on one of the characters is for her to become disorientated and to experience hallucinations. The Guidelines at '15' state that 'Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse'.
