The Bay Window got to talk with Halfway to Hollywood a band from Vancouver BC Canada that made itrsquos music debut in August 2011 Grant Brenden amp Roman talk about The Band their writing process and their upcoming plans Tell us a little about each other Wersquore a 3-piece band from Vancouver BC Brenden and I grew up there and met at Simon Fraser University and Roman moved here from Mexico City a couple of years ago How did lsquoHalfway to Hollywoodrsquo come to be Brenden I had been jamming for a while in some not-so-serious bands and eventually started writing songs We wanted to make a band influenced by some of our favorites The Friday Night

Letrsquos Meet Halfway To HollywoodBoys Boys Like Girls and Marianas Trench We eventually found our own unique sound which you can hear on our new record lsquoParty Like itrsquos Prom Nightrsquo How did you choose the band name When we were recording our first demorsquos Brenden and I would sometimes jokingly say lsquowersquore halfway to Hollywood nowrsquo Anytime we finished tracking a part or whatever After considering a ton of different names we eventually realized the perfect

name had been right under our noses the whole time I like it because I think it implies optimism and moving forward Tell us the process of writing a song Usually ideas come to Brenden and I in our daily lives and then the two of us get together to develop them a bit more After wersquove got a rough skeleton we bring them to Roman and flesh them out as a band For this EP we did the fleshing-out in the studio with our producer Danny Craig Writing this

way was really cool because it added a lot of flexibility to the creative process We got to try a lot of things we wouldnrsquot have necessarily been able to if the songs had been 100 finished before we hit the studio Yoursquove received a ton of support from your fans How does it feel Amazing Itrsquos unreal what lengths our fans go to in order to help out We obviously donrsquot have as large of a fan-base as some of the bigger bands but I think our fans are some of the most supportive around Whether its putting up posters in cities wersquore touring to bringing us gifts to help make

A Memorial Day tradition

Memorial Day is the custom of honoring ancestors by cleaning away cemeteries and decorating the graves It is an old and ancient tradition we donrsquot just celebrate it here in America but worldwide Memorial Day or Decoration Day as it was first called has unfortunately never had a clear reason of how or why this holiday was created in the first placeBefore America truly grew her roots this duty or Decoration Day was usually performed in late

summer and was an occasion for family reunions and picnics However after the Civil War America needed a day to celebrate troops who have fallen in the midst of war

Soon monuments to fallen soldiers were erected in their name and ceremonies centering on the decoration of soldiersrsquo graves were held in towns and cities all throughout the nation hence Decoration Day being the original name for Memorial day We still canrsquot prove that was exactly how

Memorial Day got its true name less than twenty ndashfive places have been named in connection with this origin of Memorial Day
