National Bandanna DayOn Thursday 16 November, Neutral Bay Public School will be take part in National Bandanna Day to make a difference to the lives of young people impacted by cancer.

Every day, 63 young Australians are faced with a cancer diagnosis - either themselves or of an immediate family member. The impact of a cancer diagnosis has long-term emotional, mental and financial implications for young people, who are at considerable risk of isolation and psychological distress. CanTeen (The Australian Organisation for Young People Living with cancer) is the national support organisation for young people living with cancer, including cancer patients and their brothers and sisters.

On Wednesday 15 November and Thursday 16 November, the Student Representative Council will sell bandannas for $5.00 under the COLA and in Kindyland from 8:30am. All profits will be donated to CanTeen. Please note that our supply of bandannas is limited, so be early to avoid disappointment.

These bandannas may be worn by students on Thursday 16 November with their usual school uniform.

Please remember to send $5 to school with your child on Wednesday 15 November and Thursday 16 November so they can take part and help support this great cause!

Sports NewsHome Runners

Captain: Jeremy Davie MVP: Ethan Jahani

We played a great game this week, however, we unfortunately lost 26-20 against Artarmon 1. Man of the match this week was Ethan Jahani as he took a great catch. We had three debutants for this game.

Double Outs

Captain: Daisy Franklin MVP: Kristian Kokkinis

“And that’s a home run!” this week the Double Outs played the Neutral Bay Strikers. We unfortunately lost 12-5. Today Kristian was our Most Valuable Player (MVP). Our team needs to work a bit on catching and fielding.

Strikers

Captain: Jacob Skurnik MVP: Anneke Corry

This week we played against the Neutral Bay Double Outs. We won 12-5 and played incredibly well on field, but some of our batting not the best. The MVP this week was Anneke Corry for her persitance in base running and her positive attitude. Well done team!

MVPs

Captain: Yuma Jo MVP: Ryan Petridies

We played very well but lost 16-12 against Cammeray 4. Ryan played exceptionally well.

Stealers

Captain: Luka Cumming MVP: Brian Ann

We were playing against our fellow Neutral Bay team with a tense 19-19 game. It was a tight game but we held on well as we were missing many players. We have to improve on fielding as we let a few balls go through our legs. We have got better with our batting especially Patrick and Tiana. In fielding we did well and Tiana saved the day for us.

Loaded Bases

Captain: Isabelle Stapf-Giannakis MVP: James Crosbie

Neutral Bay 4 played against Middle Harbour. We played exceptionally well and had some incredible batting. MVP for this week was James Crosbie for his exceptional fly balls into the deep outfield. However, we need to work on our fielding, catching and communication. Sadly we lost 24-17 but yet we had an excellent game.

Glovers

Captain: Millie Rundle MVP: Oliver Franz

We played against the Neutral Bay Stealers and tied 19-19. I chose Oliver as MVP because he took many great catches.

Sliders

Captain: Lilyana Wawavanua MVP: Josie Loyd

The Sliders played Anzac Park and won 26-18. They played a great game.

Star of the WeekCongratualtions to Ethan Duhs 3C who will be playing his Violin in a Suzuki concert at the Sydney Opera House later this month. Great News!

Mrs K. Lockhart - KL Class Teacher Ms L. Csanyi - 1L Class Teacher

This week Kindergarten is looking at early multiplication. In KL we are learning to use the term ‘group’ to describe a collection of objects. We also looked at the term ‘sharing’ to describe the distribution of objects. We are learning to model equal groups and to recognise when groups are not equal in size.

In Maths groups we explored these concepts using concrete materials.

This term 1L are having explicit lessons to learn how to use different applications on the iPad. Last week 1L mastered how to use the applications Seesaw and Toontastic. Seesaw is an application where every student can save their work that they have created. Students in 1L have created and saved recount writing, voice recordings, photos of artworks and even cartoons they have created! Below are some of the fantastic works they have made!

Mr W. MacInnes - 4M Class Teacher

Stage 3 News (Years 5 & 6)

Stage News

What do you want to be when you grow up? As Year 6 enter the last five weeks of primary school, 6C was recently asked this question. There was one catch though: their answer had to be about life, not work. Here is a selection of their wise and wonderful responses.

Dear future self,

Take a moment to reflect in the past. Remember everything. The times where friendship was tested and lost. The times where darkness and doubt consumed you. The times where happiness and beautiful, fragmented memories burned strongly in your mind to keep you going. Remember hope and joy, and feel nostalgia. Most importantly, remember struggle and fear. They were both there to temper your soul, enabling you to do what you have done. The most gruelling challenges were there—every one of them—to make you stronger. Things don’t just stand in front of you, blocking you; they stand there to make you smarter, stronger, prouder and better than before. You have survived and keep surviving. There are no regrets so be thankful. Everything was worth it.

Don’t try to prepare for things you can’t prepare for. Life is full of uncertainty, but go with the flow. Just keep going with your head held high. Struggle is temporary. In the end, see how far you have come and smile. Let out your emotions and laugh. Even though people will come and go, remember that I will always be here supporting you relentlessly.

Above all, be grateful for your achievements and the little things in life that will make you smile and laugh—these will mean the most in the future. By Valerie Ngo

Dear future self,

Not all battles can be won. Some may leave me bruised, battered and altogether feeling utterly hopeless (that I can guarantee). Even though I cannot hope to triumph at everything, for that is surely impossible, I can set myself one task: to find my happiness.

While some people wish for money, expensive cars or other meaningless possessions, the only thing I want to be is happy. There will be times the world may hurt me, but I hope I can get past those times with my head held high. I hope I can be smart enough to know that it is not the worst thing ever if I slip up every once in a while.

During writing lessons with Ms Haigh this semester, Year 4 have been learning how to write expositions. Today in 4M we read an exposition about dogs, and in pairs rewrote the (boring!) start, so ours was more exciting!

We’ve also been learning about Oreo’s… sadly not the cookie! We have learned how to structure our paragraphs to make an interesting argument:

O - opinion

R - reason

E - explanation

O - opinion

Here is one of our OREO paragraphs about mobile phones:

We strongly believe that Samsung mobiles are better than iPhones. Samsung phones are much cheaper than iPhones, even though they do the same thing! You can buy a Samsung phone for $1400 but the new iPhone X will cost more than $1800! Would you rather spend the extra money on a phone or holiday?

7Neutral Bay Public School - Term 4 Week 4

The Bay Times

I know that there will be times that will make me sad. Sadness is inevitable, but I hope that, even though sometimes sadness will take over, I will not go numb. Instead, I will find the thing that makes me happiest and hold onto it like one would a lifeline because, to me, a lifeline may be exactly what it is. I want to live, not just to be alive.By Angelina Yu

Dear future me,

I hope that you are brave and adventurous because the courageous don’t live forever, but the cautious don’t live at all. Also, make sure that you still take the time to have fun every day; life is short - make the most of it. I’m proud that you still keep in touch with all your friends from school and make more fantastic memories that you will cherish forever. Remember that if you have to act differently to get someone’s approval, then their approval is not worth earning.

I hope that you still put 100% effort into everything you do and still have enough valuable time to spend with your family. Even though you may think that your family is slightly annoying sometimes, you will miss them so much when they are not there. Always remember that if you get paid a lot of money and don’t enjoy your job, it’s not worth the effort. Work will take two-thirds of your time and if you’re not happy there, how can you be happy when you have time off? You will always be dreading your next day at work and that dread will swallow you whole. The important thing is to make the most of life; you only get one attempt at it. By Macklin Houe

Dear future self,

Imagine two women under a tunnel. One stops to talk, wearing some plain old clothes. The other brushes past her, intent to reach work on time, dressed in a tight, but smart dress. While their characters are very different, their features are identical as is their age. They both have a mop of streaked, light brown-blonde hair, clear blue eyes and straight nose. However, the businesswoman’s eyes are dull and tired, with a step that is purposeful but plain and monotonous; while the other woman has eyes that are bright and sharp, with a bounce and a spring in every stride.

The two part. The one in weathered, but practical clothes skips into Sunny Sidewalk, while the one in immaculate dress turns into Old Avenue. Either of these women could be my future. I could bask in the sunshine of Sunny Sidewalk, knowing that I am going to do something great that day, something new but

important, something that could save lives, change lives for the better. All the same, I might trudge through the cold, bare winds of Old Avenue, knowing that I will do the same boring work—writing emails, reviewing programs, typing documents with little progress, little good done after all those hours of monotonous labour. I could be someone different and new, or someone standard, having fallen into the pit of dull, normal life knowing the alternative path to take. The decision seems easy. By Adie Connor

Carnival Coordinator needed for 2018

Next year’s major school fundraiser will be the School Carnival, usually held in September. We are now looking for a Carnival Coordinator to start planning for this very popular school event. Responsibilities of the role include:

• Coordinating and setting up a carnival committee.

• Booking a date and organising the rides and road closure.

• Organising stalls and allocating classes, tickets and wristbands.

• Engaging with class coordinators to organise rosters.

The role can be filled by one person or can be a shared position. If you think this might be you, or just want to know more, please contact our P&C President, Sharmila Soorian at [email protected]. Ideally we would like the new Carnival Coordinator to start this year or early next year.

End of Year Celebration Drinks with Art AuctionWe’re looking forward to the year-end celebration drinks organised for each year to mingle and catch up before the summer holidays, with the Kindy, Year 2 and Year 4 ones coming up quickly next week (next Friday 17th November). At these events, there will also be an opportunity to bid for some beautiful art works created by each of the classes. Please read below for further details, and see the attached flyers.

Each class has worked hard with their teacher to make a beautiful piece of art which has been professionally framed. To raise money for the school, these art works will be auctioned off through a combined online auction and live auction event process. The way it will work is as follows:

• The art works will first be offered through the website 32Auctions. Here is the link so you can begin to bid already. (Please note the photos on the online website 32Auctions were taken prior to them being framed due to the reflection of the glass.): https://www.32auctions.com/NBPSAuction2017

• Each grade will have an end of year celebration drinks night held for all the parents and carers to attend. At this event, bidding for the children’s art pieces will continue as a live auction.

The art pieces will be on display at the school 1 week prior to your event. On the day of your event at 6pm the online auction (32Auctions) will cut off and be carried over to the evening live auction. This will take place at approximately 8.30pm. The Year 2 & 4 auction will take place at 9pm to allow for parents who have just attended the Kindy auction to change rooms.

• If you are unable to attend the evening function, but would like to bid, please have a friend who is attending bid for you on your behalf. We will warn guests 5 minutes prior to the auction to start to call those not attending, to give them an equal chance to bid.

• If you do not have anyone you know who is attending, but would like to bid at the live auction then please contact your class parent.

Please save the following dates for the year events:

• Kindy – Friday 17th November (co-located with Year 2 & 4 event) Please see page 11

• Year 1 – Thursday 23rd November (combined with Year 3)

• Year 2 – Friday 17th November (combined with Year 4) Please see page 11

• Year 3 – Thursday 23rd November (combined with Year 1)

• Year 4 – Friday 17th November (combined with Year 2) Please see page 11

• Year 5 – Thursday 30th November

• Year 6 – Tuesday 12th December (art auction at end of the farewell dinner)

P&C AGM Wednesday, 22 November, 7:30pm Our next P&C Meeting on 22nd November 2017 will also be the Annual General Meeting (AGM), at which all positions will be declared vacant and elected. Please keep an eye out for further details about positions being sought and the nominations process.

Each Year Coordinator is responsible for working with the P&C Events Coordinator to organise one school event during the year (e.g. Grandfriend’s Day, Father’s Day Breakfast, etc), as well as one or two events for that class year (e.g. Year drinks, picnic, etc). If you think you might be interested in the role for next year, please contact either our Events Coordinator, Vanessa Baumer-Rowley at [email protected] or our Communications Coordinator, Monica Gessner, at [email protected].

Joining 2018 Junior BandOur Junior Band is open to students in Years 3 and older. There are no auditions for Junior Band. All children interested in being part of the band are very welcome. Each year in Term 4, students from Year 2 (and older students) interested in joining the band program are invited to join Junior Band for the following year. This involves:

• Wednesday 8 November - from 11:00am all of Year 2 will have the opportunity to listen to NBPS’s current Junior Band.

• Thursday 9 November - from 9:15-10.00am all of Year 2 will attend a short ‘Ear Test’ where students will complete a short test of their understanding of rhythm, pitch and melody.

• Monday 13 November - from 8.30am there will be an information morning for parents in the hall. This is your opportunity to come along to learn about the band program and ask questions of our bandmaster.

• Monday 20 November - those children who are interested in joining Junior Band 2018 will attend an Instrument Selection Session (or blow test) in the hall, conducted by professional tutors under the direction of our bandmaster. This will be organised class-by-class starting at 9:15 am.

Don't forget to complete the Instrument Selection Form available on the school website or at the link below. This form needs to be printed and returned in hard copy as notes are made on it during the instrument selection test. If you cannot print a copy of this form, ask staff at the front office for a hard copy. Forms must be returned to the band mailbox next to

the front office by the 15 November 2017. http://bit.ly/1Ry5xqk
