Principal’s NewsSchool Planning 2017In the near future we will be commencing the process of organising classes for 2017. If you will be moving from our school at the end of this year it would be appreciated if you could contact the office. Also if you have any special social considerations you would like the school to be aware of in planning classes (e.g. siblings close in age) you are welcome to send a letter/email to me providing details by Friday 16 September.

CarnivalThank you for your support of our school Carnival. An enormous number of hours had gone into the preparation of the event from Belle Jackson and a dedicated team who worked hard to ensure a successful day. Thank you for all the parents and staff who gave time on the day to assist, and the many generous people and businesses who donated items. It was wonderful to see our school and wider community join us for a wonderful Neutral Bay social event.

Please see Community News on pages 9 and 10 for photos of the Bay Fair.

P&CThe next meeting of the P&C Association will be on Wednesday (14 September) of this week at 7.30pm. The discussion topic for the night is meeting our new school counsellor and discussion of the counsellor role.

Tell Them From Me SurveyYou’re invited to participate in the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey designed for parents and carers. This survey focuses on student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices.

Parents and carers are an important and valued part of our school community. We will use the survey feedback to make practical improvements and inform school planning.

This online survey takes about 15 minutes to complete. It is anonymous and voluntary.

If you have more than one child at this school, and feel that your children’s experiences differ, you can complete the survey more than once.

You can access the survey in your own time, between 14 September and 30 September 2016.

Go to the site below on your computer or tablet:

    https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/6f4kd

More information on the Partners in Learning survey can be found on the NSW Department of Educations’ TTFM website: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/

IllnessA number of students of recent times have attended school not feeling well. Your assistance in keeping children not feeling well at home is appreciated.

School NewsWaste Free Wednesday is still up and running! We ask that every Wednesday your child brings their lunch to school in non-disposable containers. Choosing products that have less packaging results in less waste that needs to be disposed of. It not only makes good environmental sense, but it makes good economic sense too. Waste free lunches are often cheaper, and in most cases a lot healthier too!

Look at some of these great waste free lunches in 4H:

Each stage will have Mr Broccoli looking out for which class has the most waste free lunches on Wednesdays. If your class wins, you could get Mr Broccoli in your classroom for a whole week!

Junior Choir Congratulations to the Junior Choir for their excellent singing and behaviour at last week’s Primary Proms rehearsal. They have worked hard to learn the challenging repertoire and I was very proud of them.

This Friday (16 September) is our dress rehearsal and concert at the Town Hall. The children will need to wear to school their black choir T-shirt (which has been sent home on Tuesday), full-length black pants or knee-length skirt, black socks or tights and (shiny) black shoes. Please ensure children have a snack, lunch and a drink as they will be unable to use the canteen. We will depart school at 11.30am and return at 4.15pm. Parents need to deliver their children back to the Town Hall at 6.15pm for the concert. We are looking forward to a fantastic performance.

Stage NewsKindergarten NewsIt has been a very busy and exciting week in Kindergarten. Last Friday we went to Taronga Zoo and had lots of fun seeing the animals, as well as learning more about the animals in our Backyard to Bush lessons. We would like to thank all the parents who came on the day to help out with each class. We also would like to thank all the parents who helped with the carnival setting up and volunteering with the class stalls and activities. The children all had such a great time. This week we are looking forward to Musica Viva and the K-2 Sports Carnival. As well as all these exciting events that we have been doing we are learning the ‘ph’ sound and enjoying learning about Prehistoric animals. During maths groups we are learning lots about comparing the area of objects as well as measuring them using concrete materials.

Miss B Saltmarsh - KB Class Teacher

Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)In Week 7 and Week 8, 1M, along with the rest of Year 1, went on an excursion to Vaucluse House as part of their History unit on the Past and Present.

1M got to experience what life was like in the 1800’s, including games like tug-o-war, coits and skipping. They took a tour through the grand house, tried their hand at being a scullery maid, and explored the exciting rooms that Laura and Fitzwilliam Wentworth grew up in.

I’m sure if you ask any Year 1 student, they’ll say the experience was (Went)worth the long bus ride!

Stage NewsStage 3 News (Years 5 & 6)Musica Viva School Visit: TAIKOZ

This term, Year 5 has been learning about ‘Taiko’ - the art of Japanese drums. Over the last six weeks, during Miss Stone’s music lessons, students have been involved in playing drums and creating their own drumming rhythms in the unique Japanese taiko style. These lessons have culminated in the visit to the school last Wednesday by the group ‘Taikoz’

Taikoz is a Sydney-based performance group that specializes in the art of taiko. During the concert, students listened to a number of performances and were also given the opportunity to play the instruments on stage.

Mr Brown - 5B Class Teacher

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4) Last week, 4C was focusing on chance in Maths. In groups, students made a poster titled “Cloudy with a CHANCE of meatballs”, where they worked collaboratively to come up with chance related sentences.

    Here are some examples:

    • There is a 50/ 50 chance that a coin will flip on tails.

    • It is impossible for pink, fluffy unicorns to dance on rainbows.

    • It is certain that the day after Thursday is Friday.

    • It is impossible that I will ride a whale to school.

    Miss A Tran - 4C Student Teacher

The students had a wonderful time at the concert and would especially like to thank Miss Stone for the opportunity to learn more about this style of music.

    P & C NewsBay Fair 2016

Well done everyone who took part in Bay Fair 2016: our carnival was a great success on every front, but most of all it was a huge day of family fun. These are the days when our school community shines.

We saw so many happy faces – and not just on the children! The welcome return of our performance program in the school hall set the festive scene,

showcasing the talent at our school and neighbouring dance and martial arts groups. We really loved the flash mob by Neutral Bay School of Dance, and of course our wonderful Concert Band!

Thank you to every single parent, friend, teacher, staff member and community member who participated so joyfully in the carnival. It takes a lot of hands to make the magic happen: planning, setting up, working on the day and then sticking around for cleanup afterwards. Special thanks to Kim Cleghorn, the nanny to Oliver (2J) and Lachlan (4M) Doy, who hand-sewed all those gorgeous NBPS teddy outfits (then worked all day on the stall and clean-up crew)!

We cannot thank our awesome school staff and teachers enough for supporting the event. For making posters with their classes; for getting dunked for our entertainment (Miss Murray, Mr MacInnes, Mrs Stewart, Mr Shuster and Mr Kessler); for working on the book stall and a million other tasks; and for putting up with carnival stuff everywhere in the lead-up!

In particular, we’d like to acknowledge the staff and teachers of Kindyland, who’ve been working without any electricity in classrooms or their staffroom earlier this week as a result of an accidental power cut on the day of the carnival. We’re so sorry – our sincere thanks to you for your patience, good humour and resourcefulness under the circumstances!

Thanks too, to Mr Michael for all the “invisible” hard work – making sure our school is always clean, safe and well-organised, no matter what else is going on!

We will keep everyone posted with our final fundraising results, but we definitely ticked the fun box!

Missed out on a chance to win The American Girl doll?, Forgot to buy a Show Bag?Come to the Music Room on Thursday to pick one up from 2.30pm - 3.30pm.
