Dear Parents and Carers,

A Mother’s Day stall will be open on Friday 12 May. This is an opportunity for all our children to independently purchase a gift for the special person in their life with whom they celebrate Mother’s Day.

The SRCs (student representatives) will collect money and assist all children as they come with their class to make their choice. This is a fundraising event for our school. Therefore, the gift is a token of the occasion and not directly reflective of the value of your donation.

If you would like your child to be part of this event, please send $5 with them to school on Friday 12 May. It is suggested that Kindy and Year 1 children bring their money in an envelope with their name and class on it.

The P&C take this opportunity to wish all Mums, Grandmas and their families a very special day!

Kind regards, The P&C

Miss L. Irvine - 4I Class Teacher

Stage 3 News (Years 5 & 6)

Inspired by the work of British land artist and environmentalist, Andy Goldsworthy; 4I created mandala like sculptures using materials found in the environment, such as leaves and seedpods. When finished, they photographed their work for display before returning the materials used back into the environment.

Welcome to the Get PIE'ED Bakery where author's purpose is our focus.

Identifying the author's purpose can be challenging, especially when working with complex texts in Year 6. 6C have been studying the five different purposes for reading. Identifying these patterns allow us to better analyse a text to discover the author's intention. This gives us more perspective when reading as we come to understand how an author views his or her subject and how this, in turn, can shape the reader’s opinion.

So what are these patterns?

The five purposes for reading form the acronym PIE’ED.

They are:

• P = Persuade (We look for opinions supported with facts. Then we use the information provided, as well as the credibility of the source to determine the answer.)

• I = Inform (We look for facts organised by a text structure. What is the author informing us about? How is he or she organising the information?)

• E = Entertain (Most texts meant to entertain will be organised into a storyline. Therefore we should find evidence of a plot.)

• D = Describe (To identify a description, we look for evidence of imagery and descriptive language.)

• E = Explain (We look for evidence of steps teaching how to do something or how something happens. These steps may be given implicitly or explicitly.)

First, our students worked together in small groups to look for patterns and textual evidence in 15 different passages in order to identify the author’s purpose.

Students were then asked to state the purpose of each passage, as well as cite textual evidence to support their conclusion. Once completed, each group then ‘baked’ their pies by placing their passage into the correct pie tin labelled with the five different purposes.

If the purpose was correctly identified, groups followed the tradition of the bakery and played a round of Cake Splat!
