Potentially Life-altering Legislation -- Update

In this space just last month I told you about bills making their way through the Tallahassee legislature that would potentially destroy mobile home life as we know it.

I am delighted to tell you today that those bills have been amended to remove 95% of the provisions that were harmful to us. This was accomplished by an energized email campaign that many, many mobile home residents across the state participated in.

A number of Bay Lake residents joined in these efforts, sending email messages to the 16 members of the key committee responsible for previewing the legislation and making recommendations to the full legislature.

For anyone who was never before involved in a grass-roots political effort this was an eye-opening experience. The primary lesson to be learned: legislators do care about their constituents’ opinions, and sending well-thought-out, polite correspondence that explains why a bill is objectionable and how it will affect citizens in their district is influential!

There’s no doubt about other objectionable bills being introduced in the future. It will happen. When that happens and you are encouraged to “write your congressional representatives,” please remember that your voice does count and don’t hesitate to create and submit emails and/or letters that plead your case.

“ELECTIONS” ON MARCH 3RDSteve Rollison – 941-375-8110

The Bay Lake Estates homeowners association, like every other Florida corporation, is required to have an “annual meeting.” This guarantees that “shareholders” have at least one opportunity each year to express any concerns or complaints to the board of directors. Our shareholders (i.e. our members) can formally address the board of directors at any of eight membership meetings conducted monthly from October through May.

Most corporations conduct their elections of directors during their annual meeting. Directors of the Bay Lake Estates Association of Nokomis, Inc. (yes, that’s our official name!) are per our bylaws elected at the March regular meeting. By custom, newly-elected directors take office at the annual meeting which is held in April.

Because this year we have two directorships open and two candidates for them, they will be elected “by acclamation.” That means by a voice vote, without ballots being cast.

At the March meeting Dave Eungard will be elected, and Jane Ann Miller will be re-elected, by acclamation.

As required by Chapter 723 of the Florida statutes, sometime after the March meeting the “new board” will meet to elect four of themselves to the offices of president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer for the coming fiscal year beginning May first.

Please take a moment to congratulate both Dave and Jane Ann and thank them for their willingness to serve on the board of directors.

2020 PHONE BOOKSCarol Gilchrist – 941-485-7043

Most of you know by now….that they have been printed thanks to Community Media at no charge to Bay Lake and are available at the office, if you have not yet picked up your copy. I was indeed blessed when Steve Limkemann volunteered to help me.

On January 3, packets were delivered to the walkers who began to contact every resident to verify and obtain the necessary information. These people are to be commended for a great job. Diane Steare, Carla Hannay, Jerry Loveless, Len Clark, Judy Gerarge, MaryDeClaire, Jane Hodson,Laura Connor, Liz Breadstill, Carol Gilchrist, and Ginny Caspar.

Next, volunteers proofed the print outs vs. the original survey sheets. Every step along the way had Steve busy at his computer. The proof reader teams were Ruth Roof, Carol Gilchrist, Helen Stephens, Connie Conley, Ann Speicher, Ginger Trent, Marian Brooks, Sharon Brewer, Ginny Babbitt, Kathy Clark, and Louise Lacasse.

By January 30th, the new phone books were in the office.

Gratitude goes out to these volunteers, the very cooperative residents and to Steve Limkemann whose fingers were at the service of a keen and technical computer mind….and a deep dedication to the success of this project. Thank you ALL!

TRIVIA WITH ANDY & DONNA Andy & Donna Takach – 941-306-6742

Andy & Donna Takach will be hosting this year’s second Trivia Night on the second Saturday in March – the 14th – at 7:00 p.m.

Everyone who participated in the January Trivia Night had a rollicking good time. The crowd wasn’t huge – apparently the unexpected snow kept many Bay Lakers bundled up and hunkered down in their homes?? – but March’s turnout is likely to be much bigger now that the word has gotten out about what a fantastic event Andy puts on.

You can form your own team ahead of time if you wish – up to six players. January’s winning team consisted of folks who just showed up and all plopped down at the same table!

The entry fee is just $2 per person. All the entry fees are paid out in prize money, but the size of the payouts depends on how many competitors show up. Bring whatever beverages and snacks strike your fancy.

HELP HEAL VETERANSJesus Febres – 941-445-4630

Veterans are invited to come to the Clubhouse every 2nd, 3rd and 4th Tuesday each month from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Please bring your VA card with you to receive two free activity kits.

SOCIAL SECURITY SCAMS Forget about phone calls from fake “Microsoft Tech Support” claiming you have a virus and need to pay them hundreds of dollars to clean things up or your computer is going to melt.

Scammers are now pretending to be government employees.

They will try to scare and trick you into giving them your personal information and money. They may threaten you or your family and may demand immediate payment to avoid arrest or other legal action.

Don’t be fooled! If you receive a suspicious call:• Hang up!• DO NOT give them money or personal

information!• Report the scam at OIG.SSA.GOV as soon

as possible!

Social Security may call you in some situations but will never• Threaten you• Suspend your Social Security Number• Demand immediate payment from you• Require payment by cash, gift card, pre-

paid debit card, or wire transfer• Ask for gift card numbers over the phone or

to wire or mail cash

What to look out for…• The call or email says there is a problem

with your Social Security Number or account.

• Someone asking you to pay a fine or debt with retail gift cards, wire transfers, pre-paid debit cards, internet currency, or by mailing cash.

• Scammers pretend they’re from Social

Security or another government agency. Caller ID or documents sent by email may look official but they are not.

• Callers threaten you with arrest or other legal action.

HERE COMES VEGAS! Andy & Donna Takach – 941-306-6742

Ken “Mr. Frank Sinatra” Bertch strolled up to the microphone at last month’s karaoke event at the

clubhouse. When he opened his mouth and began to sing it was like ol’ Blue Eyes himself had returned from

his grave to entertain us for a few minutes.

Then inspiration struck. We knew at once that we had to organize a “Vegas Comes to Bay Lake” night to showcase Ken and whatever other gifted residents might be lurking in the background, waiting for an opportunity to enthrall us with their God-given talents.

The plans for Vegas Night are still being finalized, but here are the basic details.

• Saturday, March 21st • Potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m.• Entertainment begins at 7 o’clock

Entertainers who have committed to performing include Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Phyllis Diller, and Elvis. At newsletter press time Sonny & Cher were just about ready to commit, and several others were yet to be contacted.

To reserve your seats please sign up in the clubhouse, and indicate who will be attending and what dish(es) you plan to bring for the potluck.

ROMEOSPeter Morrissey – 941-488-7284

Romeos meet for breakfast every other Monday morning. The sign up sheet is in the clubhouse listing the date, time and destination.

STAR DEADLINE: OCTOBER 1, 2020 Steve Rollison – 941-375-8110

You still have some time left, but October 1, 2020 is not a deadline you want to miss. If you don’t have a star at the top of your driver’s license you will not be getting on an airplane unless you have a valid, current passport or similar document in your hand.

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act turned into law the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the federal government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. It prohibits TSA and other federal agencies from accepting licenses and identification cards that do not meet these standards for official purposes – such as getting through the airport security checkpoint to board a plane.

Let’s say you’re a snowbird and next year you drive to Nokomis in October and then go to the airport in mid-December to jump on a plane back north to spend Christmas with the kids and grandkids.

Without a REAL ID you won’t be getting on any plane.

Note: The TSA website points out that legacy Ohio driver’s licenses have a gold star marking on the card, however REAL ID compliant Ohio driver’s licenses have a black cut-out star. If you are not sure whether your card is compliant, contact the Ohio driver’s license issuing agency.

BLE HAS AN INVESTMENT CLUB? Steve Rollison – 941-375-8110

Bay Lake has an investment club? Yes, we do. And every month we learn a little more about investing. We review our group’s portfolio of stocks and decide which stocks (if any) to sell and what new stocks to buy. Most importantly we have a good time as we learn from one another.

Does that sound like something you might be interested in?

If it does, than please join us at a meeting or two to see first-hand what it’s like. We get together from 3:00 to 5:00 o’clock on the second Thursday of each month. (That means March 12th and then April 9th.)

READY TO GO BACK TO SKOOL? Steve Rollison – [email protected]

How recently have you said to yourself – or maybe even said out loud – “I swear… my brain seems to be turning to mush!”

Well, maybe it is getting somewhat out of shape. The effects of aging aside, if you don’t exercise your body it will gradually but continuously become weak and stop working as well as it used to work.

I’ve read that the same is true of your brain. Stop exercising it and before long it stops working as well as it used to work.

So how do you exercise your brain? By learning something new.

I’m not necessarily talking about academic subjects like trigonometry, biology, or physics. Just-for-joy educational topics like learning a second language (Spanish anyone?), or art appreciation, or understanding how weather works, would flex your mental muscles just as well.

Learning a new skill exercises your brain, too. Still life painting, playing piano or guitar, or portrait photography.

Does any of that sound incredibly appealing? Well, maybe we could undertake a short brain exercise journey together. Without ever leaving the confines of Bay Lake.

I subscribe to The Great Courses. Maybe you’ve heard of them. The organization offers “classes” on hundreds of topics, all delivered by CD or website access. And all taught by experts who also happen to be exceptional teachers.

And all the classes are delivered in short, half-hour long lessons.

Is there something you would really like to learn to do, or some topic you would really like to learn about? If we can find a few Bay Lakers interested in the same thing, maybe we could all get together once or twice a week (for a half hour each time), and as a group experience a little joy while at the same time exercising our brains!

If that sounds appealing, go to www.TheGreatCoursesPlus.com and click on the Explore Courses link. Look around, jot down the names of any courses you’d be willing to commit to trying out, and send me your list.

If I can find one or two others with an overlapping interest we’ll see if we can all find a time schedule that works and give it a shot.

THE PERFECT HEALTHY SNACKMichael Kloian – 912-547-2416

When we were kids our mom made us peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (with Welch’s grape jelly, if I recall) for lunch more often than not. It was either that or bologna. Until recently, I have not had peanut butter in a very long time (mucho years). However, when company came and went this past November, they left behind a jar of Jiffy Peanut Butter. One evening I was craving a snack and low and behold I reached in the cupboard for the jar of Jiffy and using a butter knife I began to chow down on peanut butter-no bread. To top it off I also grabbed my squeeze jar of Honey and enjoyed several squirts of the sweet stuff. What a great combination. Now, whenever I crave a snack it is peanut butter with a squirt or two of honey.

• 6 Health Benefits of Peanut Butter• High in Valuable Nutrition– Peanut butter

has potassium as well as protein, which lowers the risk of high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease.

• High in Fiber – It also contains fiber for your bowel health, healthy fats, magnesium to fortify your bones and muscles, Vitamin E and antioxidants.

• Energy Booster – Peanut butter contains good amounts of healthy fats and protein which means it contains plenty of calories that will give energy.

This newsletter that you are reading right now is one of the tools we use to inform you about Bay Lake news, announcements, events and activities. But since it’s printed just once a month, what you see is sometimes pretty dated.

If you want to stay on top of things, and you receive e-mail, we’ve got you covered there, too, with our Event Alerts. They’re short blast e-mails that get sent out whenever there’s anything newsworthy to report – generally, that’s a few times each month.

Subscribing (or unsubscribing) couldn’t be easier. Just send me a very brief e-mail, including your name, and I’ll take care of all the details.

NOTES FROM THE EDITORDonna Pfeiffer – [email protected]

Do you have candid photos from any of the BLE events to print in the newsletter? I haven’t seen any in a while and I am pretty sure someone must be snapping a photo here and there with their smart phone. If you have any photos you are willing to share, please email them to me so we can print them in the newsletter.

Newsletter Deadline: 12th of the previous monthAll articles and information must be received by the 12th of each month to be included in the newsletter for the following month. You are encouraged to submit articles and photos of upcoming or past BLE events. Or simply articles you deem note worthy for our community. HAPPY NEW YEAR! HERE IS THE LATEST FROM XFINITY

DAZN APP ADDED TO X1

We are currently rolling out the DAZN app to Xfinity Internet customers with Xfinity X1 service. DAZN (pronounced “da-zone”) is an over-the-top (OTT) subscription service where you can play, pause and rewind over 8,000 live and On Demand sporting events every year, including 70+ exclusive fight nights.

To access the DAZN app, customers can press the xfinity button on their remote and navigate to Apps > DAZN.

AMBIENT MOODS APP ADDED TO THE X1

Xfinity X1 and Xfinity Flex customers with an eligible TV Box (excludes RNG150 devices) and Xfinity Internet service can now access Ambient Moods, a new app that combines beautiful photos with music to help set the ambiance inside a customer’s home.

To access Ambient Moods, customers can use their remote to go to Apps > Ambient Moods and select the desired genre or mood. Once selected, music will begin to play from the TV Box and accompanying images will appear on-screen.

Digital Options for Channel Lineups

As of December 2019 Xfinity will no longer be printing channel lineups. But don’t worry it’s easy to find your channels. Below are your options to get your lineup where you live:

Option 1 Visit xfinity.com/channellineup. Enter zip code or login.

Option 2 Download Xfinity My Account on your mobile device. Select TV > View Channel Lineup.

Option 3 Visit xfinity.com/stream or download the Xfinity Stream app on your mobile device. Select Live TV > All Channels.

Option 4 Use the Voice Command on the X1 Remote to search any channel and access your TV listings.

If you don’t have the My Account App get the latest version for up to date features and security enhancements:

• Apple devices from iTunes • Android devices from Google Play
