R.G.S Newcastle Win Thrilling Tait 10s Competition

On Sunday, Barnard Castle School hosted the annual Tait 10s championship. This 10 aside Year 7 competition has beenplayed for 12 years and in that time only four teams have lifted the trophy - RGS Newcastle, Woodhouse Grove, BradfordGrammar school and QEGS Wakefield.

Last year Barney won the plate competition, contested by the runners up of each group. They put up an incrediblyimpressive display throughout the group games, coming back from a try down in both their games to beat strongSedbergh and Durham sides to win their group. Centre Harry Rickard scored a try after a strong run through the Durhamdefence and winger Oliver Harwood’s speed allowed him to finish an impressive move against Sedbergh. From the other three groups, RGS Newcastle, Aysgarth and QEGS Wakefield progressed into the top competition. LikeBarney, these teams were also unbeaten in their respective groups. QEGS looked particularly strong in a 25-0 victoryover Giggleswick, as did Aysgarth, running in four tries against Hymers without conceding. RGS came away with two 15-0victories from their group games. These four teams then went head to head in another round robin format. The plate waswon by Hymers. Newcastle School for Boys won the shield.

The main excitement took place in the cup competition. Barney put up strong performances in all of their games and wereunlucky to not win a game against three high quality sides. The first game of the top group was between QEGS andBarney. For much of the match this was a very close game. However, QEGS eventually broke through the Barneydefence and won 15-0 after a strong second half display. In the other gme, RGS and Aysgarth drew 5-5 in a closelycontested match.

Round two of matches was again a round of close encounters. Barnard Castle were unlucky to lose 25-0 to RGS and thescore line didn’t reflect how close the match actually was. Meanwhile, Aysgarth and QEGS exchanged blows in a physicaland high quality encounter and the end result was a 5-5 draw.Going into the final game of the competition, either one of QEGS, RGS or Aysgarth could win the title. If either QEGS orRGS beat one another, that team would win, but if it was a draw, Aysgarth could potentially win if they scored enough triesagainst Barnard Castle. Aysgarth did in fact beat Barney 25-0. The match between RGS and QEGS was the match of theday. Although it was not full of tries, the rugby on show was of the highest quality and either team could have won it in theend. The end result, however, was a 10-10 draw with RGS taking the lead twice only for QEGS to instantly respond, onetime even from the kick off after the second RGS try. This result meant Aysgarth, QEGS and RGS could not be separatedon 7 points. Not even points difference could separate the three. This meant they had to go on tries scored throughout thefinal competition and it was in fact RGS. Aysgarth score 7 and QEGS 6.

It was a fitting end to an excellent day of rugby. Although it rained for most of the day, the sun did finally come out for thefinal round of matches. A huge thank you must go to Mr Toyne for making sure the maths was correct when thecompetition was so close, the Barney friends for supplying much needed bacon sandwiches and hot drinks and MrMonument for arranging the competition. Performance in a TightEncounter

Saturday Sedbergh fixtures are often thegames you look for when you get the schoolcalendar at the start of term. In terms of thechallenge they possess, you desperately wantto get a win against them from 1st team levelright down to the U12 B team.Sadly, on Saturday this was not the case.Although no rugby team managed to win, thisdoes not suggest Sedbergh are as dominantas they are. The 1st team in particular wereunlucky in their home game. Despite being 22-0 down at half time, the team never gave in andin the second half, the team were arguably thebetter of the two sides. Some sides would crumble at this point but theway the 1st team stuck to their task wasadmirable. They successfully pushed backwave after wave of brown shirts and there weretry saving tackles form full back Tom Hall andscrum half Max Pepper (Year 11). Inevitably, this had an effect as the game wore on anddespite conceding a further 2 tries, Barneyseized their moment of glory when JamieAdamson battered his way through the tacklesto score his second try in as many games. Thefinal score of 7-36 definitely did flatterSedburgh. The team also bounced back fromthis result with a 14-13 victory over DurhamSchool on Wednesday.
