PRELIMINARY EGOTISM. J 208944It seems to be the conventional and approved method oi

procedure, when one has written a book, to write a preface, eitherby way of apology for having written it, or as a raison d'etre forthe book itself. I confess that I know of no particular excusewhich might serve as a palliation for what I have done, or leftundone, and the book must show its own reason for existence.

I expect it will meet with adverse criticism, both deservedand undeserved, for no once can appreciate more fully thanmyself how much there is in itand out of itto furnish afair mark for the critic. It is a truism that, "when a manmakes a feast he more certainly invites his critics than hisfriends."So far as I am cognizant, I am the pioneer in this field ofresearchthe first to blaze a pathway along the hitherto unex-plored lines of the subject-matter of this work; and no one, whohas never undertaken a similar task, can appreciate the magni-tude of the labor involved in collecting and compiling the mattercontained in even so brief a volume as the one which follows.

I shall esteem it a personal favor if my readers will supplyme with any information in their possession, relating to the sub-ject of the work, which may have escaped my research; or cor-rect any inaccuracies which may appear in the work itself; and, some time, perhaps, Deo volente, I may issue a "second revisededition, greatly enlarged and improved,"' as the prospectuses say.

In conclusion, I venture to express the hope that my littlebook may fall into the hands of indulgent friends rather than ofcaptious critics; and so, without further explanation or apology,I place it before you. The Editor.

THE NAME AND RACE.Years ago I was treated to an explanation of the genesis of

the race and patronymic of the Barkers by a gentlemanhim-self a member of the familywho, calling upon me in the pur-suit of knowledge anent the subject of our ancestry, in thecourse of our conversation, regaled me with the followinganecdote

Many years ago, long before the era of railroads, steam-boats, telegraphs or trolleys; before Washington had immor-talized himself by telling the truth, or Columbus had venturedhis frail caravels upon an unknown sea; before the Wars of theKoses had plunged a nation into fratracidal strife, or MagnaCharter had been wrung from the reluctant hand of a tyrantking, a gentleman of ancient and aristocratic lineage, whosepatrimony extended over one of the fairest portions of England, was aroused one night from his slumbers by the violent barkingof his dogs. Objurgations addressed to the canine race in gen-eral and his own yelping pack in particular, proving ineffectualto quell the pow-wow, and the sedative and nocturnal boot-jackproving powerless to induce them to retire to their kennel andmeditate in solitude and silence upon the theory of a man inthe moon, he sent his servant to ascertain the cause of the dis-turbance. The menial soon returned, bearing in his hands abasket, in which peacefully reposeda babe, the unconsciousobject of the dogs' aversion. Struck with the beauty of the child, and moved to pity at the sight of its helpless innocence, thenoblemanhaving no children of his owndecided to adoptthe little waif, which he immediately did; and, in memory ofthe canine racket which had first brought it to his attention,he named it "Barker."

I give the foregoing story without in any manner avouch-

ing its historical accuracy. If the reader chooses to accept itas truth, he must do so upon his own responsibility. As a judi-cial historian and veracious chronicler I must confess that I amtempted to relegate it to the company of George Washington'slittle hatchet, and Jack and the Bean Stalk, and all the othermyths and legends which used to delight our childhood hours, before the skepticism of maturer years had stolen upon us, likea thief in the night, to ravish away our holiest and most cher-ished beliefs.A more probableif less romanticexplanation of the ori-gin of the name is to be found in the custom which obtainedcenturies ago in most of the nations which to-day are called"civilized," of men taking their names from the nature of theirvocations, the locality of their habitations, historical events,or incidents of a personal nature. "Barker," in the early Eng-lish vernacular, signified a tanner, and it was, doubtless, thishonest, if odoriferous, occupation, which furnished a name toour ancestors of blessed memory. A character in one of Beau-mont and Fletcher's comedies, in reply to a query from his Lord,as to his calling, replies:

"I am a barker, sir, by trade."Both the name and the race are English, and have been

since a time when the memory of man runneth not to the con-trary ; and a baronetcy, which had lapsed, through want of heirs, awaits the enterprising young American Barker who can prove,as well as read, "his title clear."

I have often heard expression given to the sentimentthoughtlessly, of coursethat "all the Barkers must be related toeach other;" and that a common ancestor would be found by"going back far enough." A moment's reflection will serve toshow the fallacy of this ideaunless, indeed, we choose to goback to the common ancestor of mankindfor tanners orbarkers, in different parts of the country, would adopt the nameof their vocation without reference to others in the same trade;and consanguinity could no more be predicated upon the similar-ity of name than upon the similarity of occupation.

Shortly beforehis death he took a passive part in the rescue of "Jerry," a fugu-tive slave, from the United States authorities, who held himunder the provisions of the infamous Fugitive Slave Law. Therecord of this rescue forms the most thrilling chapter in the localhistory of Syracuse. It was conceived and carried out by the"first citizens" of the city, and their descendants to this day referwith pride to the participation of their fathers in this lawless (?)

He was considered one ofthe most sagacious, as he was one of the most successful businessmen in the city. Xo man engaged in the salt industry at Syra-cuse ever had a larger experience in its manufacture than he.He was considered an authority with reference to it; and onvarious occasions was called before committees of the Legislatureand of Congress to give expert testimony relating to it.BARKER, CEPHAS CICERO, son of William and Phebe(Rose) Barker, born Onondaga, X. Of an affectionate nature and generous to a fault, "AuntDate," as she was always known, enjoyed the friendship andesteem of all whose privilege it was to know her. Strickenwith blindness in the closing years of her life, and afflicted witha painful and incurable malady, she yet bore her afflictions withheroic fortitude to the end. She died at Syracuse, X. Y., April18, 1882. In this connection it may not be out of place to repro-duce from the "Syracuse Evening Journal," of April 20, 1882,the following poem, which was the spontaneous tribute of affec-tion of a lady of the neighborhood in which she lived:

"AUNT DATE."Did you know her, did you love her ?A strong soul for any fateSuch a warm and steadfast loverOf her friends, was dear Aunt Date.

Hear the little children whisper'Mid the quiet tears they shed: .

"Oh, mamma dear, did you know it;Did vou know Aunt Date was dead?"

All these weary months of sufferingThey have asked so tenderly

Of her closest, nearest, dearest"Will you tell me, how is she?"

Better, dear ones, ever better,In the world to which she fled,

Where her loved ones are not dying,Where no tears will e'er be shed.

Busy hands enforced to quiet,Loving heart, its care laid down

Miss thee, yea, but Heaven's fiatBade thee come and take thy crown.

Ministers of loving kindness.Sweet home service deftly wrought,

E'en when stricken down with blindnessYet she strove with tender thought.

Wise to bear life's heavy crosses,Patient all the way to tread.

Ye who all the road went with her,Dare ye grieve that she is dead?

Give her lips a last caressing,The dear hands that lack their skillThank God for her life of blessingAnd her memory with ye still.

Miss Rachel H. Barker, who died April 18, 1882, wasalmost universally known in our neighborhood as "Aunt Date,"and as universally respected and loved. These lines are theaffectionate tribute of an old friend. A. C. M.
