Let’s Laugh: Will spider get his revenge?BY CAROLINE REIDCommunity contributor

t my house, spiders are not awelcome sight. I have the “bugman” out quarterly to shoothem all away. He shooedthem all the last time except

one lousy critter that said “good morn-ing” to me the other day.

Sitting at the PC working away, I sawa black spot moving on the windowsill.Thinking it might have been one ofthose “floaters” that we all get in oureyes once in a while, I ignored it. Itmoved again and it had legs. Floatersdon’t have legs. Or eyes. This thing hadeyes, legs and a white spot on its rearend. Floaters don’t have a rear end.

My bug spray supply was totallydepleted from a gigantic daddy longlegs I obliterated in the garage a coupleof weeks ago. All I could get my handson for this spider attack was mosquitorepellent and a spray bottle of kitchendisinfectant.

Armed with the mosquito repellent I

attacked that wicked looking spideruntil every ounce was gone. He stillstaggered around my windowsill so Idrowned him with kitchen disinfectant.I couldn’t be sure that did the trick

because he retreated under a lock Ihave on my window and did not comeout! I got as close as I thought was safeand decided he must have croaked. Now I’m afraid to open the window, for

fear he is still lurking there, just wait-ing for me to see if he’s dead. He’lljump out, attack me and my days willbe numbered. I know that’s what he’sthinking!

I looked in the windowsill the otherday and didn’t see a sign of him. I stillhaven’t touched the window lock! How-ever, and let this be a warning to you —the combo of mosquito repellent andkitchen disinfectant takes paint off! Icould not believe my eyes. The paint onmy windowsill is still peeling.

My daughter, who doesn’t have anycritter phobias, told me I should havegrabbed a paper towel, wrapped him upand put him back in the garden wherehe belongs. Ewwwwww, no way! Shewent on to say that I might have betterserved nature by putting him back inhis natural habitat. She’s a biologist! She looks for endangered lizards in thedesert. How did I raise a biologist?

Now I feel guilty! What if I’ve upsetthe balance of nature? I won’t worryabout it for too long, but I will worry. It’s just something I do.

AIf you’ve gotarachnophobiatendencies likeour own CarolineReid, you mightnot appreciatethis sculpture ofa giant spider,Maman 1999,outside the TateModern Museumin London.

The Fourth of July has been a long-standing favorite holiday in our fami-ly. Traditionally it’s been filled withfamily, food, fireworks, and fun.Colton, 2, is our oldest son and will becelebrating the Fourth for the thirdyear now. He is, hands-down, themost excited one in our family thisyear! We’ve been shopping in prepa-ration for the big day. Among food, decorations, and outdoor games thatwe’ve got for the celebration, weadded some wardrobe to the mix thisyear. This is a picture of Colton mod-eling some of his Fourth of July flarebefore the fun begins! Doesn’t he justmake you want to celebrate already? He’s an American 2-year-old who iscertainly proud to wear his red, white, and blue.

This is Jake, our “BoogieWoogie Beagle Boy.” Wehave two therapy dogs, andthis year, we celebratedthe Fourth of July bydressing up our two littlespecial friends and takingthem to visit the residentsat Rosewood Health Cen-ter.

The dogs were happy tospread some Fourth ofJuly spirit and they got lotsof smiles and “ahhhhhhs”for their special Fourth ofJuly attire. It was a funthing to do — so much, weare planning to do thesame thing next year. Itmade our Fourth very spe-cial this year.

Every year, our family packsup the trailers and heads toPismo Beach for a week ofcamping for the Fourth of July. The last few years we havestarted a new tradition of hav-ing a bike parade around thecampground. The young andthe young at heart decoratetheir bikes in red, white & blueand then we wind our waythrough the entire campgroundmaking as much noise as possi-ble and wishing everyone ahappy Fourth of July! All the

campers love to watch us go by& send us a friendly wave orsmile. After the parade, wehead back to our campsites, where we barbecue hamburg-ers and hot dogs. After dinner,we pack up our lawn chairs andhike down to the beach and waitfor the sun to go down. The kidsalways play a friendly game offootball in the sand, and oncenightfall arrives, the fireworksbegin! Our family is blessed tohave so many special occasionswhen we all come together andenjoy being a true all-Americanfamily.

Bike parade ‘pedals’ patriotism

BY STACY COXCommunity contributor

My husband and I feel that one of our greatestchallenges as parents is to raise our children tobe honorable and respectful adults. Adopting apath of patriotism is a good reinforcement forthem to show honor and a good sense of ethics. It is our job to instill a sense of honor and patri-otism in their young hearts, offering them theopportunity to love and honor their country andits flag. In doing so, their actions will be seen asa good example for their country to showmankind and the world. Setting good examplesof patriotism should, in turn, teach our kids thatevery person counts, no matter where they live,or who they might be.

Paw Print City: Timeto join social Web

m one of the later arrivals toFacebook, which is probably agood thing as I’ve quicklybecome all but addicted tospending time on the site. I

have a ball typing nonsense with someof my friends, I take enough quizzes tohave covered nearly every aspect of mybeing and I love reading the updatesfrom groups I’ve joined or people andcauses I’m interested in. Except for onehuge hole.

I’m not a fan of any of our local ani-mal-related organizations. Not one.Why not? Because none of them appearon Facebook.

Far be it from me to declare the stateof nonprofits in the digital age, but seri-ously, local groups have got to get off

the fence andget involvedwith socialn e t w o r k i n gsites like Face-book and Twit-ter. A quickperusal of Websites of localanimal organi-zations showthat manyhave not beenupdated insome time, likethe Bakers-field SPCA’s

link to photos of their annual Book Sale— their 2007 Book Sale, that is. Anotherlocal organization doesn’t include anemail address for interested people toask questions, and one local group hasno Web site at all.

In this day and age, when more andmore people are using the Internet toexplore and connect, not being involvedin some of the most widely used sites ishurting you. Local groups need to stayconnected with their audience, and thataudience is online. Facebook providesan excellent opportunity to reach out, share stories of rescue and adoptionand highlight events to people whowant to know about them.

Social networking sites can provideaccess to volunteers, a new avenue togenerate support for your programsand a great way to share your organiza-tion’s mission and goals — but only ifyou participate. It’s time to move yourgroup into the 21st century. Not surehow it all works? Ask one of youryounger volunteers to give you a quicktour and you’ll find it’s easier than youthink. Heck, I’ll give you a tour if youneed one.

When you get your group activated, look me up. I’ll be pleased to “friend”you.

Memories ofMorro BayFROM: DOUG’S BLOG

lmost every year we have traveled to Mor-ro Bay to see the fireworks on the Fourthof July. This year we made our reserva-tions early to ensure a space to stay afterthe grand display.

Well, things did not quite work out the way wehad planned.

Morro Bay City Council cancelled the fireworksin favor of a laser light show at the park. They citedecological considerations for the health of the bayand financial strains as the reasons for the change.

We did not want to go down to the park, findparking, walk to the park and watch an electroniclight show. My last light show was accompanied bythe Strawberry Alarm Clock in 1967. I didn’t needthis.

So we just wandered over to the pier across fromour room and waited for the sun to set so that Icould maybe get a decent sunset shot.

This picture is what I got.Better than any man-made light show any day.

Even though Morro Bay cancelled its annual fireworks show, there was still beauty to be found in the sky.
