Hi! My name is Bindy and I am a one to two year old, female, brown Labrador Retriever mix. I will be spayed before I can go home with my new family. I am very sweet, affectionate, playful, and I would do best in a home with older children as I love to play, but it can be a little rough at times. Don’t forget to mention my ID number - 774308!

There’s something all but magical thathappens when a dog “gets it,” no matterwhat the “it” might be.

Recently we gained the use of a swim-ming pool. Darby has seen pools on manyoccasions, but has never been up closeand personal with one that’s in use. Otherthan trying to avoid falling in, he hadn’tfound any real benefit to the giant puddlein the ground.

The first couple of times we went swim-ming, Darby would wander around thepool, head slightly tilted. While I doubt hewas pondering our fitness as pet parents,he seemed decidedly confused about whyin the world people would choose to climbinto such a puddle and seem happy aboutdoing so.

After nearly daily visits to the pool, somewhere near the one-week markDarby was pacing around the edge, fol-lowing us as we wandered our way fromone end to the other. The summer’s 100-plus degree days made the concretearound the pool far from comfortable, so

we began splash-ing some waterover the edge ofthe pool to tryand get theground to some-thing slightlybelow foot-siz-zling.

Darby, seeingwater fly throughthe air, albeit allof six inches offthe ground, whipped aroundlike a shot. He

has always been singularly crazy aboutwater that comes from a hose or a sprin-kler head — so crazy that if you actuallywant to get some watering done in any-thing approaching a timely manner it’sbest to leave him inside. He scurried tothe edge of the pool and hunched there sointensely you’d have thought we weredangling steaks from the end of our fin-

gers. Darby was quickly rewarded withanother splash and a chorus of “yeas” and“go Darby” as he raced around trying tocatch the water coming at him from dif-ferent angles.

In that moment, it was obvious he “gotit” — “it”, in this case, being the fun thatcan be had poolside. If you’re attentive toyour dog, whether they’re learning toshake hands, lie down on command, or thefiner points of chasing splashing water, you can almost see the switch flip onbehind their eyes when they’ve figuredout what you want, and why it’s good forthem to give it to you. Dogs live for thosemoments, and dog owners should, too. They represent the coming together oftwo different species, with two differentcommunication styles, into a single,agreed-upon understanding that benefitsboth parties. What could be better?

Educator of the Month

I’d like to nominate my twin daughters’ kindergarten teacher Mr. Rhodes who teaches at Discovery Elementary School. At the beginning of the year, I was so skeptical after having learned that they were going to have a male teacher for kindergarten. He has superseded all of my expectations as to what a great kindergarten teacher should be. My girls love Mr. Rhodes. He teaches them lots of cute and silly songs. He builds up their self-esteem. He is just so marvelous with my girls!

To submit your nominee for Educator of the Month, go to: www.northwest voice.com then click on “Post Something!” and contribute a

paragraph about why you appreciate and would like to recognize your nominee. Be sure to include the educator’s name, school, department and picture. The contest is open to

educators in the Southwest area. Entries can also be e-mailed to: [email protected]. Each month the winning entry $50 gift certificate,

compliments of GW School Supply and The Northwest Voice.

Summertime fun at ‘Camp Grandma’ BY TERESA MCFARLAND, AKA “GMAT”Community contributor

What do you get when you mix a backyard covered in Bakersfield dirt,a slide and a swing set, five crazy cousins and add a water hose?

Marvelous MUD! The kick-off event of “Camp Grandma” was a mudpuddle for a mud-pie maker’s paradise — which included painting eachother with the slippery slime!

Five of my grandchildren — ages 3 to 9 — enjoyed four days togetherwith lots of fun activities. Besides making mud castles — complete withmud moats — we visited Murray Family Farms, Dr. Mike McMahan’sDental office, Dewar’s Ice Cream on California Avenue, Jastro SprayPark, Tanglewood Farms Miniature Horse Ranch, Pioneer Village at theKern County Museum and the McMurtrey Aquatics Center.

When we weren’t gallivanting all over town, we had s’mores to make, plenty of swinging to do, chickens to feed (and catch), crafts to paint, sto-ries to read, songs to sing, Bible verses to learn, and time enough to writeand draw all about it as well.

The Grand Finale was a luau to celebrate GmaT’s birthday. The well-rested and grateful parents came to collect their happy, although some-what dirty, children and took them home.

Whew! What a week! Now I need a massage, a mani and pedi — and aNAP!
