bids is 30th June 2010 and SBH have already received bids from communities keen to benefit, so be quick! If you would like to know more about how to bid for improvements to your local area and the criteria please contact Robbie McCormack on 0845 505 5500 or visit www.sedgefieldboroughhomes.co.uk for further information.
CAN YOU HELP CDFHS?County Durham Furniture Help Scheme, based in Chilton is looking for someone with bricklaying qualifications and a few spare hours to help them out with their latest project. If you are retired or not working, maybe you could be the person to help this worthy cause. The CDFHS was set up 40 years ago in 1970 by Chris Palmer, who at the time was declared unfit to work and was told that he only had about 6 months to live. 40 years on, Chris is still in charge and the furniture scheme is still expanding. The registered charity is based at Units 12 & 20, Avenue 3, Chilton Industrial Estate Chilton Tel. No. 01388 721509. The company helps anyone who is in receipt of benefits, or on low income, or for whatever reason is in need of furniture and household goods and cannot afford to buy new items. Their typical customer is a family who may have lost everything and have been given the keys to an empty house. CDFHS try to make that house into a home. In 2009 they helped over 15,000 families who had fallen on hard times and needed a hand up, not a hand out.A while ago, CDFHS had planned to buy the Southerne Social Club at Newton Aycliffe but the scheme fell through, so they have now acquired Unit 18, next to their other two units.Unit 18, acquired in November 2009, will be the new Learning and Training Centre. It will give people a chance to improve their employability prospects by identifying, learning and embedding new skills, backed up by on-site mentoring in effective CV writing, job search campaign and support, telephone and interview coaching.Steve Mitton is the new Training & Employment Co-ordinator. Steve had been in business, sales and marketing for over 30 years, when he was made redundant in 2008. He found it difficult to find employment possibly through
his age, so in February 2009 he offered to become a volunteer. When he started, he was doing only 2 hours per week. Now he is working 6 -7 days per week for CDFHS. His vast expertise will benefit everyone seeking help to gain employment. He will be there offering his services to each day. However, before all this can happen, the company have to construct purpose built rooms in Unit 18. They
have the labour to carry out these alterations, but they need a qualified bricklayer to supervise the construction and to help them out with the required plumbing, electric and gas pipes in accordance with current legislation. The job unfortunately does not pay any wages, but job satisfaction will be enormous, as you will be helping people who are far less fortunate than yourself. (continued on page 3)
Chris Palmer (left) and Steve Mitton (right) hope to bring new employability services to the local area.

Glowing tributes have been paid to a local performer who used his talent to support charities.Colin Scaife, aged 49, died on Friday 18th May after collapsing in the garden at his home in West Cornforth. An active member of the
Ferryhill Operatic Society for 19 years and a founder member of The New Yorkers group, Colin loved performing and those who were close to him said that he was especially passionate when his shows would benefit the charities that were close to his heart.
ASSAULT TRIAL SETTerence John Jones, of Barratt Way, West Cornforth will return for trial before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe on 3rd September. The 18 year old faces a joint charge, along
with two other youths, who cannot be named, that on 27th November he assaulted Andrew Allen in West Cornforth. The three defendants were released on unconditional bail.

NO PLEA ENTERED
Adam Nobbs faced a charge that on 6th February he entered part of a dwelling in Chestnut Road, Sedgefield as a trespasser. The 18 year old, from Woodstock Terrace in Bishop Middleham, is alleged to have gained access to the integral garage, which was unlocked, via a secure back garden. The occupants were in bed at the time and were disturbed by the intruder. The owner of the property went to the garage and there confronted
Nobbs, who was under the influence of alcohol, before forcing him outside to the front garden. Nobbs entered no plea to the charge and was released on bail, conditions of which state that he must not interfere with witnesses, nor is he to enter Chestnut Road, Hawthorn Road or Oak Tree Crescent in Sedgefield. The defendant will return to Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on 21st July for the case to be committed to Crown Court.
CHILTON LIBRARYChilton library has two new adult displays. The first is a non-fiction collection of books of famous people from films and TV. This range extends from Paul O’Grady to Helen
Mirren biography stories. The adult fiction display is called ‘Regency Romance’ which includes authors such as Amanda Quick, Julia Quinn and Stephanie Laurens. In
the junior library to link with our half- term craft there is a lovely ‘Mini Beasts’ display to encourage all our junior borrowers to investigate their world around them.
A BIG THANk YOU TO EvERYONE!
The small band of Ladies from St Luke’s Church who held a Tombola Stall on Friday 21st May in Ferryhill Market would like to say a big thank you to
everyone who tried their luck on the stall. They would particularly like to thank the stall holders for their generosity.
ECO LORRIESSeventeen new ‘green’ refuse collection vehicles are helping Durham County Council cut its greenhouse gas emissions.A unique bin lift on the vehicles reduces fuel consumption by three and a half litres of diesel per vehicle a day, amounting to a 42 per cent reduction each year. The lift has built in intelligence allowing it to deliver only as much hydraulic power needed to lift the load ensuring that energy and fuel is not wasted.“This means that the fleet of 17 vehicles will reduce our carbon emissions by a fantastic 37,400 tonnes a year,” said Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships.
“What’s more, the bin lift doesn’t require the vehicle engine to work harder when it’s operating which adds up to a quicker, more fuel efficient system.
“This vehicle makes for an effective, efficient, quieter and reduced emission collection fleet. That is a benefit not just for us but for householders and the environment,” he said.
Employees of Durham County Council’s Green Waste team operate the new eco-friendly refuse collection vehicle.
FINAL CALL FOR TOP ATTENDEES
A final call is going out to find County Durham pupils who are on the ball when it comes to attending school. So far 16 County Durham pupils are on course to achieve an outstanding 100 per cent school attendance record during throughout their primary or secondary education. Now Durham County Council is putting out a final call to see if there are any more pupils in their final year of primary or secondary school with a 100 per cent record to invite them to take part in a special celebration.Over the last nine years, the
County Council has presented awards to Year 11 students who have not missed even half a day throughout their secondary school career, and for the past five years has included primary pupils in the award. Award winners will be given a tour of St James’ Park, home of Newcastle United Football Club, in September and a presentation dinner with their families.Parents or schools who think they know someone who might qualify should contact Catherine Jones at County Hall on 0191 3834551.

Dear EditorI am writing in regards about the new power plant that is being built on Chilton Industrial Estate. I’m wondering does anyone else agree with me, it was in the papers saying it’s going to be good for the people of Chilton and would bring work for Chilton people. So why is it, that they only employed
Polish and Germans? I know quite a few young lads from the village who have been up and asked for work. They were told there is no work, which I find absolutely ridiculous. Why can’t we employ our own young people first and give them a better life and it would be ideal, as its just walking distance away for them. They say some youngsters
of today don’t want work, well I know quite a few who are desperate, but it is disheartening when in their own village they get knocked back by foreigners, and no, by the way, I’m not racist. I’m just saddened that the country has come to this. Give Chilton lads the jobs!Name and address withheld on request.

INTERESTED IN STEAM RAILWAYS?

FUNDRAISING SUCCESS
A recent fundraising VE day concert has raised hundreds of pounds for armed forces charities. St Luke’s Singers and the Ferryhill Town Band entertained a full house at St. Luke’s Church Hall and raised £500, to be split between the Royal British Legion and the Help for Heroes charities. The concert was a night of nostalgia with songs from the 40’s and patriotic music from
the “Last Night of the Proms” and everyone was able to join in and have a really good sing song! The organisers of the concert would like to thank everyone who came along, the audience and the participants for making this a truly memorable night.Ferryhill Town Band recently earned a place at the National Brass Band Championship Finals.
The leaders of 1st Ferryhill Scout Group are looking to expand the group’s activities and are holding an open evening on Thursday, 10 June, for adults to find out more. The Scout Group is one of the oldest in the area, having been formed over sixty years ago and not only has great traditions, but a youthful outlook on life. Malcolm Turnbull, the current Group Scout Leader noted that whilst there are 30,000 youngsters on waiting lists across the country, 1st Ferryhill has been able to avoid that situation so far, but wants to recruit some additional adults now to ensure that as many youngsters as possible can be accommodated. The Scout Group has three Sections. The boys and girls in the Beaver Scouts are aged from six to eight years old and enjoy making friends, playing games, going on visits and
helping others.Cub Scouts are aged eight to 10½ and get a chance to try lots of different activities like swimming, music, exploring, computing and collecting. Cub Scouts receive badges for completing activities and showing their skills. The Scouts are aged 10½ to 14 and are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme half of which is given over to taking part in both the traditional Scouting skills, such as camping, survival and cooking as well as the wide range of adventurous activities, anything from abseiling to yachting.Ian Johnson, the local District Commissioner has been working with the Group and told The Chapter that it doesn’t matter if somebody doesn’t have any previous Scouting experience, “What we are looking for are people who want to have fun
POPULAR FERRYHILL SCOUT GROUP TO EXPAND
whilst helping the youngsters to extend themselves; we will provide any training necessary. The open evening has been arranged for Thursday 10th June from 7:30 p.m. so we can give people a chance to find out more.”Those interested in helping out with the youngsters or behind the scenes can simply drop in to the hour long session which will be at the Scout Hall on the corner of Seimans Street and Merrington Road in Dean Bank.More information on the Scout Movement, including opportunities for young people and adults alike, can be obtained locally from Ian Johnson on 0845 0944 084 or from [email protected].
The Chapter will be running a coach trip to Oswaldtwistle Mills Shopping Village in Lancashire on Wednesday, June 30th.Around 4 hours will be spent at the centre, before an afternoon tour of Pendle Witch country. The cost of the trip is £14 per person, including coach fare and afternoon trip. Pick-ups
will be at Chilton, Ferryhill Station and Ferryhill Village, Stand D. For further information, or to book a place, contact Les on 01388 775896 by Friday, June 18th. Anyone wishing to book a seat can also leave payment at Ferryhill or Chilton Library, in an envelope marked for The Chapter.
