Greetings to all. I hope that everyone had a great holiday and a safe one.

GRAND CORRESPONDANTThomas J. Orval

Voyageurs and DamesThe 2017 Grande Midwinter

Petite is right around the corner. It is my hope that we’ll have anoth-er outstanding turnout with Voya-geurs and Dames in attendance in La Crosse. Our own National Sous Chef de Chemin de Fer Jim Vissers is our National guest for the event.

For those who are arriving on Thursday, reservations have been

made to go out and eat as a group at the Blue Moon in Onalaska that evening. The Locale and Cabane have re-served a hospitality room for everyone to go to and social-ize each night.

2017 Communique forms will be handed out at the Mid-winter Petite. For those Locales who are not in attendance, they will be mailed to you. Please follow the instructions included with the Communique forms.

I’ve had nothing but compliments on the way I intro-duced the Grand Chef de Gare Passé at Grand Chef de Gare Rich Ruland’s testimonial. So I’ll do it that way once again at the Midwinter Petite banquet. YES, you had to have been there!

Please remember that the Headquarters Hotel has changed ownership and it is now the AmericInn and the lo-cation is La Crosse instead of Onalaska due to rezoning.

We have not yet received any applications for the posi-tion of Grand Commissaire Intendant or for Grand Sous Correspondant. There have been a few inquiries for Com-missaire Intendant but nothing defi nite. As I’ve stated ear-lier, the position of Grand Sous Correspondant is for some-one who would take my place if something should happen (hope not) and I could no longer fulfi ll the position.

Grand Chef de Train Doug Schaller has already appoint-ed a Grand Aumonier to cover for current Grand Aumo-nier Jerry Benzschawel. Jerry is retiring from this position after eighteen years, and may I say, of “A job extremely well done”.

Grand Chef de Gare Rich, Grand Chef de Train Doug and Grand Sous Chef de Train Joe are planning a mem-bership seminar immediately following the closing of the Midwinter Petite on Saturday. We ask all to attend this very informative seminar.

The Grande Voiture received a check from the Harald Kahlert estate for approximately $18,500.00. For now there is no exact stipulation on what funds we will invest the money in. Harald was a WWII medic, long time mem-ber and Captain of the award winning Grande de Wiscon-sin Color Guard. Thank you Harald!

Invoices for the ad’s in the Badger Forty & Eighter were sent out at the beginning of the month. We are always looking for new ad’s for the magazine. If you know of a business, Locale, Legion Post, etc., please contact Grande Headquarters for the necessary information on this matter. For the Past Grande Chef’s ad, we’ll be collecting mon-ey at the Midwinter Petite Past Chefs’ breakfast on Satur-day morning.

By now, most of you know that Terri Taylor has retired after seventeen years in her position as Executive Secretary at National Headquarters. Landry Foley has been hired to replace her. Landry is a graduate of Indiana University and has 22 years in the Indiana National Guard. Please wel-come her.

Most of you already know that American Legion Camp Director Kevin Moshea is retiring later this year. We all wish Kevin nothing but the best in his future endeavors. And to you Kevin! “JOB WELL DONE”

On Wednesday, March 8th at the Horicon American Le-gion, Dodge County Voiture No. 856 will be conducting a White Collar Wreck. Dinner is served at 6:00 P.M. with the Initiation to follow. Grand Chef de Gare Richard Ruland is scheduled to perform the Initiation. For more information, call Ron Pfalzgraf at 920-485-0107.

Voyageurs and Dames, this last Holiday Season with all of the wonderful Christmas cards we received at Grande Headquarters, I thank you all. Knowing all of the friends my wife Mary and I have made over the years (40) in La Societe for me, I can’t think of a greater Veterans orga-nization I’d rather work for than the Forty ET Eight. God Bless.

Treating you like

FAMILYWe are a nursing facility.

The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King is a long term and rehabilitative care facility serving veterans and their eligible dependents. We offer quality medical and nursing care to enhance quality of life. Our highly trained and dedicated staff strive to meet the unique needs of veterans by providing compassionate care built on the foundation of integrity, honor and respect. We also welcome qualified non-Wisconsin residents. Call us at 715.256.5027 for a tour.

I hope all Voyageurs and their families had a joy-ous, healthy, and safe holiday season.

As we start a new calendar year, most Voiture Lo-cales have a few members who have not paid their dues. These Voyageurs are now considered delin-quent. Ask your Correspondante Locale to identify those Voyageurs that have not renewed their mem-berships in La Societe. Armed with this information, call the members and ask them to send in their dues so that the programs of La Societe can continue. In ad-dition, if you identify a qualifi ed veteran who is not a member, ask him or her to join. Remember, member-ship is everyone’s job.

Just a note: my email address was listed correct-ly twice and incorrectly once in the September issue of the Badger Forty et Eighter. The correct address is [email protected].

If you have not attended a Grand function lately, why not consider joining your fellow Voyageurs at the Mid-Winter Petite Promenade in La Crosse in February? We will have a few meetings and a prom-enade, we will eat a little, and we will socialize with fellow Voyageurs, wives, and Dames. This year, there will also be a Membership Training Seminar. It couldn’t hurt to learn additional techniques to recruit new members or resurrect old ones. Join us, we will have a good time.

Rituals are the ties that bind us. As a Veterans Ser-vice Organization, we have certain ceremonies that we should conduct on an annual basis. They are:

1. A Memorial Service2. A Birthday Celebration

Let us take a moment to briefl y examine each ceremony. The purpose of a Memorial Service is to honor our de-

ceased comrades. We are directed by the Ritual and Man-ual of Ceremonies to at least annually conduct a memorial service. We do that at the Grande level during our Grande Promenade.

The purpose of the Birthday Celebration is to celebrate the founding of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Che-vaux. This is a ceremony that we, as Voyageurs Militaire, should hold every year in March. I, personally, would like to see the Birthday Celebration conducted every year at the Mid-Winter Petite. That is just my personal suggestion.

The Ritual and Manual of Ceremonies, dated Septem-ber 29, 2015, contains both Memorial Ceremonies and the Birthday Celebration. If your Voiture Locale does not have this manual, please feel free to call me at 715-966-0261 to order the manual.

I hope to see everyone at the Mid-Winter Petite-Promenade.

SPECIAL AWARDSRon Pfalzgraf, Grand Directeur

The Awards are Hero of the Year, Voyageur of the Year, Law Offi cer of the Year, and City or Town of the Year.

Last year, there was not a Hero of the Year submitted. There were 3 Voyageurs of the Year, 1 Law Offi cer of the Year, and 1 City of the Year sent in to Grand. We need to do better next year. The rules are as follows: A candidate for Hero of the Year can only be submitted once for a specifi c deed. Law Of-fi cer the same ruling. Voyageur and City or Town of the Year can only be submitted only once every (3) years.

The Nomination Form must be accompanied with a Partic-ipation Form to be considered. Please make sure the forms are complete and have an attachment of why they are being con-sidered and deserving of the award.

At the Grand Level, we also recognize a separate award for Hero under the age of 18. A plague will be given to the Lo-cale that nominated this person to present to the Young Hero at their Promenade.

Greetings from Voiture #1519 in Milwaukee County! We just wanted to write an article and let all of fellow Voyageurs from the Grande of Wisconsin know a little bit of what we have been up to since beginning of June, 2016.

On June 28th, we held our annual Installation of Offi cers. We once again were able to have a full slate of offi cers installed. Some of them stayed the same, others were brand new and some recycled themselves as to mentor fellow Voiture members to move up the ladder as they say. You all know the drill.

On October 26th, we held a White Collar Wreck and installed 6 new members into the 40 et 8. Four of those new members belong to Voiture #1519. They are Gary Geissler, Steven Kohnke, Gary Masnak and Jim Walltich. All are outstanding Vet-erans and members of the American Legion. We are continuing to grow as a Voiture which we can honestly say helped us reach our 100% for this year. Members unfor-tunately lose interest, move and unfortunately pass away. As with any organization, it is tough to replace them at times. We have been very lucky this year with recruit-ing. New members are not done by a long shot in reaching out for more.

The week of Veteran’s Day this year (November 8th), we did a Flags for First Grader presentation to fi rst graders of Edgewood Elementary in Oak Creek. We were excited to be able to put this program once again into action. There were 80 students plus some staff in attendance, and they all of course received their own individual 4’’ by 6’’ fl ag. As we went through the program, it was amazing how much the students knew about the American Flag. They almost answered the questions before we could fi nish asking them. I am proud to say that there are parents and family members al-ready teaching Flag education to their sons and daughters. We have been requested to do this program once again around Memorial Day as the word has spread about Voi-ture 1519’s effort in with Flag education in Milwaukee County.

Just within the last few weeks, we held our December Promenade with a belated Christmas early New Years social that evening. After the shorter than normal Prom-

enade, we had a very nice time celebrating the end of 2106 and talking about our fu-ture plans for Voiture 1519 in 2017. We were pleased to have 16 Voyageurs plus guest in attendance. Lest I forget to mention……Prime Rib.

As you now have read, Voiture 1519 has been fairly active with membership and a program of the 40 et 8 in the last 6 months of 2016. As 2017 begins, we are going to continue with what we started and continue on with our annual Nursing Scholar-ships. We currently sponsor yearly two students from Alverno College. Time will tell if we can sponsor more as we look for new fundraising ideas to help with the Nurs-ing program and other programs of the 40 et 8.

In closing, I would like to wish all of the Voitures in the Grande de Wisconsin good luck with all of your endeavors now and in the future. As for Milwaukee Coun-ty Voiture 1519, we are not going to let this train stop or jump the track.

Good Day Voyageurs Militaire. Let’s talk mem-bership. As I look at the membership numbers of the Grande de Wisconsin, I am beginning to wonder if some of our members are beginning to think that the 40 and 8 is becoming a last man standing organiza-tion. I personally disagree with those voyageurs who believe that. I have talked with several older voya-geurs who have said that no one wants to join the 40 and 8. I also personally disagree with that statement. On October 23rd, I went to Tomah to attend the ini-tiation ceremony for 7 new voyageurs. And none of the new Voyageurs were older than me. Someone IN-VITED these 5 men and 2 women veterans to become members of the 40 and 8. Now, where do we fi nd these veterans to invite to become members of the 40 and 8?? They are in our family; they are our neigh-bors, they go to our church, they work in our schools, fi re departments, police departments, the local busi-nesses and are members of other clubs we belong to. Bottom line is veterans are everywhere. All you have to do is JUST ASK them to become members. If you are uncomfortable talking to them about becoming members, send me their names and telephone num-bers and I will talk to them on your behalf. My phone number is 715-966-0261.

Greetings Dames. I hope ev-eryone had a wonderful holiday season. I want to thank those who invited me to Christmas parties. I had a great time at Tri-County on December 2 and Dane-Jefferson County on December 9.

And now I can’t believe it’s a new year already! Where does the time go?

Please remember to keep track of your hours, miles and money spent for the pro-grams of La Societe de Femme. I know I probably sound like a broken record to you, but it really is im-portant to record and report all the good work you do.

Equally important is getting your membership dues paid. Wisconsin is just over 65 percent now, but we should be much higher than that, especially since Barbara Dotzauer, Cabane 1080, is the Sous Presi-dente Nationale for our area. I’m afraid if we don’t start to show more progress, she is going to come af-ter us, and we don’t want that to happen!

Mid-Winter Petite Rendezvous will be held on Feb-ruary 10 and 11 in La Crosse. Each Cabane Locale should send a report of their activities for the year so far, and our Grande Directeurs will compile them and give us a progress report. This is also a good time to brainstorm ideas and have questions about the programs answered. I hope to see a good turnout of Dames for this meeting. Personally, I look forward to Mid-Winter as a way to help cure my cabin fever — seeing all my Forty and Eight and Cabane friends al-ways cheers me up.

Hello Dames and Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas holiday and spent time with family and friends in spite of the cold and ice. Don’t you just love living in Wisconsin? We never know what Mother Nature is going to throw at us.

Have you renewed your membership? Check your card, make sure it is bright orange and says 2017. You will need it to attend the sessions at Mid-Winter Petite Rendezvous in February.

Four Cabanes have reached 100 percent: 526, 683, 904, and 1080. Congratulations to you all! And there is more good news: LaCrosse County Cabane 830 has welcomed three new Dames! Grande Cabane de Wisconsin has reached 72.29 percent, with only 46 renewals needed to reach 100 percent. Only three states so far have reached 100 percent. We’re ahead of where we were last year at this time; let’s keep that momentum going. Please continue to work hard at collecting those dues. Time is running short, unpaid members on March 31 are considered delinquent.

Our condolences go out to Helen Meyer, Cabane 830, who lost her husband Harley, a member of Voiture 830.

Please continue to ask family and friends to join our wonderful organization and promote our very worthwhile programs. Don’t forget about the resources that are avail-able from Cabane Nationale. Check them out on the web (www.fortyandeight.org) to keep up with some of the happenings and get other information you might need.

If I can be of help to your Cabane in anyway, please contact me at [email protected], or 608-786-2398.

My own Cabane will be your hostess for our Mid-Win-ter Rendezvous Feb. 10 and 11 in LaCrosse. I hope to see you there, “weather” or not.

Please stay warm, and keep our veterans in your prayers.

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It is hard to believe the holidays are over and now getting ready for the incoming New Year.

Membership: Now, we need to get back to our programs and mem-bership. It is time to renew your memberships and get new ones. As of December 29, Wisconsin is at 72.29% with (1) having no re-

newals. Please Dames, work on getting those straggling memberships in so that we can be 100% by Mid-Winter Rendezvous.

Mid-Winter: Mid-Winter Petite Rendezvous will be held at the AmericInn in La Crosse on February 10-11, 2017. Please plan to attend. Dames’ registration of $5.00 per Dame is to be sent to Al Johnson, 840 Mill Street, Apt. 1, West Salem, WI 54669. Please make checks payable to La Crosse County Voiture 830. Remember each Cabane is to bring a report on their activities so far this year for each of our programs. Each Program Directeur will then give an accounting of the Grande Cabane’s progress to date. Di-recteur’s will be receiving a new form at Mid-Winter to re-cord all their activities to date. The Cheminot will start at 9:00 AM on February 11, 2017. The workshop will follow after Cheminot. Please take note of this change. This was done to make sure everyone asks and gets their questions answered on their reports on activities.

All the reports have been mailed out to your Cabane Correspondantes, so please discuss and work on them at your next Rendezvous. Can’t wait to see all those awe-some reports and activities you hard working Dames have been doing and have done on our programs. I would like to start receiving all your reports by the second or third week in June. You can also give them to me if you attend the Camp American Legion weekend. July 1, 2016 is the deadline for all reports.

Endorsements: The Advisory Committee asks that en-dorsements for offi ce be sent to the Grande Correspondan-te or brought to the Mid-Winter Rendezvous so that inter-views can be conducted, if needed. If you or anyone in your Cabane is interested in becoming an offi cer, please submit your endorsement. We also need future Grande Presidentes for the upcoming years.

Dates to remember: Spring Cheminot – TBA at Mid-Winter, if we need one. King Days, June 18, 2017 – 40 & 8 Days Camp American Legion, June 23-25, 2017 – Grande 2017, August 3-6, 2017 at St. Croix Falls.

The Year Around

40 et 8 Days at Camp American Legion

Tom Orval, 40 & 8 Days Chairman

I’d like to start by thanking Grand Chef Rich for ap-pointing me once again as Chairman of this annual event. We are going to try a few different things this year to promote this fun weekend.

For those who are going up on Thursday, we are go-ing to drive over to Three Lakes that afternoon to the Three Lakes Winery to sample their fi ne wines. Down the street, we’ll be patronizing the Three Lakes Amer-ican Legion Post No. 431. They have been taking out an ad for years in the Badger Forty & Eighter, and it’s time to properly thank them. Just a block away is The Black Forest restaurant where we’ll have made reser-vations already.

The Hal Bowen Memorial Stone at Rainbow Flowage.

Overlooking Big Carr Lake.

On Friday, there are two short Committee meet-ings. The Committee on Committee meets for the pur-pose of making recommendations for those Voyageurs who wish to serve on a National Program Committee. Grand Directeur of Special Awards Ron Pfalzgraf and his Committee will be meeting to select winners from the nominations of Hero, Law Offi cer, Towne and Voyageur of the Year.

Friday afternoon is the picnic behind the Rustic Manor and the annual Bean Bag Tournament. We’ll have two sets of boards going this year and a double elimination.

Saturday morning, Dale Mitchell is organizing a fi shing tournament either on Big Carr Lake or Lake Tomahawk. Others will be going on shopping sprees to either Minocqua or Eagle River. Trust me when I say that there are a million shops to see in either resort

town. That afternoon, a number of us will be go-ing on pontoon rides on either Big Carr or Lake Tomahawk. Then, we’ll be out at the Rainbow Flowage for the Satur-day afternoon picnic. This year, there will be steak sandwiches with all of the trimmings and

John Helgeson, Beth Laatsch and Chef Jim Vissers.

for dessert, there will be ice cream. Jim Viss-ers, Dale Mitchell, John

Helgeson and myself are doing the cooking this year.On Friday and Saturday evenings if the weather per-

mits, there will be a bonfi re behind the Rustic Manor. Sunday morning, we’ll all meet out at the Camp for

a delicious breakfast and an update from Camp Direc-tor Kevin Moshea on all of the updates going on at the Camp.

The annual $2,000 donation from the Grande Voi-ture and other donations from Locales, Cabanes and in-dividuals will then be made.

We are planning on purchasing a large show check for picture purposes. I can get one for approximately $65.00 and can change the amount and year.

Forty & Eight Days at Camp American Legion dates this year are June 23rd – 25th. If you plan on being there on Thursday, then make your reservation already for the 22nd. Reservations can be made at the Rustic Manor by calling 715-479-9776. Make sure you men-tion the Forty & Eight when making reservations.

If you have never been up to Forty & Eight Days at Camp, I do urge everyone to make reservations and come on up for without a doubt the most enjoy-able weekend you’ll ever experience with your Forty & Eight family.

I have heard from Voyageurs and Dames from other Grande Voiture’s who are thinking of attending this event. I’m sure if they do, they’ll be back again and again!

The Rustic Manor welcoming the 40 & 8.

It’s time to think about nurses training again. How many times during this past year have you or a

family member had to visit the doctor or a hospital? Who welcomes you and makes you feel more at ease? Nurses are my guess. They are often very warm and loving and caring.

The 40 & 8 gives many wonderful scholarships to nurs-es training students to help them develop all the skills they will need. During the time they are getting their training, we offer scholarships. One of the ways that we earn money to give the scholarships is to sell our nurses training pins.

We have pins from this year and would like to get all of them sold to help add money to the scholarship fund. Pins are a real bargain at only $3.00 each. To get more pins (and I hope you do), please contact me at 752 Beach St. D10 Palmyra WI 53156, or call me at 262-378-1523 (if I don’t answer, please leave a message), or my email ad-dress is [email protected]. I will get them to you through the mail or set them up for you if you’re com-ing to the Mid-Winter Petite Promenade in La Crosse on Feb. 10-11.

Richland County Voiture 1268La Societe Des 40 Homes et 8 ChevauxRichland Center, Wisconsin 53581

Richland Voiture Lo-cale No 1268 Corre-spondant Cecil Groves.

In 1945, 26 prominent and active American Le-gion members and residents of Richland Center and surrounding cities among the scenic hills in Richland County applied for and were granted a charter, #1268 in La Societe. On March 16, 1948, Voyageur Locale 1268 submitted to The Secretary of State of Wiscon-sin the petition, duly authorized by all the offi cers and signed by the Chef de Gare and Correspondant to es-tablish incorporation under Wisconsin Statute 188.12.

Since the inception of Voyageur Locale 1268 in 1945, Richland County has embraced and supported the tenants, principals and programs of La Societe. At this time, it is unknown if there are minutes or histori-cal records of the early years for Voiture Locale 1268 and if they exist, where they might be.

It can be documented with certainty that Voiture Lo-cale 1268 has been offering Nurses Training Scholar-ships for over fi fty (50) years. We have been hold-ing a Pancake and Sausage Breakfast at the American Legion Post 13 Clubhouse in Richland Center twice a year for as long as any living 1268 Voyageur can re-member. The event is always scheduled for the fi rst Sunday in March and again in November. This sin-gle event, held twice a year, has been very success-ful and our only fundraiser. This event has allowed us to offer Nurses Training Scholarships directly from Voiture Locale 1268. It is not known exactly when the fi rst Nurses Training Scholarships, the number or the amount of each scholarship began. We can document that since the year 2000, we have awarded scholarships in the amount of $23,000.00. This past year, we award-ed six (6) $500.00 Nurses Training Scholarships.

In the early years, Voiture Locale 1268 built, main-tained, refurbished and eventually upgraded by replac-ing our “Parade Locomotive”, which is the most visible symbol of La Societe in Richland County. Our “Pa-rade Locomotive” is very recognizable and is frequent-ly requested to participate in a number of events in and surrounding Richland County. Annually, a “Steak Feed” fundraiser is held at the Richland Center Amer-ican Legion Clubhouse. The proceeds from this event are earmarked to maintain, refurbish and eventually re-

in keeping with the ear-ly credo of La Socie-te, where in La Societe was The Honor Society of The American Legion.

Offi cers of Voiture Locale 1268 have assisted a num-ber of children in families that have been victims of fi re or fl ood by providing fi nancial assistance with the necessities of the children under the guidelines of the Charles W. Ardery Child Welfare Trust Fund.

In 2016, Voiture Locale 1268 nominated Richland Center for “The City of the Year Award”, which was subsequently awarded by the Grande Voiture that same year. The city of Richland Center and the citizens have always encouraged and morally assisted Veterans and their causes. Richland Center is the fi rst Purple Heart City in the nation. It also is the home of a beautiful Veterans Memorial with the names of over 8,000 Rich-land County Veterans that served in all the war eras be-ginning with the War of 1812. The Richland County Veterans Memorial is prominently placed along U. S. Highway 14 on land that was donated by the city. As each war era of the Veterans Memorial was unveiled and dedicated, Voyageurs of 1268 were there with the Parade Locomotive front and center as a proud symbol of La Societe and all that we represent.

HISTORY ROOM REPORTBud Mautz, Grand Directeur History Room

I would like to remind all of our members of the im-portance of our organizations history. Much of that his-tory is on display at the American Legion headquarters in Portage. We have pictures of all The Past Grand Chef de Gares & Past Grande Presidentes with the years that they served. Just this month, Grand Correspondant Tom gave me copies of the printings of the very fi rst Consti-tution and Bylaws of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux. These booklets are very rare, very de-sirable and much sought after! They are on display in the museum at Legion Headquarters. We also have many other artifacts of interest going back to the very founding of our great veterans organization. We even have a plaque on display that is not supposed to be there, another black mark on Grand Chef Rich. Our display is not real large, but I think you will fi nd it interesting. It is sort of fun to browse through our past and to think of what we can still accomplish with our devotion to La Societe in the future.
