Mission Statement:The mission of the Wyoming Fly Casters is to promote and enhance the sport of fly fishing and the conservation of fish and their habitat.

Description:The Wyoming Fly Casters club was formed in 1974. The membership currently consists of approximately 160 members. The WFC was orga-nized by a group of dedicated fly fishermen and since the club’s inception the Wyoming Fly Casters have strived to further the sport of fly fishing through conservation and education.

Conservation of our water resources is one of our primary goals and in cooperation with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department we have and will continue to carry out worthwhile projects for the benefit of Wyoming fisheries. In addition to conserving Wyoming’s water resources we encour-age conserving the fish themselves. A fish safely released today will live to give sport to others.

The Backcast is the monthly newsletter of the Wyoming Fly Casters, an affiliate club of the Wyoming Council of Trout Unlimited, the Nature Conservancy and the Federation of Fly Fishers. Editorial content does not necessarily reflect the views of the officers, board or members of the Wyoming Fly Casters.

Annual dues are $20 for an individual, $30 for a family, or $250 for a lifetime individual membership or $450 for a life- time family membership. Visit the club website at www.wyflycasters.org. To pay dues or contact the club, write to P.O. Box 2881, Casper, WY 82602.

The deadline for submission of information for each issue is a week before the end of the month. Make contributions to the next issue by e-mailing material to the Backcast editor at cheryl_ea06@hotmail.com or call (307) 267-1903.

The Backcast is available either in electronic format or through USPS snail mail. To receive each newsletter through a monthly e-mail, you must be able to open .pdf (Adobe Acrobat, a software program available free of charge) documents. Usually, each issue is roughly 1 MB in size, some are larger.

Your e-mail provider may have limits on the size of attachments.

In order to be added to the e-mail list, send a request to cheryl_ea06@hotmail.com. In addition to receiving each issue of the newsletter earlier than your hard copy peers, e-mail subscribers are able to print each copy in vibrant color -- an added plus if the issue is rich in color photographs.

By sub- scribing electronically, you also save the club roughly $17.40 a year in printing and postage expenses.

President’s letterHappy Holidays Fellow Fly Fishing Enthusiasts!

It’s that time of year again, the need to find the perfect gift, cooking an obscene amount of yummy goodies, tight pants, and the ever present sound of Christmas music everywhere you go.

It’s also a time to start making goals for next year. Maybe it’s the 10 pounds you need lose after eating fabulous cookies and other yummy treat over the holidays. It quite possibly is to catch more fish than Joe Meyer (FYI, I don’t think its possible but it can always be a goal). I wanted to remind you of the Game and fish programs you can participate in and one of them is to catch a fish every month. I know for me that is one I would like to start this year. There is also the Cuttslam, catching one of every type of Cutthroat trout found in Wyoming; there are four. The Game and Fish website has others, but those are two that I am going to go for this year, as I have failed the last two years to fulfill it.In an effort to not sound cliché I am going to end with a very heartfelt wish of health, happiness, and prosperity to you all, keeping in mind prosperity is not monetary. May all your endeavors this upcoming year bring you fabulous memories and hands full of fun. Join the Fly club for our Christmas Dinner, December 11, 6:30 at the Izaac Walton League. Tickets are available at the Ugly Bug, or call Cheryl (267-1903). We need a head count by December 6th. That is one-week people! Hop to it! Oh wait that’s Easter. Anyways, I hope to see you there and have a great holiday season.

As the end of the year grows near, most of us will be heading out to purchase our yearly fishing licenses for 2014. There are a few things to consider when making your purchase.

“A Walk-in Area (WIA) is a tract of private land or inaccessible public land on which the Wyoming Game and Fish Department has leased rights for public fishing enjoyment. Public access to a Walk-in Area is limited to fishing only during the time period and only for the specific species agreed upon by the landowner and the Department. Public access to any WIA is restricted to foot traffic only (large WIA’s may have exceptions, please see maps). Anglers are advised not to seek permission from the landowner to fish the approved species on the Walk-in Areas. Have your current fishing license, conservation stamp and just walk right in.

Thank Landowners for access. Respected access is more access to Wyoming waters.

Donate to Access Yes when you purchase fishing licenses” - Wyoming Game & Fish

When you purchase your new fishing license, they will ask if you would like to donate to Access Yes. This is not a mandatory addition to the license, as is the Conservation Stamp. With every donation to Access Yes, you are helping landowners across the state open up their lands to people like us- people who care about conservation, wildlife, and enjoying the great outdoors. Please consider donating to this fund if you have taken advantage of these public access areas- there are several across the state. A map can be found on the Game and Fish website.

The Wyoming Flycasters takes conservation very seriously. As you can see, this public Access area has been severely taken advantage of. When you enter one of these areas, or any fishing area, take a plastic bag along and try to get rid of the garbage that others leave behind. Let’s set an example of how we would like the land to be taken care of.

Lyin’ & Tyin’If you want to learn how to tie flies, or just need an excuse to spend a few hours tying, come down to the Oil and Gas Commission on the Saturday after the general meeting every month (see Calendar). There will be novice tyers and experts in the same room, including Blake Jackson. You can learn new patterns, work on your go-to flies, and chat with club members.

Participation is free, and there will be some suppliers for new tyers. If you have a vice and materials, bring them along. Blake usually does some demonstrations featuring flies that work great in Wyoming waters. 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the Oil and Gas Commission.

CANNED FISH

Directions:

1. Go fishing!

2. Once you get your fish home, clean them as usual. Remove the heads, and remove the skin (optional).

3. Fillet the fish. Don’t worry about the small bones- they will cook down and dissolve or be soft enough to eat, like in canned salmon.

4. Cut fillets into smaller pieces and pack into pint sizes jars. Wide mouth jars work the best but any will do.

6. Leave an inch head space at the top of the jars, but don’t add any liquid.

7. In each pint jar, add 1 tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp BBQ sauce (any brand), and 1/2 tsp salt.

8. Put on lids and rings and put the jars in the pressure canner.

9. Process in pressure canner at 15 lbs for 90 minutes.

10. Enjoy!

Why did you join the Wyoming Flycasters?

My wife and father-in-law got me into fly fishing and are members of the club - it was logical!

What is your favorite fishing experience?

The WFC Ten Sleep outing of 2013, great small creek fishing, good people, and one of the most beautiful area’s of the state!

What is your favorite rod to use and why?

My favorite fly rod is the only one I have, my ROSS Essence FC. Someday I’ll add a few more rods to the collection and we’ll re-evaluate then.

What advice could you give new members to the club?

Go fish with some of the older members of the club, they are a wealth of knowledge.

Are there any outings/events with the club you are looking forward to?

Ten Sleep 2014 is top on my list!

If you could fly fish anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Somewhere in Yellowstone or maybe down in South America.

Besides fly fishing, what are some of your other hobbies?

Photography, making video’s for my YouTube channel, and anything outdoors!

Letter fromthe EditorFlycasters, 2013 is just about over and it has been quite a year! This year seemed to go by a lot faster than any other year before. I apologize for not getting everything I wanted into this issue, but November was a very busy month for me, and I’m not expecting December to be any less hectic! I just wanted to say a few things. I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving and a safe Black Friday.

The Christmas party will be on Wednesday, December 11th at 6:30 p.m. at the Izaak Walton Clubhouse. This will take the place of out general meeting. Don’t miss it! There will be an awesome buffet with potluck desserts. Tickets are still available and are only $10 per person. We need a headcount by December 4th, so call 267-1903 or head down to the Ugly Bug for your tickets!

I have lots of new ideas planned for the BackCast next year so make sure you send in your pictures and tales of fishing adventure! Any ideas are always appreciated- this is the club newsletter not just mine!

Kelly motioned to approve, Lee T. seconded. All in favor.We discussed possible changes and additions to the Backcast for 2014, and ideas for presentations in the following months, including Access Yes program, Public access, and Conservation stamps. We also discussed a possible collaboration of some kind with Casting for Recovery- more information on this to follow. Cheryl will contact the director of Casting for Recovery to get more information. Blake is planning a pre-sentation in January.The Christmas party will be December 11 at 6:30 at Izaak Walton. If there are any people willing to help set up and decorate for the party, we will be meeting at the clubhouse at 1:00 on December 11th. Call Cheryl with questions (267-1903). We will have a second chance raffle and Christmas Fly contest- we will need a head count no later than December 4th so we can book the caterer. The spring banquet committee will meet in January to start planning. If you are interested in helping with this committee, it would be greatly appreciated. See Matt, Kelly, or Cheryl for more information. Cabin Fever clinic will be in March at the Casper Rec Center. Volunteers for casting lessons and fly tying demonstrations are needed. We discussed the River Access project- near the new bridge/highway access. The landowners are not wanting to grant permission for access to the river in these areas. The highway department/DOT are also not in favor of granting a river access. Meeting adjourned at 7:45
