It also means that the Ayurvedic Institute is gearing up for our Summer Intensives! This year, we are focused on advanced education for students and seasoned practitioners. Vasant Lad has developed two intensives that provide the kind of clinical practice that students have requested. Assessment to Management: Clinical Examination with Reference to Specific Pathology July 5 – 11, 2013 Imagine being able to learn in the morning about specific pathologies related to a specific system and then, in the afternoon, to see those clients. That is exactly how this intensive is designed. We will go deep into the pathologies of the liver, gastrointestinal tract, and cardio-pulmonary systems. In the second half of class, we will see patients presenting those conditions. We will observe Dr. Lad in assessment. We will ask questions. Then, Dr. Lad will show us the individual treatment and management protocols. (Details and the application for this program are online here.) Ayurvedic Herbalism for Reproductive Health July 12 – 18, 2013 We are all aware that Ayurveda is holistic. We know that specific pathologies are generally not limited to a symptom or a singular physical system. This seminar will focus on the pathways that are connected to the male and female reproductive systems. We will move through each pathway (srotas) and understand its effect on reproduction and discuss preparations that will affect that pathway, thereby affecting reproduction. We are pleased to provide this advanced clinical experience for those who are in practice or wanting to be in practice. We are aware that many are looking for continued education to increase their confidence and competency in their work. These intensives are our response to your requests. We hope to see you this summer! Page 2-1 May 2013 ● Volume 2, Issue 5 ● www.Ayurveda.com ● (505) 291-9698 May 2013 Volume 2, Issue 5

“Ask the Institute”QuestionWhy are we attracted to the foods that can throw us out of balance? For instance, pittas like spicy foods and kaphas like sweet foods?

~Cindy V. AnswerOur body can create “good” or “bad” cravings, depending on the stage of imbalance. While the aggravated dosha is still in its site in the gastrointestinal tract, home of the digestive fire, our body’s intelligence creates “good” cravings to restore balance. Once the dosha has left its home, perverted cravings appear, pushing the dosha into the disease process.

Our doshas govern our physiology, psychology and behavior. They go through cycles of changes in three stages; accumulation, provocation and pacification; For example, pitta, due to its hot quality, begins to build and accumulate in late spring, is provoked or aggravated in summer and is naturally pacified when the weather cools in the fall. If an increased dosha is not pacified through the change of season, or through diet and lifestyle, it undergoes further changes and disease may occur. Disease is defined as an aggravated dosha that leaves its site, enters the general circulation, and lodges in a tissue, disturbing its qualities. While the aggravated dosha is still in its site, the body’s intelligence creates an aversion to the causal factor and “good” cravings, both of which help restore balance. Pitta types will tend to crave sweet, bitter and astringent foods. If the dosha is not pacified, it then goes into the general circulation in search of a weak spot. At this stage, cravings become perverted and tend to nurture the imbalance.

The Ayurvedic Institute Is AyurYogaDid you know that Dr. Lad created the concept of AyurYoga® as part of the Ayurvedic Institute Studies Program back in 1986? AyurYoga reflects the teachings of Yoga and Ayurveda that have been transmitted to him from his teachers, guru, and his 40+ years of personal practice in these two sciences. Through the blessings and grace of his teachers and personal devotion, Vasant Lad pioneered the concept of blending both Yoga and Ayurveda to teach students how to bring healing, longevity, and happiness in a truly holistic, comprehensive way to clients.

We are honored to continue to bring forth these teachings through the studies

p r o v i d e d in our Ayurvedic S t u d i e s P r o g r a m s as well as by supporting Yoga teachers and practitioners from other schools in learning to incorporate these sciences into everyday practices while working one-on-one with clients. We are pleased to offer intensives and immersions for those of you interested in learning AyurYoga (Ayurvedically-based Yoga) at the Ayurvedic Institute.

Call our Registrar at 505-291-9698, Extension 126 for more information about our AyurYoga Programs offerings.

Join us on The Front Line of Yoga Therapy for the fifth Symposium on Yoga Therapy and Research (SYTAR) in Boston. SYTAR is dedicated entirely to professional education, research, practice, and policy issues for yoga therapy.

Our very own Vasant Lad, will be the Keynote Presenter on Saturday, June 15. His topic will be “The Yoga in Ayurveda and the Ayurveda in Yoga.” Ayurveda is the timeless wisdom of healing and yoga is the practical art of going

beyond time. He also gives a Sunday morning practice session “Pranayama for Self-Healing.” Pranayama is the path of harmony between body, mind, and consciousness. These special breathing exercises unfold cellular intelligence and make the individual happy, peaceful, and blissful.
