Brystol-Myers Squibb Cordis (a Johnson & Johnson Company) IBM Corp. Louisiana-Pacific Corp. Miller Brewing Co.

An Award was recognized for innova- tion, leadership, results andplanning in reducing greenhouse gases emissions through cost-egective energy manage- ment and technology projects. Their achievements follow.

Bristol-Myers Sauibb, Worldwide Clairol The Stamfor4 Conn., facility of Bristol-Myers Squibb houses the Worldwide Beauty Care Group’s (WBCG) headquarters, research and development center, and manufacturing section that produced more than 400 million hair and skillcare products in 1998. Worldwide Clairol, Matrix Essentials and Redmondproducts comprise the WBCG. Worldwide Clairol is committed to greenhouse gas reductions and exemplary leadership in sharing its experiences with other Connecticut companies. Worldwide Clairol spearheaded the formation of the Connecti- cut Climate Wise Partnership and recruited several leading Connecticut companies to join the program. Worldwide Clairol currently serves as a member of the Connecticut Partnership’s steering committee and is working to recruit other Bristol-Myers Squibb facilities to Climate Wise. Clairol also plans to reduce its 1999 energy use by 10 percent per unit ofproduction. For theyears 1998-200, the Stamford facility expects reductions of 3,350,000 kWh/year and 1,089 metric tons of COJyea r, resulting in energy cost savings of $190,000:

Cordis. Miami Lakes Facility Cordis, a Johnson & Johnson company, is the supplier of 70 percent of the diagnostic catheter market and a world leader in the manufacture of health care products. Since joining Climate Wise earlier this year, Cordis has become a leader in the Miami-Dade County, Florida, area nd has facilitated employee energy efficiency education. The company began the Climate Wise program with plans to reduce energy consumption by 20 percent over three years. In 1997, the company initiated lighting upgrades for all buildings and retrofits to the first two buildings. The projects saved almost 150,000

kWh annually. The company also has made signifi- cant improvements to its HVAC system, including are placement of inefficient air conditioning and chillers, installation of programmable thermostats, and implementation of an energy management system. Besides facility improvements, motors and compressed air systems have been replaced, reduc- ing the energy demand of the manufacturing pro- cesses. To help Cordis evaluate and redesign the actual process, a student engineer has undertaken an analysis of the comprehensive energy requirements of each product. The company expects that these actions will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 2,430 metric tons and save $270,089 in 2000.

JohnsontLJohnson Johnson & Johnson, an international leader in health care products and related services, continues to work towards its goal of reducing energy use in 2000 by 25 percent over 199 1 levels. To meet this goal, Johnson & Johnson already has reduced energy use by20.2percent intheU.S. and 19.9percent interna- tionally. Achievements have been credited to the implementation of its Best Management Practices, which addressed efficiency in a full range of end uses and utilized a new tracking database and Intemet-based utility data system to help evaluate energy reductions worldwide. A charter partner in Climate Wise, Green Lights, Energy Star Buildings, and the New Jersey Climate Wise Partnership, Johnson & Johnson has made presentations at many conferences and forums throughout the countty that highlighted the benefits and results of its participa- tion in these voluntary programs and encourage others to join. Johnson & Johnson, an active World Wildlife Fund member, is apast winner of several awards, including the Climate Wise Partner Achieve- ment Award, Green Lights Partner of the Year and Sustained Excellence Award, and Energy Star Buildings Upgrade of the Year Award.

IBM Corp. IBM is committed to energy efficiency. Since producing the first Energy Star-marketed computer in 1993, energy-efficient equipment and processes have expanded across the firm’s diverse product lines. The company’s comprehensive approach to energy management is illustrated by its intemal Environmental Impact Assessments, which are required when any process or product is initially designed or redesigned. Savings from Climate Wise actions are expected to total 272,160 metric tons of CO,in2001 andmorethan$5Smillionin2000. IBM also has hosted its own Climate Wise partnership meeting, held a three-day Global IBM Energy Symposium, maintain’s a seat on the Tri-State Climate Wise steering committee.

Wise partners to help in setting up an action plan. Climate Wise uses the services of the N.C. Industrial Extension Service, the Dept. of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance, and the Industrial Assessment Center to perform surveys. Each survey is a one-day overview with a follow-up report. If additional in-depth surveys are required, the cost for a specific entity, like air compressors or lighting, can be performed at a cost of only $600 to the company.

By performing a survey with a different agency each year, it gives greater credence to being a Climate Wise of NC partner. This survey information will be used to update your action plans and evaluate the results of the previous actions listed. Contact JimHaven, 919-515-8511, forfurtherdetails on how to schedule a survey in conjunction with the action plan and emission-tracking software.

I S 0 14001 OVERVIEW With the expansion of trade markets into the global arena, it is vital that environmental trade barriers are

eliminated so that businesses and industries can compete on a level "environmental playing field." Thus, the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) has developed a series of standards that encourage a more equitable environmental framework for businesses worldwide. IS0 1400 1 is the voluntq standard for companies to establish an environmental management system (EMS) aimed at improving their environ- mental performance through a system approach and continuous improvement principles. Endorsement and implementation of the IS0 14001 standard already is strong in Europe and Asia and becoming more preva- lent in the United States.

Many of the automotive industries soon will become IS0 14001 certified and may require that their suppliers become certified. Ford has registered all 140 of its plants and many require suppliers also to become certified. The Honda of America Manufacturing (HAM) plants in Ohio have achieved IS0 14001 certified. Other industries such as telecommunications, electronics, polymers, textiles, surface coating, chemicals, and others also are active in IS0 14001 registrations.

The Industrial Extension Service and the N.C. Department of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance provide IS0 14001 classes. The classes discuss the similarities between IS0 9000 and 14001.

Three workshops are being planned on IS0 14001EMS with emphasis on the automotive industry. The workshops will be held in Asheville, Winston-Salem and Greenville mid-May. There is an "IS0 l400 1 internal auditor training class'' in Gastonia on Feb. 17 and Feb. 18. For details on these courses, contact Beth Graves, EMS Project Coordinator, NC DPPEA, 919-715-6506, 800-763-0136 [email protected].

Louisiana-Pacific corn, Tomahawk ODeration Louisiana-Pacific, a major building products company, manufactures structural wood panels at its Toma- hawk Operation in Wisconsin. Among its impressive energy-efficiency measures, a system-wide perfor- mance optimization project for wood drying cut en- ergy use by 40 percent, saving 2.4 million kwh of electricity and almost 2,100 metric tons of CO,. The $94,000 in savings resulted in apayoff period of less than six months. Improvements to the compressed air system saved the company about $5,400 annu- ally, an investment that paid off after only one month. Other projects have included insulation of the hot pond used for wood defrosting, reduction of waste heat through process optimization, and redirection of biomass heater exhaust to supplement the dryer system. The Tomahawk Operation actively promotes Climate Wise through its involvement with the Wis- consin Energy Bureau’s Focus on Energy Program and has opened the facility for industrial training sessions and site tours.

Miller BrewinP - Co. Milwaukee Brewerv The Milwaukee brewery of the Miller Brewing Co. had energy saving projects throughout its 150-year history, but in 1998, it embarked on a concentrated campaign to remain competitive withnewer breweries. The campaign began with a baseline audit and was quickly followed by a comprehen- sive energy management system. The system includes regular meterreadings, a proactive system of detecting costly leaks, and any new activities suggested by the departmental energy action teams. Weekly energy audits designed to seek new energy saving opportunities and check progress against company targets, are performed by each department and by a member of senior management on a rotating basis. Miller expects emissions reductions of 18,133 metric tons with cost savings of $1,847,270 in 2000. As anew Climate Wise partner, the Milwaukee brewery hopes to share its successes with other Wisconsin businesses and to learn from the experiences of others in the years to come.
