EXT. SHOT OF WHITECHAPEL DISTRICT - EARLY MORNING

August 31st, 1888

The night sky of The Whitechapel District of London is a bright reddish hue that pierces the night sky.

EXT. LONDON DOCKS

A LARGE warehouse is ENGULFED in flames. Men in boats as well as on shore rush around, trying to EXTINGUISH the fire.

Small puffs of clouds in the distance are outlined by the cloudless sky.

EXT. SHOT OF WHITECHAPEL DISTRICT

An dark outline of an unknown church obstructs the left side of the camera.

As the camera starts to DESCEND we turn to our left only to be facing a darkened street.

EXT. OUTSIDE OF UNKNOWN HOUSE/DOVETON STREET

A tall skinny wooden door opens up on a small narrow house on an unknown street. A rather average height of a man steps out and looks down the street.

Page 6: The Autumn of Terror

A small light lantern provides little light down the street. The man slightly shivers and buttons up his work coat. Halfway thru buttoning his coat he drops his newspaper on the ground.

He finishes buttoning up his coat, then retrieves his newspaper and heads off into the darkness.

EXT. OUTSIDE OF STABLE GATE/BUCKS ROW

A man leans over something in the road. None of his features are visible but he seems to be holding something. He stops and looks up.

A faint echo can be heard throughout Buck’s Row. The man stops and rips off a piece of fabric and puts something inside of it. He stands up and runs off towards the End of Buck’s Row, with the school at the end in view.

Only the lamp at the end of the Row illuminates the man as his dark silhouette rounds the corner and disappears.

EXT. CORNER OF BUCKS ROW AND BRADY STREET

The man stops and looks down the corner of Buck's Row. Crossing the street he walks along a narrow walkway.

As he passes the long row of houses he looks over his shoulder to see the exaggerated never ending row of houses.

Looking back in front of him a dark shadow lying across the sidewalk slowly comes into view, slowly becoming more and more visible.

The man stops and squints his eyes.

Slowly walking towards the shape he sees that its a human.

The man looks around and sees no one. But then footsteps are being heard.

He looks behind him to see another man walking down the street.

CHARLES'Ey Lad!

The man in the street stops and looks at him.

Page 7: The Autumn of Terror

CHARLES(Cont.)Come over 'ere eh? I think this woman to

be layin 'ere.

The other man slowly approaches up to Charles Cross.

The other man is Robert Paul.

ROBERTAye man what you say?

Charles points to the woman.

CHARLESIt’s a woman. I think she’s dead

They both slowly walk up to the body.

The woman’s body is laying slightly angled on the walkway. Her skirts are raised above her abdomen, but the darkness covers any details.

Charles flips the skirt down to the woman’s knees.

CHARLESWhat you think we should do?

Robert kneels down alongside the body and feels her hands.

ROBERTShe's still warm

He then puts his hand on her right breast

ROBERT(Cont.)There seems to be some slight heartbeat.Very little if she's to be breathing.

Robert stands up and looks up and down Buck's Row

Charles puts his hand on her face.

CHARLESSeems dead as a doornail to me lad.

ROBERTWell let’s move her.

Page 8: The Autumn of Terror

Charles stands up and looks at her.

CHARLESYou bloody insane man? I'm not touching

her.

Robert looks at him.

He heads into a dark overpass.

PAN UP:

A small plaque above the curved doorway reads: Woods Buildings

EXT. OUTSIDE OF BUCKS ROW - MINUTES LATER

A constable rounds the corner of Buck’s Row and Brady street. As he slowly moves along his hand held lantern lights the cobble stoned sidewalk in front of him.

A long shot reveals the whole of Buck’s Row, half of it being devoured into total darkness. The only form of light is from the sky above and the lantern of the Constable.

Constables POV: Moving towards the end of the road, in front lays a large object.

The constable raises his lantern and leans in to look at the shape in front of him, which is the same woman Cross and Paul came across.

Page 9: The Autumn of Terror

The light comes upon the face of the woman who’s eyes are wide open. As the constable moves closer, The light cascades down the woman’s neck to show her neck has been cut.

The blood slowly pours out of her neck and onto the sidewalk. The Constables eyes widen.

The Constable drops his lantern. The lantern hit’s the ground and the glass shatters into a million pieces.

The Constable frantically blows into his whistle as he backs up in horror.

The sound of the whistle echoes throughout the entire Row.

CUT TO:

A man’s shoes meet the pavement with a hurried risk as the echo from the whistle can be heard.

EXT. OUTSIDE OF ESSEX WHARF

The constable runs to the doors of the Wharf and bangs on the door frantically.

A window turns on from the first floor of the Essex Wharf. An old man, Purkis, leans out of the window looking down at the constable.

PURKISWhat’s all the bloomin

Whistling for?

NEIL Sir, have you seen or heard Anything within the past hour?

A group of about 6 constables provide a rather small perimeter around the bloodstained area.

Two small kids run down the row as the film slows. Their expressions on the faces show an eagerness to see what is happening.

Pushing thru the crowds they kneel down amongst some of the crowds legs.

The blood is now clearly visible as it seeps into the drains nearby.

A constable pushes on a rather angry man.

PUSHING CONSTABLEI say again man you watch yourself before

I bash your face in.

Some of the crowd starts to try and push thru the perimeter.

Another group of constables walk in and out of the Stable yard.

A constable standing near the gate responds.

BAXTERThen how do you suppose Miss

Chapman died then?

PHILLIPSI am of opinion that that the personWho cut the deceased’s throat tookHold of her by the chin, and then

Commenced the incision fromLeft to right.

BAXTERCould that be done so instantaneously

That a person could not cry out?

PHILLIPSBy pressure on the throat no doubt

It would be possible exactly.

BAXTERSo by thickening of the tongue would

Be significant of suffocation?

PHILLIPSYes. My impression is that she was

Partially strangled.

Abberline leans over to Inspector Chandler.

ABBERLINEAny new leads yet?

CHANDLERNone that I can account for.

The finding of the Leather ApronHas much of the east end in an

Uproar.

ABBERLINEI want increased shifts around

The spitalfields area.

Page 32: The Autumn of Terror

CHANDLERWhy Spitalfields?

ABBERLINE I figure possibly he’s fromThis area. Buck’s Row isn’t

Far from here either.

CHANDLERPossibly a fifteen minute walk.

ABBERLINE Our boy, whoever he is, surely Would make sense to commit his Deeds within walking distance From his lodgings wouldn’t you

Say?

CHANDLERI would imagine. The question isHow much would this chap go to

Commit murder?

ABBERLINEYour guess is as good as mine. Now we focus our investigationOn a ghost who has disappeared

Into thin air.

A slightly overweight man slides in next to Chandler.

THICKEInspector.

Chandler turns to him.

THICKEJust in. We’ve received word that aMan known to the banters a ‘Leather

Apron’ has threatened them within thePast months.

CHANDLERHow so?

THICKEHe threatened to “Rip

Page 33: The Autumn of Terror

Them up”

ABBERLINEEither way, Doctor Phillips

Doesn’t believe the apron to be A big piece of evidence here.

CHANDLERIntriguing. By the way Detective

Sergeant Thicke, this is Inspector Abberline.

Abberline and Thicke exchange handshakes.

CHANDLER Inspector Abberline is going to Help with the investigation.

THICKEVery well. Should we still continue

To pursue the leather tip?

CHANDLERIt would still be helpful, I’dImagine to pursue that route.

ABBERLINEWe’ve also increased routines

Around the Buck’s Row vicinity sinceMany of the detectives, as well asI share the same opinion that this

And the Nichols’ murder were Committed by the same hand.

CHANDLERAbsolutely. But we have to focusOn where he will strike next and

When.Abberline and Chandler, and the rest look to the front podium where a woman sits.

BAXTERDid you see the man’s face?

Abberline looks down at a small tablet and begins to write words into it with his pencil.

About the line of duty.

SWANSONOh aren’t they all.

ABBERLINEIndeed. How are these witnesses

Helping our investigation?

SWANSONWell we have a basic idea

When the deceased was murdered In all reality and also a fair

Composite.

ABBERLINEFrom the back.

SWANSON All details are better than None. Phillips states we

Have our deceased here deadAround 4:30 right?

Abberline nods.

Of the discovery.

Swanson looks at Abberline.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE CENTRAL NEWS AGENCY – MORNING

A large crowd surrounds the CENTRAL NEWS AGENCY building. Plenty of men and women surge away from the building carrying the daily paper, opening it with quick surge and hostility.

Abberline walks through a narrow alley along with Swanson.

As they walk down they pass an young woman who has been depraved by the long strenuous years of poverty. Her skin is covered with blotches and her scalp only possess patches of skin. In her arms she holds a dead malnourished infant.

Abberline looks away quickly, only to see a couple of small children peer out of a broken window.

SWANSONThese papers are filled with all

Rubbish. Now because of the murdersThey’re trying to focus the NovemberElections to the East end. Hoping

And demanding change.

Page 42: The Autumn of Terror

Abberline stops and looks up and down the small alley.

ABBERLINEOnly in dire circumstances do the

Truth eventually come out.

SWANSONAs soon as the elections are over,The East End will disappear back Into the poverty ridden slum.

As Abberline and Swanson end the lane, Swanson stops.

SWANSONIs not as crowded as usual.

ABBERLINEFear.

Abberline reaches down and grabs a paper. The screen pans to a view that reads :THE TELEGRAPH

And below in large letters: BLOODTHIRSTY GHOUL STALKING WHITECHAPEL!

The man joins chase with several others following behind him.

As Squibby quickly runs down a narrow alley way there are large shouts coming from behind as Dew, Abberline, and Swanson lead the chase.

YELLING WOMANGet the killer! Kill him!

The crowded chasing mob behind the detectives deafens all ears. Mothers quickly gather their children and hold them tight as the mob slaughters through.

An old woman begs for mercy as she is trampled by the men and women stomping over her, yelling.

EXT. FLOWER AND DEAN STREET – MOMENTS LATER

OLD MANWhy don’t you get the murderer

You fucking pig!

Other men and women start to push forward. Abberline blows his whistle hard.

Some constables flow onto the scene. Abberline grabs on by the collar.

ABBERLINEGet these bloody people away now!

CONSTABLE Yes Inspector.

Other constables file in and form a line around the house.

Dew and Swanson enter the house, with Abberline behind in tow.

Dew picks him up and handcuffs him. He looks over at Abberline.

DEW Let’s get him out of here.

Abberline and Swanson exit the house, with Dew behind them. As they exit the house the mob erupts with even more anger. By now members of the crowd start to physically fight with the constables.

One constable repeatedly beats a man with his club as Dew and the others quickly jump into a 4 wheel cab. Abberline jumps on the outside with his gun.

He looks to the driver.

ABBERLINEGet us out of here quick!

The cab leaps off down the street, with the mob quickly in tow. As the carriage comes to a stop at the corner, the mob tries to tip it over.

Some of the men and women try to attack the carriage. Abberline quickly fires shots into the air.

Some of the men and women disperse. Others try to grab on more violently.

Sir Charles Warren sits behind his desk, reading a report.

He puts it down and looks up at Abberline.

WARRENThis is frightening.

ABBERLINEExcuse me sir?

WARRENAll this talk of a foreign murderer.

It must be a sign of a Jewish individual.

ABBERLINEWith all due respect sir, we have noEvidence to conclude that a Jew was

Involved.

WARRENWe already have mayhem on the streets.

Warren stands up and looks out his office window, into the street.

WARRENThe witness you stated in yourReport mentioned the deceasedIn the presence of a foreign

Person, did she not?

ABBERLINEShe did.

WARREN

Page 48: The Autumn of Terror

We know an Englishman would never Commit a crime such as those that

Have happened.

ABBERLINEThere is no evidence of just singling

Out on one race of persons in this case.

WAARRENWhere is your proof that it was not a

Jew?

ABBERLINEI have none.

WARRENAh. No evidence. Well I suggest that

MILLSHome.

Mills hiccups

TOUGH GUYYou’re a Jew aren’t you?

Page 49: The Autumn of Terror

EMILYThe mobs run at night screaming

About the Jews.

ABBERLINEIt’ll pass.

EMILYDo you think a Jew killed those

Women?

Abberline looks at her.

ABBERLINE No. There’s no evidence to suggest

That.

EMILYThe papers say that Warren has made itClear that a foreign entity such as

The Jewish community could be responsibleFor the murders.

In solving murders these days.

Abberline looks to the constables, who are standing as still as a board.

WARRENA couple years ago a very dreadful murderOccurred to a young girl at Blackburn inLancashire. As it turns out the writer

ABBERLINEApparently we are bringing in the

Petting zoo for investigation purposes.

Warren looks at Abberline.

WARRENApparently Inspector Abberline feelsThe use of these fine animals feeble In an attempt to catch the killer. In the case of the young Blackburn

Child. These fine animals scented theKiller. And found him. Which lead to

His execution.The constables stand silent.

WARREN So Inspector, before you befuddle yourSelf in your childish tactics of pettingZoos and anti response of animals, I

Suggest you take into account what is atStake here.

Abberline stands up

Page 53: The Autumn of Terror

ABBERLINESir I completely understand. But while

I am here I must say that if this Technique does not work, do we move

Onto cats?

There is a slight chuckle from the group of men.

WARRENInspector. What I put forth here is

Pizer stares down at Abberline. Abberline slightly smirks and retrieves a small piece of paper from his pocket.

ABBERLINEI’m going to read you a little verseWhich is sure to become legend by the

Innocent and free man.

Pizer looks at the small piece of paper with the rhyme. He looks back up at Abberline.

PIZERNumber 22 Mulberry street. I had heard

The camera shines on the dead, mutilated body of Catherine Eddowes.

Watkins quickly holds his hand over his mouth.

Watkins looks over to the Kearly and Tonge Warehouse and notices the door is open. He rushes over to the inside of the doorway.

Morris notices Watkins in the doorway, and quickly looks up.

WATKINSFor gods sake. Come to my assistance!

Watkins rushes back out into the square, followed by Morris.

Morris rushes over to the corner by Watkins with his lamp.

MORRISWhat is the matter?

Watkins moves aside, as Morris comes forward and sees Eddowes dead body.

MORRISOh dear god, there’s another woman

Ripped up to pieces!

WATKINS Go get more help. I’ll stay with the body.

Morris shakes.

Watkins removes his Bobby Hat off, Throwing up into a nearby ditch.

Watkins turns to notice an older man, Dr. GEROGE WILLIAM SEQUERIA.

SEQUERIAWhere is she?

Watkins moves out of the way as he moves forward.

SEQUERIACan I have your lantern please?

WATKINSCertainly Sir.

Sequeria leans in towards the woman’s face.

He stands back up.

SEQUERIAThis woman’s only been dead

for about fifteen minutes. Whoever killed this woman is not

far from here.

DR. FREDERICK GORDON BROWN arrives with several Constables.

Sequeria walks up to him and they talk privately to the side. Brown nods his head in compliance with Sequeria and he rushes over to the body. He motions for a constable to stand over him with a lantern.

Page 75: The Autumn of Terror

BROWNHold it steady lad. I’m going

to take a few notes.

As Brown searches for a pulse, a tall lanky man in a robe comes around the corner with a few more constables. He is MAJOR HENRY SMITH

By now people are starting to wander into the Square to see what the commotion is about.

SMITHWhat happened.

WATKINSAnother murder sir. She’s beendead about 15 maybe 20 minutes.

Smith looks around quickly.

SMITHListen up gentlemen. I want every constable on the alert. Blow yourwhistles. Yell if you have to.

Gather anyone you need to. We needto find this man. Get some men to

block these heathens away.

Some of the constables start to push some of the spectators away.

The sound of whistle’s are heard echoing into the night sky.

EXT. WENTWORTH DWELLINGS/ GOULSTON STREET

GOULSTON STREET is quiet and silent. A long shot shows the right side with the WENTWORTH DWELLINGS. The Ripper moves along the sidewalk, fingering a large, SOILED and STAINED piece of RIPPED Apron.

EXT. ENTRANCE TO 108-119 WENTWORTH DWELLINGS

The Ripper stops in the doorway and walks into it. He pulls out the ripped apron taken from Eddowes. It is stained and saturated with Blood and feces. As he unravels the Apron, blood drips to

Page 76: The Autumn of Terror

the cobble stoned floor. The Killer wipes off a small item with the apron. A KIDNEY.

The sound of WHISTLES and yelling are heard in the distance. The Ripper drops the apron and runs out of the entrance. He walks more silently down the street, stuffing the KIDNEY into his pocket, wiping his hands of the dry blood caked all over his hands.

PC Long walks up to the entrance of 108-119 and shines his light on the floor. He notices the ripped apron, covered in blood and feces.

He immediately looks at the stairs going down, and up and as he proceeds to exit the entrance he looks above the apron He shines his apron on the wall where there is a message written in chalk. It reads:

The Juwes are not the men that will not be blamed for nothing.

Long walks back onto Goulston Street and blows his whistle. A Constable from the end of the street comes rushing to his aid.

EXT. ENTRANCE TO 108-119 WENTWORTH DWELLINGS – SUNRISE

A crowd of constables and other police officials stand around the written message.

SMITHBut what does it mean. That’s

the answer in question.

CONSTABLEPerhaps he’s a Jew.

Sir Charles Warren arrives in the doorway and notices Smith.

SMITHEvening Chaz.

WARRENHenry. How long have you

been awake?

Page 77: The Autumn of Terror

SMITHSince around 2 when I heardabout the ripping in Mitre

Square.

Warren looks at the writing on the wall.

WARRENWhat’s this nonsense?

SMITHOne of the constables found it.Part of the poor woman’s apronwas found soiled in blood under

neath it.

WARRENYou know as well as I do, thatif anyone else should noticethis writing we could have a

problem on our hands.

SMITHYes but this could be of some major importance to the case.

WARRENThe last thing we need is a repeat of the Trafalgar Square

riots.

SMITHThe decision is yours.

Warren looks at a couple constables.

WARRENGet rid of it.

Warren turns around and exits.

INT. INSIDE DUTFIELDS YARD – MOMENTS LATER

Abberline stands over the spot where Stride used to be, now

Page 78: The Autumn of Terror

stained with blood. Swanson comes rushing in. By now the sun is starting to come up and the yard is light by the morning sun.

SWANSONGeorge.

ABBERLINEWhat’s the matter?

SWANSONYou’re not going to believe this. Reports say that thereis another murder over in

Aldgate.

All of the officers and other people around them look towards Swanson in disbelief.

SWANSONFurthermore when they tookthe body to the morgue, theyfound out he took her kidney.

Abberline quickly rushes out of Dutfield’s Yard, with Swanson in tow.

ABBERLINEWhen did it take place?

SWANSONWithin an hour of this one.

Abberline stops and looks at him with shock and disbelief.

ABBERLINEWhere at in Aldgate?

SWANSONMitre Square. Near the Jewish

Synagogue.

As Swanson and Abberline talk, Doctor Covell walks towards Abberline.

Page 79: The Autumn of Terror

Abberline looks at Covell.

ABBERLINEDoctor. What are you doing here?

COVELLGeorge something’s happened to Emma.

INT. INSIDE OF EMMAS HOSPITAL ROOMAbberline paces back and forth. With two constables standing nearby. Covell stands right next to him.

COVELLIt was brought on by stress.

ABBERLINEIt’s all my fault.

COVELLGeorge, listen there was nothingwe could do to have saved the

child.

ABBERLINEYes we could have. I should

have taken leave from the case.I should have spent more time

being a husband than a detective.

COVELLEmma knows what you’re about.

She knows not only that you careabout her but for the public’s safety. She’ll be fine. You

two will be fine.

Godley, and Swanson appear in the doorway.

SWANSONHow is she George?

ABBERLINEShe’ll make it.

Page 80: The Autumn of Terror

SWANSONAnd the child?

Abberline looks down.

GODLEYI’m sorry, mate.

SWANSONWarren’s called an important

meeting.

ABBERLINEOn what occasion?

SWANSONDon’t know. It’s importantthough with last’s night’smurders. The press is having

a field day with it.

GODLEYThey’re referring it to as

the Double Event.

Abberline looks at Covell.

COVELLYou sir, are a detective. Sheneeds her rest. I will tell

her you stopped by.

Abberline nods to him, and then leans over and kisses Emma.

INT. INSIDE OF WARRENS OFFICE – MORNING

Abberline, Swanson, and Godley walk into Warren’s office, which is crowded with other detectives, constables, and a journalist off to the side of Warrens Desk.

ABBERLINEWhat’s going on?

DEWCentral News just got a letter.

Page 81: The Autumn of Terror

I’ve never seen anything like it.

ABBERLINEWhat do you mean?

GODLEYOne of the lads from H Divisionsaid we got a communication from

the killer himself.

Warren stands up from behind his desk, removing his eye glass.

WARRENGentlemen. Two days ago, The

Central News Agency received a letter, supposedly from the killer.

And with the recent murders oftwo more prostitutes, we’re

releasing information about the killer.

Warren hands the two letters to journalist, TOM BULLING.

WARREN(Cont.)Go ahead, Mr. Bulling, If you would

be so inclined.

BULLINGCertainly Sir. (Reads from letter)Dear Boss. I keep on hearing that the police have caught me but they

won’t fix me just yet.

Bulling clears his throat.

BULLING(Cont.)I have laughed when they look so clever and talk about being on theright track. That joke about LeatherApron gave me real fits. I am downon whores and I shant quit ripping

on them til I do get buckled.

WATKINSMan’s bloody mad.

Page 82: The Autumn of Terror

WARRENHold your tongue, Watkins.

BULLING(Cont.)Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. How can they catch me now. I love

my work and want to start again. Youwill soon hear of me again with my

funny little games.

WARRENSkip a little further and tell

the ending note.

BULLINGKeep this letter back till I do a bit more work, then give it outstraight. My knife’s so sharp I want to get to work right away ifI get the chance. Good luck. Signed

yours truly (Pauses)Jack the Ripper.

The men all stand around SILENTLY amongst a room of clouded smoke.

WARRENNow we are currently working with

the Central News to produce facsimilesOf this letter and another one as to

see if anyone recognizes the handwriting.

Abberline raises his hand.

WARRENYes George?

ABBERLINEDo you also propose that we dressthe street boxers up in women’s clothing as to sucker punch the killer too? This “Jack The Ripper”

A small chuckle comes from the group of men.

Page 83: The Autumn of Terror

WARRENAbberline. Watch it.

ABBERLINEWhat else are we supposed to do?You tell us to step up patrols, and what happened? This murderer

ended up killing two women in underand hour. While I was at DutfieldsYard after the first murder where

were you? Warm in your bed?

WARRENDamnit Abberline that is enough! Iheard about your wife, and I am

deeply sorry, but that is inexcusableto act in this manner because of your

stresses in life.

Warren looks around at the men.

WARRENConstables return to your respectivestations. There are meetings all dayon the matter. And detectives, see to it that you review the case files.

Warren sits behind his desk, replacing his eye glass.

WARREN(Cont.)Dismissed.

INT. INSIDE OF ABBERLINES OFFICE – AFTERNOON

Abberline sits behind his desk looking over a file. Dew sits across the room looking through other files.

Godley pinpoints pieces of paper to a board in the room. Swanson and Thicke go over testimony, next to Abberline.

Chandler re-enters the room.

CHANDLERI got the rest of the files from

Page 84: The Autumn of Terror

H Division. Oh and Fred, GeorgeLusk is coming over in a few. He

said it’s important.

THICKEOh don’t tell me it’s that bloke from the Vigilance Committee.

CHANDLERThe one who posted those editorialsabout catching leather apron anddenounced you for apprehending himinstead of him being able to, yeah that’s him. Where have we gotten

so far with the timeline construction.

GODLEYNowhere. Absolutely nowhere.

ABBERLINEI’ve got an idea. It might takea little while longer. How aboutwe start out with the chain of events and work our way up?

SWANSONBeats doing this.

Abberline pulls the chairs around in a circle around the table in the middle of the room.

ABBERLINEFirst of all we know our firstvictim is known as Elizabeth

Stride. Let’s go over the eventsof September 29th, going into theearly morning. Swanson tell us

a little bit about her whereabouts.

Swanson sticks a pipe in his mouth and reads from a sheet of paper he wrote on.

SWANSONAround 6 in the evening she is

Page 85: The Autumn of Terror

spotted at the Queens Head. We have at least three people who

are able to confirm this.

ABBERLINEThat is not of importance. What’s the list of the

witnesses of that evening?

GODLEYWell it consists of PC William

Smith, A Jew named Israel Schwartz.Matthew Packer, and a Mrs. Mortimer.

ABBERLINELet’s start with Smith. Why is he

important?

SWANSONHe is one of the few to have seenthe killer with the deceased, and accurately recognize one of the

victims.

ABBERLINEWhat else?

DEWHis testimony fits into the timeline around the time of her death

so to speak.

ABBERLINEGo on Godley, Let’s hear Smith’s

version of events.

GODLEYVery Well.

EXT. BERNER STREET/FLASHBACK – NIGHT

PC Smith walks along the sidewalk down Berner Street, Around the corner from Commercial Street.

Page 86: The Autumn of Terror

GODLEY(V.O.)Smith’s beat occasionally takeshim about 25 to 30 minutes. Hetherefore was at Berner Street,

Around 12:30 or 12:35

Smith Walks past the front of The International Working Men’s Club, on the other side of the street. The entrance of the yard is slightly open and he walks past a man, and Stride in the doorway talking.

Stride wears a red rose on her coat. Smith looks over and see’s her face as she talks with the man. He looks at the man talking to her. His face is barely seen. Smith looks DOWN to notice the man carrying a long narrow PARCEL covered in newspaper.

GODLEY(V.O.)Around this time Smith also noticeboth persons to be completely sober. And it’s very likely the gentleman

Stride was talking to, is the Ripper.

ABBERLINE(V.O.)Next Witness.

GODLEY(V.O.)Mr. Israel Schwartz is of importancehere. Swanson copied the testimony

from the inquiry.

ISRAEL SCHWARTZ walks down the road in front of the International Working Men’s Club. As he passes the front of the doorway. As Schwartz looks up, he sees a man stop and talk to a woman in the gateway to Dutfield’s Yard.

The man tries to pull the woman into the street, and instead, throws her down on the footway. The woman screams, but not loudly. On the opposite side of the street, another man stands silently smoking a pipe.

Schwartz walks past the entrance to the yard, and towards the intersection of FAIRCLOUGH and BERNER street. The man who threw the woman on the ground turns towards Schwartz.

Page 87: The Autumn of Terror

MANLipski!

The man with the pipe looks at Schwartz, as he starts to walk faster down the road towards the railway arches.

Schwartz walks faster and faster, with the other man, behind him.

INT. INSIDE OF ABBERLINES OFFICE

Abberline stands up.

ABBERLINEBoth of those witnesses are important. But what is the significance of thetwo men in the incident of Schwartz?

SWANSONPossibly the murderer is not one, but

two?

CHANDLERHardly. Hardly. It’s simple. We all know that Lipski is a racial term.Perhaps the gent throwing the ladyto the ground noticed Schwartz wasa Jew, and the fella across the

street also was prejudiced against Jews, and followed him for sticking

his nose in his business.

GODLEYI still believe the murderer is just one. Besides it couldn’t

have been Stride, her dress wasn’tdirty at all when she was found. You would imagine it to be dirtyfrom what that bloke did throwing

the woman into the street.

ABBERLINEAnyways. Let’s continue.

EXT. BERNER STREET/FLASHBACK – NIGHT

Page 88: The Autumn of Terror

ABBERLINE(V.O.)At about 12:40am Morris Eagle

enters the yard.

Eagle walks into the entrance to the yard, and walks over the spot where Stride was found murdered.

ABBERLINE(V.O.)Therefore she was still notdeceased yet. And at one.

Diemschutz enters the yard with his pony. The pony YEILDS immediately upon entering the yard.

ABBERLINE(V.O.)Louis Diemschutz discovers thebody of Elizabeth Stride. Nowan observer, Edward Spooner

Spooner stands off to the side of the yard, near Stride’s body as some other people stand around the body.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)Notices the blood still flowingfrom the wound. By 1:16am whenDoctor Blackwell arrives. The

bleeding stops.

Doctor Blackwell kneels down next to the body. He examines the cut throat, and notices that the bleeding is stopped.

BLACKWELLWoman is deceased. The artery appears to be almost completelydrained. The legs, neck, andchest appear to still be warm.

Blackwell looks to a constable.

BLACKWELLThis woman’s only been dead

about a half hour. Give or takearound 12:45. Not long after

12:56.

Page 89: The Autumn of Terror

ABBERLINE(V.O.)So therefore the chain of events are very simple.

Eagle walks into the entrance to the yard, and walks over the spot where Stride was found murdered.

The camera PANS over to the corner of the one door still shut, covered in complete darkness. Stride is being strangled quietly against the wall. The Killer’s right hand over her throat, with his left covering her mouth.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)As Eagle entered the yard, the murderer was almost caught. Hepossibly could have heard the sounds of Eagle coming, so he

moved towards the darkened area.He was concealed here.

Eagle walks into the club, closing the door behind him. The killer slides over and shuts the entrance to the yard closely while holding Stride against him. He walks, with her trying to thrash about, towards a small puddle where mud is.

The killer throws his elbows on her shoulders, and drops her to the ground. The killer slowly sits up a bit and raises his knife into the air as he continues to strangle Stride. The killer releases his hand, leaving Stride gasping for breath slowly.

The killer brings down his knife and slashes Strides throat.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)By this time he’s slashed herthroat. But there’s a problem.

The killer pauses, and looks towards Berner Street. He hears the sound of an approaching horse and cart.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)The murderer didn’t expect Louis

Diemschutz to arrive.

The killer quickly races into the corner of the yard by the one shut door and stands still.

Page 90: The Autumn of Terror

Louis Diemschutz drives a two wheeled barrow pony into the entrance into Dutfields Yard.

As the pony starts to enter through the yard, it shields left.

Diemschutz comforts his horse as he tries to peer into the darkness at the object laying on the ground. He reaches his whip next to him and he prods the object, trying to move it.

He jumps from his wheel barrow and strikes a match.

The match reveals that of the dead body of Elizabeth Stride.

Diemschutz drops the match.

Diemschutz quickly rushes through the entrance into the International Working Men’s Club.

The killer darts out of the yard.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)Our killer didn’t have the time to

complete the job. So he left. LeavingDutfield’s yard he easily escaped into

Aldgate. He would have avoided CommercialStreet.

SWANSONBut where does he come into play with

Eddowes?

ABBERLINEWe know for an absolute fact thatMiss Eddowes was arrest outside Number 29, Aldgate High Street.

INT. FLASHBACK/INSIDE OF BISHOPSGATE POLICE – LATE NIGHT

Eddowes sits in her cell, SINGING. PC Hutt walks by and Eddowes looks to him.

EDDOWESWhen will I be able to go?

HUTTShortly.

Page 91: The Autumn of Terror

Hutt walks down the narrow hallway, inspecting other prisoners.

ABBERLINE(V.O.)Roughly around 845pm the constableasked her of her name, since she

smelled of drink. She replied nothingso she was taken to the Bishopsgate

Police Station.

PC GEORGE HUTT walks up to a cell and looks inside at Eddowes.

She looks at him.

Hutt unlocks her cell.

ABBERLINE(V.O.)She is release at 1am. At this timeDiemschutz has discovered Stride’s body in Dutfield’s yard. This leavesa window of 45 minutes roughly for ourkiller to walk into Aldgate, meet up with Eddowes and then take her to a

location, murdering her.

Hutt stands up and walks her to the front doors, pushing them open.

Eddowes reaches towards the doors.

HUTTPlease pull it to.

EDDOWESAll right. Good night Old Cock.

Eddowes pulls the door closed and walks into the darkness.

Eddowes walks down the street slowly.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)Me and Swanson traced the walkthe other day at night. It tookus just about roughly 20 minutesto reach Mitre Square, which thenleaves us 20 to 25 more minutes.

Page 92: The Autumn of Terror

EXT. FLASHBACK/ OUTSIDE OF IMPERIAL CLUB/ DUKE STREET – MORNING

Three men stand outside of the Imperial Club, which is right across from the Jewish Synagogue. Next to the Synagogue is a passageway leading into Mitre Square. The three men are JOSEPH LAWENDE, JOSEPH HYAM LEVY, and HARRY HARRIS.

As the men stand and talk, Lawende looks over to the Church Passage and notices two people. Eddowes and an unknown man.

Levy leans over next to Harris.

LEVY Look there. I don’t like going home by myself when I see those

characters about.

Both Levy and Harris walk across the street and past the two people. Lawende walks slightly behind them. As he passes the two people he looks over at them.

Eddowes stands facing the man, with one hand resting on his chest. Lawende passes on, behind his friends as the two individuals still talk in the passageway.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)Now let’s just assume that thiswas Eddowes. That means Lawendesaw her roughly 9 minutes before

her demise.

EXT. FLASHBACK/MITRE SQUARE – MOMENTS LATER

The killer holds Eddowes in his arms, and lays her down onto the pavement. The man’s hands quickly shake and tremble. Sweat POURS from his face. He pulls out a knife from the inside of his coat pocket, crouching right behind Eddowes’ right shoulder.

Overhead shot as the unknown man slices quickly into Eddowes body.

The man’s hands tremble as he slices the woman’s neck. Blood squirts and pours out of her neck, onto the pavement.

Next, he cuts off the tip of her nose. Blood comes out as well. Working in the dark the killer is moving around rapidly, trying

Page 93: The Autumn of Terror

to see. He makes a small grunt and then processes onto the abdomen. He rips open Eddowes chemise and dress, and sticks the knife down by her groin, slashing upwards.

The Ripper pulls out the intestines over her shoulder.

As he leans in, his knife nicks the colon, by mistake. He becomes frustrated, placing the colon to the side of Eddowes’ body. He looks at his hands to notice its covered with feces.

The shape kneeling over Eddowes body looks quickly to hear a small noise coming. The sound of steps coming across the cobble stones.

The man quickly rips off a part of Eddowes Apron, wipes his hands and puts something wet and slime ridden inside of it.

The man quickly rushes towards the Church Passage and disappears into the dark abyss.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)Therefore once again it’s quite possible he was scared off duringthe middle of his crime, or betteryet, as Watkins entered the square,

the Ripper

The Ripper quickly dashes underneath the St. James Passage.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)Was exiting. Once more by sheer luck.

Which brings us to yet another importancein the series of events. The Goulston

Street Graffito.

EXT. FLASHBACK/ ENTRANCE TO 108-119 WENTWORTH DWELLINGS

The Ripper stops in the doorway and walks into it. He pulls out the ripped apron taken from Eddowes.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)We know for a fact that the apronis Eddowes’. At the morgue the

ripped piece fit in perfectly withthe rest of her apron. Thereforewe also have to ask ourself. Why

Page 94: The Autumn of Terror

was the killer heading in this direction? The simple answer is towards home. Why risk going outof your way to play tricks with the police when you’ve committedtwo murders, and the whole city is

looking for you?

The sound of WHISTLES and yelling are heard in the distance. The Ripper drops the apron and runs out of the entrance.

SWANSON(Cont.)What are you saying Fred?

ABBERLINE(Cont.)I’m merely saying that the writingon the wall, although possibly a clue, is probably more than the

writings of some other being. I justcan’t see the killer writing that with the amount of pressure on him.

PC Long walks up to the entrance of 108-119 and shines his light on the floor. He notices the ripped apron, covered in blood and feces.

ABBERLINE(Cont.)It is of my opinion that he livesvery close to all these murders. Also quite possibly within quick walking distance. And had PC Smithor Watkins stopped at any other

time in their beats, then it’s verypossible that we could have caught

him.

INT. INSIDE OF ABBERLINES OFFICE – AFTERNOON

Abberline and the rest of the men sit around the table.

CHANDLERWhat’s the general consensus

then gentlemen?

Page 95: The Autumn of Terror

GODLEYWe have an accurate description

of our killer.

CHANDLERThat’s correct but what witness

best corroborates it?

DEWPerhaps the Stride murder, wherePC Smith saw the deceased with an

unknown man?

SWANSONBut what do you account for thenof the gentleman outside of the Church Passage in Mitre Square?

GODLEYQuite possible for him to havereturned to his lodgings and

to have changed clothing?

ABBERLINEDoubtful. I don’t think that hewas under any influence to stophis impulses to stop at home and

out once more, know thatwe were out after him.

There is a KNOCK at the door.

ABBERLINECome in.

CONSTABLE BEGGSir, Mister Lusk is here to see

you.

ABBERLINEVery well. Let him in.

Lusk enters the room with his cane in one hand, and a small parcel with a letter in the other hand.

Page 96: The Autumn of Terror

LUSKEvening gentlemen.

ABBERLINEEvening George. What do you

have for me?

LUSKWell Inspector, as you know I

am head of the Vigilance Committee.

ABBERLINEGo on.

LUSKWell I received this small parcelin the mail about 3 days ago lads. And I think it’s quite a shocker.

Lusk hands Abberline the small parcel. Abberline somewhat turns his head at the smell of the foul odor. Lusk Reads the letter.

LUSK(Reading)Mr. Lusk. Sir. I send you half

the kidney I took from one woman.preserved it for you. To other

piece I fried and ate it was verynice. I may send you the bloody knife

that took it out if only you waita while longer. Signed. Catch me

when you can Mister Lusk.

Abberline stares into the box.

CHANDLERWhat is it Fred?

ABBERLINEIt’s a kidney.

LUSKWhat is more troublingis the return address.

Page 97: The Autumn of Terror

DEWWhat is it?

LUSKFrom Hell.

ABBERLINECorrect me if I’m wrong, Donaldbut wasn’t Eddowes’ Kidney

missing?

SWANSONYour correct on that Fred.

ABBERLINEWe need to get this inspected

right away.

Inside the small cardboard parcel is a small piece of bloodied kidney wrapped in bloody paper.

GODLEYI know just the doctor to

look at it.

INT. INSIDE OF DOCTOR OPENSHAWS OFFICE/LONDON HOSPITAL – MID DAY

DR. OPENSHAW stands up from behind his desk. Inside the room, Swanson and Abberline sit in chairs in front of him.

OPENSHAWWell gentlemen I must say

that this kidney that I havelooked at is very interesting.

ABBERLINEHow so, Doctor?

OPENSHAWWell the kidney is indeed of female origin. Part of the left kidney. It appears the originator had a drinking

problem as well.

Page 98: The Autumn of Terror

SWANSONJust like Eddowes.

OPENSHAWPrecisely gentlemen. Precisely.I would say that the owner of this kidney did very well passon around the time of the Mitre

Square killing.

ABBERLINECan you tell us anything further?

OPENSHAWI am not finished Inspector. I

believe the owner also was roughlyaround 45 years of age as well. Tell

me something Inspector.

ABBERLINEYes?

OPENSHAWDid Miss Eddowes have Brights

Disease?

ABBERLINEJudging from looking at theautopsy done on her yes.

OPENSHAWSo did the originator of this

here kidney.

Abberline and Swanson stand up, looking at the kidney.

ABBERLINEThank you for your advice, Doctor. While your report is of the uttermost importance, we’re going to also confer with our own doctor,

Doctor Gordon Brown.

Page 99: The Autumn of Terror

OPENSHAWUnderstandable gentlemen. Iwish you the best of luck.

Openshaw stands up and shakes both of the inspectors hands.

INT. INSIDE OF ABBERLINES LIVING ROOM – MIDNIGHT

Abberline stands in front of his fireplace, smoking his pipe. His wife, Emma, sits on the sofa reading a book.

ABBERLINEHow are you feeling darling?

EMMABetter. The medicine is helping.

Abberline walks over to her and sits down next to her.

EMMAFrederick are you alright? You looklike you haven’t slept in weeks.

ABBERLINEI haven’t. This case is going nowhere. It’s been over a month since the doublekillings and your accident. Which was

my fault.

EMMAI’ve told you plenty of times thatit’s alright Fred. Things happen fora reason and I’m (pause) I’m ok now.

Abberline stands up.

ABBERLINENo. No it’s not. Because of youbeing in the hospital now they say your incapable of carrying a child. Because of my stress,

my work. I caused it.

EMMABut Fred.

Page 100: The Autumn of Terror

ABBERLINEDon’t!

Abberline throws his pipe against a wall, and it shatters on the floor. Emma sits on the couch silently looking down.

Abberline exits the room and leaves through the back porch door.

EXT. ABBERLINE’S BACK YARD - MOMENTS LATER

Abberline paces in his backyard, running his fingers through his beard.

The door to his back yard opens. It is Swanson.

SWANSONEmma said you would be back here.

ABBERLINEShe was right.

SWANSONWill you be attending the Lord

Mayor’s Show tomorrow?

ABBERLINEDoubtful. I have some leads Iwant to check out before I do

anything else.

SWANSONYou know Fred, Maybe it’s timeyou and Emma get away from the

city for a while.

ABBERLINEI can’t leave. I have a duty.

Besides why are you here?

SWANSONProblems at home.

ABBERLINEYou and Elizabeth alright?

Page 101: The Autumn of Terror

SWANSONShe’s. She’s gone Fred.

She took Robert and they wentto stay with her parents for

a while.

ABBERLINE I’m sorry to hear that.

SWANSONIt’s alright. I just don’t knowwhat more we can do. We’ve randown every lead possible. We’vegot hardly any suspects. And

have you seen the amounts of mailcoming in claiming to be the ripper?

ABBERLINEYou mean all the hoax letters? It’smadness what this city’s come to.

pure madness. There’s something else?

SWANSONWarren resigned today.

Abberline looks at the ground.

SWANSONThis madman is running everyone’s

lives.

ABBERLINEWarren wasn’t dealing with the

situation properly either.

SWANSONMaybe he was. Maybe he wasn’t.Maybe we’ll never catch this

psychopath.

Abberline.

ABBERLINEFor the rest of our lives then

we would live in fear. Looking at

Page 102: The Autumn of Terror

someone constantly. Wondering. If they’re the killer or not.

SWANSONAnyways. It’s late. I figured youand I could head to the pub. Maybe

get a pint.

ABBERLINEI could use it.

INT. INSIDE 27 DORSET STREET – MORNING

JOHN MCCARTHY stands behind his counter overlooking his books. He looks over at a clock nearby. The time reads 10:45 am.

He closes his book and sets his pen aside.

MCCARTHYTommy!

His assistant, THOMAS BOYER, comes into the small area of his shop.

BOYERYes Mr. McCarthy?

MCCARTHYGo around back to MaryKelly’s room. See if shehas the means to pay me this morning. I want to catch her before she goesoff to the Mayor’s Show.

BOYERYes sir.

EXT. OUTSIDE OF NUMBER 13 MILLERS COURT – SECONDS LATER

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH 1888

Boyer walks through the narrow walkway into Millers Court. Boyer walks to the door to his right and knocks on it.

There is no answer, so he knocks once more.

Page 103: The Autumn of Terror

BOYER

Mary. Mister McCarthywants to know if you have

his doss or not.

There is still SILENCE. Boyer looks down the narrow court inside. Clothes hanging from clotheslines flap in the morning wind.

Boyer walks around to the window, and looks through the broken window, pushing the curtain away with three of his fingers.

Inside the darkened room, as the rays of light shine in, produce the sight of a lump of flesh on the table next to the bed, blood seeping onto the woodened floor.

Boyer backs off slightly, and confused. He leans in forward for one more look.

On the bed, in darkness, but barely visible, lays the body of a mutilated woman.

BOYEROh Christ.

Boyer runs through the narrow alleyway.

INT. INSIDE OF 27 DORSET STREET – SECONDS LATER

Boyer RUSHES into McCarthy’s office, out of breath, and frightened.

MCCARTHYWhat’s the matter?

BOYERGovernor. I knocked at the

door and could not make anyoneanswer.

Boyer is stammering his words, nervously.

BOYER(Cont.)So I looked through the window

and I saw a lot of blood.

EXT. OUTSIDE OF NUMBER 13 MILLERS COURT – SECONDS LATER

Page 104: The Autumn of Terror

Boyer walks through the alleyway with McCarthy.

As Boyer stands back, McCarthy looks through the window. He immediately turns away, trying not to vomit.

MCCARTHYGo at once to the Police Station.Fetch someone here immediately.

BOYERYes Governor.

Boyer runs off.

INT. COMMERCIAL STREET POLICE STATION – MOMENTS LATER

Abberline walks into the station. Behind the desk, Inspector WALTER BECK and Inspector Dew are standing behind the desk talking.

ABBERLINEGood evening gentlemen.

DEWEvening Fred. How’s the

work load going for ScotlandYard?

ABBERLINENowhere. Yourself?

DEWSame. I was just talking to Inspector Beck here about thepossibility our Ripper here is

dead.

Boyer comes rushing into the Station. The three Inspectors look at him. Boyer is out of breath, shaking profusely, stammering again.

DEWWhat’s going on lad?

BOYERAnother one. (Mumbling)

Page 105: The Autumn of Terror

DEWSay again?

BOYERAnother one. Jack the Ripper.

Awful (Mumbling) Mister McCarthySent me.

Abberline becomes excited.

ABBERLINEWhere?!

BOYERNumber 27, Dorset Street. Miller’s

Court.

Beck and Dew quickly get from behind the desk. Dew blows on his whistle.

DEWI need all available constables

on foot immediately.

Constables peek their head out from some of the doorways.

DEWThere’s been another murder lads!

Round up anyone possible.

Boyer flies out of the door with Abberline, Dew, and Beck behind him. Several constables also follow quickly.

EXT. COMMERCIAL STREET – SECONDS LATER

The three inspectors dash down the street, following Boyer. Several policemen run behind them blaring their whistles. Other constables follow in pursuit.

Passerby’s on the street look around curiously as to what is going on. An old woman on a nearby sidewalk shutters her child as the men run past her.

EXT. NUMBER 13 MITRE SQUARE – NOON

Page 106: The Autumn of Terror

The inspectors arrive through the narrow walkway back into Miller’s Court. Abberline stops one of the constables.

ABBERLINENo one gets past the mainentrance into here unless they are police officials.

CONSTABLE SKINNERYes sir.

They see McCarthy standing near the window. Dew walks over to the door and tries it. He turns to the other men.

DEWNo budge.

Inspector Beck looks through the hole in the glass. Immediately he staggers back. Dew walks forward with curiosity.

Beck stops Dew.

BECKNo. For God’s Sake Dew. Don’t

look.

Dew pushes Beck aside and peers inside the window.

DEWJesus Christ.

Dew steps back, aghast.

Doctor George Bagster Phillips arrives.

PHILLIPSExcuse me Gentlemen. Coming through

coming through.

Phillips walks into the courtyard.

PHILLIPSWhere’s she at Inspector.

DEWInside sir. Look through the window.

Page 107: The Autumn of Terror

Phillips walks over to the window and peers through.

PHILLIPSIt seems as though she is beyondhelp gentlemen. But we should waitupon entering the door. The dogs are

being sent for.

ABBERLINEDogs?

PHILLIPSYes. To test for a possible scent

for the killer of course.

ABBERLINEAny scent would have been trampledby those coming to and from the

courtyard sir.

ARNOLD(O.S.)There are no dogs. Someone force

that door open.

SUPERINTENDENT ARNOLD stands off to the side. McCarthy grabs a nearby Pickaxe.

McCarthy walks over to the door and begins to bring it down upon the door. Finally the door is opened.

INT. INSIDE OF NUMBER 13

The door opens as light floods the room. The walls are of a light tan color. Inside the room is revealed to be that of a small clutter. Phillips, Abberline, Dew and Beck enter the room.

Beck vomits to the side as he smells the odor.

Abberline looks around the room towards the fireplace. A small picture hangs over it. Phillips rushes over to the bedside of the woman.

PHILLIPSIt appears as if her throatwas cut. Cause of death due

Page 108: The Autumn of Terror

to the slashing of the rightcarotid artery.

Phillips backs up. Abberline and Dew stare at the woman’s body.

The woman, MARY KELLY, lays on the bed. The skin is completely cut off from her upper body, leaving her arms intact, as well as her lower thighs. Her groin area is MISSING and her breasts CUT OFF.

Her face is mutilated beyond belief. And behind her head, the spray of the darkened dry blood from the severing of her neck. One of her eyes is clearly seen, intact.

Abberline looks to the table next to the bed. Two LUMPS of flesh are on it. The flesh also consists of two of the breasts that are severed from her body.

ABBERLINEHe’s gone mad.

PHILLIPSHe was already made Inspector.

We just gave him time to fulfillhis work.

A constable stands in the doorway.

CONSTABLEInspector Abberline.

Abberline looks over to him.

CONSTABLEMr. Martin, the photographer

is here.

ABBERLINELet him in.

Joseph Martin enters with his camera. He stops and pauses at the sight of the body on the bed.

ABBERLINEPosition the camera here.

I want the whole body in frame.

Page 109: The Autumn of Terror

MARTINYes(pause) Yes Inspector.

Abberline looks over at Dew.

ABBERLINELooks like we’re back to square

one.

DEWUnfortunately. Any suggestions?

ABBERLINENot at this time.

INT. INSIDE ABBERLINES BEDROOM – LATER AFTERNOON

Abberline stares down at his hands, curiously. He runs his hand through his hairline.

As he looks out the window he looks at the people walking by his window on the street outside.

ABBERLINEWhere are you, you fucking

pig. Where the fuck are you?!(Yelling)

Abberline slams his fists on his bed. Emma enters the room.

EMMAIs everything alright Frederick?I heard about the news. Poor

(Cut off)

Abberline rushes to her side, and falls onto his knees. He wraps his arms around Emma’s waist and begins to sob.

Emma stands there silently as Abberline completely falls apart.

INT. INSIDE OF DEWS OFFICE – NIGHT

A constable enters the office of Walter Dew.

DEWYes?

Page 110: The Autumn of Terror

CONSTABLEIs Inspector Abberline here sir?

DEWNo he’s on leave. What’s the matter?

CONSTABLENothing sir. We arrested an interesting

fellow.

DEWGo on.

CONSTABLEAn American who was released not too

long ago was arrested today.

DEWUnder what conditions?

CONSTABLEOf being Jack the Ripper, sir.

Dew stands up and walks around his desk.

DEWWhere is he?

CONSTABLE In the holding cell Sir.

DEWTake me to him.

INT. INSIDE OF HOLDING CELL

The constable unlocks the cell door and Dew walks into the cell. On the cot sits a well dressed man. He is of older appearance and has a rather unique looking moustache.

DEWMy name is Walter Dew. Detective

Constable. And you are?

TUMBLETYDr. Francis Tumblety.

Page 111: The Autumn of Terror

DEWYou know why you’ve been arrested

, Doctor?

TUMBLETYThey tell me it’s because of those

murders of those women.

DEWThat’s right Doctor.

TUMBLETYI don’t know why. I wouldn’t evengo near one of them. You see. I prefer my significant other with

muscle and more masculinity (Smiling)

DEWI did read you’ve been arrested

several times for euphemisms basedon homosexual tendencies. You werereleased right before the Kelly

murder is that right?

TUMBLETYYes I seem to believe it was aboutthat incident over on Batty Street.

The gentlemen told me he wouldfulfill my wildest dreams and well

(Dew Interrupts)

DEWYour stories are none of my concern.

Dew shuts the door of the cell and walks away. Tumblety brushes off his coat and lays back on his cot.

ELDER ABBERLINE(V.O.)Interestingly enough we only had several suspects after the last

known canonical murder.

EXT. SHORE BANK OF THE THAMES – MORNING

Page 112: The Autumn of Terror

Abberline, with some hair thinning stands on the banks of the Thames as two constables pull a bloated man from the water. A deceased man.

Dew and Chandler stand on the bank.

ELDER ABBERLINE(V.O.)We located the body of MontagueJohn Druitt. A barrister who

committed suicide after the Kelly murder. Although we ran into a deadend with him. It seems as though the

only coincidence with the Ripper Killingswas his untimely death.

Dew kneels down next to Druitt’s body and pulls out identification.

DEWIt’s him.

ABBERLINEAs expected. Notify the family.

ELDER ABBERLINE(V.O.)Although both Druitt and Tumblety

were odd characters. I firmly believethere to be no attested evidence against

them both.

INT. INSIDE OF UNKNOWN BARBER SHOP – MORNING

Inside the barber shop, an older man, with black hair and a large moustache. The man is GEORGE CHAPMAN.

He looks towards the door as someone else enters.

ELDER ABBERLINE(V.O.)On March 20th, 1903, a peculiarfellow, known as George Chapman.Birth name Severin Klosowski, wasconvicted of poising his fourth

wife. It was here after a long timeI met up with George Godley once

more.

Page 113: The Autumn of Terror

EXT. PRISON COURTYARD - NOON

Chapman is walked to the scaffold. In the audience sits Abberline and Godley.

Chapman stands upon the top of the scaffold.

ELDER ABBERLINE(V.O.)He was hanged on April 7th, 1903.The full story of Chapman beforehis conviction is what interestedme to be quite honest. Since thenhe is one of the leading suspects

on the case, although he is deceased.I witnessed his hanging three months

ago.

The floor drops and Chapman’s body hangs, silently.

ELDER ABBERLINE(V.O.)But perhaps a more interestingsuspect may develop one day Mr.Henderson. Some day. The only other individual to my knowledgeis only know to us as David Cohen.

INT. INSIDE COHENS HOLDING CELL/ COLNEY HATCH ASYLYM – MORNING

COHEN sits against the dark wall, mumbling to himself. His hands trembling.

His eyes are moving all over the place, sweat dripping from his hair.

Abberline stares at Cohen through the door, silently.

ELDER ABBERLINE(V.O.)Cohen possessed homicidal

tendencies, and a great hatredof women. He died in October of1889 due to exhaustion of mania.

INT. INSIDE OF ABBERLINES LIVING ROOM – PRESENT DAY 1903

Page 114: The Autumn of Terror

Henderson sits at the table shocked and stunned, his paper full of notes, and his pen still in his hand.

ELDER ABBERLINEAnd that’s my story of Jack

the Ripper.

HENDERSONSo besides the array of suspects, you don’t feel Jack is amongst

them?

ELDER ABBERLINENot at all my boy. In fact, Idon’t believe we are any wiseron the subject than we were 15

years ago. It’s not an assumption.but fact.

HENDERSONI don’t understand.

ELDER ABBERLINEHow about a walk. Maybe I can

explain it better.

EXT. MITRE SQUARE – MORNING

Abberline and Henderson walk into Mitre Square, which has a few people in it. The location has changed a bit. Some men unload a cart and pony in the nearby Warehouse.

ELDER ABBERLINEIt’s been 15 years and still nothing. We didn’t have the use of fingerprints and we hadto catch him at the scene.

HENDERSONThis is Mitre Square

Henderson and Abberline stand in the center of the square.

Abberline nods. He points to the corner near the coal chute, where Eddowes’ body was found.

Page 115: The Autumn of Terror

ELDER ABBERLINEAnd there is where the body of Poor Catherine Eddowes was found.

A couple of kids play in the corner.

ELDER ABBERLINEYou see Henderson. They still haven’t caught him. He could

very well be amongst us. Londonhowever, has moved forward. The

conditions in Whitechapel were soonobserved by the queen and a majoroverhaul began. Jack The Ripper’s

London is disappearing.

HENDERSONWhat’s your hope for the case

though Mr. Abberline?

ELDER ABBERLINEHope? I’ve lost hope. There is no

hope left. Only redemption.

The kids nearby run around, yelling “Jack the Ripper” is dead. They sing the rhyme in unison.

CHILDRENJack the Ripper is Dead.Jack the Ripper is Dead.

ELDER ABBERLINEThe only thing that can save London

for her future is redemption.

The camera starts to rise, and turns slowly over the Warehouses and buildings of Kearly and Tonge.

The camera does a full revelation showing a enormous panoramic picture of London. Smoke from nearby houses and factories emancipate into the morning sky. Birds fly through the clouds and the sun light.

The following type appears on screen:

Page 116: The Autumn of Terror

After the murder of Mary Kelly, the Whitechapel murders ceased.

Frederick George Abberline, retired with the title of Chief Inspector from the Metropolitan Police in 1892. He continued private detective work, notably through the famous Pinkerton Agency. He died on December 10th, 1929, at the age of 86.

Walter Dew was promoted to Chief Inspector in 1906. In 1910 he was famous known for arresting Dr. Crippen. Upon so, he retired setting up as a confidential agent. He died in 1947, at the age of 84.

George Godley was best known for the arrest of George Chapman in 1903. He retired from the Metropolitan Police with the rank of Inspector. He died on July 20th 1941, at the age of 85.

The murders of Jack the ripper never revealed any concrete suspect. The case was officially closed, without any arrests, in 1892.
