This our Autumn edition of the Jersey Journal is also the traditional time for Annual General Meetings, May 17th - 19th the Mt Compass Jersey Breeders Cattle Club and Jersey Australia (SA) invite all Jersey Enthusiasts to “An Encounter with Jerseys”. The third Jersey Australia AGM is only part of the program of three days chock full of Jersey events. I am very excited that Ben Hayes from DPI (who handles the Jersey Jernomic research project) and Joanne Bills from Dairy Australia have been named guest speakers at the Jersey Australia AGM. Members will get to hear firsthand how impressed the DPI, ADHIS and Dairy Australia have been with the efforts made by the Jersey community to support the recent Jersey Research. I don’t want to steal the speakers thunder but the response from our members has put pressure on the laboratories on how they can get through the workload. Members with questions about Genomics or Dairy Australia’s forecasts for the coming year should make sure they attend as these are definitely the people to ask.Speaking of Genomics I’d like to thank Doug Phillips, Semex Australia, ABS Australia, World Wide Sires Australia, Cobden AB, Melissa Eddy, Peter Farrell, Agrigene, Glenarron Jerseys, Nowell Jerseys, Kerry McGarvie, Kaddy Jerseys, Chris MacKenzie, Central Sires, Rohan Sprunt and Peter Sprunt for their donations of semen toward building a larger more accurate genome database of sires. This list of sires provides the basis of all future genome proofs to be released here in Australia, without it the Jersey breed might have been waiting at least two more years for decent genomic ABV’s. Your donations doubled the original reference set from 332 bulls tested by the CRC to well over 700 making it very possible to see genome proofs released on all bulls later this year - well done!

More still needs to be done in this area so members with old semen that might be available for testing should contact Jersey House for more information or alternatively go to the jersey website www.jersey.com.au scroll the page to see the section on semen donations and click the more information link. This link will provide a list of sires that we currently need to get tested and once you’ve worked out that you have some of these untested sires it couldn’t be simpler, just pop the semen in an envelope and post to Jersey House -that’s right the semen doesn’t have to be frozen to be genome tested.Jersey Australia has had a good year as you will have noted in the annual report sent to all voting members. Some will flip quickly to the back of the report to see what the numbers look like but the good news is actually hidden amongst the reports penned by the Jersey Australia Executive. Many projects were undertaken and despite a tight budget I believe the organisation has delivered plenty to be proud of during the past year.I’d like to thank members for their support and of course for helping us reach our 2010 registration target of 14,000 registrations. It was great to watch the office buzz with excitement as each week the tally was updated on our website for all to see, the final result was 14,475 a big lift on the previous year.Jersey Marketing Service continues to contribute to the Jersey Australia bottom line as well as ensuring that members will receive at the very least a 10% discount on semen purchases. There has been a noticeable drop in members making use of the service during 2010 and I hope this can be turned around during 2011. Cattle Clubs receive 5% of its members semen orders back in the form of rebates plus a percentage of insurance premiums from CGU Insurers within the club which totalled

$7,235 during the 2010. The Goulburn Murray Club for instance received $1204 in rebates from members purchases throughout the year, I know all clubs are seeking ways to raise money for regional events and I encourage you to take another look at the opportunity JMS provides. How do you order semen through JMS? Call or email the Jersey Office with the semen you require and when you want it delivered or alternatively if you purchase directly through semen company reps when they visit your farm ask that the order be put through JMS. An account for the semen will be sent from the office and when its paid commissions are then sent to your Club Treasurer - very simple! At time of writing, applications for Classification Tour 1 were being processed by the office and I’d like to remind members that classifiers have been instructed by the Board not to assess animals presented for classification in the paddock. This rule will be enforced during 2011 as means of ensuring that classifiers are not held up from one visit to the next as an unnecessary delay impacts on the entire days visits. The Jersey Membership Booklet is currently at the printers and should be distributed with the June/July edition of the Jersey Journal. Many thanks to the members who supported the publication with advertising, it’s the advertising that makes this well used publication possible to print annually and having it printed makes it really easy to promote our breed to someone thinking about Jerseys. Finally a big congratulations to Don & Jan Murray of Spring Gully Jerseys who were drawn from a barrel of membership renewals at the April meeting here at Jersey House. They won the Early Bird draw of $200 worth of Jersey Australia services which I’m sure Mr Murray will find a use for in the coming year.

Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory is planning steady growth to meet strong demand for the pure Jersey Milk brand it launched six months ago in 20 supermarkets in south-west Victoria.

One and two-litre cartons of Jersey Milk are now sold in more than 150 Victorian supermarkets.

Jersey Milk is also being released in new packaging in Sydney as WCBF steadily increases its dedicated throughput of milk from farms with all-Jersey herds.

WCBF retail dairying manager Bill Slater says supermarkets welcome the new brand, which retails at about $2.10 a litre.

Bill says there has been good feedback from consumers including coffee shops where baristas find Jersey milk gives silkier crema on cappuccinos.

The idea for the product began in a chat two years ago between Warrnambool Jersey identity Dick Prendergast and Bill, a marketing executive who worked with large milk processors in Melbourne and Brisbane before coming to Warrnambool.

Dick mentioned that their area of south-west Victoria had a high rate of all-Jersey herds.

Bill researched the concept of using their milk to create a pure Jersey Milk brand. He found that it could

work with milk sourced from all-Jersey herds close to the factory.

Sales began in 20 supermarkets around Warrnambool six months ago, backed by television advertising.

Bill says supermarkets welcome a new and different quality product, and consumers love it.

Sales have grown and Jersey Milk is now on sale in up to 200 Victorian supermarkets, including shops in western Melbourne.

WCBF plans further expansion of sales from their current level around 4000 litres a week.

Only a few farms so far have supplied milk for the new product which is shipped with four per cent butterfat.

Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory stems from a cooperative founded in 1888.

Bill says it is now “a listed company with a cooperative attitude” that is largely owned by farmers. WCBF also has a supermarket and a fuel outlet.

The factory has 600 suppliers between Adelaide and eastern Victoria, with most in south-west Victoria.

It processes 900million litres of milk a year, making products including cheese, butter, skim milk powder and whey protein. It also makes baby-formula ingredients with an overseas partner.

Half of WCBF’s products are exported, but it also produces 38million litres of drinking milk a year for local markets.

Bill says the high proportion of all-Jersey farms close to the factory enable a product which requires farms, tankers and production lines dedicated to pure Jersey Milk.

“We always planned it to be a niche product,” he says.

“We are holding back the growth, but there is every indication that it will take off, and be a good performing product for us.

“Our ambition is to have it between two and three million litres per annum. I think we’ll achieve it.

“If it takes off any bigger than that, that will be fantastic.

“Sydney might explode with it, you don’t know.

“If consumers are looking for a richer, higher-quality product, they can’t go past it.”

The farmers who produce the pure Jersey Milk don’t receive extra payments beyond their normal uplifts for higher components.

But Bill says all WCBF suppliers benefit from innovations which bolster hedging against changes in international milk prices.

One of the farms that supplies milk for the new brand is “Maritana”, located at Turnin, 20km north of Warrnambool.

Brother and sister Stephen and Margaret Gleeson and their mother Freda are proud to see their milk on sale branded as Jersey Milk.

Margaret says her fiends tell her it is great for baking. The Gleesons milk 150 Jerseys on

80 hectares with black volcanic soils.

Margaret and Freda raise all their calves themselves. Margaret says placid temperament is one reasons she loves Jerseys, which also have higher stocking rates and deliver higher components.

Their heifers are joined to a Jersey bull. Milkers are inseminated with semen chosen from around the world to complement the characteristics of each cow.

Margaret says all their cows are different, but they are all Jerseys.

The Mt Compass Jersey Cattle Club will celebrate their 46th year this year, and its members are thrilled to be hosting the upcoming national Jersey Australia Conference & AGM, commencing the week of 16 May 2011. The conference venue is set in Encounter Bay, Victor Harbor, which is located near the tip of the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula. Conference participants will be able to encounter some of South Australia’s best Jersey breeders, and we have three action packed days planned in the itinerary.

The organizing committee has arranged a bus to collect delegates from Adelaide Airport Monday 16th May, in the late afternoon, roughly 4pm. After which, there is an opportunity to congregate at a Whalers Inn, Victor Harbor on Monday 16th May at 5:30pm for Welcome Drinks. The sweeping coastal vista will welcome everyone to Encounter Bay, and you can see ocean views. You will see straight out towards scenic Granite Island, Wright Island, and the bustling regional metropolis of Victor Harbor. It is in this bay in April 1802 the British navigator Matthew Flinders and his French counterpart Nicolas Baudin met at Encounter Bay. You may also have the chance to watch

the Southern White Whales as they meander past on their way to calm waters for winter calving!

We will flock together early on Tuesday 17th May for the Mt Compass Jersey Cattle Club Heifer Competition. This annual event showcases 10 Jersey stud breeders from the Fleurieu Peninsula. We are most excited to welcome Mr

Geoff Hazelwood from Tasmania to judge the Heifer Competition, and a special feature this year is to offer participants the chance to enter a vote in the People’s Choice - Best Group of Three - Heifers. A stop at Alexandrina Cheese Company, in the heart of the Fleurieu Peninsula, will be a great chance to gather together at the regions’ Best Tourism Attraction for delicious afternoon tea. Late afternoon, we head back to our accommodation to refresh. Get ready for a lively evening, with an opportunity to meet and greet the members of the Mt Compass Jersey Cattle Club at the informal presentation dinner at Currency Creek Winery Complex, near Goolwa. This is the day to chat with many of the outstanding jersey breeders in the region, and encounter jerseys! Again, those booked on the bus will have an easy day, while there is opportunity to grab the map, and follow along in your own vehicle.

Wednesday 18th May offers a slower start, so you may choose to enjoy breakfast with views of the magnificent golfing greens at McCracken. The

board will welcome participants Jersey Australia Conference & AGM, from 9am, including morning tea. After the meeting has taken place, the group will be invited to join Peter and Wendy Ness for lunch at Nyowee Jersey Stud situated in neighboring Mt Jagged. The afternoon activity will be a tour of Fresh Field Mushrooms, Middleton. All participants will assemble to celebrate the conference Formal Dinner at McCracken Country Club, Victor Harbor, while we welcome the new Jersey Australia Management Board, and of course guest speakers including– Mr. Ben Hayes, DPI Victoria.

The group will convene again early on Thursday 19th May for a Scenic Regional Tour of Fleurieu Peninsula including visiting the southern areas. Of highlight will be a guided tour of Mundoo Station, Hindmarsh Island, getting as close as possible to the Murray Mouth. We hope to be welcomed abroad the Oscar W Paddle Steamer in Goolwa, and sip local Wine at nearby Ballast Stone Winery in Goolwa. The bus will travel east stopping for lunch in Strathalbyn, a visit to Australia’s second oldest winery in Australia, Bleasdale Winery in Langhorne Creek, and a quick visit to Newman’s Horseradish Farm also

in Langhorne Creek. The beauty of the day will be spending an extra day with new friends, and of course witnessing views of Milang and Clayton to return to accommodation.

We look forward to encountering you in May, at An Encounter with Jerseys!Special thanks to all of our supporting partners, especially our Platinum Sponsors - Central Sires Co-op Ltd & ABS.

South coaSt SharefarmerS welcome Jersey breeders

Brittney Jacob in amongst this year’s calves.

James and Lisa Jacob are looking forward to showing farmers around their 400ha property at Peterborough in June when they host a farm walk coinciding with the annual meeting of the Victorian branch of Jersey Australia. James and Lisa share-farm the property owned by Ronald Irvine. It is within earshot of the sea on Victoria’s south coast, three hours west of Melbourne.

The Jacobs milk 290 Jerseys, 34 crossbreeds and six Holsteins. They supply Warrnambool Butter and Cheese Factory. The property is also the site of the Peterborough wastewater treatment plant, which two years ago established three water-recycling dams among the farm’s 120ha of native bushland. The Jacobs have a 20ha centre pivot ready to irrigate when water flows from the plant.

Lisa laughs that her future mother-in-law didn’t give her enough warning about what to expect when she married James 16 years ago, the son of second-generation Jersey farmer Mark Jacob. James and Lisa have since managed four different properties.

But their current farm is their best, and they’ve settled into roles on the farm. “He feeds ’em and I breed ’em,” Lisa says. She works closely with breeding consultant Amy Wright to improve their Jersey herd. “We like to have big solid cows that can take the conditions down here.” Lisa says. “It can get pretty rough at times. We aim for big spring-of-rib cows with plenty of capacity. And they have always got to have good temperament. Temperament is a big thing here – one bad cow can upset the whole show.”

Lisa says that like all breeders, she wants good udders. She is also breeding for better feet: “I think feet are a big problem in wetter ground.”

The farm uses bulls from the Smethurst family's “Lerida Park”, as well as its own bulls Brookbi, Jace and Country.

Bulls used for insemination this year include Action, Galaxie, Bowtie, Region, Kabalah, Bombardier, Virgil and Surespring.

Lisa says she’s had good results with breeding in the past four years, and will continue to

try to reduce the numbers of cross-breeds and Holsteins in their herd.

One of the Jacobs’ previous farms bred Holsteins. Lisa

says they still have a few as their children – Mick aged 13 and Brittney aged 11 – like them because they are different.

But Lisa prefers Jerseys: “They are so much easier to deal with. You can work with them without having to go and get the tractor all

the time. We wouldn’t go back to Holsteins.” They'd

also prefer not to have Jersey-Holstein crosses:

“They tend to be a little bit flighty.” The farm calves in April-

May and August-September.

Lisa doesn’t come from a farming background, but she became involved with

the Western District Jersey Breeders Club after she registered some heifers with Jersey Australia.

She became friends with WDJBC members, and four years ago joined the club’s committee. She has been president for two years.

The Jacobs have never opened the Peterborough farm before, and James and Lisa hope other farmers will enjoy the visit. “It’s a well set-out farm with great calving sheds, a very easy dairy to work, and with that much land we are never short of grass,” she says. “Everyone has got different ideas about what they want out of a cow. It’s good just to

By michael Porteus.

go and have a look round at other peoples’ cows and say well that bull might work in our herd, or that bull won’t work in our herd. It’s just up to the individual in the end what they actually milk. If everyone can get a look at what’s going on around the place, it works out well.”

And despite her jokes, Lisa says she could never leave farming now. “We are very happy with where we are and what we are doing,” she says. “I couldn’t see us bringing our kids up in the city. They are both very cow-oriented, and love to come and help. Mick helps by getting the cows in, and milking and Brittney helps rear the calves. It’s terrific.”

Without a doubt the highlight from the April ABV release was the performance of Jersey bull SANDBLAST who blasted to the No.1 position on the APR rankings.

Sandblast is a Flowerpower son with added Strength and Capacity from 9 generations of EX and VHC cows. Not only is Sandblast clearly the No.1 APR bull by almost 50 points, he is also the highest Jersey bull in the breed for ASI and Protein Kgs and equal No.1 for Temperament and Likeability.

When you combine this with his positive percentages for both Protein & Fat and his excellent Overall Type

and Mammary scores, he will be one of the highest use Jersey sires in Australia for 2011 with export orders already lining up.

Other highlights from Agri-Gene’s Jersey line-up was the performance of USA sires TBONE and KANOO who are both amongst the Top 10 JPI bulls in the USA.

Tbone added another 1,000 daughters to his already impressive proof and remains one of the highest Type and Production sires available while Kanoo is the No.5 JPI sire and offers an outcross alternative with high Production, good Components and neat Udders.

New sires from the USA to Agri-Gene’s Jersey team include Tower Vue Prime TEQUILA, a big time Type bull who is the No.1 Type and Udder Index bull in the breed and a Genomic Tbone son Gabys Tbone BRANSON who is from the $25,000 Gabys Action Baby EX91 cow and is already being used as a Sire of Sons in the USA.

Farmer favourite Australian sire SPIRITUAL has started to add second crop daughters and remains amongst the Top Australian proven bulls to feature on the ADHIS Good Bulls Guide.

Agri-gene April ABV HigHligHts

Yenolam Freedom Snow is one of the Jacobs Favourite cows in the herd.

In the past 10 years we believe we have been fortunate to have bred 3 elite jersey cows with two being estelles and the other being C Montana Daisy (sUPeRIOR – 94 Points) Reserve Champion IDw 2005.

The estelle family I can trace back to the 1920’s when my late grandfather George McNabb purchased a cow from a Mr w AyRe from weribee for his MAXON JeRsey sTUD. In 1947 when my late parents were married the MAXON stud was split with my parents forming the CAIRNBRAe sTUD and mum’s brother IVAN retaining MAXON next door to our farm. From what I can remember as a child there was always a good estelle in the herd.

In 1974 when brother Jim and Glenda were married the CAIRNBRAe herd was split with Jim forming the GleNBRAe sTUD and in 1976 when JANINe and I were married we became herd managers of CAIRNBRAe.

In recent years the estelle family has become very dominant with 41 estelles listed on the March herd test list.

C Flower’s estelle (sUPeRIOR 92 Points) reigns queen of the herd having been No. 1 AsI Jersey cow Nationally for the past 3 years with an AsI 298. she is easily the best dairy cow I have had the pleasure to milk and own in my lifetime as a dairyfarmer. On her current lactation, which looks like being her highest yield yet, she exceeded 40 litres for the first three months and I don’t think I can remember her ever producing less than 20 litres at any stage of any lactation. she was shown as a 3 year old at the Colac show to be awarded Reserve Champion Jersey but hated the fuss and was retired from the show ring. she has an impressive ACTION 2 year old that has a PI.120 and will classify high when presented. we also have 2 joined TBONe daughters that we haven been genomic tested in CANADA with very high results. she is also usually a good flush cow having given 12

CeleBRITy embryos recently and is currently carrying a Finalist calf. she has 3 sons currently in A.I. Centres under P.T. in MAXAMIllION sired by MAXIMUM at AGRI-GeNe and 2 TBONe sons eNeRGIseR at AGRI-GeNe and esTANBUll at ABs. If they can transmit her milking ability a lot more will be herd of these young sires.

Flowers estelle is a Flowerpower daughter bred from a very good lesTeR cow that also bred another daughter by FlOweRPOweR 91 points and an AsTOUND 90 points.

The other esTelle of prominence is C AlF’s esTelle (eXCelleNT 93 points) who has become highly regarded through her son elTON who this last season was the top selling Jersey sire domestically as well sending semen to many countries around the world.

Alfs estelle has unfortunately been mother of only two natural bred heifer calves in her lifetime, the first being C Duncans esTelle born 1999 by a yearling bull that ran with the heifers.

We at CAIRNBRAE feel privileged to have our Estelle family take part in the GREAT AUSSIE COW FAMILIES.

she went on to score 90 points and breed a daughter by JACe that sold for $6,500 at IDw and score 91 points for ANDRew GAUl in Gippsland.

The other heifer calf by ONTIMe wasn’t born until 2010. luckily she is a cow who has flushed well having recently given 11 A GRADe VANAHleM embryos at 14 years of age. To date we have bred 10 daughters with the oldest 5 all scoreing 90 points at 3 years and has 2 ACTIONs that scored 87 points at 2 years.

The most noteable of her daughters are an AUGUsTUs sold at IDw to R & s Bacon who has had a son enter the seMeX P.T. team and a JACe sister to elTON in our herd that has just completed her 4 year old lactation with 394kg fat. and a PI 116. we have no doubt this young cow will be a future bull mother. she has daughters by MeCCA and NAVARA and embryos due by NAVARA, VAleNTINO and as well carrying a calf by VAleRIAN.

AlFs esTelle currently has 2 TBONe sons in P.T. namingly CAIRBONe at Alta and eDIsON at CeNTRAl sIRes.

Her dam was the best lesTeR cow we had classifying sUPeRIOR 92 points and averaging PI 123 over 10 lactations and had 7 milking daughters 5 scored 90 points, 1 at 91 points and 1 at 93 points. she was bred from a GlANTON ReD DANTe cow.

Both AlFs esTelle AND FlOweRs esTelle trace back to a cow called C MeTeORs esTelle 3 born in 1979 and was the top production in the herd through the 1980’s.

we have been very fortunate to have a family that breeds well to most sire lines.

Four years after they moved north from prime irrigation country in the New South Wales Hunter Valley, John’s River dairy farmers Ken and Margaret Atkins are consolidating their herd and improving their rain-fed pastures.

Ken and Margaret’s Kendale Jer-seys stud in the north of the Manning Valley hosted a farm walk during last year’s Jersey Australia conference held nearby at Wauchope and Port Macqua-rie.

Although both Ken and Margaret come from long-standing Hunter dairy families, they are pleased with their move to the mid north coast, where they lease 95ha and own a further 25ha nearby.

Margaret is the secretary of the Manning District Jersey Cattle Club. Ken also participates in the mid north coast’s Dairy Advancement Group.

The mid-north coast lost more than half of its dairy farms in the aftermath of NSW dairy deregulation.

But farms in the Hastings and Man-ning valleys have rebounded, and the area now produces a record amount of milk.

Members of the dairy advance-ment group say there is a strong future for dairying in their region because of high rainfall, the positive focus of the farmers, and their strategic location between major milk markets in Sydney and Brisbane.

The Atkins milk around 160 cows – half Jerseys and the rest Holsteins and Jersey-Holstein crosses. Ken says milk from his Jerseys can earn up to 10 cents more per litre than Holstein milk.

The farm has well-drained red vol-canic soils. It receives around 1650mm or 65 inches of rain a year.

The pasture-based farm grows 95 per cent of its feed, broadcast planting winter rye grass over summer kikuyu. The Atkins make up to 500 round bales of grass silage each year. They add wheat, canola and mineral pellets to their feed mix.

The Atkins rolling herd average is 7027 litres per cow per year. Total production is 1,075,000 litres a year at 4.3% fat and 3.49%protein.

Ken says they have built up a new herd in their first four years on the new property.

“They probably don’t milk as much per cow as they do in the Hunter, but you have to look at both sides of your ledger,” he says.

“We don’t ever cultivate any land. It’s cheap and simple. I do sod-seeding which is minimum till.

“In a lot of the paddocks later in the season when it cools off – when there’s a lot of wet weather about – you can just throw it on.”

Tight scheduling of grazing is vital. Ken works a nine-to-fourteen day rotation, depending on how the season is going.

The farm uses a bull with its heifers. It inseminates milking cows, mostly with north American semen.

“I want a balanced group,” Ken says. “We want good udders, good feet and legs, and good capacity.

bulls that have a little bit more empha-sis on type.

“We’re here to make money out of milk, not out of show ribbons.

“But we want no-fuss, trouble-free cows, and you’ll get that from show cows.”

The farm calves year round, with a peak in the autumn. It rears its own calves.

“We’ve got a lot of calves on a small area, and I do notice that if you

don’t drench them regularly, they’ll fall back,” Ken says.

“It’s just management – it’s a big job. We try to calve them in at two to 2.5 years of age, and to do that you’ve got to keep them growing.”

Ken says that when he farmed in the Hunter, he found that Jerseys handled the heat better.

“Here, the humidity is more signifi-cant than the heat. We don’t get as hot as the Hunter, but it’s probably just as hard on the cows.”

He says the future depends on what happens with milk prices, and on costs such as electricity.

But he wants to increase soil fertil-ity by tweaking the calcium, magne-sium and phosphorus levels shown in the farm’s soil tests.

He says Margaret did a lot of work behind the national Jersey event last year, but it was rewarding.

“Everyone had a great time,” Ken says. “We got a lot of good feedback, and we hope it’s raised the profile of the herd.”

A team including vision-impaired dairy farmer and Jersey Breeder Jason Bake is trekking the Kokoda Trail this year to show that failing eyesight doesn’t end dreams.

Jason has lost 93 per cent of his vision through the degenerative eye condition retinitis pigmentosa.

But he has a keen interest in Australian military his-tory, and has long dreamed of trekking through the New Guinea highlands where Australian soldiers stopped a Japanese advance during World War II.

“Diminishing sight will make the challenge tough-er, but now I want to do it more than ever,” Jason says.

Jason says his brother-in-law, Coffs Harbour City Council asset manager Craig Smith, has turned the dream into and event called Blind Courage which will trek the trail in June to raise money for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT.

Blind Courage is seeking sponsorship and donations for its trek at its website www.blindcourage.net.

The Blind Courage team also includes Armidale Ab-original liaison officer Steve Widders, who has lost 95 per cent of his sight to cone dystrophy.

The 10-day trek begins on June 3 at Owers Corner, 40 km north-east of Port Moresby. The team is practicing techniques for the 96km trek which crosses many water-courses and climbs ridg-es up to 2000m.

These techniques in-clude Craig walking a few steps ahead of Jason with an orange fluorescent gaiter on his left foot, warning Jason about difficult footholds and obstacles such as tree roots.

Jason says he’ll apply similar strategies on the trek to “cope and make the best of the situation” that he uses to farm with a vision impairment.

“You have to make changes to adapt to the condi-tions,” he says.

Adventure specialist Dion Taylor of trek facilitators Kokoda Spirit says most days of the Blind Courage journey involve steep climbs.

Rapid re-growth of highland rainforest can obscure the track. Wet weather will increase difficulties – and it often rains in the tropical highlands.

Dion says crossing watercourses can be the most daunting part of the journey.

“You can sometimes hear the thunder of fast-flow-ing highland rapids 90 minutes before you get to a crossing,” he says.

There are single-log crossings over some rapids, and the group’s local guides will wade through creeks to install guide ropes.

The Blind Courage team will be assisted by up to 20 New Guineans, and will camp each night at differ-ent highland villages.

Dion knows some highlanders well from his 20 trips along the track.

“They are fantastic – just like the fuzzy-wuzzy angels who helped Australian soldiers during World War II,” he says.

Hi All, hope you all had a very Happy Easter.Registrations - When I last wrote we were hoping achieve 14,000 registrations for the 2010-2011 year, well we did and more 14,575. That’s 20% more than the previous year! Of course that puts the pressure on for this year but as I write we are already 2,000 up for the same time last year. Keep them rolling in.We’re thinking of youQueensland: Floods, clean up, more floods - feels like it will never end, but hang in there.Victoria has had rain (Hallelujah!), then locusts, then floodsNew South Wales has had floodsBut hey, everyone just says “at least we haven’t had it as bad as Queensland” - we are continuing to think of you and hope you are recovering well.Ever considered keeping your Jersey account in Credit?Did you know that you can pre-pay your registrations so that you are only

ever charged the base rate even if the animals are 6+ months when they reach the office. A number of Members do it and I thought everyone knew about it until I was talking to someone who had never heard of it. So for all you disorganised people out there, give it some thought.Jersey Sales attracting a lot of attention (Read “money”)I was lucky enough to get along to The Great Western Spectacular and the Warrawee Park Dispersal Sale and wow you should have seen the bidding.Great Western Results• J & G Carson 1 calved heifer $1900,

30 springing heifers $1970 ave• A & L Evans 3 calved heifers $ 2600

ave, 52 springing heifers $2438 ave• Reid & Egan 4 calved heifers $1850

ave, 3 springing heifers $1467 ave• Cockerell family 1 heifer $1600• Top price was lot 70 at $3900.• Warrawee Park average $2,516 per

animal

Makes registering Jerseys pretty attractive doesn’t it?Anyway I hope you note that the tone of this is a lot calmer than the last issue. This is due to several factors. We’ve finished the Elders Export registrations, we’ve caught up with the “Work Waiting” folder, my in-tray has lightened considerably (although there is a crack right down the centre of it from when it was overloaded), and saving the best for last - I’m taking the remainder of the Easter Week off. Oh, and the weather is beautiful. Have fun!Catch ya’Lorraine

OFFICE MATTERS By Office Manager Lorraine Keating

Dear wws Friends,

Happy New year! As we usher in 2011, world wide sires is proud and excited to commemorate our 40th anniversary.

In 1971, Bill Clark founded world wide sires, Inc. with the goal of providing quality Us genetics and superior service to dairy producers around the globe. Forty years later, the world wide sires’ family continues to strive towards this goal in over 70 countries throughout europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Middle east.

To help celebrate wws’ 40th anniversary, our advertising team is working with the Australian Jersey Journal magazine to produce a special feature that will be published in the June/July 2011 issue. This feature will recognize some of the people and bulls that have contributed to the international growth and development of world wide sires through the years.

world wide sires seek to encourage Australian Jersey Breeders to help showcase wws progeny in that issue. For those who participate, world wide sires is offering 5 free doses of wws semen for 1/2 page or less and 10 free doses for a full page. The bulls offered as incentives are eClIPses, FANTOM, VAleNTINO and GOVeRNOR (bulls are subject to change based upon availability).
