Are you having an eventful summer? I sure hope so; and if not, you only have yourself to blame because with so many events on deck there are a plethora of things to do and see. summer is always a very busy season for urban trendsetters as we are the media and outreach sponsor

for some of Ohio’s greatest events. We are especially excited about the return of the annual African American Male Wellness Walk hosted by John gregory and the team at national Center of urban solutions (nCus).

As an original founding committee member of this event, I have had the pleasure of watching our attendance grow from 500 walkers and participants to over 5,000. Last year over 500 men received various free health screenings. The AAMWW is the first and only walk of its kind and size in the nation. Columbus truly has a signature event that it can be proud of.

I applaud John gregory and his staff for their vision and commitment to the health and wellness of African American men. the main reason for the AAMWW is simple; to encourage men to go to the doctor and get a wellness check up. It is apparent that initiative is working. As a matter of fact there was an instance where a man who thought he was feeling quite normal participated in the provided free testing and was actually taken immediately to the hospital because of poor test results. this event has saved lives. In my opinion if “the Walk” saves one life per year, it has done what it was designed to do.

Please join urban trendsetters for the AAMWW this year. You are in for a health and wellness treat. For more information on the Walk and events scheduled for the day check out page 17 of this month’s issue.

In conjunction with the AAMWW, urban trendsetters is launching the uts Fit Club. Participants of the uts Fit Club “Fit & Trendy” will have the opportunity to join a social network of individuals who have made a commitment to get fit! Membership to the Fit & trendy Fit Club is Free and open to everyone.

We want you to upload and share your before and after photos, videos, recipes, fit tips and success stories with us. “Fit & trendy” is in partnership with beach body, the producers of the number one at home videos in the country such as P90X, Insanity, Hip Hop Abs, turbo Jam and more. to register log onto www.urbantrendsetters.com and click the Join Fit Club link today.

Well, if that is not enough - there is much more. urban trendsetters is also the proud media sponsor for the I’m every Woman Expo, Who’s Who Publishing Networking and Book Launch, The Columbus Jazz & Soul Food Festival and the Black Pages Profit Factor. stop by and visit our booths at all of these great events. Columbus, Ohio - Who’s Who Publishing Company, the nation’s largest annual directory publisher focusing on the African-American market, enthusiastically announces Janet e. Jackson, president and chief executive officer of United Way of Central Ohio, as the foreword writer for the ninth edition of Who’s Who In black Columbus®.

Jackson’s goal is to help people achieve the building blocks of a good

life: a quality education that leads to a productive career, income that can support a family through retirement, good health and a safe place to live. she is a well-known advocate for diversity and inclusion, who has broken barriers by becoming the first woman and African American to head united Way of Central Ohio, the first woman to serve as Columbus city attorney, and the first African American to be elected to that office. She was also the first African-American female judge in Franklin County history.

Prior to joining united Way, Jackson served six years as Columbus city attorney - the city’s chief legal advisor. before her appointment as city attorney, she served nearly 10 years as a Franklin County Municipal Court judge.

Jackson earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Wittenberg university and a law degree from the national Law Center at george Washington

university in Washington, d.C. upon graduation, she served as an assistant attorney general for the state of Ohio. during her nearly 10 years with the attorney general’s office, she directed three divisions: Crime Victims’ Compensation, Workers’ Compensation and Civil rights.

With such a notable career, it is no surprise that Jackson has received numerous honors and awards, including the Woman of Achievement Award from the YWCA of Columbus and the dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award from the Columbus education Association. she was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame in 2001 and serves as vice chair of the Central Ohio Workforce Investment board. Carter d. Womack, associate publisher for the Who’s Who Columbus market says, “We are very pleased to have the support of Janet e. Jackson. We honor her talent and continued devotion to diversity and community outreach.”

“I am honored to write the foreword to this important book,” said Jackson. “Who’s Who In black Columbus® provides a great service by recognizing so many engaged members of our African-American community. It is also a great source of information that I refer to regularly.”

Ohio Attorney general Mike deWine today sent letters to Ohio secretary of state Jon Husted and the committee representing the petitioners rejecting the summary language for the proposed referendum on the election reform bill, Am. sub. H.b. 194.

The Attorney General’s Office’s explicit statutory duty is to determine whether the submitted summary “is a fair and truthful statement of the measure to be referred.”

Attorney general deWine’s letter rejected the summary for two reasons: because it contains statements that are not accurate, and it does not fairly and truthfully describe the matter being referred.

the proposed summary language submitted contains statements that are not accurate. these statements fall into two categories: they either cite statutory

or administrative code provisions that do not exist or contain misstatements of law. some of the petitioners’ citing of administrative code that does not exist occurred in the following examples:

In Paragraph 3 of the summary, which addresses r.C. 3517.01(b)(25), the summary reads in pertinent part: “the amendment of r.C. 3517.01 . . . supersedes and makes void and of no further effect in the Ohio Administrative Code rules that became effective January 7, 2011 (Ohio Admin. Code section 111-13-05) . . .” However, Ohio Admin. Code section 111-13-05 is not a valid citation. the intended citation was probably 111-3-05. this same error is repeated as it relates to section 7 of the bill.

Paragraph 14 of the summary, which addresses absentee voter requirements, cites to “r.C. 3509.031(b)(1)(5)(b)”. However, this sub-section of the

revised Code does not exist. the intended citation was probably r.C. 3509.031 (b)(5)(b).

An example of one of the misstatements of current law by the petitioners can be found in Paragraph 10, bullet point 12, of the summary stating that Am. sub. H.b. 194 will “eliminate a provision of current law that permits such an individual’s provisional ballot to be counted if the election officials determine that the individual is eligible to vote.”

under both current law and the law as amended by Am. sub. H.b. 194, “election official” is a statutorily defined term. It includes the secretary of state, employees of the secretary of state’s division of elections, members of a local board of elections, the director and deputy director of a local board of elections, and employees of the board of elections. Current law specifies that only the members of the board of elections can validate a provisional ballot. r.C. 3505.183.

therefore it is misleading to claim that “current law … permits such an individual’s provisional ballot to be counted if the election officials

determine that the individual is eligible to vote.” A current statement of the law would be that current law permits such an individual’s provisional ballot to be counted if the members of the board of elections determine the individual is eligible to vote.

Also, because Am. sub. H.b. 194 does not appropriate money, the only matters upon which a referendum can be held are either the law as a whole or entire sections of the law. In this case, petitioners submitted certain portions of sections of the law, rather than the section of law in its entirety. the petitioners properly characterized sections 5, 6 and 8. However, the summaries of sections 1 and 2 of Am. Sub H.B. 194 only summarized specific portions of sections 1 and 2 and were not fair and truthful in that they did not summarize everything included in sections 1 and 2. For example, it did not inform potential signers about changes related to accepting u.s. Passports as forms of identity.

the petitioners have the option to start the process over or challenge the failure to certify in the Ohio supreme Court.

WAsHIngtOn (July 12, 2011) -- President barack Obama collected $86 million combined for his re-election campaign and the democratic party during the past three months, giving him a large fundraising advantage over the Republican field seeking to challenge

him in 2012.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in a video posted early Wednesday that it raised more than $47 million and the democratic national Committee brought in more than $38 million through the end of June, building a foundation for advertising and get-out-the-vote efforts in next year’s election. Obama’s team had set a public goal of $60 million combined.

As expected, the fundraising totals outpace republicans, who have collectively raised about $35 million so far, although some candidates have yet to release their results. At the same time in 2007, 10 gOP presidential hopefuls had raised more than $118 million, according to the Center for responsive Politics.

Former Massachusetts gov. Mitt Romney leads the GOP field in fundraising, pulling in more than $18 million during the past three months. An independent fundraising group supporting romney’s presidential bid has raised $12 million this year.

Following romney, former Minnesota gov. tim Pawlenty collected $4.2 million and former utah gov. Jon Huntsman brought in $4.1 million, with about half coming from his personal wealth. Minnesota rep. Michele bachmann, a tea party favorite, has not yet released her fundraising totals.

Obama’s advisers have told donors privately they hope to match or exceed the $750 million they raised in 2008, anticipating a stiff challenge from republicans amid

rocky economic conditions. Obama has acknowledged he will need to re-energize supporters who were inspired by his message of hope and change three years ago but may be discouraged by the economy and the pace of change.

“We have reason to be proud of what we’ve built so far but it’s going to get tougher from here,” Messina said in the video, estimating outside spending by gOP groups could exceed $500 million.

Messina said more than 550,000 people donated money to the campaign during the first three months, a large increase from about 180,000 donors to Obama during the first half of 2007. The campaign

Over the last several years, I have been involved in various aspects of the solar industry, from funding advanced solar technology research and developing solar systems for schools to funding leasing programs to make solar affordable for home owners, to finally starting a solar and green summer camp for kids. Additionally, I have attended many conferences and made quite a few presentations advocating the importance that eco-entrepreneurs will have on our new green economy.

I have attended these conferences with as little as 200 people and as many as 20,000. Along the way I have noticed an alarming trend, which is the

lack of representation by the African American community, specifically that of the African American entrepreneur.

Van Jones, author of the green Collar economy and founder of green For All, a national ngO dedicated to building an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty, had this to say, “Our success and survival as a species is largely and directly tied to the new eco-entrepreneurs - and the success and survival of their enterprises.” so I ask you, where is the African American entrepreneur?

I am sure that I am not the only one who notices that the African American community is not taking a leading

the California Citizens redistricting Commission (CCrC) will be voting to release the final iteration of the redistricting maps this week. these maps are supposed to reflect the state’s demographic shifts in the state’s population after the reapportionment of state and congressional legislative seats following the 2010 Census.

As far as the congressional seats go, the goal of the collective African American community statewide is to hold on to what it has, despite a population that is decline. blacks in California, according to the 2010 Census, represent 6.2% of the state’s population, or 2.3 million (out of 37 million residents) who identify themselves as being of African American descent. that is down from

being 7.65% of the state’s population after the 2010 Census.

California’s black population is the largest African American population in the west, and the fifth largest in the nation. Of California’s 53 congressional districts, African Americans hold four, or 7.5% of the seats (proportional to its percentage in the 2000 Census population). the CCrC now claim that blacks are OVer represented in the state’s Congressional delegation. their mindset is being reflected in the maps released.

The latest float of the CCRC’s district maps, seats historically held by African American representatives, commonly referred to as “the bLACK

seats,” have either fewer blacks in those districts making it much more difficult to continue the legacy of black representation. In the most dramatic scenario, two of the seats are merged into one, creating a majority black district, but losing a “black” seat in the process. relegating the statewide African American community to three seats, southern California…more specifically Black Los Angeles is set to take the hit. now one of the most progressive black populations in the nation finds itself on the verge of being disenfranchised. some people think we, the African American community, are being a little too sensitive. Huh?

Well, how should we feel about it? Political representation that we’ve fought (and died for) is about to be taken away on questionable population premises that include undocumented aliens and historical gerrymandering. With its population in decline, CCrC rationalization is stating that the emerging Latino and Asian populations have grown and has put the squeeze on black representation. I don’t necessarily buy that, for a number of reasons. black population hasn’t declined that much. 2020, the seat may be gone for sure, but blacks have to retain political power to address to dramatic political interests at hand, namely unemployment and reentry, which I wouldn’t trust anybody else to handle. For those reasons alone, congressional representation must be retained. I’m more inclined to think it’s a power grab that blacks in the state may never recover from.

the CCrC is playing with our community’s representation over a one percent differential in population percentage. taking black Congressional representatives would take us from four to three, or 5.6% of the state’s congressional representation. so they would rather us be underrepresented by one percent (5.6%) than

overrepresented by one percent (at 7.5%). If population parity is the play, why does the CCrC still have over 60% of the congressional seats represented by white person when they are only 40.1% of the state’s population? I’ll tell you way, because of the way that the lines are drawn and destiny for which majorities, namely blacks and Latinos are clustered in urban areas. that’s the fallacy of the population parity argument. Whites can represent other people, but other people can’t represent whites. so, the “minority seats” which represent now represent a majority of the state’s population. the commission is playing black and Latino political interests against each other and marginalizing Asian political interests in favor of the historical political status quo. We must call this out or it will continue.

It’s power that the black community cannot afford to concede. And so the commission must know the level of alarm our community has for its district maps and encourage them to change them. Frederick douglass’ words never have rang truer;

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has and it never will.”

If the Los Angeles black community doesn’t demand the commission to retain black political representation in Congress, it will concede black political representation in Congress.

It is as simple as that. that’s how power shifts from one group to the next.

(reuters Health) - black nursing home residents are more likely than white residents to develop blisters and sores that can eventually lead to muscle and bone damage, according to a new study.

The findings suggest the disparities are mostly the result of differences in care between homes with predominantly black or white patients -- and not that individual nursing homes are necessarily providing better care to whites than

blacks, researchers said.

“In general, nursing homes are lacking appropriate resources,” said study author Yue Li, from the university of Iowa in Iowa City. In homes with more black patients, “the problems are particularly pronounced.”

For preventing the blisters and sores, known as pressure ulcers, having enough nurses to keep a close watch on patients may be particularly important, according to the researchers.

these sores generally develop in patients who are bedridden or confined to a wheelchair. they happen when the same patch of skin is always exposed to too much pressure and the tissue begins to break down because it doesn’t get enough blood. If they aren’t treated, pressure ulcers can deepen and cause damage to bones and muscles.

Li said that previous studies have

suggested black residents in nursing homes get more pressure ulcers than white residents. but he and his colleagues wondered if recent efforts at improving the quality of care in nursing homes, led by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid services, did anything to address that disparity.

From 2003 to 2008, they followed cases of pressure ulcers that were reported at more than 12,000 nursing homes in the u.s., looking at a sample of about 2.5 million patients who were considered to be at high risk for the sores.

Over that time, the overall rate of pressure ulcers decreased in those patients. However, black residents remained more likely to get sores than white residents.

the chance of having a pressure ulcer fell from about 17 percent to 15 percent in black residents between 2003 and 2008,

education is the key to breaking black men and youths out of a vicious cycle of crime and unemployment, African-American leaders said thursday at the close of the annual nAACP convention.

the plight of black males, which have above average rates of joblessness, incarceration, HIV infection and lower rates of educational achievement, was one of the themes of the six-day convention, which was attended

by more than 5,000 members of the national Association for the Advancement of Colored People. “We are losing a generation of our children,” said sandre swanson, who heads the California Assembly’s select Committee on the state of boys and Men of Color, at a panel discussion. “these young men need help and to know we care.”

Panelists noted that the problem originated with the loss of manufacturing jobs that minorities relied on for decades. Moreover, government jobs, which employ 21 percent of blacks, are also now shrinking with government cutbacks, political analyst Jamal simmons said. the result is that minority youth have turned increasingly to crime.

About 10 percent of black men born in the 1940s have served time in prison during their lives, said Yale university law professor James Foreman Jr. that figure doubles for black men born in the 1960s. African-American males now comprise 40 percent of the

nation’s prison population. swanson noted that 70 percent of parolees return to prison because they are paroled to isolated communities where there are few jobs, or schooling or training opportunities. “We have to get as much education in front of them as we can,” he said, adding that he is sponsoring a bill to get community college classes in prisons. “the most successful tool against recidivism is education.”

the national unemployment rate in July for black males is 17.9 percent, as compared to 8.1 percent for white males and 11.9 percent for Hispanic males. For college-educated black males, the figure drops to 6.5 percent, which is still higher than the 2.9 percent rate for college-educated whites.

Foreman, who noted that the overwhelming majority of prison inmates are high school dropouts, said that besides pushing black students to graduate, the quality of urban schools must be improved in order to give

youths the skills they need in today’s high-tech job market.

Half of black high school students do not have access to advanced level courses, such as calculus, physics and advanced placement english, he said. even if students do not go on to college, they need higher level courses to develop essential critical thinking skills. “the employment question is fundamental,” he said. “there are no more jobs on the line at the Ford plant. those kids have to be educated to go to college, even if they don’t go to college.” swanson said he is also working with labor unions to offer more apprenticeships to minority youth and to employ more ex-felons.

simmons urged the audience to mentor youth, saying the successful people he knows credit one person in their lives who encouraged them to pursue their aspirations. “the doors of opportunity are open to black people but it can still be challenging to go through them,” he said.

Central Ohio’s largest African-American health event of the summer is upon us. this year the African-American Male Wellness Walk (AAMWW) will be celebrating its seventh year. Last year’s Walk saw over 5,000 participants and more than 500 men screened. “We have many men who now come out annually and bring their families to participate with them. One of the things that really excited me about the 2010 Walk was not only the tremendous amount of men that we were able to screen, but also the fact that last year showed a significant improvement in the “vital numbers” and “indicators” surrounding chronic health issues of the men screened. this indicates that we are having an impact on those in attendance” said Committee member, Christina Hutchins. “Many special and exciting activities are also on the horizon for this year’s life-saving event. We will be having the ever popular Kid’s Walk and we would like to exceed last year’s 200+ free dental and vision screenings that were provided in the Youth Pavilion. this year the Walk will also host a women’s screening area, because healthy men are usually part of healthy families.”

the 2010 annual reception gala brought together over 30 Central Ohio African-American

Physicians who were honored for their service to our community. the 2011 Walk is proud to honor the hard work and dedication of African American nurses. nurses are often the unsung heroes in the African-American health community and medical community at large. every year Committee member, Patty Mellman, of the Central Ohio diabetes Association coordinates the free health screenings to hundreds of men who are “at risk” for chronic illnesses. However, these life-saving efforts would not be possible if it were not for the dozens of professional nurses who get up at 5:00 am and volunteer their services for this worthy cause. nominations are currently being accepted for this honor and anyone wishing to nominate an African-American nurse who has shown outstanding care and commitment to the community can contact AAMWW Committee member, Jacob King, by calling (614) 857-1811 or by contacting [email protected].

the 2011 celebration will also include

afternoon with festivities in the Mt. Vernon Plaza Focal Point. the African-American Male Wellness Walk has expand and joined with and long-time businessman, Pastor Melvin stewart and other neighborhood entrepreneurs and community leaders as the Mt. Vernon Plaza commemorates its 35th Anniversary. built in 1978, the 26 acre project, which boasts a 500 seat amphitheater, 376 residential units and over 60,000 square feet of commercial business space was the first time in Columbus history that African-Americans organized and built a large scale residential and commercial development. Hailed by the december 1978 black enterprise magazine as an area of might and signal of accomplishment for the community, the september 1978 dedication was visited by then President, Jimmy Carter who acknowledged it as a tribute to the work of the people of the community. Pastor stewart hopes that the celebration will draw both young and old from all across Central Ohio. the afternoon Plaza activities will offer many activities including spotlighting area businesses and entrepreneurs and the destiny center will be giving away

Is the latest person following you on twitter or friending you on Facebook actually a debt collector in disguise?

that could very well be the case if you’re behind on your bills.

As debt collectors step up their efforts to collect money, the social

media landscape is becoming the latest battleground in the war between cash-strapped consumers and persistent creditors.

At issue are several murky legal questions, such as: When is it acceptable for debt collectors to track someone down or contact him or

her through social networking sites, including Facebook or Myspace? And how much information, if any, can a debt collector reveal about a debtor to that person’s online friends and social networking acquaintances?

some debt collectors have reportedly harassed people on Facebook, trying to get them to pay debts that were supposedly owed. Other creditors and third-party debt collectors have allegedly contacted consumers’ friends and family members online in an attempt to embarrass the debtors. All these actions are illegal and prohibited by the Fair debt Collections Practices Act.

“they’re using Facebook because it adds that extra shock value. the more shocking, the more harassing, the more outrageous, the more these debt co llectors get paid,” Florida attorney bill Howard recently told

MsnbC.com.

“What makes it so dangerous is you can contact somebody’s family and friends very quickly and very easily, and you can set off a domino effect of panic that can be devastating,” says Howard, who is head of the consumer protection division at the law firm of Morgan & Morgan.

What is legal, however, is for a debt collector to use information gleaned from social networking sites in order to reach you for the purposes of collecting a debt. this doesn’t mean the debt collector can misrepresent himself or pose as a friend in order to connect with you online at Facebook or other sites. that’s in violation of federal law.

but it is perfectly acceptable, legal experts say, for debt collectors to

strongest church attendance and affliciation amongst all ethnicities in the united states. According to the Pew Forum 2007 survey, people of black ethnicity were most likely to be part of a formal religion, with 85% being Christians. However, according to the barna research group, a Christian research firm based in Ventura, Calif., more than 90% of American men believe in god, and 5 out of 6 call themselves Christian. but only 2 out of 6 attend church on any given sunday. this means that in America, 60% of church attendees are women.

black women overwhelmingly outnumber black men in regular church attendance. While black men may believe in god, in most cases it ends with belief. If single black women are attending church regularly and following the guidelines that the church has put in place and the black men are not, what does this say about the future of the black family?

Our focus is to open our doors, arms and hearts to understand the complex sociological and psychological factors that prohibit African American men

from being consistent churchgoers, better fathers, less abusive spouses and better members of society. As a religious leader in the African American community for the past twenty years, we take our position as a moral authority very seriously. nbCI believes that the first step for our African American brothers is to return to church - atoning for their sins and reestablishing their relationship with god through Christ. Over the next ten years we will develop comprehensive ministries to sustain this initiative and commit African American men to the path of righteousness.

We invite you to encourage our African American men to join us as we reunite as a whole on sunday, september 25th, 2011 - welcoming black men back to church for the first of many Sundays.

the national black Church Initiative (nbCI) is a faith-based coalition of 34,000 churches comprised of 15 denominations and 15.7 million African Americans is committed to bringing African American men back to church. Visit their website at www.naltblackchurch.com.

has actively courted small donors, hoping to show that the president is in a good position for the 2012 campaign and capable of generating broad financial support.

About 98 percent of the donors gave $250 or less. Messina said the average donation was about $69.

Obama broke his previous fundraising record of $33.1 million during the same quarter in 2007 and surpassed finance efforts by his predecessors. President george W. bush launched his re-election bid in mid-May 2003 and raised $34.4 million through June 2003. In his first complete fundraising quarter, bush raised another $50 million, bringing his total to nearly $85 million by the end of september 2003.

Obama’s team had said it hoped to collect a combined $60 million for the campaign and the dnC for the three-month fundraising period that ended June 30. Obama opened his re-election campaign in early April and his advisers said the initial

fundraising efforts were crucial to building a strong campaign.

Messina said the money is building the campaign’s ground game more than a year before election day, saying the campaign has “more grassroots support at this point in the process than any campaign in political history.” Obama’s team has opened 60 field offices across the nation and held more than 31,000 face-to-face meetings with volunteers.

Campaign finance reports are due Friday, and Messina estimated the Obama campaign’s report would exceed 15,000 pages.

Obama has held dozens of fundraisers for his campaign and the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising account set up by the dnC and Obama’s campaign. At Victory Fund events, the first $5,000 of a donor’s contribution goes to the presidential campaign and the remainder goes to the dnC, up to a maximum of $30,800 a year.

use social media platforms to locate you, as long as they adhere to the FdCPA.

What about writing on someone’s Facebook wall -- where others could see the message? experts say that would be deemed inappropriate and illegal. but how about sending you a direct message on Facebook or twitter? that may be within the law.

because these issues aren’t always so cut-and-dried, the Federal trade Commission (FtC) in late April 2011 held a panel on the topic. the FtC panel, called “debt Collection 2.0: Protecting Consumers as technologies Change,” was designed to examine the practices of debt collectors in a modern era of social networking.

FTC officials haven’t yet issued any definitive guidance on the matter, beyond asserting that debt collectors are required to adhere to the FdCPA both online and offline.

still, at the very least, debt collectors’ stepped up use of social media is raising new questions about what’s legal and what’s not. It’s also becoming a thorny area for consumers to navigate, especially since 61percent of all Americans over the age of 12 -- including a huge percentage of blacks in the u.s - use social networking sites. African-Americans represent more than 25% of all users on twitter alone.

ultimately, it will be up to federal and state authorities to determine when debt collectors go too far using social media.

Until then, here are five steps you can take to protect yourself from overzealous debt collectors - including those who contact you or your friends and family online.

1. don’t ‘bling, bling’ If You Claim to be broke

so you just posted Internet photos of your recent trip to Aruba, or pictures of yourself looking sharp in a nice new suit, huh? such information suggests to debt collectors that you’re living large, and it makes it far less likely that they’ll believe your claims of being broke.

even worse, the information you share publicly online may be used

as ammunition against you, if things really get nasty and you wind up in court over a debt. (If you do get a notice to appear in court, read these tips on how to handle debt collectors, including why you should always answer a court summons).

2. stop revealing tMI -- About You and Family We’ve all been guilty of sharing too much information from time to time. but when you do it online, and debt collectors are trying to find you, it’s like you’ve left them a trail of breadcrumbs leading right to your door.

While ducking your creditors isn’t a solution to your financial mess, if you’re not ready to pay what you owe or negotiate a payment plan, it’s sometimes best to lay low. You can’t do that, though, if you’re constantly broadcasting your whereabouts on Foursquare or telling the world (via your online posts) about the date, time and exact hotel location of your upcoming family reunion in Virginia beach.

3. Know Your rights bill collectors are not permitted to harass, threaten, intimidate or try to embarrass you into paying a debt. If they do any of these things, they are violating the FdCPA. read up on your consumer rights and the 10 areas of protection :http://creditcarddebt2010.com/2010/02/day-9-educate-yourself-about-your-legal-rights-part-2/ you have under the Fair debt Collection Practices Act. 4. Complain About Abusive Practices If a debt collector harasses you, threatens you or otherwise breaks the FdCPA or your state laws, don’t hesitate to report them to authorities immediately. File a complaint with the better business bureau and with the FtC.

5. get Help With debt relief Finally, if you find yourself constantly struggling with bills, make a plan to become debt free so you can be rid of aggressive debt collectors once and for all. Follow these tips to get out of debt, or seek guidance from the better business bureau’s free online program

while in white residents it dropped from 11 percent to 10 percent.

When Li and his colleagues looked more closely at differences between nursing homes, they found that both black and white residents were more likely to get a pressure ulcer at homes that had a higher percentage of black residents than at those that were almost all white.

that could be due to a number of reasons, said nancy bergstrom, who co-wrote an editorial accompanying the study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. For example, nursing homes with more black patients might not be as well funded, or they may not have enough staff.

she said that the amount of time nurses spend with patients, and how well those nurses know the procedures for preventing sores -- including making sure patients in bed are frequently moved around to redistribute their weight -- are key to better outcomes.

While some nursing homes have great nurses that stay on for years, others have very high rates of turnover, she explained.

“time of staff and training of staff and staff stability in nursing facilities...are very pivotal to improving care,”

bergstrom, of the university of texas Health science Center in Houston, told reuters Health. “It’s hard to set standards and have good care if there’s somebody new all the time.”

differences between black and white nursing home residents have also been reported when it comes to vaccinations, pain treatment and end-of-life care, Li said.

“For nursing home patients, the disparities are widespread,” he told reuters Health. “Pressure ulcers are only one of the important outcomes.”

some differences could be the result of patients’ conditions when they come into the nursing home, bergstrom added. For example, more black patients may be admitted with diabetes, which makes other complications more likely.

Li suggested that rather than just focusing on general improvements in all nursing homes, policymakers should look at how to cut down on disparities between homes.

One strategy, he said, could be rewarding particular facilities that show a lot of improvement in care, even if they still don’t have as good a record as others.

A long-awaited memorial for Atlanta’s most famous native son and the movement he led opens later this month on the national Mall in Washington.Jacquelyn Martin, AP this month the Martin Luther King Jr. national Memorial opens on the national Mall in Washington. The official dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial will take place on Aug. 28, putting the renowned civil rights leader in the pantheon of national heroes previously reserved for presidents.

the four-acre site on the northwest corner of the tidal basin adjacent to the roosevelt Memorial is designed to create a visual “line of leadership” from the Lincoln Memorial to the Jefferson Memorial.

Here in Atlanta, institutions deeply linked to King will join the celebrations, hosting a local tribute and sending bus loads of celebrants to Washington.

the memorial was initially proposed in the early 1980s and pushed by a small group members from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., which King was a member. King’s widow, Coretta, and others joined the crusade, and the project was approved in 1998. the memorial’s address is 1964 Independence Ave. -- a reference to

the Civil rights Act of 1964.

the dedication coincides with the 48th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, which King led in 1963. It was the occasion for his acclaimed “I Have a dream” speech.

Locally, Morehouse College, King’s alma mater, has been at the forefront of continuing King’s legacy. the college will host a musical tribute culminating the dedication week events. On Aug. 6, the college will host a roundtable discussion on King’s life at 5 p.m. in William H. danford Chapel.

the AJC sat down with Morehouse College President robert M. Franklin to discuss the memorial’s significance.

Q: What was Morehouse’s role in getting the memorial built?

A: We were supporters of u.s. rep. John Conyers’ bill to establish the national King day holiday. After that members of the school’s trustee board, including [former Atlanta Mayor] Maynard Jackson, began quietly lobbying Congress members on the importance of this effort. the college has also been supportive of Coretta’s leadership as she sought to carry this forward. Our role has been behind-the-scenes influence and advocacy.

Q: How is Morehouse preparing the next generation of leaders?

A: On our campus we have monuments of dr. King and [former Morehouse President] dr. benjamin e. Mays, one of dr. King’s greatest inspirations. We use these monuments as sort of sacred symbols to inspire men as to what they can become. We also talk about the five “wells,” which every student here strives to be: well read, well spoken, well traveled, well dressed and well balanced. We think dr. King embodied these five wells and that’s what made him a renaissance man with a social conscience. College education should not only promote one’s own economic success, but should also advance the entire community, and we try to do that from day one.

Q: What is left to do to fulfill King’s legacy?

A: First we have to celebrate this extraordinary achievement. the hundreds of years of struggle for racial

justice, for eradicating slavery and Jim Crow, they worked, they won, and this monument is kind of a trophy for the winners. It is also important to protect the gains and achievements and to focus on the very sobering realities and the need to close the disparity gaps between the races. One thing dr. King kept pointing us to is that this must become an international movement. King was a globalist, and Americans are slowly moving to embrace the world, but not nearly quickly enough.

About the memorialVisitors will enter through an opening in a boulder, called the “Mountain of despair,” meant to symbolize the civil rights struggle.

the memorial is designed as a full sensory experience with several passages taken from King’s sermons and speeches, water and stone landscaping and King’s appearance hewn from granite in the “stone of Hope.”

the memorial does not include King’s well-known dream speech, but other lesser known works.

starting its eighteenth year, tHe guY HAnKs & MArVIn MILLer sCreenWrItIng PrOgrAM aka the Cosby Program, will be accepting applications from July 15th to september 15, 2011. this program was established by drs. bill and Camille Cosby at the university of southern California’s school of Cinematic Arts. Unaffiliated with USC, the goal of the Hanks-Miller Program is to develop the pool of qualified African-American writers in the entertainment industry.

this program meets twice a week for 15-weeks beginning February 2012. It is

designed to assist writers in completing a television or feature script, while giving them the opportunity to examine African-American history, culture and iconography. tuition is free to those selected.

the program is not designed for beginning-level writers. they are seeking writers who have taken the initiative to study television or feature writing through workshops or classes; though a degree in cinematic writing or filmmaking is not required. In an industry that is extremely competitive, we have found our greatest success in assisting those who have a strong foundation in television or screen writing and have a body of work to show for their efforts. Writers selected for this program usually have no produced credits, but are on the brink of great success. they are able to use the product and the relationships they create in this unique workshop environment to advance their careers. the Hanks-Miller Program is credited with introducing more

successful African-American writers into the entertainment industry than any other program of its type.

doreene Hamilton, the program’s executive director states that “their alumni are highly respected and sought after. they are a primary recruiting source for the disney Writing Fellowship, the Fox diversity Program, the Cbs television Program, the nickelodeon Writers’ Program and the Warner brothers Comedy and drama Writing Program. Our alumni are represented by top agencies including utA, William Morris, ICM, APA and CAA, to name a few.”

Although obtaining employment is not the primary goal of the program, alumni have used relationships and scripts developed in the program to secure positions as television and feature writers, producers, directors and executives. Our writers have created, written and produced for top ten shows on televisions, as well

as news and reality television shows. they have also completed countless freelance assignments. Our Feature writers have not only been produced, but have received honors through “tribeca All Access,” “Hollywood black Film Festival,” “Austin Film Festival” and “Fade In Magazine,” to name a few. they have also completed independent features and short films as well.

their writers have been recognized by organizations including the nAACP; while the Program itself has been recognized by the California governor’s office, a State Senator and the Los Angeles Mayor’s office.

All are invited you to apply or re-apply to our program. they are always seeking writers with talent and a drive for success.

For more information or to obtain an application visit their website at www.CosbyProgram.com or email them at: [email protected]

role in growth of green technologies. sacramento Mayor, Kevin Johnson, an African American himself, wants his city to be known as the emerald city, emerald referring to green technologies and green manufacturing. Mayor Johnson is hoping that sacramento will be the place that eco-entrepreneurs call home when they begin investing and building the hundreds of projected green businesses of the future. the Mayor speaks at green seminars several times a month, sometimes to crowds of more than 200; however the African American community is still a minor percentage of those in attendance.

several years ago, African American representation could be blamed on the government for not properly educating the public on the vast business opportunities that are available through the green technologies industry, however with President Obama’s state of the union speech and recent recovery package, which dedicated billions of dollars towards training for renewable energy and energy efficiency, this cannot be the case.

Maybe the blame, or rather the responsibility, should be placed on the private sector. through advertising and marketing they can help to spread the word and influence the public, not only on the importance of green technologies, but the opportunity the new green economy has for entrepreneurs. Or maybe it’s African Americans themselves for again failing to see the opportunities lying directly in front of them today just like they have failed to see those opportunities within arm’s reach in the past. Or finally maybe it’s our religious leaders! While the business of god has clearly been the most successful business in the African American community for the last 200 years, the benefactors of this 10,000,000 weekly customer base may have forgotten to pass out the latest news of “the green business revolution”.

Whatever the case may be, some industry experts, including myself, feel that if the current trend doesn’t change soon, the African American community will miss out on an enormous opportunity to change the way they live.

thanks in part to Obama’s recovery package, today there are numerous training programs available throughout the country in different types of green

energy, such as solar power. non-profit groups like Solar Richmond (an organization that specializes in the education and training of solar energy installation to disadvantaged youths) have begun training people all over the country, usually at little to no cost for the course. Many private companies are also offering training programs in the solar industry, however these programs can run anywhere from $1,000 to as much as $3,500 per week for specialized courses in solar installation and instructional courses on how to start a solar business.

With all the available training and education, it is not clear why the African American community still remains underrepresented in the pursuit of this industry. the unfortunate part about lagging behind today is that it will make it that much harder to break into the industry tomorrow. It has been projected that in just 3 to 5 years there will more than 20 thousand solar and related businesses across the country, some big and some small, all of which will need competently trained employees. the time is now for African Americans to get ready for these incredible opportunities to come.

to understand just how fast this industry is growing, in 2009 solar technologies generated over $30 billion globally. this included everything from solar panel installations on buildings and homes to the manufacturing of solar panels and related products. In the first quarter of 2011 solar energy is the number one fastest growing industry in the country with a 63% year over year, quarter over quarter growth. At this current pace, it is estimated that by 2019 solar technology will account for over $100 billion of generated revenue per year. this increase means the creation of millions of direct and indirect jobs in the u.s. alone; jobs for everything from manufacturing solar technologies to the people required to market manage and sell the products. to get a glimpse at the future of solar technology, all you have to do is look at what’s going on today. right now you can buy a 2011 toyota Prius complete with a solar panel on the roof. backpacks for middle school children and hikers are being sold with solar panels attached that are used to recharge such devices as cell phones and Ipods. You can even purchase compact solar panel technology that lights your driveway at night and helps to recharge your car’s battery. In a number of research centers across the

nation there are scientists designing materials made of solar technologies that can be incorporated into clothing to provide warmth for your body.

My prediction is that in just 15 years time, nearly every new transport trailer will come complete with solar panel technology that will be used to not only save fuel but also to power the refrigeration trailers that transports of food from one place to another. every major automaker will offer a solar roof on all of their models. every new glass window installed in every building will have some type of solar finish on it generating free energy for the owners. Airplanes will begin to have solar panel technology incorporated into the skin of the fuselage that provides much of the power that propels airplanes on cross country flights. In the past a very limited number of African American entrepreneurs were able to capitalize of tech boom of the 70’s and 80’s, or the dot com boom of the 90’s. the question again becomes will African American’s miss the green energy boom of the 21st century, a boom that is bigger, more impactful, and scripted more for their profile then any of the previous booms. It is not a far stretch

of the imagination to consider that in 15 years solar power might just begin to displace the petroleum and coal industries’ iron grip on our energy needs.

Many of these companies will become power houses, controlling technologies and power similar only to the oil companies of today. this is why it is so important for African Americans to get involved and start learning about solar and other green technologies. African Americans must avoid being left in the dark. they will need to begin educating themselves immediately on what solar energy and all that green technologies have to offer, or they may just find that they have “missed the boat” AgAIn!

Marvin Wilcher is president of Clean energy training Institute located in sacramento California, a training program for people who want to get into the solar energy business. Mr. Wilcher also sponsors a clean energy camp for kids called Camp green (www.campgreenusa.com), as well as his new blog site at www.thegreenmix.com.
