Rock Ford Plantation and The Headless Horseman Good evening and welcome to the 7th Annual Headless Horse-man’s Ball to benefit Rock Ford Plantation!

Some of you may wonder why we have chosen Washington Ir-ving’s legendary Headless Horseman to represent Rock Ford for our annual fundraising event. The first Headless Horseman’s Ball coincided with our production of Sleepy Hollow: The Legend Comes to Rock Ford, which was presented in the mansion in 2008. After repeated requests from our visitors, this original one-act play was brought back in 2015 and presented again this year with expanded performances dates to sold-out audiences.

Rock Ford is a fitting venue for Irving’s classic ghostly tale for a number of reasons. The story is set in the 1790’s, the period of the Hand family’s residence at Rock Ford that we interpret here each day. Furthermore, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow harkens back to the American Revolution. After all, the Headless Horse-man was a Hessian trooper decapitated by a cannon ball during the War. Finally, the story also makes reference to the capture of Major John Andre as a result of the treason of Benedict Arnold: “Many dismal tales were told about funeral trains, and mourning cries and wailings heard and seen where the unfortunate Major Andre was taken, and which stood in the neighborhood.” Major Andre, in addition to previously being a well-regarded prisoner of war in Lancaster, was tried for espionage by General Edward Hand, who was appointed to the panel of General Officers by George Washington which reluctantly felt compelled to sentence him to hang.

Like the village of Sleepy Hollow itself, Rock Ford Plantation con-tinues to be a little corner of the world nestled away from the on-going mad rush of humanity where time itself stands still. Whether this perpetual state of suspended animation exists because of the dedicated support and efforts of our staff, Foundation members and volunteers, or because of some bewitching magic that seems to permeate the very air around this ancient site, we leave to you — and to your imagination.
