Youandyour

employees experience this and

you don’t even realizeit’s happening, do you?Keep your eyes peeled for

Blinks andBottlenecks

Keep your eyes peeled...

because if you blink...

you might misssomething very important and

valuableI’m about to

share with you.

Ever notice yourself consciouslystarting your commute home...

and then ask yourself...

“How could I possiblybe home already?”

It felt like only afew minutes had passed.*

*Assuming your commute is more than a few minutes.

Or you’re walking to lunchwith your coworkers...

enjoying the conversation...

and you’ve suddenly arrived.

What’s going on?

Are youreyes stillpeeled?

Good.

I was afraid you’d blinkand miss what I’m saying.

We experience something called

attentional blinks.

no, not

winks ;-)

blinks

In 1987, Broadbent and Broadbent

did a study to explore the concept that

the mind has a blind spot at times.

Here’s how their study went...

They flashed a series of 5-letter wordsat about 10 every second.

AAAAAMMMMM

XXXXX

Participants had to spot

2 particular words.

Normally, we’d expect

to spot about

80%of the targets.

but...

when one target followed anotherless than a half second apart...

< 0.5secs

...participantsdidn’t notice thesecond item...

and theaverage proportionof correct reports

went down to nearly

0%

You could say the participants’ attention

“blinked”for a half second afterspotting the first target.

There’s a processing

bottleneckhappening here.

Essentially, ourlimited capacity

for payingattention

is abotteneck.

Some things passthrough while we

miss others throughattentionalblinks.
