Dropping the Bomb

Pros• Removing obstacles to Japan’s

surrender will produce a speedy end to the war and thousands of American lives.

• Allowing the Japanese to give up without betraying their emperor will prevent the deaths of hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of Japanese civilians and will make them more willing to cooperate with U.S. occupation forces after the war.

• Why drop an atom bomb and not just heavily bomb the area?

• Why drop two bombs? Why not just one?• Was the bomb dropped meant to order Japan’s

surrender or another reason? • Was the bomb dropped to show Russia our

power. Why not test the bomb on a deserted island to just show the bombs power and hope that Japan would surrender.

• United States, Britain, France and Russia signed several treaties with: Italy, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Finland

• These Treaties consisted of these countries to reassume responsibilities of sovereign countries and qualify for membership in the United Nations

• Six million Jews would lose their lives in the Holocaust

• Germans were a superior race in Europe, the Jews were an alien race thought to be a threat to the German superior way of life

• Final Solution- two out of every three Iews were killed in this period of time

• First phase was placing Jewish population in Ghettos

Nuremburg Trials

• Nazi officials are placed on trial for their role in the Holocaust

• 24 men were placed on trial– 7 men were sentenced to varying lengths of prison– 12 men were sentenced to death– 3 men were acquitted– 1 committed suicide before the trials began– 1 was tried in a separate trial, but deemed unfit for

trial and died in prison
