BY THE GRACE OF SADGURU Sri Ganapathy
Sachchidananda Swamiji, beginning with this issue, we
will try to understand the meaning of a Veda Mantra each month.
No science covers all subjects. Biology teaches only about
living beings. Sculpture teaches only about sculpting.
Mechanics teaches only about machines. Each science deals
only with the topic that is relevant to it. It may touch upon
other topics based on the context.
If there is one single work that covers all the topics in the
world, it is the Veda. There is no subject that is not included in
the Veda. Out of thousands of branches, at the present time
only a few branches of the Veda are available to us. The rest of
them are buried in the sands of Time.
So extensive is the scope of the Veda, that even the greatest of
scholars find it next to impossible to grasp the subject matter
in its entirety as is dealt with the Veda presently accessible to
us.. The Veda consists primarily of two sections. The first
section deals with action. The second section deals with
knowledge.
Veda’s purpose is to elevate one to the level of divinity. It aims to
help mankind reach the highest Truth. Four-faced Brahma based
His act of creation on the Veda. Lord Vishnu protects this creation
with help from the Veda. The essence of the entire creation is
rooted in the Veda. Creation ultimately merges into Omkara (the
form of Lord Shiva).
The seers intended that the Truth contained in the Veda should
be within the reach of every human being regardless of
nationality, religion, caste, or gender. We may not be able to
learn the meaning of all the mantras. But we can at least learn
the meaning of a few mantras that are frequently chanted and
heard. With that knowledge we can improve our way of living
and be the supporting pillars and contributing citizens of our
society. Let us aim to attain the ultimate Truth. Just because it
has been said that we should learn the meaning of the mantras,
we should not jump to the conclusion that a mantra is ineffective
if we do not know what it means. Each mantra is intrinsically
filled with power by virtue of the energy contained in the sound
syllables that it consists of. Despite not knowing the meaning,
chanting of Veda mantras and listening to the Veda mantras
yields wonderful results. The benefits are multiplied if one
chants and listens to the Veda mantras with full knowledge of
the meaning that they convey.
The Glory of
Vedas – I
Jaya Guru Datta
SRI DATTA VIJAYANANDA TEERTHA SWAMIJI
The power that is inherent in the Veda mantras brings about a
great positive change in society. It fills the environment with
peace. It diminishes the imbalances that occur in Nature.
Let us contemplate upon Lord Ganapati first for the removal of
any obstacles in our attempt to learn the meaning of the mantras.
Let us begin with a mantra that is addressed to Lord Ganapati.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jyäúûharájaí Brahmaïáí Brahmaïaspata Á NaÙùøïvannütibhissèda Sádanam..
“O Ganapati! O Lord of all mantras! We invoke you, who are
the leader of all the groups of divinities, the greatest amongst
scholars, endowed with all virtues and hence are comparable in
fame to everything in existence, the most famous, and the king
of all kings. (Sama Veda mentions that you reign supreme in the
melodic technique called, ‘Jyeshtha’).
You, who possess all the above virtues, please accept this seat
to protect us (by preventing any obstacles that might come in
our intended meritorious deed), as you listen to to ourour
praises.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lord Ganapati should be extolled with this Mantra.
This world consists of several groups; of deities, of human
beings, of animals, of plant life, and of different planes of
existence. Ganapati is the Lord of all these different groups. He
is called ‘Mahahasti’. Hasta has two meanings; hasta means
hand; hasta also means an elephant’s trunk. Since Ganapati
has the head of an elephant, He is referred to as Mahahasti. He
shows us His gesture of protection as if to say, “I am here for
you. You need not fear. Go ahead with confidence”. That is
why He is Mahahasti.
Everyone feels apprehensive while beginning any new task.
That is when courage and confidence are required. Ganapati,
with his huge personality, the elephant’s trunk and the gesture
of protection removes our obstacles and leads us forward. Let
us remember Him every day. Let us have our children remember
Him. (Jaya Guru Datta)
Sri Datta Vijayananda Teertha Swamiji is the Junior
Pontiff of Avadhoota Datta Peetham, Mysore. With
early education at the Datta Peetham Veda Patashala,

Sahasranama and bhasyams on Sundarakanda,
Lalitha Sahasranama, Bhagavad Gita, etc. Sri
Swamiji has travelled extensively in India and abroad

Sanatana Dharma and Samskruthi through His
brilliant discourses.

AMERICA IS CONSIDERED as the heavenly land
of riches and pleasure which lures immigrants from
countries all over the world including India. To fulfill the
spiritual and religious needs of the Indian community many
Hindu temples have been built across this land over the
past thirty years. This has lent an aura of spirituality to
this land. Bhagavantha, Lord of this universe, has made
this bhoga bhoomi, (Land of materialistic opulence) into
Punya bhoomi (Land of holiness) by his presence here.
I am a priest at Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago located
in Lemont, IL. Paancha Raatra Deeksha Kutumba, to
which I belong, is a family dedicated to worshiping and
performing religious pooja services. It is believed that men
in this family are born for the sole purpose of service to
God. I am forever indebted to Sri M.R. Sampath Kumar
Bhattacharya, the scholar in two vedas, for being
instrumental in relocating us in USA. As of 2007 there
are nearly sixty Paancha Raatra Deeksha families in the
USA performing religious services.
In all the temples religious ceremonies are conducted
according to the sacred tradition of Pancha raatra, Shaiva
and Vaikhaanasa rituals. Rathotsavas, yaaga, yajna and
Dhanurmaasa etc. are but a few of the sacred rituals
performed in these temples that give this materialistic
country full of worldly pleasures an added dimension of
spirituality.
Sacred Temples in America
As far as I know the Maha Ganapathi temple in New
York was the first Hindu temple built in USA. Temple
consecrated on July 4, 1977. Also there is Sri Ranga temple
in Pomona, NY; where Ranganatha Swamy resides. This
is considered as the sacred counterpart of Sri Ranga in
India. Just like in Sri Ranga religious services such as
tiruvaradhane, thalige and shaattuvarai are conducted in
Vaishnava tradition here. There are statues of the twelve
Alvars and Goda devi. In Rochester, NY there is
Rajarajeshwari temple popularly known as Golden temple
of USA.
Hindu Divinity in
U S AMr. Krishnarajan is a Senior Priest at the
Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago with an
experience of over 27 years. He has
several laurels to his credit such as
Vichara Sara Manjusha, Pancharatra
Agama Vidwan, Vishishtaadvaita Vidwan
and is also a reputed Hindi Vidwan. D. KRISHNARAJAN
The second temple built in USA is the temple of
Venkateshwara in Pittsburg. Pittsburg temple is called the
Tirupati of America. Just like Tirupati, this temple is located
on a hill giving the feeling of Sapta Giri. The third temple
built in USA is the Sri Rama temple in Chicago. This is
truly represents as the Ayodhya of America. This is also
the biggest temple in USA. Another temple in Chicago is
the Balaji temple in Aurora.
Also in Chinmaya mission of Chicago there is the marble
statue of Badari Narayana which reminds us of
Badarikashrama in India. The Maha Lakshmi temple in
Boston is the counterpart of Padmavati temple in
Tiruchanoor. This is the only Lakshmi temple in the USA.
In Nashville, TN there is Ganapathy temple with a
beautiful tall statue of Maha Ganapathy. There is another
Maha Ganapathy temple in Livermore California where
there is a special Benne kapu seve.
There is a Shiva temple in Flint, MI which is called
Pashchima Kaashi. In Houston TX there is Meenakshi
temple just like in Madhurai. The priest there hails from
the same family as the priests in Madhurai Meenakshi
temple. In Huntsville, Alabama there is Jagannatha temple
as the counterpart of Puri Jagannatha. The Shiva-Vishnu
temple in Washington D.C. is truly a Hari-Hara Kshetra.
The specialty of its Rajagopuram is that half the gopuram
is depicts Shiva while the other half is depicts Vishnu. In
New Jersey there is Guruvayurappa temple just as in
Guruvayur.
These are some of the temples I am familiar with and
have visited. There are hundreds of Hindu temples all
over USA. This rich and generous country has
benevolently welcomed all immigrants including Indians
allowing them the religious freedom to worship in their
own way. It has treated with respect different cultures,
priests, religions and attires. This is a Karma bhoomi
(land of toil) that has become a Punya Bhoomi (land of
holiness). Blessed is this land that is adorned with Hindu
temples and Indians.

learnt the nuances of the subject from Prof.

MARRIAGES ARE MADE
IN heaven – so goes an
English adage. The life
partner one gets in this life is decided
by cosmic forces. And what better
cosmic force can we conjecture than
planetary vibrations in deciding the
spouse of a person?
The 7th house in a person’s horoscope
determines spouse. It is imperative
that this house be tenanted by
benefics if a person were to be blessed
with a loving spouse. The trend in
today’s world is to select the bride or
bridegroom through extraneous
factors such as education, status, job,
income and financial background. No
doubt, these factors bestow a sense
of security to the person who is going
to marry, but, is there something more
than this which could have an impact
on married life? My answer would be
“yes”.
There is a saying “ Money can buy a
house; but it cannot buy a home.”
Whosoever coined this adage should
be called a genius. Nobody said it
better. In Tamilnadu, there is a
festival called “Kaanum Pongal”
which falls on the second day
reckoned from Makar Sankranthi. On
this day, people go to the places such
as zoological gardens, beaches,
cinema houses and other places of
entertainment. One can see lakhs of
poor people on the beach fronts but
hardly anyone affluent, who is out

there to enjoy. The multi – millionaires
probably on this day sit in board rooms
discussing how much profit they could
generate in the financial year but the
poor guys who do not know from
where their next meal is going to come
from, indulge in fun and frolic. Oliver
Goldsmith wrote in “The Deserted
Village”, “Where wealth accumulates,
men decay.” This poem was written
in 1770, but to this day it his words
have proved prophetically true.
The Sun in the 7th is not a desirable
feature in a horoscope but exceptions
are there. For instance the Sun in 7
aspected by Jupiter is a welcome
feature more so if the lagna is
Aquarius as Sun becomes lord of 7.
Moon in 7 makes a native passionate.
Distinction should be made between
waxing moon and waning moon.
Waxing moon in 7 is good, while a
waning moon is good if it has certain
beneficial features such as placement
in Taurus or Cancer or the house of
benefic.
Mars is the planet to watch out for
while in the 7th. Mars denotes
aggression, valour and haste. All these
qualities have negative connotations in
a person’s married life. One will get a
cantankerous spouse if Ketu is in 7.
Presence of Saturn can delay
marriage while in 7. Saturn can also
give marriage to a person who is very
old, or who is a divorcee or with a
widow or a widower. It can also give
marriage to a person who is dark in
complexion.
Rahu is similar in effects to Saturn
but can give an unconventional or
heterodox marriage. It can also give
marriage to a foreigner. Both Jupiter
and Mercury give happiness in
marriage while in 7. Jupiter in the 7th
gives rise to stable and happy married
life. I would suggest that astrologers
while giving guidance on matching of
the charts should accord top priority
to the charts where Jupiter is in the
7th in a sign other than Capricorn.
Though Venus is a benefic, it is not
fully favoured in 7th due to operation
of the dictum, “Karako bhava
Nashaya” , (Karaka in Bhava spoils
the Bhava)
When Venus is 7 for Scorpio Lagna,
Kendradipatya dosha (affliction)
occurs. Venus in 7 is bad, when it is
in Taurus or Virgo.
Individually both Saturn and Mars are
bad in the 7th, but what if they were
in conjunction? Results could be
disastrous. I would advise students of
Astrology to commit to memory, one
rule on this topic “When Saturn and
Mars are in the 7th house identical
with Cancer, the spouse of that person
will be chaste, fortunate and
beautiful” (Phaladeepika, Chapter 10,
Verse 3). The exception carved out
by Mantreswara in Phaladeepika is
unique in the sense that, all authors
are unanimous in their verdict that

Marriage proposals do not succeed in general. But in
some cases there will be partial success. Newlyweds
enjoy themselves despite the problems of health and the
family problems which disturb you.
Makha: There will be gains from investments. You
vanquish enemies and earn wealth. There will be many
favourable currents leading to your welfare.
Poorvaphalguni: Problems of health cause concern. Many
disputes end in your favour. But unfavourable currents
disturb you.
Uttaraphalguni 1: You gain by the favour of seniors. You
may face injuries in the first half. Favourable currents
cheer you up.
KANYA (Virgo)
Uttaraphalguni 2, 3, 4, Hasta and
Chitta 1, 2
This offers some good results. It is true that the major
part of your activities are successful. You are favoured
at the office and social circles. If you are interested in
visiting shrines, you succeed. There are financial gains.
Marriage proposals click and your aspirations for childbirth
succeed. With all these, you find that your progress is
impeded mainly due to your negligence and lethargy you
have developed. Some women who feign friendship go
to the extent of playing double game and cheating you.
In romance, you meet with disappointment partly due to
the indifferent attitude of the concerned person. There is
flow of income. But you make wrong investments being
misguided by some associates. Even in the case of
professional development, a woman may stand in the way
and steal a march over you. Your health poses some
problems. But the affectionate consort and children cheer
you up while you face setbacks in some matters. Though
your antagonists indulge in machinations, they do not
succeed to the extent they wish. You are favoured by the
goddess of fortune!
Uttaraphalguni 2, 3, 4: You gain from investments. There
may be injuries. Favourable currents cheer you up.
Hasta: Problems of health cause concern. You win in
disputes =. Unfavourable currents disturb you.
Chitta 1, 2: There will be gains from investments and
favour of senior kinsman. In the early half, you may face
injuries. There will be favourable currents which cheer
you up.
TULA (Libra)
Chitta 3,4, Swati and
Visakha 1, 2, 3
The Sun in the early half, Mars in the early half and
Mercury are favourable. Others are not.
This offers a bitter taste, but for some pleasant results.
First of all the condition of health deteriorates if you have
any chronic illness. In other cases also problems
concerned with digestion, torment you. Your travel plans
are thwarted by the acrimony of some antagonists. In
some cases the official bottleneck delays matters. In the
official career you feel disappointed because of the
indifference of the higher ups to the really commendable
output you have. Marriage proposals meet with
disappointment. In some cases an alliance may be settled
after much struggle.
But some cheerful events add colour to the bitter
experiences. Your loan application may meet with
favourable response. A property dispute may be settled
in your favour. Newlyweds face problems because of
the negative attitudes of in-laws. Children become
recalcitrant and give you dissatisfaction. Even your consort
becomes indifferent to your excellent ideas. There is
some income, but the general trend is unfavourable.
Chitta 3, 4: There will be gains from investments. Injuries
are likely in the first half. Favourable currents make you
happy.
Swati: Problems of health disturb you. You win in lawsuits.
Favourable currents cheer you up.
Visakha 1, 2, 3: You gain from investments. Many
unfavourable currents disturb you. In the early half you
win in disputes.
VRISCHIKA (Scorpio)
Visakha 4, Anuradha and Jyestha
The Sun in the latter half, Mars, Jupiter and Ketu are
favourable. Others do not.
This offers a fairly good picture. You find that many
privileges aspired for are within your reach. Travel plans
connected with profession are partially impeded by a
woman, but you get everything set right with your might.
