Established 1985

CRTD Roles

• CRTD facilitates the collaboration between industry, government, and academia needed to address critical national and global issues that require mechanical engineering expertise.

– Example: ASME Energy Grand Challenge Roadmap• CRTD supports research efforts that meet the needs identified by today’s mechanical engineering professionals.

– Example: Gas Pipeline Safety Yield Strength Application Guide

• CRTD helps to advance the technologies and processes that will ensure safe and sustainable development now and in the future.

– Example: Sustainable Products & Processes Strategic Plan

CRTD Capabilities / Roles“What we are uniquely good at”

• Ability to address ASME Enterprise level issues• Development of pre-competitive, collaborative

research projects • Vision and roadmap workshops • Industry best practices • Peer and program reviews • Create ad-hoc Research Committees – Incubator role

Page 4: The ASME Center for Research and Technology Development (CRTD) Established 1985

CRTD Capabilities / Roles“What we are uniquely good at”

• Ability to leverage existing CRTD Research Committee content into ASME.org content

• Act as neutral party convener to share knowledge and best practices

• Provide the collective knowledge of ASME members to government and industry programs

• Provide “home” for new research committees – e.g. “Jointed Structures Research Committee”

Page 5: The ASME Center for Research and Technology Development (CRTD) Established 1985

CRTD Research and Ad Hoc Committees(Over 400 Participants) / Research Areas include:

• Gas Pipeline Safety• Peer Review Committee for Energy and Environment• Energy, Environment, and Waste• Mechanics of Jointed Structures• Nanomanufacturing Technology• Power Plant & Environmental Chemistry • Radiation (X-Ray) Technologies• Risk Technology• Sustainable Energy• Sustainable Products and Processes • Water & Steam in Thermal Systems• Water Management Technology• Ad Hoc Committee on BioEnergy

CRTD Opportunities for CollaborationOpportunity for a member of a Technical Division, Institute, or a Section to collaborate with CRTD to: • Join one of the 12 CRTD research committees• Create an ad-hoc CRTD research committee in their area of

interest• Develop Collaboratively Sponsored Research Projects with

Government & Industry Support,• Develop a Federal Government or Industry sponsored

Workshop,• Develop an R&D Vision or an R&D Technology Roadmap

in your area of Interest. • Assist in the implementation of one of the key project action

items from the ASME Energy Grand Challenge Roadmap or the Water Management Technology Vision & Roadmap Workshop
