  • My fellow anglers and friends,

Welcome to the Angling and Outdoor Recreational Fair 2015 Sp-ecial Report. We paid a visit to the event on the 30th May and as usual had loads of fun. It is at this fair that we met up with angling friends who live in other states and have long time not met except on Facebook.

One thing I have decided to do is to be more open going forward. What I mean is that I will start to pay more attention to local brands going forward both personally and as a magazine. This will be interesting because I believe that we have got good talented craftsmen, designers, knowledgeable anglers, etc. who know a lot about what works for local markets and they are willing to do something about it.

It is fair to offer them the same opportunities as bigger more established brands and hopefully help them market their products overseas as well thus achieving globaliza-tion. I know some of you are probably shaking your heads not really in support but why not support them if their products are really good.

What got me thinking this way? Recently we were invited to cover an event to promote Terengganu as a tourist destination along with 120 over media folks from around the world and on this trip I realize just how lovely Malaysia really is (since we were brought to places I never knew existed). And we certainly have things that make visitors from other parts of the world go WOW! That makes me proud.

Well, Ill let you go back to reading this issue which covers the fair and a few products that were being highlighted.

Thank you for your support and happy reading.

    Cheers,PhilEditor In Chief

  • The Asian Angler Reports

    Welcome To The Angling And

    Outdoor Recreation Fair 2015

    15

  • Oh Yeah! The Fishing And Outdoor Fair is back and this year and was held on the 29th to the 31st of May at the Se-tia Convention Center in Setia Alam. The venue is larger with lots of parking spaces. I had one day to spend at the fair and I went all out and had some fun.

    17

  • Kid In A Candy St

    ore

Upon walking through the doors my heart started racing faster and faster. It felt like a V12 engine and my steps grew further and faster. I tried as best as I can to hold back the excitement but alas I walked about touching everything with-in reach, exactly like a kid in a candy store.

    19

  • There are so many new and current fish-ing tackle to see, feel, and try. What I looked forward to the most is the oppor-tunity to meet with friends from near and far, and this year I have friends who came all the way from Taiwan and Japan to showcase their products at the fair.

    21

  • 23

  • This years fair sees more participants and thus more stalls. Yamaha showcased some seriously good looking motorcy-cles, there are boats by Trojan, canoes and boats by Kairos, there is even a boat builder called Tsun Shipbuilding enter-prise, or should you already have a boat and in need of a club; The Royal Selan-gor Yacht Club had taken a booth too. Jeep also sent two huge vehicles for the show.

    Highlights

    25

  • Walking through the huge doors and stepping into the hall, I was in fishing tackle heaven. There was a good crowd and the booths were a lot more impres-sive as compared to previous shows. Not sure where to begin I decided to follow the flow of the crowd.

    Back To Fishing

    27

  • Sea Tackle

The first booth I headed to was Sea Tack-les booth. Sea Tackle featured their new rod grip by Winn and the latest guides by Fuji, the Torzite guides. There were two vehicles parked at their booth being a Volkswagen Scirocco and the other, I just cant remember. It could be a Volk-swagen Touareg or Tiguan (I cannot re-member). I dont know why they were brought in but they did spice things up somewhat.

    29

  • I have been hearing about this project but have not seen the grips just yet that is until now. Winn is a pioneer of poly-mer grips used for golf clubs. They have ventured into making fishing rod grips and what they offer is indeed impressive and unique in terms of feel and design.

Sea Tackle - Winn Rod Grips

    31

  • The Winn grips feels like soft rubber. They feel nice and are comfortable to hold. They look really good too coming in a variety of design and colours. With these grips around the fishing world will see a change, an evolution of fishing rods perhaps.

  • The Fuji Torzite guides have reached our markets some time last year. The Torz-ite guides are the lightest and smoothest guides around. They are also amongst the toughest. Torzite is made up of two words being Tor for Torus the origi-nal form of the ring, and Zite to express hard shinning materials.

    Sea Tackle - Fuji Torzite

    37

  • Torzite is claimed to be 40% lighter than normal SiC

  • Pure Fishing

Next I headed over to Pure Fishing where they showcased a large array of new rods such as the Berkley Heritage, Abu Garcias New Hornet, some reels, lines, and baits. Amongst the plethora of things showcased this one old school reel by Penn caught my eye.

    45

  • The Penn 704 Z is a full metal bodied spinning reel but with graphite side plates. It is an old school reel (not a rep-lica) true and true. It is a tough looking reel as with most Penn reels and it looks seriously good. I love old school reels and maybe Ill buy one.

    Pure Fishing - Penn 704 Z

    47

  • Features

Full Metal Body with graphite sideplate

    HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers

Machine cut brass main gear with stain-less steel pinion gear

  • Pure Fishing - Penn Custom Shop

Another that caught my eye is a Penn reel with side plates made by Penn Cus-tom Shop. For those not in the know, should you own a Penn reel or are think-ing of buying a Penn reel, you could con-sider customizing your reel colour and engraving (at a price of course) at Penn Custom Shop.

  • Halco

Halco based in Perth, Australia was here too, with Sabre Tackle to showcase some of their products such as lures and their magical split ring pliers. Also in their entourage is Dave Hodge also known as the Barefoot Angler. Dave Hodge is an angler, a hunter, and one of the best trick casters in the land down under, Austra-lia.

    61

  • Lures showcased by Halco include the Laser Pro range, Trembler range, Skim Stick range, etc. Halco also showcased some spoons such as the Halco Streaker, Barra Spoon, etc. My favourite split ring pliers sat there too fall to see

    63

  • OAG Worldwide

OAG or Outdoors Accessories Group Worldwide took up a spot too at this years fair. OAG is new distributor man-aged by well experienced entrepreneurs from within the fishing tackle industry. OAG distributes and dealer of brands such as Pflueger, Accurate, ZMAN, Smith, Hots, etc.

    65

  • OAG - Pflueger Salt

OAG launched the Pflueger Salt Spin spinning reel during the fair. The Salt Spin looks great. It is a full metal body saltwater reel developed in Australia. It is made to handle the brutes that call Australia home. The Salt Spin features a stainless steel main shaft, Precision Cut Digital Gearing, Dynamic Carbon Drag using carbon drag washers, heavy duty bail arm, etc.

    67

  • 69

  • OAG Also showcased the new (as in newly arrived) Accurate Fury reel that comes with a blue spool. a powerful le-ver drag system, ABEC 5 stainless steel bearings, stainless steel gears, etc. These reels are tough.

    OAG - Accurate Fury

    71

  • 73

  • Accurate BX reels are powerful reels coming in single or double speeds. They are well known and proven reels. OAG showcased a beautiful one in blue that looks superb. They come with ABUC 5 rated stainless steel bearings, oversize stainless steel anti reverse bearing, stain-less steel gears, and a superb looking handle knob.

  • Legit Design

Another foreign brand that participated in this years event is Legit Design of Ja-pan. Legit design rods are designed by Hirofumi Iitaka, CEO of Legit Designs. He has vast experience with rod designs and engineering. Those familiar with the Abu Garcia Fantasista range of rods (Japan spec) will know his capabilities.

    79

  • Legit Design - Wild Side

The first rod series designed and manu-factured by Legit Design called the Wild Side, sold out within the month of its launch (a few thousand pieces I. I can-not remember how many) just within Japan. The Wild side rods are super light weight, very well balanced, have loads of power, and are reinforced with Aramid fibres.

    81

  • Aramid fibres are used to enhance the strength of the blank thus allowing for the use of thinner, lighter, high carbon graphite sheets to make thinner and lighter rods. This gives better sensitivity while staying light and tough.

The Wild Side rods come with improved offset joint (Butt Joint) sections that re-duces the occurrences of blank getting stuck. As for components they come with Light weight Fuji KR Concept Guides and Fuji ECS (VSS for spinning) reel seats.

  • SureCatch World

The next booth I visited belongs to Su-reCatch World. SureCatch showcased a good amount of products from their ATC rods and reels, to Zerek lures. I have seen how their soft baits perform and am glad that they are launching new models.

    113

  • Surecatch World - Zerek Lures

    115

  • Zerek certainly has a good number of lures. That is needed as their lures are not sold just within Asia but exported to Europe as well. At the fair they launched new freshwater range and saltwater range of lures.

    117

  • Zerek - Saltwater Lures

Bluewater Craft Limited - Zappelin lures, Speed Slider, Thermite Poppers, Pelagicz lures, Step Slider jigs, Cili Padi jigs, and Cavalla Lures

Saltwater Craft Series - Live Shrimp soft baits, Snap-pin Cherabin soft baits, Live Cherabin soft baits, Tide Trail lures, Ripper Diver lures, Long Trail lures, Barra-X lures.

Origin Series - Giant Ruby lures, Sabre Dance lures, Gecko lures, Ze-Dog lures, Wonder Minnow lures, Mini Chug poppers, Ruby Crank lures, and Rocker Vib vibration lures.

    119

  • 121

  • Zerek - Freshwater Lures

Freshwater Craft Series - Auto Frog lures, Popparazzi poppers, Venus Trap lures, Trail Weaver lures, Tango Shad lures.

Origin Series- Surgery lures, Giant Ruby lures, Skittish Dog lures, Gecko lures, Live Flash Minnow soft baits (super stretchable), Wonder Minnow lures, Sa-bre Dance lures, Ruby Crank lures, Ze-Dog lures, Rocker vib vibration lures, and Mini Chug poppers.

    123

  • My Favourites: Live Shrimp, Live Cher-abin, Snappin Cherabin

A small aquarium with water was used to demonstrate how these soft baits swim underwater. They look real and certainly delicious. These soft baits are soft baits I certainly want to test.

  • Megabass

Distributed by Kepong Tackle, Megabass is brand name that attracts a lot of atten-tion especially here in Malaysia. Mega-bass showcased a vast array of lures to-gether with a few reels and rods that are bound to turn heads the way a Ferrari would.

    131

  • Speciale, the meaning of special in Ital-ian. As the name suggests, the Megabass Monoblock Speciale ITO Limited Edi-tion is the ultimate high-performance machine that is packed with a number of advanced special functions. What adds to the value of this reel is that only 100 pieces are made. So, if youre a collector, this is one reel you want to take a look at.

    3

  • Megabass - ARMS Superleggera

Wow! is all I can say. With mouth agape and eyes wide open. The Megabass ARMS Superleggera (pronounced: Su-per Lejera) is one very well designed rod with the intention to blow minds. It looks superb and I dare say the best looking rod I have seen so far this year.

    135

  • Superleggera is Italian for super light. This term is normally used with cars that have gone through the process weight shedding. The ARMS Superleggera must thus be a very light rod. Unfortunately it is placed behind a Perspex sheet and no one can feel it.

    137

  • TCE Tackles

This year I started paying attention to lo-cal brands. I have a new mission and that is to not undermine the local brands and help them share their messages as well. Since doing so I have come across some very nice products. With this in mind I paid a visit to TCE Tackle and they do have some eye catching products.

    139

  • TCE Tackles - Ajiking Wahoo 1966

The Wahoo 1966 is a conventional type reel that is designed pretty well coming with engraved side plates, and drilled T-Bar power handle to match. It is made of aircraft grade aluminium, comes with 6 stainless steel ball bearings, carbon drag washers, and has a claimed max drag of 10kg.

    141

  • The Wahoo 1966 comes with a line out alarm and it is a lever drag type reel. For its price, it does look appealing. I am not sure how it will perform. But for such a price one gets a reel side plate that is en-graved and not merely printed. Thumbs up for looks.

    143

  • 145

  • TCE Tackles - Ajiking Barramundi Pro

The Barramundi pro is a spinning reel. It is well designed mixing stainless steel wires with aluminium to design its body. It certainly looks different and I mean that in a good way. It is like looking at Harley Davidson motorcycles and then being wowed instead by a custom built bike.

    147

  • The Barramundi Pros claim to fame are 9 stainless steel bearings and a one way clutch, carbon drag washers, a forged aluminium spool and a aluminium cut spool (not sure if one is a spare), high quality stainless steel handle and EVA knob, thick bail wire, etc.

    149

  • TCE Tackles - Ajiking Atom S Rod

The brand may not be as sweet as some of the more up market brands but Ajiking is certainly brave. One can see that they are willing to go where few dare venture too. I have not rods fitted with Ameri-can Tackles Microwave guides system here in Malaysia until I came across the Atom S.

The Atom S feels decent. Looks wise I must say that it looks pretty plain Jane but what caught my eye is the use of Mi-crowave guides of which is said to give better casting accuracy, better distance, eliminates wind knots, and reduces fa-tigue from vibrations during the cast.

    151

  • TCE Tackles - Okuma New 2015 Metaloid

Okumas new conventional reel, the Metaloid was showcased here by TCE Tackles too. The tough Metaloid is a strong contender in the jigging scene especially with slow jigging on the rise. These reels feel rigid.

  • TCE Tackles - Shinju i-Reel 2015 New

This here is one rell that looks very good design wise. It looks super sporty and hyper modern. Per-formance wise I cannot confirm much except that it has moderate smoothness with decent balance. It is claimed to have 9+1 bearings.

What I really like is the design.

  • Legit Design Wild Side Introducin The Asian AnglerNote: Products in this section have not been tested by The Asian Angler magazine

LEGIT, the origin of LEGIT DE-SIGN, is a slang which means real or legitimate. Legit refers to the concept of the rods that they aim to make. It is also a commandment to themselves is the creators to follow.

Two rivals, Hirofumi Iitaka and Takeshi Onikata, involved in the de-velopment of high end rods but work-ing with different companies decided to come together bringing with them vast experience of rod development and engineering for both Japan Do-mestic Market (JDM) as well as in-ternational markets, creating a strong force and a powerful product. That product is Legit Design.

    205

  • Wild Side rods was created to show the world the prowess of Legit Design. It acts as the companys business card, a testimony to what Legit Design has up its sleeves. Rather than to walk in the norm or rod developing, they decided to do things differently and to rebel against the norm, thus walking on the wild side.

Wild Side also signifies how both once upon a time corporate figures holding high positions decided to leave the rat race, taking a risk, and walk on the wild side.

    207

  • When developing rods such as bass rods, weight is often a criteria em-phasized on and often translates to performance. In Legit Design, they look at performance during the actual time of fishing. Being lightweight alone is not enough. The true power of the rod too must be obtained.

While developing the Wild Side, all possibilities were taken into consid-eration with all options tried. This brings about a high performance rod with a high performance blank with easy casting capabilities, high sensi-tivity, and has a lot of power to set the hook, and subdue the fish.

    209

  • A Blank Away From The Crowd

The life of the rod is in its blank. In developing the Wild Side, carbons of various modulus were tried and test-ed from 30 tons to 40 tons and on to 46 tons with the selective use of sev-eral different resin from as low as 24 tons carbon of which affords better absorption and elasticity.

Using 46 tons carbon allows for super sensitivity, power, and rigidity where as lower tonnage carbon such as 30 tons and 24 tons offers better flexibili-ty. A mixture of carbon from different tonnages goes into the Wild Side rods thus creating a multi modulus rods.

The entire blank (except for the solid tip portion) is reinforced with aramid fibers of which strengthens the blank protecting the high carbon section of the blank allowing for thinner walls and lots of power. Each rod model has a specially selected mandrel of which determines the taper of the blank.

  • A Blank Away From The CrowdAramid fibres are super strong and bullet proof with excellent resistance to breaking. They are used as rein-forcement materials in tires, body armour, automotive brake pads, and in aircraft materials. Aramid fibres of single directions and two directions are also used to reinforce bridges. It is an excellent material that combines robustness and suppleness.

The Wild Side uses carbon sheets that is well stretched and layered with aramid fibres in multiple directions, without any gaps, as a reinforcing ma-terial. This gives it strong recoil pow-er and high tolerance levels to twist throughout the entire blank.

  • When it comes to guides, Legit Design defines its own original setting for each model. They do not just look at guide diameters. Guide types are very important as well as placement to fit the characteristics of each rod model and application. This is to maximize performance for the targeted application.

  • Reel Seats

The Wild Side uses ECS reels seat by Fuji for its bait casting models. Why not choose the latest reel seat. The choice of reel seats depends on the use or application of the rod. Also the use of dif-ferent finger positions or rather different styles of holding the rods is quite vast and the ECS reel seats gives the best fit with lesser interferences or irregularities. The reel seat is also painted with non-slip black pain.

For spinning models, VSS Fuji reel seat is used. The reason for its use is that it has a longer hood set and fits well in the palm whether it is held us-ing the two fingers or three fingers style. It too comes with non-slip black paint.

  • Rubber End Cap

The end cap is tapered down and is used to pro-tect the rear handle from scratches. It is made of rubber for easy grip. It also reduces burden allow-ing for better grip and support during the fight. A simple emblem of the logo is inserted within.

At Legit Design, things are kept real. You only get the best. All is set. Now are you ready to take a walk on the Wild Side?
