The ASCPA Offered More than $14 Million in Grants in 2014 By David Kiger

Introduction• Last year, The American Society for the Prevention

of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) offered nearly 1,300 grants to more than 840 animal welfare organizations. These grants totaled more than $14 million. Grantees included rescue groups, sanctuaries, private shelters, and municipal organization in all 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Many of these grants created foundations for long-lasting partnerships with key organizations around the nation. As these relationships become stronger, the ASPCA’s ability to save animals’ lives will grow exponentially.

ASCPA• More than $5 million of last year’s grants went

toward saving animals in shelters by covering the costs of medical care, expanding behavioral programs, and funding adoption events. Nearly $4 million went toward initiatives to spay and neuter pets to minimize the number of unplanned kitten and puppy births. About $2.5 million in grants helped organizations improve their ability to serve animals in crisis by responding to reports of cruelty. Another $860,000 subsidized critical safety net programs. These initiatives include pet food banks and medical care programs for pet owners without the means to pay for services.
