The Art of Vigiling - Wisdom of the World

1
Vigiling is a sacred art form, calling us forth to embody the highest expressions of our compassion, empathy, and an attention to the nuances of the seen and unseen. Since modern medicine tends to treat patients in ways that focus on the symptom, not the cause—vigilling offers us the precious opportunity to provide greater respect, dignity, and meaningful time to those facing illness and the end of life experience. This is done by honoring the unique sensory, emotional, and spiritual needs each human being faces under duress. By evoking the resonant sounds of “letting go,” you can serve as an instrument of the Divine by “tending space” not only for the one facing transition, but also for the surrounding people, agendas, and emotions that are occurring simultaneously during this auspicious time. This work has been inspired by a dear friend and associate, the late Megory Anderson, who authored the timeless classic, Sacred Dying. She has extolled the virtues of this important time, a time to counterbalance medicine’s well-meaning approach to life’s passages with the “silent embrace” of beauty. Prayer, silence, ritual, and poignant music and sounds are all tools we use to accompany our fellow travelers in the journey. Whether vigiliing for those at the end of their lives, or for those seeking presence and companionship in the midst of treatment and uncertainty, vigiling transforms a shared experience to one that will be remembered by all with awe, tenderness, and dignity.
