The Art of Fight

After been giving the theme Time; Past and Presence, I decided my theme would be ‘The Art of

Fight’. The aim is to capture the movement of Kickboxing. Time will be defined as two parts; one is

the period of time designated to an activity, like the 2mins in a round of a fight, and the second is a

‘specific moment’. This specific moment is the most important part of the moving image as this is

the moment in a fight I will be trying to capture as it the moment in which a fight that can be won or

lost.

Past will be defined as the movements in activity, like the occurrence of one kick or punch to the

next to end up in the present position. I will capture the movements my body goes through when

using combinations. Presence won’t be just the fighter or fighters, but defined also as the

proximity, two fighters close together within the space in the ring. For this I am hoping to capture

two fighters sparring in the ring.

As an experienced fighter I understand what it’s like to have time slow in the ring and have all sound

disappear, to have your only focus be your opponent in front of you. In what feels like and eternity

is only ever a matter of minutes or seconds, and when it’s over you feel the opposite, that it

happened all too fast. My point is your mind can capture in a matter of seconds or even a fraction of

a second your opponent’s movements.

I am still unsure at this point if I am using film as well as stills, but I will be looking at the

photography of Eadweard Muybrigde and how he captured the human body moving and more

artistmodern way in which Norman Mc Laren captured the dancers in performance. I will research

film fight scenes like the famous Raging Bull or Rocky for inspiration and post these on a blog for
