Who are ?
The Need for CCTV Lighting
• Most crime occurs during darkness• All cameras need light to see• Regular street lighting is not good enough • Provide evidence for judicial purposes• IP cameras need more light• Megapixel cameras need more light• Video analytics only works with good clean images
Types of Illumination
Incandescent Bulb
Fluorescent Lamp
HID Bulb
LED
LED or Bulb?Incandescent Bulbs• Low cost• 10% efficient – 90% heat• Require regular replacement
Halogen Bulb• Halogen 15% efficient – 85% heat• Require regular replacement
Drawbacks• Expensive to operate• Expensive to maintain
LED or Bulb?
Fluorescent Lamps• 40% efficient – 60% heat• Lasts 10-20 times longer than normal
bulb
Drawbacks• Produces a “flicker”• Contains mercury
LED or Bulb?
HID Lamps• 60-80% efficient – 20-40% heat• Good color rendition except low
pressure sodium
Drawbacks• Slow start up
Why LED?
LEDs• 80-90% efficient – 10-20% heat• Extremely low running costs• Extremely long life
– 10 year in case of
• Durable and insensitive to vibration• Uniform illumination• Global shift in lighting from
incandescent bulbs to LEDs

20 units $15,040 $420 $14,620
Operating Costs• Potential saving on 1 illuminator of $731 per year• Over ten years this is a potential saving of $7,310
• Potential saving on 20 illuminators of $14,620 per year• Over ten years this is a potential saving of $146,200
LED based illuminators also provide increased site security as lighting is less likely to be “down”
What is Invisible Illumination?• Active or near Infrared illumination• Energy invisible to the human eye• Visible to b/w cameras• Light is measured in Nanometers (nm)• Infrared light is 700nm - 1000nm• Ideal source of illumination for security cameras:-
• Ideal as a covert form of illumination• No light pollution• Longer range than visible light• “Don’t illuminate those assets you are trying to protect”
Visible or Invisible Lighting?

Visible or Invisible Lighting?
White Light Illuminators
• White Light = Visible Light• Illuminate area for color CCTV cameras• Visible lighting for safety• Provide welcoming environment• Deter crime by illuminating the area• Multipurpose lighting - ‘all the above’

How to Specify Lighting for CCTV• Angle of illumination should match camera/lens angle• Too narrow
– camera will see bright spot in middle of scene– contrast between light & dark areas on scene will be too great
• Too wide wastes energy & reduces distance• Table below shows the FOV angle for different lenses
Fixed Lenses Varifocal LensesLens (mm) Horizontal FOV 1/3” CCD Lens (mm) Horizontal FOV 1/3” CCD
2.8 92o 2.8-6 92o - 44o
4 64o 3.5-8 78o - 38o
6 44o 3.5-10 78o - 27o
8 38o 4.5-12.5 60o - 23o
12.5 22o 8.5-40 34o - 6o
16 17o 10-30 20o - 7o
25 11o
50 6o
How to Specify Lighting for CCTV• Select Angle of Illumination • Following angles are available
10o 30o 60o 100o 120o
• Select required Distance of Illumination• As angle increases distance decreases• Choose relevant Illuminator from Iluminar Distance Chart
Dual Mounting Bracket• Infrared or White Light Illuminators• Adjustable Illumination• Doubles the Angle of Illumination (max. 240 degrees)• Increases Illumination distance by up to 40%• Mix-and-match illuminators
Lighting for Dome Cameras
Problem:“Providing lighting for PTZ dome cameras is a challenge for CCTV professionals as lighting cannot be fitted to move with the camera.”
Solutions:• Wide Angle Illumination
• Target Area Illumination
• Local Area Illumination
Lighting for Dome Cameras
Wide Angle illumination• Wide angle illuminators covering 120° allow the full 360° angle
of a dome to be covered with only 3 illuminators
• Use IL-DMB Dual Mounting Bracket
Local area illumination
• Illuminator fitted away from camera to illuminate the local scene
Target area illumination
• Target specific points of interest such as gates or doorways
Lighting for Dome Cameras
Lighting & PTZ Systems
Problem:• At long distances the lens is often
zoomed in giving a narrow FOV• At short distances camera pans to a
wide angle• Requires lighting to cover both narrow
& wide angles
Solutions:• Provide lighting using twin lighting
system mounted on PTZ camera (typically 1 wide & 1 narrow)
• Same solutions as for Dome Cameras

Applications
Airports Border Depots Governments
Highways Marinas Military Bases Offices
Applications
Parking Lots Power Stations Prisons Railways
Recreation Retail Tunnels Utilities
• Anodized aluminum construction instead of painted– Painted units insulate the heat sink; therefore, the units will run hot
• Pressurized equalization vent fitted as standard– Allows moisture trapped inside to escape, which prevents condensation– Prevents seals from rupturing due to changes in pressure
• Interface connector as standard– Photocell following contact & remote telemetry input
• High quality polycarbonate lens that allows 90% transmission• Power & photocell sensitivity on the side of the unit
– Easier for the installer to adjust after installation• Photocell mounted on top of the unit
– Photocell on the back of the unit causes the unit to come on at earlier times due to shadows and therefore wastes energy and life of the illuminator
• IP67 rated• Widest range of PoE illuminators• Largest selection of low voltage lighting
