The Art of Animation The books that I have used and will reference in this PowerPoint are: Masters of Animation The Alchemy of Animation Walt Disney Animation Studios, the Archive series- Animation Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation What makes an animator To be an animator, you have to master two skills. First, you have to have an eye for movement and understand the specifics of how movement conveys meaning Second, you have to be able to translate your understanding of movements to paper; your draftsmanship must be able to capture and convey your intent- Walt Disney Animation Studios the Archive series-animetion An animated figure can do things no live action figure can, however, in this day and age, technology of special effects has now reached such a level that this answer can no longer be valid yet far from seeing a diminution of the animation industry over recent years we have in fact seen a great resurgence- Masters of animation. The process of creating an animated piece When it comes to making any animated feature, there is usually a team, and this team can all together consist of: Director Producer Writers Songwriters Story artist Editor Production designers Voice Actors And of course the animators themselves Story Structure- 3 acts - Act 1 introduces characters and world and gets them into some form of a dilemma. - Act 2 develops the plot, reveals characters motives and depth of relationships. Ends in completely unresolved problem. - Act 3 is resolistion, character enters in hopeless situation, reveals courage in the face of insurmountable odds, includes undoing evil and triumph of good. -However, this is only a guideline, and many animated movies and tv shows dont necessarily follow this structure. Once Writing and drawing is done, storyboarding begins- A pitch of the story to the director and crew. - Acting, story telling and salesmanship all in one. - Story artist stand in front with a pointer and walks through scenes. - The editor then meets the story team to pitch finished story board and discuss camera movements, sound effects, music idea and anything else. Production designer is responsible for how the animated feature should look- would work with the art director Visual development artist then would create the concept art for how the characters and world look, and explore them both and visualize how the film or show would look. Once filmmakers have developed characters, they would then start looking for voice actors. Then the animation can begin. Different types of animations CGI/3D animation- using computer generated imagery 2D animation (traditional hand drawn and digital) Stop Motion- using puppets, clay and cut out Paint-on-glass- using slow-drying oil paints on sheets of glass Drawn-on-film- using images directly on film stock Experimental- No limitations of ideas and techniques Walt Disney Some animations hes worked on; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Mickey Mouse Cartoons Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Cartoons Fantasia Cinderella Sleeping Beauty 101 dalmations Pinoccio Dumbo Make Mine Music Alice in Wonderland Peter Pan Hayao Miyazaki Some animations hes worked on; Spirited Away Howls Moving Castle My Neighbour Totoro Princess Mononoke The Castle Of Cagliostro Kikis Delivery Service Ponyo The Wind Rises Castle in the sky Hanna and Barbera Some animations theyve worked on; The Flintstones The Yogi Bear Show Top Cat Jonny Quest Wacky Racers Scooby-Doo, Where are you! To show what animation can do and the potential it has. For people to be influenced and inspired by my work, like I am with others To bring life my characters and to see them move and hear them speak. Maybe try to bring back 2D animation in films. Share my opinions through my stories and try to teach people morals and what can be done to make the world a better place. To be part of a team. To explore new worlds. To create entertainment for everyone of all ages to enjoy.
